Yes it likely is April instead of March as I first thought..  The "A" and 
"b" together in such compact writing can take a shape resembling an "M".  
That explains why the next-to-last letter has a dot above rather than a 
cedilla below.  I have tried to make the last word in the year "nove" but I 
just can't.  It still looks like oito to me.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Hard to read marriage record!

Hello guys! 

Sorry to ask your help one last time, as I will be busy for a while with 
school after this!


 I have discovered a marriage record for my . grandparents from 
Calheta, Calheta, Sao Jorge on the 28th of September 1778.

It is the entry on the left hand side of the following page (Antonio 
Machado Cardoso and Barbara Josefa).  I am having a bit of trouble with 
their parents names however, so if someone could clear things up Id be 
greatly appreciative.

I'm thinking the grooms parents are
- Joam Cardoso Machado ??
- Maria das Candeyas

and the bride's parents could be
- Joam Machado Cabral ??
- ___ Maria___??

These are very hard to read for me as It was just last month I started 
doing such serious Azorean research, and now I have found a second 
immigrant ancestor and am going crazy!

Basically, there is an Ancestry tree that lists Joseph Bettencourt and 
Maria Candida as the parents of that person's Thomas Correia Bettencourt 
but he can't remember how he got that info and I've asked him to follow up 
with the people he spoke to that gave him info on that particular Thomas 
because I have a "very high" 4th cousin DNA match to someone *else* who has 
a tree with that same Thomas Correia Bettencourt in it. *My* Thomas 
Bettencourt has a father named José Correa Bettencourt and Maria Candida 
and both the José (Joseph) and "Correa" lead me to believe that their 
Thomas Bettencourt (my great uncle) is the same as the one to came to 
Peabody but I have no way of knowing until this guy lets me know where he 
found the parentage of his Thomas (probably from those grand grandkids 
since it said Joseph and not José). I figured if I could find a passenger 
list from 1910 with Thomas on it I'd be able to connect them, especially if 
I found other connecting info from that list along with it. My guess is 
they're the same based on the DNA match. Since this would be the first 
non-French Canadian DNA match to either side of my family, I'm rather 
curious to find out.

Maria Candida was born 1822 (45 at birth of Thomas) and her husband Jose in 
1808. I already have them as relatives and Iv'e cross referenced the 
confessional 
roll 

 
with baptismal records 
.
 
 And I've found a very similar Thomas over in Peabody, MA where a lot of 
the rest of my Azores ancestors came to. And I found one person's tree who 
listed a Joseph Bettencourt and Maria Candida but I emailed the person and 
he cannot remember how he got them, probably from great grandchildren of 
their Thomas Bettencourt.  I'm trying to find any sort of passenger 
information connecting by Thomas (whose parentage and at least two siblings 
I'm already mostly solid on) and the one that came to Peabody. So it's some 
sort of connecting info I need. The censuses say he came over in 1900. The 
1910 census said he used the name Thomas Correia but when I looked it up, 
it was listed as Thomas Conia but it's pretty clear that's a mistranslation 
of the document.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Age of child?

Hi there,

Here's an image of a confessional roll entry I'm trying to understand. This 
is, I believe, my ancestors Faustino da Silva and Rosa Candida. For the 
next person in their family, Maria J.a (Juaquina? Though that isn't on the 
abbreviations page I have from the Azores page) there is only an "M".  Does 
this mean something? If it's mother, then it probably isn't my ancestor 
because Rosa's mother is Maria Candida and Faustino's mother is Anna Maria.

Potential son: Thomas Correia Bettencourt born about 1866 or 1867

When is potential mom Maria Candida born? If she was born a couple of years
after her husband, say 1810 and the potential kid was born 1866/7, well,
then she was about 57/58 at his birth. That's past child bearing age.

Know potential mom's age will allow you to rule her out or keep them as
possible relatives.

I agree that the year is 1948, but 4 May is the date of the note, not 
necessarily the death.  I think the first line says he died on  day 30 of 
last March (faleceu no dia trinta de Marco ultimo).  Since it references a 
registry of obit, I think it likely he died in this same parish.  I think 
it is record 39 of that registry.

Thank you, that's good to know of course, but very disappointing. What a
roller coaster! Maria Teresa Maciel is the only name that we have known her
by, which is frustrating. I was excited when I found any reference to
Maciel in the baptismal records & was hoping that since that was the name
that she chose that it was a significant or close family connection. Also,
when I looked in the family tree on CITEM that is connected to this Maria,
there were a few other Maria Teresa's & Teresa's. The mother's name is
listed as Maria Teresa.

I wonder if our Maria Teresa really had a different name at birth, but then
took on this name later because this Maria had died? There are several
different dates suggested for her birth in the census records, from 1865 to
1868. I have seen an even wider range of dates for other people. Makes you
wonder if some didn't even know what their actual date of birth was & just
picked one that seemed likely, but forgot which one that they had picked
before! Sigh. Back to the haystack.

I'm going to try to get hard copies of her marriage & death certificates to
see if there is any more info there.

Santa Madre Ingreja, as you use it, is probably not a parish church. You 
usually find it as part of the formula used in a marriage record, e.g. "casaram 
conforme o ritual de Santa Madre Igreja conforme os decretos do Sagrado 
Concilio de Trento..." (They were married in accordance to the ritual of Holy 
Mother, the Church, as decreed by the Council of Trent, etc) So Santa Madre 
Igreja is a title given to describe the Catholic Church, as mother of the 
faithful.
