I think the bride is the daughter of Pedro Martins (looks like Polo Miz) and
his wife, Ursula Coelho. We need a second set of eyes.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Need help reading part of the Altares Baptism referencing the godparents

2019-06-21 Thread doreencaetano
I have most of the information from Francisca (Ignacia) baptism record. Her
parents are Joam Martins Gil and Maria do Espirito Santo. I’m trying to get the
information about the godparents. I have Manuel Martins Gil and Theresa de
Jesus, children of Antonio Martins ? and his wife Maria Nunes. The record
is on the lower left side of the page.

 Hi,
I came across a passenger list for Hawaii. I believe the family on
there are my family but the wife has a different name. Here is my evidence:

Manoel de Medeiros Manteiga April 27, 1849
 Maria da Gloria about 1848
 Married on May 11, 1872

 http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-LG-ROSARIO-C-1870-1879/SMG-LG-ROSARIO-C-1870-1879_item1/P62.html
Groom's parents: Boaventura de Medeiros/Joanna Candida
 Bride's parents: Jose d'Oliveira Zangao/Joanna Emilia

 Children:
 Maria - Mar. 29 1872
Parents are listed as: Manoel Medeiros/Maria da Conceicao
Pat: Boaventura de Medeiros/Joanna de Jesus
Mat: Jose de Medeiros Zangao/Anna de Jesus

 http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-LG-ROSARIO-B-1870-1879/SMG-LG-ROSARIO-B-1870-1879_item1/P151.html

 Ricarda - Oct. 26 1874
Parents: Manoel de Medeiros Manteiga/Maria da Gloria
 Pat: Boaventura de Medeiros/Joanna Candida
 Mat: Jose d'Oliveira Zangao/Joanna Emilia

 Maria - Jan. 16, 1877
Parents: Manoel de Medeiros Manteiga/Maria da Gloria
 Pat: Boaventura de Medeiros/Joanna Candida
Mat: Jose d'Oliveira Zangao/Joanna de Jesus

 http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-LG-ROSARIO-B-1870-1879/SMG-LG-ROSARIO-B-1870-1879_item1/P488.html

 Manoel - Dec. 30, 1879
Parents: Manoel de Medeiros Manteiga/Maria da Gloria
 Pat: Boaventura de Medeiros/Joanna Candida
 Mat: Jose d'Oliveira Zangao/Joanna Emilia

 http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-LG-ROSARIO-B-1880-1881/SMG-LG-ROSARIO-B-1880-1881_item1/P6.html

 Jose - Oct. 19, 1882
Parents: Manoel de Medeiros Manteiga/Maria da Gloria
 Pat: Boaventura de Medeiros/Joanna Candida
 Mat: Jose d'Oliveira Zangao/Joanna Emilia

 http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-LG-ROSARIO-B-1882-1888/SMG-LG-ROSARIO-B-1882-1888_item1/P121.html

The only information on the passenger list from 1883 is:

 [image: Screen Shot 2019-04-10 at 12.40.11 PM.png]

So Manoel would have been born on approximately 1850
Maria da Conceicao - approx. 1848
 Maria - approx. 1873
 Ricarda - approx. 1875
 Manoel - approx. 1880
 Maria - approx. 1877
 Jose - approx. 1883

Only once does the mother show as Maria da Conceicao on the children's
baptismal records. The ages are all pretty close, down to the manifest wife
being older than the husband. I have not found any other records that would
match this manifest. I do have another Manoel de Medeiros Manteiga in my
tree and he is married to a Maria

Hi Leonor,

Emigration leaving the Azores is here on the Tombo.pt site (which will link

Scroll down to the Ponta Delgada section and pick the book that contains

He's the widow of Dona Antonia Caetano, buried in the church of the religious
Franciscans on the 27 Nov 1829...then I think it goes on to say where to find
it in the death book.

2018-08-15 Thread Cheri Mello
 Ken M,

You have an Antonio Damiao b. 1878 and his wife, Anna Silva, as your
relatives. They are born possibly Pico. But the family Bible says Santa
Maria. Is that correct?

I believe I've seen the name on Sao Miguel island and I think it comes from
Santa Maria. However, I research both those islands. I don't have lineage
from Pico.

If you have tested your DNA with Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), you need to join
the Azores DNA Project and I will be able to tell you if your lines are
Santa Maria or Pico, based on your matches. If you tested somewhere else,
you may be able to transfer for free. Some raw data can be read by the
FTDNA system, and some can’t. If you have tested with a company that
doesn’t transfer, you can always test with FTDNA. They are having a summer
sale for $59 USD (+$12.95 S&H – includes free shipping back if you are a
U.S. resident). It’s like fishing for more cousins in another pond. If you
have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Need Help Locating Village and Island

2018-08-15 Thread kennethmonis54
Hello Everyone,
I know that this is most likely a shot in the dark. I'm trying to locate my
Grandmother's parents Antonio Damiao born 1878 and his wife Anna Silva. Most of
our family records indicate they came from Pico but no Village. I have my
father's bible which shows my Grandmother's parents came from Santa Maria. The
handwriting in the bible looks like it is my mother's but I know my mom was in
contact with my father's family about their Azores Roots. Does anyone know if
the two surnames come from Pico or Santa Maria? Does anyone recognize my Great
Grandparents? Any help would be greatly apreciated. I do have a GEDmatch kit if
that would help.

Thanks,
Ken Monis

Maternal granddaughter of avo incognito and of Josefa do Nascimentto (sic).

Both grandpa and grandma unknown would be avoS incognitoS.

I'm having trouble making out the words of the following baptism record of
Francisca, left side of page, second entry, lines 9 and 10.

On line #9 I believe that it states that the maternal grandfather (or
grandparents) is/are unknown and then there is the name Jozefa da

The father’s name is Joao de Simas. Five lines below is the grandfather’s name
which is a little easier to read Jose de Simas. The priest that signed the
record at the bottom is Joao de Arita da Silveira which is a good comparison
for the first letter on how he made his letter “S”.

The father’s name is Joao de Simas. Five lines below is the grandfather’s name
which is a little easier to read Jose de Simas. The priest that signed the
record at the bottom is Joao de Arita da Silveira which is a good comparison
for the first letter on how he made his letter “S”.

Oops I was only looking at the underlined part and the second name blew by me.
Yes, it must have come from the father’s mother. It is hard to read it looks
something like “Munris” or “Menris” but I am not sure. The record is a bit
fuzzy because of the dpi they used to scan it.

2017-11-11 Thread 'Gayle Machado' via Azores Genealogy
Judy,

Jose was born on the second of Nov. and baptized on the 6th. from what I can
read. The very first line says "seis" meaning six and on the following page (I
think it was the fourth line down) it says "dois" of the same month meaning on
the second.

Hope that helps.

Simao's father is Lazaro Ferras.

Barbara's mother is Catarina Manuel

It doesn't state where they are from but you can presume the couple is from
Altares in the absence of naming another town.

several times Nicolau Borges Coelho and Maria de Sao Joao. I have linked
Antonia Josepha to Joao Cardoso and Antonia Sacramento Mendes. This a other
couple that appears in my tree that was developed by Joao Ventura. Before I
start adding people to family groups I want to make sure I'm reading this
correctly because it is not an easy one to read. I know that I'm perfectly
capable of making mistakes and adding that to my minimal skills in reading
the records. It could lead to well you knowerrors. Thanks again
for your help. My cousin Mel will be very pleased as to how far we have
come to developing his tree. I get excited when their tree link to my tree.
It saves me a lot of work because it has already been done (through my

The record I’m interested in is at the bottom of the left side of pg 163 for

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help with Marriage record for Francisco Antonio da Silveira and Clara Florinda - Flamengos Faial

2017-01-31 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
The scribe started writing the age as 27 and corrected himself, “digo” (I meant
to say) and wrote 5 years so the bride was 25 at the time of her marriage.

The date below the names is most likely a certificate was issued on that date.

Two things about the record I could use some help with:

1- There is a note in the margin underneath the names of the "couple". I
don't understand the abbreviation before the date. "? em 1? de Janeiro de
1873"

2- In the 16th line, I believe it is telling the age of the bride, but I'm not

According to the marriage record Victoria is from Agua Retorto as is her

look for her baptism after I found the parents' marriage in the same place.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help reading this one.

2016-11-20 Thread Tish M
Parents and child's name are correct
The mother is from Santa Barbara
Paternal grandmother: Maria de Jesus
born on 21 Dec 1805
Hint:
Look at the book you are working from if you are having trouble reading the
year. You will see it only goes to 1810 so the birth can't be 1850.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help reading this one.

2016-11-19 Thread JR
Well done. The year, however, is 1805 not 1850. If ever in doubt just look
at records before or after to confirm the correct month or year. Note also
you are the book of 1797-1810.

 Yes,
that's her baptism and obit record.  The 1816 is a
certification.  It means her birth record was requested and
certified in 1816.  It could be for many reasons.  a)
inheritance b) a child or husband needed proof of birth.
Should you find this certification on her husband's
birth record or one of their children, you will know it was
an inheritance or other legal matters. If they owned a home
together and he remarried, there would be a need to set the
 records straight...etc.
Nothing in the obit refers to
his remarriage.  It does say her age was 38 years old. If
you suspect he did marry again, you can start searching
shortly after her death date, especially if there were
children, a man would usually remarry shortly after.  It
may not be in the same town though, which makes it hard to
 find.

2 May 1852. I had to read the next two records below to get the year.
... and he was buried in the "airo?" of this church at on the 11th* day of
the same month and year.

*11 - current spelling is onze and old spelling is honze.

Someone else is going to have to figure out what looks like "airo."

2016-11-03 Thread Margaret Vicente
Hi Carmen,

According to these records, none of these children were adopted or
"perfilhadas" because if they were it would be annotated on the record with
the parents names or point to another book with that information.

The word after Inacia (Ignacia) Maria is "Joaquina" the full name is Inacia
Maria Joaquina

You're welcome,

Margaret

Yes on the dates.
I have only heard of one other case of 2 living boys with the same name. I
believe it was Rick Pimentel who had it.

I'd double check though and make sure the priest didn't have too much vinho
and put the death note on the wrong José. Cheri

Jose, bottom right.  Is the baptismal date 28 Mar 1887 and birth date 20 Mar
1887?  I also have his obit 4 May 1890, 3 yrs. old.
It is curious because there is another Jose, my grandfather born 11 May 1883,
same parents and grandparents. (I have his birth record.)  Why would they name
a son born after a still living son with the same name?  I know many girls are
named Maria and then go by their second name but; I wasn’t aware that it
happened with sons as well.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] NEED HELP

2016-10-20 Thread 'Philippe GARNIER' via Azores Genealogy
Hi Carmen,
"why is his last name soares when his father's is da costa".
His parents are Antonio da Costa and Umbelina Francisca. The parents of
Umbelina Francisca are Francisco Soares e Maria de Matos. O "Soares" is from
his maternal grandfather. The composed surname of the portugues people is, the
more frequently, an association of a paternal surname and a maternal surname.
It's very frequent that a child have not the same surname of the father. The
complete surname of Jacinto is "Soares Oliveira". Then, probably, there is an
"Oliveira" in the ascendants of Antonio da Costa.
The godfather of Maria and the "procurador" of the madrinha are children of
Antonio Soares Rebelo. Probably from the Francisco Soares family. The godfather
of Teresa is Francisco Soares son fo Francisca Soares. Probably the brother of
Umbelina Francisca. And the "procurador" of the godmother is José Soares.
Probably from the Francisco Soares family. The dois  "procuradores" of the
godparents of Antonio are"Francisco Soares de Oliveira priest", probably a
parent of Jacinto Soares Oliveira, and João Francisco Soares, Probably from the
Francisco Soares family. Philippe Garnier Paris - France

 marriage of jacinto
soares to jacinta rosa in 1821 guerabina?

YOU GOT THE NAMES CORRECT, BUT
 I READ THE DATE AS OCT 29 1823 N0T 1821

his parents are António da Costa and Umbelina
 Francis - she is deceased?
 her parents are
José Monis and Maria da Estrella

YES, AND AT LEAST ONE OF THE GRROMS PARENTS IS
DECEASED.  DEPENDING ON HOW YOU LOOK AT IT I THINK IT MIGHT
 ACTUALLY BE DEFUNCTAS.

 here
 is jacinta's baptism in 1804?

YEP! I WOULD READ IT AS NOVEMBER 5th 1804

 could this be António da
Costa and Umbelina Francis' marriage - what is the year?

 YES, I THINK YOU HAVE
IT.  I READ THAT DATE AS THE 8th OF DECEMBER 1781.  NOT
100% SURE ON THE 8th, BUT I READ THE ONE BEFORE IT AS THE
7th, AND THE ONE AFTER IT AS THE 10th.

 Hope this is
 of some help!

Carmen,

Go to the Azores GenWeb and click on the words "Maps, Churches, and
Villages." Pick your island. Look at your freguesia. Start searching
adjacent freguesias. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/

 marriage of jacinto
soares to jacinta rosa in 1821 guerabina?

YOU GOT THE NAMES CORRECT, BUT
 I READ THE DATE AS OCT 29 1823 N0T 1821

his parents are António da Costa and Umbelina
 Francis - she is deceased?
 her parents are
José Monis and Maria da Estrella

YES, AND AT LEAST ONE OF THE GRROMS PARENTS IS
DECEASED.  DEPENDING ON HOW YOU LOOK AT IT I THINK IT MIGHT
 ACTUALLY BE DEFUNCTAS.

 here
 is jacinta's baptism in 1804?

YEP! I WOULD READ IT AS NOVEMBER 5th 1804

 could this be António da
Costa and Umbelina Francis' marriage - what is the year?

 YES, I THINK YOU HAVE
IT.  I READ THAT DATE AS THE 8th OF DECEMBER 1781.  NOT
100% SURE ON THE 8th, BUT I READ THE ONE BEFORE IT AS THE
7th, AND THE ONE AFTER IT AS THE 10th.

 Hope this is
 of some help!

 Jeremy
