 anyway...

I personally like RFC, because for me RFC means Request For Change and it is
used in this sense in a number of large shops. However, since there seems to
be some opposition to it, I've dropped it -- Feature Request.

  Concerning future development of Bacula:
As I noted in the 1.38 ReleaseNotes, version 1.38 was different from
prior versions because it had a lot more contributions. I expect that
this trend will continue. As a consequence, I am going to modify how I
normally do development, and instead of making a list of all the features
that I will implement in the next version, I will personally sign up for
one (maybe two) projects at a time, and when they are complete, I will
  release a new version.

The difference is that I will have more time to review the new code that
is being contributed, and will be able to devote more time to a smaller
number of projects (1.38 had too many new features for me to handle
  correctly).

I expect that future release schedules will be much the same, and the
number of new features will also be much the same providing that the
contributions continue to come -- and they show no signs of let up :-)

 I'm curious...

  Feature requests -- RFCs:
In addition, I would like to formalize the feature requests (RFC) a
bit. Instead of me maintaining an informal list of everything I run into
(kernstodo), I would like to maintain a formal list of projects. This
means that all new feature requests, including those recently discussed
on the email lists, must be formally submitted and approved.

This sounds good. Seeing how many ideas are presented in the mailing
lists, some sort of management seems necessary. Doing everything at the
same time usually doesn't work, and perhaps a more formalized way to
submit ideas and select what to implement ties people closer into the
development. I only hope that not too many people feel that the
suggested way to discuss new features is overly bureaucratic... some
 surely will, but that's life.

Formal submission of feature requests will take two forms: 1.
non-mandatory, but highly recommended is to discuss proposed new features
on the mailing list. 2. Formal submission of an RFC in a special format.
I'll give an example of this below, but you can also find it on the web
site under Support - Feature Requests. Since it takes a bit of time
to properly fill out a RFC form, you probably should check on the email
  list first.

Especially considering that the list users as a whole know a lot about
how Bacula works, and what can be done and, more important, can't be
done with it's design this is a good idea.

 ...

Once users have had several weeks to submit RFCs, I will organize them,
and request users to vote on them. This will allow fixing prioritizing
the RFCs. Having a priority is one thing, but getting it implement is
another thing -- I am hoping that the Bacula community will take more
responsibility for assuring the implementation of accepted RFCs.

So, why do we vote and priorize? Wouldn't it be more helpful to publish
a list of projects, together with information about the curent state of
discussion concerning them, and heve interested developers pich what
 they want to implement?

I think that, since we need people to implement things, it's not the
best idea to say we want this. Volunteers step forward but rather help
people find interesting things to develop.

Of course the opposite could be true, too: That people already involved
in the Bacula project are more likely to implement something they see
the need for than simply select what they think could be fun to do.

 Hard to say...

 ...

Your comments on this would be welcome -- as well as your RFCs.

Well, you've got my comments, and you will get more suggestions :-)

 Arno

Nice. I'm happy to hear it. I'll see if I can pull the essential information

This is the first time I use bacula and I want to know if there's any

As we defined in our security policie, we have to tapes (volumes), and

and do the bacula-dir -t /etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf the director send me

We compiled it with gcc 3.4.2 on Solaris 9 and gcc 3.4.4 on Solaris 10.

I did'nt use any special options at compiletime.

All the problems I had were the result of my bad config...

[Bacula-users] job to run at 0000-00-00 00:00:00 ?

2005-11-11 Thread Steve Loughran

(Mods: please ignore the other queued post, it was sent from wrong account)

Hi all

After much recursive running around in the docs to get things working, I
am now adding my clients and running them manually (i`ll work on
schedules next week).

Yesterday, they all worked fine. Today, i submit a manual run job but

Yes, of course, simply use the update volume=xxx command and mark it Used or
Full.

I think you should run the btape test program, and if it doesn't ask you be
sure to do the auto command too.

Perhaps the list can help you more with this problem as well, since they are
generally better than I am at these things ...

It comes up with the rewind
error straight after loading the tape.

Kern Sibbald [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10/11/2005 12:05:20

Most likely you do not have a long enough wait in your mtx-changer script,
and so Bacula is attempting to access the drive before the autochanger has
had enough time to load the tape.

This is described in the script and in the Autochanger chapter of the
 manual.

   the files
Geir are stored) and the job info (stored in the database, not on
   the
  Geir volume).

Geir My problem is the backupstrategi we use here. We take
   incremental backup
Geir to disk every working day, but once a month we take full
   backup to tape.
Geir So fare, all is good. BUT we have all the 12 month-tapes
   stored for a
Geir year, and we also have a year-tape who is stored for all

Geir Most restores are done on files lost less the a month ago ...

Geir time to time I have to go to tape and get older files. But if

Geir Is there some things I can do to be able to restore files
   older then one

Geir Will deleting `rm VolumeXX` from the disk and setting job
   retention to
Geir 99 years do the trick? Or will that just FP everything?

Have you considered setting the Volume Retention for the disk
   volumes to
something like 60 days? That will override the longer Job
   Retention and allow
the disk volumes to be recycled.

Geir Yes, I have considered that, but is that the way it work? Does
   Volume
  Geir Retention override Job Retention?

Yes (and the File Retention). The manual describes this in more
   detail.
Hurray ... this solves the problem (maybe I have to buy glasses? Or drik
   mor coffee?)
  Geir Hmm ... now I have a:

Geir Volume Use Duration = 10 min
Geir File Retention = 30 min
  Geir Job Retention = 2 h
Geir Volume Retention = 30 min

Geir Just for testing ... I run 4 jobs whit 10 min in between, and get 4
Geir volumes. When the last job is finished the first job is purged from the
Geir list jobs in bconsole. So fare so good, but how can I use this whit my
Geir month-tape setup. If I understood Martin Simmons right it is possible to
Geir restore form a volume where the job retention still is'nt run out (the
Geir volume is on a tape and set to readonly). HOW ... I can't understand how
Geir I can do this ...

Use a Volume Retention of 12 months for the month-tapes tape volumes and 1
month for the disk volumes. For the year-tape volume, you can set its
retention to 99 years if you want to keep it in the pool forever.

What OS version? Specifically the kernel.

There was a change in how the Linux kernel handles tape drives from 2.4 to
2.6. Bacula 1.38.0 learned how to deal with it correctly, Bacula 1.36.3 and
lower can have this type of error.

The other thing to do is to turn on the wait_for_drive() (or whatever it is

Yes, so are some of the others ...

I'm forced to use ACLs soon, and need a way to back them up. So I

To the best of my knowledge with that patch integrated, ACLs

I can confirm that Solaris doesn't work. Their is code for Solaris
ACLs but the configure script does not detect ACL support on
 Solaris.

I think I just answered my own question by doing man acl on Solaris. I see
detection of the code is probably significantly different ...

I helped with Darwin and FreeBSD but I have not had time to

Yes, so are some of the others ...

I'm forced to use ACLs soon, and need a way to back them up. So I
would try to patch in support for Solaris ACLs if it's needed.

To the best of my knowledge with that patch integrated, ACLs
should now work on:

Solaris

If they don't work there's a dirty hack: backup ACLs with command line
tools. Use a ClientRunBeforeJob script to call the tools.

Yeah, thats a good idea. I will use this as a fallback scenario, but
would really prefer the 'clean way'.

2005-11-11 Thread Steve Loughran
my bad... had a job waiting for intervention that was holding up the
queued jobs. All running fine again...

Sorry

Steve

Yesterday, they all worked fine. Today, i submit a manual run job but
start time is set to:

-00-00 00:00:00

I cannot quite understand the context, so it would probably help us to figure
out exactly what you are referring to if you would include the *exact* output
from the console that shows this zero time ...

[Bacula-users] Anticipate next volume request

2005-11-11 Thread MaxxAtWork
Hello,

in my Bacula system I take differential or full backups on Monday
morning (and they go on one pool) and incrementals from Tuesday to
Friday (and they go on a different pool).
Tape is a manually operated DLT7000.

Now, I would like that when last incremental job on Friday has
finished, Bacula would send a separate mail to the operator to inform
which tape will be used on Monday.
It's end of the day, so the director's list is empty.

Is it possible to get that with a regular Bacula job, or should I
create a custom script that looks into MySQL database?

Thank you

Maxx

Kern, Florian, Thanks for your help!

I've learnt a lesson.. I should've inspected the media. The end of the tape has
gone right inside itself, so it would probably just spin forever.

Thanks for your help guys. Never thought it would be a physical error.

What version of Bacula are you running?
What OS version? Specifically the kernel.

There was a change in how the Linux kernel handles tape drives from 2.4 to 2.6.
Bacula 1.38.0 learned how to deal with it correctly, Bacula 1.36.3 and
lower can have this type of error.

The other thing to do is to turn on the wait_for_drive() (or whatever it is
called) in mtx-changer, but make sure it works on your system.

Yes, of course, simply use the update volume=xxx command and mark it Used
 or Full.

I think you should run the btape test program, and if it doesn't ask you
be sure to do the auto command too.

Perhaps the list can help you more with this problem as well, since they
are generally better than I am at these things ...

It comes up with the rewind
error straight after loading the tape.

Kern Sibbald [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10/11/2005 12:05:20

Most likely you do not have a long enough wait in your mtx-changer
script, and so Bacula is attempting to access the drive before the
autochanger has had enough time to load the tape.

This is described in the script and in the Autochanger chapter of the
  manual.

Use a Volume Retention of 12 months for the month-tapes tape volumes and 1

Geir But what about File and Job Retention ... those are set on the Client,

Geir If I set File and Job Retention to 99 years all, but one be fine ... the
Geir MySQL database where all Job info is stored ... Any suggestions?

No, you can't put different File and Job Retentions in the Scheduler.

Setting them to 99 years might be OK. It won't keep all the records for 99
years, because the shortest retention (from Volume, File and Job) controls
what is kept for each job. When the Volume Retention is reached for a volume,
all the job and file records are removed for that volume, so this will happen
every month for the disk volumes and every 12 months for the month-tapes.

at home and are not that familiar with autoconf.

You could look at it. Perhaps it wouldn't be too much effort, but the code is
conciderably changed because it has been moved around a lot (new files). The
code is now much simpler (at least the main line code). However, there might
be some complications with new features or something. I'm having trouble
keeping up as it is, so it isn't something I would do, but I'd be happy to
answer questions.

My advice would be to test 1.38 and move up -- aside from problems with
multiple concurrent jobs accessing autochangers, where users pull cassettes
in and out, it seems to be very stable (more so than 1.36 IMO).

[Bacula-users] Ignore FileSet Changes being ignored

2005-11-11 Thread John Kodis
I recently set up Bacula and did a full backup about a week ago, and a
number of incremental since. I then added an additional directory to
the exclude section of the file set resource, and as would be
expected, this caused Bacula to upgrade the next backup from
incremental to full. I don't want this to happen, so I canceled the
job, shut down Bacula, added a Ignore FileSet Changes = yes
directive to the fileset (which I understand is dangerous, and which
will be removed shortly).

After restarting Bacula and rerunning the just canceled job, Bacula
still wants to upgrade this job to full. Is there anything else that
I have to do to avoid this full backup, or any other way to work
around the problem?

[Bacula-users] Device is BLOCKED. Why?

2005-11-11 Thread Everton Thomaz
Hi all.

I did some backups from my server and one restore.
After the restore, i'm receiving the following
message:

Device status:
Device DLT (/dev/nst0) open but no Bacula volume is
mounted.
Device is BLOCKED waiting for media.
Total Bytes Read=0 Blocks Read=0 Bytes/block=0

Why my device is blocked? My media DLT is on the
drive. What's happening?

Thanks,

One question first: Have you already tried a recovery which includes
files from pools on tape and disk-based tools? I'd recommend to analyze
the results of trying this and first creating a disaster recovery
procedure with such a setup...

Then, I only found one way to handle your setup (mine is similar). Make
sure that job level upgrades don't happen (which _can_ be a serious
problem. Adding new clienst is the simple case.) or at least that
volumes for the pools involved can not be automatically created, so that
you have the chance to manually intervene when necessary.

I don't know of any option to let Bacula handle such a scenario
automatically correct. I'm counting on python scripting, but didn't
investigate yet. Also, I assume that python events and Bacula control
from a python method are not yet ready to suport the necessary operations.

Re: [Bacula-users] Ignore FileSet Changes being ignored

2005-11-11 Thread Arno Lehmann

Hi,

On 11.11.2005 18:32, John Kodis wrote:

No. I don't know if I learnt this from the manual, some release notes,
or The Hard Way(TM) but the fisrt job after adding ignore fileset
changes will be a full one. The reason is that the fingerprint of the
fileset, which is stored in the catalog, is changed with adding the
option, and thus this fileset is considered a new one.

No, I don't think so.

I think this looks as though the connection between FD and SD can't be

Verify that the windows client can resolve the address of the SD, and
that it can connect to it. Firewall is the keyword here.

This looks rather straightforward. Verify that the bacula user has all
necessary permissions to see and to run the script in question.

Use su to become the bacula user. Then try an ls -l on the path name you
set up. Next, try to run the script with the necessary parameters, and
see what happens.

If thos works, make sure that your run before script actually does
something by simply adding some echo lines into it. Finally, verify that
the output from the database dump goes to the file you have in your fileset.

Work through (i.e. read and run Bacula at the same time) the Tutorial chapter

Ok, it was easier than I thought. Currently I only tested autoconf/configure.
I have to compile and tested it yet, but that has to wait 'till Monday.
From what i saw in filed/acl.c I'm quite confident this will work.
A patch is attached. Well you're right backup.c/restore.c changed quite a
bit. I'm not sure if I will back port the changes. Think I'll decide on
Monday.

checking for acltotext in -lsec... yes

  ACL support:yes

bash-2.05$ grep lsec src/filed/Makefile

Attila

How much effort would it be to back port the ACL changes to 1.36.3? I'm
a bit reluctant to update the production system to 1.38 right now.

You could look at it. Perhaps it wouldn't be too much effort, but the
code is conciderably changed because it has been moved around a lot
(new files). The code is now much simpler (at least the main line
code). However, there might be some complications with new features
or something. I'm having trouble keeping up as it is, so it isn't
something I would do, but I'd be happy to answer questions.
My advice would be to test 1.38 and move up -- aside from problems
with multiple concurrent jobs accessing autochangers, where users pull
cassettes in and out, it seems to be very stable (more so than 1.36 IMO).

All right, I'll do. That said, it may take some time since I've no sun

autoconf is easy to fix. I have detection working now. There is
also an issue with a ifdef in src/filed/acl.c that now that I look at
the code again, limits 1.38.0 to FreeBSD, Darwin, and Linux. I had
just added FreeBSD and Darwin to the ifdef when I made my changes. I
was trying not to change too many things and I had only tested those
platforms. I am thinking that we should remove the ifdef or at least
 enable the POSIX platforms. Thoughts?

I probably won't have any problems moving a #ifdef, but I'll need to see it. I
consider such changes low impact if it just adds code for another platform.

As for Solaris, I have things mostly working on Solaris. There is at
least one bug in the code currently in 1.38.0 and I am seeing another
strangeness when ACLs are restored. I also have to figure out the
best way to bypass smartalloc to free the system call memory since I
am very new to smartalloc. The good news is that we have lots of
Sun's around here that the admins have graciously given me access so
I can test things. Hopefully I will have things working by the end
 of the weekend.

Try: actuallyfree(void *);

Hello,

Does anyone have any *real* bacula .conf examples of using the new
TLS data encryption feature? I would like to add them to the manual.

Here are the TLS portions of my configuration files:

I just set mine up today. I started with Landon's configuration, but
one thing I noticed is that (based on watching with tcpdump) I wasn't
getting an encrypted connection from the FD to the SD. I had to add
TLS Require = yes to the FileDaemon section on the client
configuration to get an encrypted connection. I'm no SSL guru, so maybe
I've missed some other problem in my configuration.

Whoops, I forgot that section. Yeah, you'll need the TLS Require line.

  FileDaemon {
Name = client1-fd
...

# I think this is used when connecting to the storage daemon.
TLS Require = yes
TLS CA Certificate File = /etc/bacula/ssl/ca.pem
TLS Certificate = /etc/bacula/ssl/client1-cert.pem
TLS Key = /etc/bacula/ssl/client1-key.pem
  }

Since the storage daemon isn't validating client certificates (and
doesn't really need to -- the client can only connect with a valid
cookie from the Directory), you shouldn't need to specify
Certificate/Key pair here.

Is the patch mentioned in this thread integrated into 1.38, that is
do ACLs work with FreeBSD? And second, even more important to me,
do ACLs work with Solaris clients?

I can confirm that Solaris doesn't work. Their is code for Solaris
ACLs but the configure script does not detect ACL support on
Solaris.
I helped with Darwin and FreeBSD but I have not had time to
really look
at Solaris fully until yesterday. Seems disaster recovery is now
top
priority for the next few weeks. Ah, the life of changing
priorities.

Ok, than I will try to patch configure.in to detect ACL support on
solaris.

That would be very kind of you ... :-)

All right, I'll do. That said, it may take some time since I've no sun
at home and are not that familiar with autoconf.

autoconf is easy to fix. I have detection working now. There is also
an issue with a ifdef in src/filed/acl.c that now that I look at the
code again, limits 1.38.0 to FreeBSD, Darwin, and Linux. I had just
added FreeBSD and Darwin to the ifdef when I made my changes. I was
trying not to change too many things and I had only tested those
platforms. I am thinking that we should remove the ifdef or at least
enable the POSIX platforms. Thoughts?

Yes you're right, I was fooled by the #elif defined(HAVE_SUN_OS). Well
what about this line:
|| defined(HAVE_SUN_OS)   /* tested   -- compile with -lsec */
Never trust a comment ;-)

Yes i would second enabling the POSIX platforms although my main concern
is now to have it work under Solaris.

As for Solaris, I have things mostly working on Solaris. There is at
least one bug in the code currently in 1.38.0 and I am seeing another
strangeness when ACLs are restored. I also have to figure out the best
way to bypass smartalloc to free the system call memory since I am very
new to smartalloc. The good news is that we have lots of Sun's around

What about
/* ACTUALLYFREE -- Interface to system free() function to release
buffers allocated by low-level routines. */

void actuallyfree(void *cp)

here that the admins have graciously given me access so I can test
things. Hopefully I will have things working by the end of the weekend.

That would be *great*. If you need some help don't hesitate to contact me.
Well I'm off the net for the weekend.

Attila
