One of the biggest drawbacks of getting into admin, instead of writing code, is
that admin-people doesn't like text files ... so much less BBEdit for me, which
makes me sad (and often frustrated).

How should "overscroll" work?

2023-11-29 Thread Jan Erik Moström
I got asked today if "type writer mode" was implemented in BBEdit. I was going
to answer "sure" but then I tried and what I see is that I can continue to type
and end up at the bottom om the window. Not until I press down arrow the last
line ended up in the middle of the window.

I have never thought about this, but I think that this person expected that the
line that is edited is kept in the middle of the window.

Is the possible in BBEdit? (I personally don't like this but ...)

General question: File not found

2023-05-06 Thread Jan Erik Moström
Hi,

I don't think this is a BBEdit problem, but using BBEdit was how I first
discovered this. And it doesn't seem to happen with non-text files.

I have files in a folder hierarchy, when I double-click a file to open it I get
this error message

> File not found (macOS error code: -43).

and

> File not found (macOS error code: -43).
>
> [CApplication.mm:5616]

First I thought it was a problem with Path Finder (which I normally use) but I
get the same result when I try in Finder.

If I move the enclosing folder to the Desktop I get the same error, but if I
move the file to the Desktop then I can open it. I tried open the file using
TextEdit but it doesn't open the file (but I get no error message).

This doesn't happen all the time, sometimes it works. And everything seems just
fine when using git, the files are checked in etc.

These are regular text files - markdown formatted with .md extension (I haven't
seen this on any other files ... but I'm mostly using text files). My only
guess here is that it

The files are all on the internal "disk", I'm using macOS 13.3.1 and Disk
Utility says everything is OK.

However, I just discovered that there is one common thing for these files: they
all have enclosing folders with the characters å, ä or ö in them, but this
shouldn't be a problem should it? Or is it git that is doing something strange
here?

I'm grateful for any advice.

It's difficult to say since you give no details, what do you want to do in more

If it's a matter of establishing "photo site" (i.e. a site with photo albums)

Check site syntax/links

2022-01-03 Thread Jan Erik Moström
I'm playing with creating a site with some simple tools ... in other words I'm
hand-coding a site using BBEdit.

I've now finished the site and want to check syntax/links and have two
questions:

- All files but one are markdown files and I use the deploy command to build
the HTML files. So the syntax/links check doesn't really work on those files,
what is the best way to check syntax/links in this case?

My workaround was to create a second project and point to the folder that
contains the resulting HTML files and do the checking from that project. Is
there a better solution for this?

- I use a readymade template for the site and it uses the idiom 'href="#"' for
creating the top-level menu item. The syntax checker complains about this, is
there a way to turn this off?

I suggest that you add Marked to your toolbox, it's an excellent tool for
converting Markdown into various other formats, combining separate markdown

Unfortunately, I haven't used TextEdit for many years so I can't really offer

I'm mostly thinking of the extra work creating a blog, generating index pages
etc. I mean that there are a several static site generators (usually with some
kind of blogging support) like Pelican, Hugo, Nicola, Jekyll, etc, that handles
that automatically. Manually maintaining a site with a fairly large number of
blog entries quickly become cumbersome (if you want support for categories,
tags, etc), while it's easier to maintain a site with a smaller number of pages
(think documentation or a smaller info site).

Since BBEdit doesn't have support for generating various kind of indexes (that
I know of), I was wondering if Code Modules have support for this. I might have
missed it but I didn't see any indication of this.

Sharing preferences

2021-07-27 Thread Jan Erik Moström
Before figuring out the best way to do this for me, I would like to ask
a few questions.

- In chapter 2 in the manual there is a description of how to share the
application support folder using Dropbox or iCloud. The preferred way is
Dropbox, I assume iCloud causes some problems?

- Are there any other methods of sharing the application support folder
than Dropbox/iCloud? I would prefer not installing Dropbox, and one of
the machines I have uses a different Apple ID. What my machines already
have in common is, of course, git, and a shared folder on a Synology
server, but I don't know if this helps in any way.

Window management and virtual desktop question

2021-06-11 Thread Jan Erik Moström
I tend to use BBEdit for various things, note taking, writing code, etc.
I also use virtual desktops for doing various things, admin, writing
code, email, etc.

My "problem" is that I want to have the code window(s) only on the code
writing desktop, admin window(s) only on the admin desktop, note taking
window on all desktops, and so on.

Is there some way to config the windows of BBEdit in this way, i.e.
something like this

Window 1 - desktop 1 only
Window 2 - desktop 2 only
Window 3 - desktop 2 only
Window 4 - desktop 1 only
Window 5 - all desktops

I don't think it's possible but I've missed things before. macOS only
have "this desktop" or "all desktops"

Re: Two files in the same window

2021-05-28 Thread Jan Erik Moström

Thanks to all of you for confirming my own findings.

In this case I solved it by using "Find differences", not ideal but ...

The reason why I want to avoid sharing the whole screen is simply that
while talking over Zoom, I use several application at the same time, - I
also take notes in BBEdit and/or Devonthink, have background information
available (web pages, bbedit, omnioutliner, etc) as well as the usual
background noice of notifications popping up. Not to mentions that
during lectures I'm also using the chat functionality in Zoom (students
VERY much prefer sending questions via chat instead of just asking).

This is why I really dislike powerpoint (difficult/impossible to do this
as far as I know) and very much prefer Keynote and Deckset.

But, my need for displaying two text files side by side isn't something
that happen often so I'll manage via some "hack" when I need it.

Take a look at "Languages" and "Text Colors" to do this, I have it set
up to use different colors, font size and some other small stuff for
Markdown, Python, and Text Files.

I would say that you need some supporting software, either to make a

biggest problem would be the linking part - if you can use tags/search

I haven't tried doing a zettelkasten but a simple hierarchical folder
structure, combine that with BBEdit projects and search functionality
and it's pretty powerful. No links etc but perfectly OK.

2019-11-27 Thread Jan Erik Moström

On 27 Nov 2019, at 8:02, Andrew Brown wrote:

Is there any way of feeding files from BBEdit direct into a MySQL
database?

This is a really wild idea which might or might not be useful.

If the data that you want to clean up is really regular/structured you
could perhaps use text factories to clean up the data and generate SQL
commands that you then feed to the MySQL database.

Other possible way is to write a Python script which then talk to the
database to insert the data.

But it all depends on how the data is structured and looks like.

Also, it's probably easier to use some kind of direct MySQL library
(depending on what tools you decide to use) as ODBC strength in the
cross-platform (different databases) properties (at least this is how I
understand it). If this is a one-time thing it's probably easier to
simple use the built-in library in some language or directly use the
mysql command line tool.

I haven't done anything major myself, but I have several time generated
a file with SQL commands which I then have loaded into a database from
the command line.

Project with several files open and visible?

2019-10-11 Thread Jan Erik Moström
I'm trying out a new way of working with BBEdit, that is I'm trying out
the project feature (in my work I usually have text files open that are
not related to each other, this autumn is a bit different).

The Project feature is nice and work well for what I'm doing, but can I
view two files at the same time? (Assuming that I have the editor pane
visible) I can of course open them in new windows but I imagined myself
doing something like this:

+ Open the project
+ Click the "Full screen" button
+ Divide the editor pane in three parts
+ Open three files in these parts

This would mean that on my desktop monitor I would see the file listing
and three files at the same time. The only way I've come up with doing
something like this is to

+ Open the project window with the editor pane visible
+ Open a file
+ Go full screen
+ Close the editor pane and let the file move to a new window
+ Open new files and move them to separate windows
+ Arrange the windows so this kind of line up

While this work, kind of, it's not very elegant and I assume that I'm
missing some way of doing what I want to do. I didn't see anything
obvious in the manual and I can't find anything in the menus. So what am
I missing?

web site templates

2019-09-22 Thread Jan Erik Moström

A question about a good source for web site templates.

I want to make some small static web sites for various stuff and thought
that I could use BBEdit for creating/updating the sites (yes, I know
about tools like RapidWeaver, Hugo, Pelican, etc but they are too
complicated for what I have in mind).

Unfortunately my graphic design skills isn't world famous ... not even
within my family. So I did a search for "free web sites templates" and
ended up with a long list of web sites that offers "free" templates
(mostly WP templates) ... so I ended up looking at Hugo and WordPress
templates.

But before I sit down and try to convert them to be usable with BBEdit I
want to ask if anyone knows of a good source for HTML5 templates that
are not ... let's say, of doubtful quality ... and doesn't depend on
frameworks like bootstrap etc (I want small, self contained static web
sites)?

Re: BBEdit for Writers

2017-10-19 Thread Jan Erik Moström

On 19 Oct 2017, at 15:17, DavidWeinberger wrote:

It's with a bit of hesitation I add my opinions to this thread. First of
all, I firmly believe that the choice of writing tools is very personal
- for example I love my Lamy 2000 fountain pen, not to mention my multi
colored Pilot G-Tec-C4, add paper of good quality and I'm quite happy.

But it's not practical for me to use these tool all the time, I need to
produce electronic documents and here my tools of choice are BBEdit and
Ulysses. I haven't used Word or any other word processor for the last 25
years (except for a few times when I've been forced to). And as you
might guess I've been using some kind of markup language, a few examples
are roff/nroff/groff/troff, latex, tex, markdown, html and a few more.

All of these have (had) their uses but the format that have had the
biggest effect for me is markdown. Today, I write web pages, comments to
students, course documents, instruction, slides, documentations, etc all
in markdown or some dialect of it. However, if I'm writing something
that is going to be printed I'm using LaTeX - I actually was thinking
about this earlier this week when I was writing something that is going
to be printed. I found it very cumbersome to write latex and when I get
some spare time I'm going to invest that time trying to find the best
way to write in markdown but convert to latex so I can get the
formatting right (I know about some tools but I have some specific
requirements that I need to investigate).

But back to the subject, for me and for what I'm doing markdown (I'm
including the various dialects I use) is a very flexible, powerful way
of marking up text so I can use it in various ways. My documents usually
include headlines, lists, images, links to various online resources,
source code, etc. If I were to write a book I wouldn't hesitate to use
markdown.

My current tools to achieve this is BBEdit, Ulysses, Marked, Deckset and
Multimarkdown.

But as I said above, the choice of writing tools is very personal and
also depends on factors like what is being written, external
requirements, etc.

Shortcuts in dialog boxes

2017-03-01 Thread Jan Erik Moström
Having received a new machine at work I've made a clean install without
carrying over any settings at all from previous installations (and I'm
actually reading the manual ... for the first time in 15 years or so
:D).

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that on my old machine I was able to change
paragraph indentation in the hard wrap dialog by pressing cmd-X where X
would show up when I pressed the cmd-key. On my new machine this doesn't
happen ... so I assume there is an option somewhere that I've missed but
I can't find it and my feeble attempts in using the manual didn't result
in anything.

2015-12-16 Thread Jan Erik Moström
Since I'm having a low workload today (thank you universe) I'm doing a bit
of cleanup and restructuring of my computers - one thing being to clean up
my "dropbox mess".

My question is simply: is it possible to have the "Application
Support/BBEdit" directory in a subfolder somewhere? (I keep other
applications data files in a shared folder buried deep in some subfolder)

The manual indicates that it's not possible so I'm just checking to see
that I'm not missing something.

Changing setup ?

2015-06-15 Thread Jan Erik Moström
This is probably something I should already know but ...

I use BBEdit for a lot of different stuff and I've noticed that I like
different settings depending on what I'm doing, for example: if I'm writing
documents (in markdown or latex) I like a larger font size and also a
different font, if I'm writing code then I like a smaller font size and a
standard font, etc.

Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to quickly change the settings so
I usually use single setting.

My question: is there a simple way to change font, font-size, color scheme
that is better than an applescript? (and how to change color scheme using
Applescript??)

*tell* *application* BBEdit

*tell* *window* 1

*set* display font *to* Bitstream Vera Sans Mono

*set* display font size *to* 15

*set* display font style *to* *italic* -- This doesn't seem to work

*get* display font style -- results in missing value

*end* *tell*

*end* *tell*

As of BBEdit 11, you can configure each of these properties (font, font
size, and color scheme) on a per-language basis by adding custom language
preference(s) in the Languages preference pane. :-)

[PS: Font settings are in the Editor section of the language prefs sheet,
and color scheme in the Display section.]

Re: A notebook for BBEdit?

2015-04-30 Thread Jan Erik Moström
I use DayOne for keeping a journal (which also involves Dropbox, Workflow
and Drafts on iOS and BBEdit on Mac ... I don't want personal stuff on
machine at work).

My use case for that question is that I frequently comment on student
reports, thesis reports, etc, etc. These are things that 99.99% of the time
are write-it, trash-it, forget-it stuff for me. But once in a while there
is some reason to pull out one of them ... but I don't really want to
actively save and organize them. So I want to change my previous approach
to write-it, archive-it, forget-it without having all the notes
cluttering my normal folder structure.

Re: Stationery + placeholders

2014-10-03 Thread Jan Erik Moström
Unfortunately #bbinclude doesn't work for me (at least not from what I
can see from my tests), it works well when dealing with web sites but
I want to make a general document template ... one that can be placed
in BBEdits stationery folder and accessed using File-New with
stationary.

I'm probably not being clear so I'm going with an example, I'm using
Multimarkdown a lot and I want each document to have the following
header:

--
title: Insertion point here
date: current date
author: Jan Erik Moström
id: unique ID

--

Right now I can make this happen using a clipping that looks like this

--
title: ##
date: #DATE#
author: Jan Erik Moström
id: #UUID#

##
--

and I can use this by

+ creating a new document
+ set the language to show markdown related clippings
+ select the clipping and insert it

alternative by saving the clipping as a Universal item

+ creating a new document
+ select the clipping and insert it

Or to make these action quicker, define a shortcut for the clipping
(say ctrl-alt-command-M) and do

command-N, ctrl-alt-command-M

which isn't bad. But I'm curious to know if it's possible to make this
one action instead of two.

Stationery + placeholders

2014-10-02 Thread Jan Erik Moström
Is it possible to create a stationery with some placeholders?

Sometimes I create documents with the same basic structure
(stationery) but would like to be able to automatically insert some
data, for example the date/time (placeholders).

I've never managed to get something to work but I assume it can be
done since BBEdit usually can do everything I want :D

Setting up multimarkdown as preview filter

2014-09-08 Thread Jan Erik Moström
Hi,
I'm finally setting up multimarkdown as a preview filter at work and
I'm doing something wrong. According to the manual I should make a
symlink to the mmd binary in

~/Library/Application Support/BBEdit/Preview Filters/

but since I've got my BBEdit folder on dropbox I put it here

~/DropBox/Application Support/BBEdit/Preview Filters/

$ pwd
/Users/jem/DropBox/Application Support/BBEdit/Preview Filters
$ ls -l
total 8
lrwxr-xr-x 1 jem staff 28 Sep 8 15:13 multimarkdown -
/usr/local/bin/multimarkdown

I quit and re-launch BBEdit but when I preview a markdown file there
are no alternatives in the filter menu. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Re: Using BBEdit as a *nix remote text editor?

2014-08-31 Thread Jan Erik Moström
At work I regularly edit files that resides on the server. I do it in
one of two ways - either Interarchy using the edit command or mounting
the remote server using ExpanDrive. Both these solutions use sftp (in
my case).

local OSX machine, but I'm wondering if anyone has magic that could
 accomplish the same result remotely.

I'm not aware of anything to do this. There have been past attempts (even by
me) but nothing successful. The best I came up with was automating the
 process of:

 - scp localfile osxhost:localfile
 - ssh osxhost bbedit -wait --resume localfile
 - scp osxhost:localfile localfile

It was too fragile though; it was quite a while ago and I don't recall the
 problems.

I'd love to hear someone else saying they have a solution for this one.
Would be great if I could set EDITOR on remote machines to point back to
 bbedit.

 * Can the BBEdit shell workspace be directed to any SSH connection?

The worksheet is not a TTY, so you cannot have an ssh *session*. You can
send commands to remote servers via ssh from a worksheet (assumes ssh key
login). I use this method quite a lot to (eg) set permissions for files on
remote server, or restart a running process on remote server, etc. I also
use worksheet to copy files to remote server using rsync; especially handy
 for mirroring sites.

 * I am assuming that between the open via ftp/sftp, and the mounting of
remote file systems, BBEdit should be able to access and edit the
remote files. Are there any gotchas here I should be aware of?

There may be some gotchas, but none I think you need to be aware of. BBEdit
has quite good handling of files on remote volumes. I sometimes use the
built-in s/ftp tools; I used to use external s/ftp (Interarchy) almost
exclusively; I now use mounted remote volumes with ExpanDrive.

[The new version of ExpanDrive has introduced some strange race conditions
with its new local file cache; I've not found the reproducible steps yet.
Anyone else seeing problems with new ExpanDrive 'modifying files since last
 save'?]

As someone new to BBEdit, you will bring a fresh perspective to editing
files on remote servers. I look forward to hearing what solution(s) you find
 work best for you.

Correct; and unfortunately since system-intrinsic preferences syncing went
the way of MobileMe, there's no good system-supported solution for this.
It's unlikely that we'd undertake to try and do it ourselves.

That said, *some* preferences data (which doesn't reside in the
system-resident preferences) can be relocated to Dropbox. I believe chapter
2 talks about how to do this, as well. (It's a trick similar to relocating
the Application Support subfolder, but instead applies to the contents of
 ~/Library/BBEdit/.)

Yes, this is what I'm doing now but Since the system does not support
relocation of an application’s core preferences data file
(~/Library/Preferences/com.barebones.bbedit.plist`), you cannot
directly sync these settings. You may, however, copy the core
preferences file to other machines to ‘seed’ them with your preferred
prefs settings.

To use it, all you need to do is the following:
 * Move ~/Library/Application Support/BBEdit to ~/Dropbox/Application
 Support/BBEdit

From then on, BBEdit should load from Dropbox and it should replicate to
other machines. You may need to delete any other local ~/Application
Support/BBEdit directories on other machines. I can't recall if Dropbox has
 precedence or not.

See page 38 of the BBEdit manual for the complete details.
