I don' think people should be encouraged to install 7.6 beta just to
fix the scanner problems. SBS 7.6 is far from ready to be used by the
 typical SB user.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6 scanning playlists is soooo slow

2011-07-25 Thread MeSue

This was the initial scan that started automatically after installing
7.6. After 9 hours of scanning I stopped it before bed. It had been
stuck on that one playlist for several hours.

I deleted a bunch of playlists, including some large ones that might
have had missing files in them. Then I restarted the scanning, thinking
it would finish overnight, but it only got 4 songs. My server does other
things at night so that might be what interrupted it that time.

So just a few minutes ago I restarted SbS and kicked off another look
for new and changed scan. Hopefully cleaning up the playlists folder
does the trick. I still have some large ones, but they should not have
any missing files.

There are no shortcuts or symlinks, and the files are all local to the
server running SbS. Server is 1.8Ghz single-core, with 2 GB RAM. Scans
on 7.5 used to take less than 2 hours for full scan, and 20 minutes or
so for new and changed.

Third time's the charm... I hope!

Based on my own experience I would have thought that it would take
40-45 min for a complete rescan.

When doing a full clear rescan, 7.6 now builds a whole new library
database on the side, while keeping the current one in place. After the
scan is finished the new one is swapped in.

Try disabling the MusicIP plugin.

If that's not it, disable all plugins, run a full scan, then gradually
add the plugins back in until you figure out which is trashing things.

What do you mean by that?

I never had a problem with pre-7.6 (MySQL) - what problems were there in the
past?

Do you mean that browsing was slow when scanning, or playing would stutter due
to rebuffering.

Or perhaps because the scanner was modifying the same DB content as the
browsing/playback, that this caused problems?

In 7.6, I think the scanner (internal+external?) scan to a new db, and then
overwrites the db when when the scan is complete. Similar issues could occur
if browsing just as the scanner overwrites the DB?

Yes, you now have to wait for the first scan to fully finish before any music
can be played.

I don't know what would happen if you tried to browse music folder whilst a
scan is in progress - does this create content in the current DB that is then
overwritten when the scan finishes? Or perhaps browse music folder is disabled
when there is a scan in progress.

You might want to point the server at some subset of your music library
until you get this sorted out. Better yet, I recommend creating a small
test library by copying about 100 albums to a new folder. Pick some
compilations, some artists with one album, some artists with more than
one album, albums from different genre, some multi-disc sets, a few
albums with non-ASCII characters in the artist, album, or song name.
Shouldn't take more than five minutes to create such a test library.

Also... There have been a lot of problems with 'Abort scan'. It may or
may not be working correctly.

After aborting make sure there's no scanner.exe process running. If
there is, kill it. If you're having problems running the initial scan,
then you may as well also shut down the server and completely clear the
cache. A new initial scan will be launched when you restart the server.
Clear only the cache, not the server prefs.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6 scanning playlists is soooo slow

Sounds like you have a problem unrelated to 7.6.

I have an EX490 server with 16,750 tracks, 7.5 would complete a full
scan in approx. 20 mins 7.6 does it in 15 mins. My EX490 is only a
2.2GHz Celeron so not hugely more powerful than your EX470.

As Slate suggested, I would have expected you to be completing a full
scan in 7.5 in around 45 mins rather than the two hours you suggest.
Have a look at the processes running on the server, sorted by CPU
activity in case something is hogging it in the background. When I
first got the EX490 loaded data on it, the supplied Twonky Media was
running the CPU at near 100% permanently as it didn't like a couple of
video files.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6 scanning playlists is soooo slow

2011-07-25 Thread MeSue

Okay, I found a few things and managed to get a successful scan on a
sub-set of my library.

1) There were remnants of a Firefly Media Server service that kept
trying to start on my server, several times per minute. It had
thousands of entries in the event viewer. I haven't used this in ages
and had no idea it was still even on there. So, it's gone now.

2) I had playlists in MusicIP. I deleted them and reloaded the MIP
cache and was able to get a successful scan of ~1200 files. MIP is set
to retrieve mixable status only here, too.

3) Abort Scan is definitely not working.

4) Using cleanup in the control panel messes up permissions on the
cache folder until my server machine is restarted. I stopped using that
and just manually emptied the folder to get a clean scan.

Now I am trying the scan on my full library of 25,000 files.

rbz: two hours was just a guess. I don't really know how long it took
the last time (it was so long ago), but I'm pretty certain it was less
than 2 hours. I'm not real certain of the new and changed rescan times,
either. When I'd add new music I would create a playlist of the new
songs and then do rescan playlists and that usually took 10-20 minutes
depending on how much music I added. Twonky is disabled.

Thanks for all the hand-holding. I will keep you posted...

What a nightmare.

The abort scan feature _must_ be fixed. You cannot require users to
delete the cache folder or kill a scanner process to recover from a
botched scan. You must be able to get back to a place where you can at
least launch a full scan from scratch.

I'm slowly losing hope that 7.6 will ever be ready for public

Obviously someone at Logitech decided its ready for a the masses now.
 Lets see what happens.

I wonder if they actually think this. It's very difficult to believe.
I'm more inclined to think that they've gotten to the point where
throwing beta software out into public is considered acceptable due to
the lack of internal QA that can be had.

The situation has gone from bad to worse in a very short period of
time.

[SlimDevices: Beta] MySB 7.6: SqueezePad not getting any status updates anymore

2011-07-25 Thread bluegaspode

Any idea what has changed so that SqueezePad isn't getting status
updates anymore?

Neither my subscription for playerstatus nor menustatus gives any
response.
