[Blind-Computing] List Guidelines Reminder

2010-07-01 Thread Moderator

Welcome to the Blind Computing mailing list.

This list has been created for the purpose of discussing any and all aspects
of computing with the blind user in mind.

List Guidelines:

The following are guidelines set forth by the list management team and every
member is expected to abide by them.

1. Profanity and ethnic or racial slurs will not be tolerated.

2. Flaming of individuals or groups or organizations of any kind will not
be tolerated.

3. Advertising is not permitted.

4. Political or religious inferences or discussions are not permitted.

5. Forwarded messages and attachments are not permitted. If you have an
article or message of interest which relates to the nature of this list send
it to the list owner and if it is appropriate, it will be posted to the
list. Additionally if you want to make an announcement about another list
send it

to the list owner for consideration. Do not post it to the list before
obtaining approval.

6. No off-topic posts! Simply placing off topic in the subject line does not
make it all right. Off-topic posts include but are not limited to
discussions

of Blind advocacy groups,
products for the blind that are not computer-related items, Transportation
for the blind, and Job opportunities or concerns. If you are not sure
whether
or not your topic is appropriate contact the list owner for approval before
posting.

7. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should only post in the
following manner:

Using the TO: field with only one list address.

The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules
to go by the To: field often times such rules get fowled up and in effect
do not work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists
at the same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for
each and every list. This practice does nothing ut clutter up such lists
with

unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators.

8. On topic posts may include but are not limited to discussions of
Screen readers and magnifiers, computer peripherals, (scanners printers
Braille devices etc) Computer operation, Computer maintenance and Computer
building.

9. Subject lines should be clear and to the point! Subject lines such as I
Need help or Does anyone know are not descriptive and might be ignored
by the very person who might otherwise have answered your query. Also do not
include any member names in the subject line.

10. Keep the message content relative to the topic being discussed! If the
conversation starts to drift from the original topic initiate a new

conversation message with a new subject line to reflect the new topic.

11. No auto responders are to be used on this list! Those who use auto
responders for vacations and so forth must make sure that this list is not

included. Any person who sends an auto response message will be removed!

12. The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with
flirting or other such inappropriate activities. this
is not a high tech swap shop or anything of that nature at all. This means
that goods and or services will not be bought or sold using this forum.

No message headers please! Nobody wants to read an irrelevant message before
reading your post.

If you want to plug your business church or whatever do it somewhere else
not on this list!

If you want to include contact information and a tag line at the bottom of
your messages feel free to do so but do not make another message out of it.

Remember that there are people of different walks of life origin age groups
and levels of computer experience on the list. Individuals with more
knowledge
and experience should be patient with those who are trying to become more
proficient.

If you have comments, questions or concerns about how the list is being run
do not post them to the list contact the list management team.

It is not the place for any individual list member to admonish another
member for an improper post let the management Team do their job.

Hopefully everyone will benefit from this list and it will allow all of us
to be more comfortable and productive using these machines that help us get

thru this thing called life!

* By joining this list you accept the guidelines as outlined above, and
agree to abide by them. If you don't agree, then you should unsubscribe.

Ok, I wish to bring this back on topic. I am considering using System
Access to Go quite frequently now I have an active and reliable internet
connection. I do have an account on there, but have forgotten the pin.
So I went onto the log in page at www.serotek.com, and followed the
instructions to retrieve my details. The problem is, I have not received
anything from Serotek support with my details. I have tried this twice,
on two separate occasions, and I just haven't heard from them. One
possibility is that the e-mail address they have I may have deleted, so
it's probably bouncing back to them. Should I therefore create a new
System Access to Go account?
Many thanks, and it may go as far as getting System Access Standalone

I am trying to get started with a facebook account, I have successfully
sighned up, but the one that was the m.facebook.com seems to have bit
the dust.

Facebook it's self displays, but Jaws seems to be not as responsive or
in sync completely with the edit areas, and also, I seem to get a time
lapse while on the page and doing a refresh gives me the page cannot be
displayed thingy...

So I need to know what gives with all this before I decide if it's
worth it or not. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe it's xp with ie 8 and jaws 11 but not the update of jaws 11
causing some of my headaches?

Hi Arianna,

Yeah, that's exactly what you want, you want to hear the other machine's
Jaws speaking so that you know what's going on on the distant computer.
You don't need your jaws while working on the other machine. As soon as
you get your job done, swich to your computer by hitting the scroll
lock.

Another thing folks, while manipulating the distant machine, you will
not be able to use alt tab to swich between the open windows in your
client's computer, you should first hit windows key + tab once, then
releace them and start using alt tab just then. If you start alt tabbing
without hitting the mentioned keystroke first, you can not swich between
open applications.

Again, sorry if i am a bit confused in guiding you, but that's how i
learned it, just by experementing

Hi there,

There is a free program called team viewer that enables one person to
control another's machine. This program is designed essencially for
the sighted user, however, I tested it with jaws and it works quite
well, in fact there are still some few things one can not do on the
client's machine especially performing specific jaws hotKeys, but i
was able to fix nearly everything that needed to be fixed on that
distant machine.

Maybe when someone much more intelligent than I figures out all the

Hi Arianna,

Yeah, that's exactly what you want, you want to hear the other
machine's Jaws speaking so that you know what's going on on the
distant computer. You don't need your jaws while working on the
other machine. As soon as you get your job done, swich to your
computer by hitting the scroll lock.

Another thing folks, while manipulating the distant machine, you
will not be able to use alt tab to swich between the open windows
in your client's computer, you should first hit windows key + tab
once, then releace them and start using alt tab just then. If you
start alt tabbing without hitting the mentioned keystroke first,
you can not swich between open applications.

Again, sorry if i am a bit confused in guiding you, but that's how
i learned it, just by experementing

Good luck

Hi there,

There is a free program called team viewer that enables one
person to control another's machine. This program is designed
essencially for the sighted user, however, I tested it with jaws
and it works quite well, in fact there are still some few things
one can not do on the client's machine especially performing
specific jaws hotKeys, but i was able to fix nearly everything
that needed to be fixed on that distant machine.

I'd mentioned before that the only thing you need to do after gaining
access to the client, is to press the scroll lock once and nearly all
your actions will be transfered to the distant computer. Download the
program and install it. precede with the steps to get connected to the

If you're using Windows Vista and Windows mail, I'm pretty sure the command
is control plus shift plus C when you're focused on your inbox. This should
place you in your contacts list. When you locate the contact you want to
email, go to the file menu, then new, then message, and press enter. This
may not be the most efficient way to do this, but it's the only way I know
of right now. Hope it helps.

[Blind-Computing] System Access and Remote Access?

2010-07-01 Thread chris hallsworth

Hello all,
With System Access's Remote Access feature, is it quite like Tandem,
where I could connect to somebody's machine no matter where they are in
the world, and help out with their computer? If so, does the other
machine also have to have System Access like they have to have JAWS for
Tandem? If so, does the other person even need a System Access account
for them to authorize the connection with me?

Another question, and sorry about all this folks; I am new to System Access.
Can I, say, connect to my laptop remotely from my netbook, and get the
speech output like you would with Window-Eyes? For example, the version
of System Access on the client would voice the output from the version
of System Access on the server?

Hope I am making myself clear.
Having said all this, the reason I am asking is that I see that I can
add System Access Remote Access for just $14.95/month as part of their
Build a Bundle deal.
Many thanks for any answers on this. Yes, I will read the help files

Re: [Blind-Computing] System Access and Remote Access?

2010-07-01 Thread chris hallsworth
It's ok. I read the help files. Sounds ok, but would probably try it for
a month or something. I don't mean a free trial; just pay the $9.95 for
the Remote Access option.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] System Access and Remote Access?

Hello all,
With System Access's Remote Access feature, is it quite like Tandem,
where I could connect to somebody's machine no matter where they are in
the world, and help out with their computer?
Yes, I will read the help files
later, but thought I would ask on here too.

For Lisa and others who may be concerned with knowing the status of
indicator lights on a router or modem, I can determine which lights are on,
off, or blinking with a light probe. Independent Living aids has one for
twenty-three dollars and change. They work well for a number of things. I
use my probe to tell me about the lights on various cooking devices such as
a rice cooker, foreman grill, and many other things. It will find lights on
those little cube shaped power supplies that plug into the wall; the
blinking light on the victor stream;  the light on the computer speakers;
and a host of other things I can't bring to mind just now. Just a thought.

Hope this helps. Take care.

If you're using Windows Vista and Windows mail, I'm pretty sure the
command is control plus shift plus C when you're focused on your inbox.
This should place you in your contacts list. When you locate the contact
you want to email, go to the file menu, then new, then message, and press
enter.

Thank you Deanne for trying to answer my question. I'm not sure if you
really meant Windows Mail or if you are referring to Windows Live Mail; they
are certainly different animals.

When I was using Windows Mail I could bring up a composition session, then
go to the Recipients item under the TOOLS menu and select each and any
entry in my Contacts. But when I try to go to Select From Contacts in
Windows Live Mail I get a message from JAWS that this particular TOOL menu
item is not available.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Accessing Local Contacts Via Windows Live Mail

2010-07-01 Thread Martina Letochová
Hi Bill!
I also use Windows Live Mail and I can at least confirm the shortcut
Ctrl+Shift+C is the same to go to the contact list. Otherwise when composing
a new message I usually just type some letters of the recipient's name, then
shift+tab and come back and the rest comes up. Now I tried your way to
select a contact and here it works fine so dunno what would be going on at
your place. So for now try Ctrl+Shift+C to get into the contact list, select
the one you want, go to the context menu and find send email; enter on
this and that will open a window where you can start a new message to the
selected contact.
HTH,
Martina

Yes, that is so true. We have a modem from Clearwire and all five lights
need to be blinking before we have a strong signal.

Rich has a light probe and it works perfect.
We also use it for lights in the house if they are left on or not and that
probe is a life saver especially when you are paying the electric bill.
