[Blind-Computing] bad muting problem

We need some help; both my friend and I are blind; when on the computer, all of

could hear; when we find someone that can see to look at the screen we find
that the computer has muted itself; we have two questions; is there a way that
a blind person can un/mute the computer; and secondly, what would make the
computer just decide to mute; any help in this mater will be appreciated.

There is a program on the server called mute which will help you out if
you're using XP. Read the documentation for complete instructions. It
doesn't take an install just a short cut key is all.

I think you're using IE 8, it used to be with me in the beginning. for the
correction what you've to do is-

1. Open IE,
2. go to tool menu, select internet options, and press enter on it.
3. press controll+shift+tab for advance page.
4. press tab until you find reset button, press enter on it.
5. complete the rest of work.
when you will open IE next time, it'll be refreshed.

I really like the replacement external drive I bought a lot better since

I realized it was dead when the computer would not recognize the drive when
I plugged it in. Tried it on both computers and called tech support who
sent me to Device Manager or something to see if it was actually being
recognized but no luck.
The company had a service to get the info off the hard drive but it seemed
very expensive for the stuff I had on there. so I gave it up as a lost
cause and bought a Verbatim laptop external drive which I love. I just
need a second one to back up the first.
When I plugged in the "dead" drive it would just spin and not be
recognized on either computer.
I will admit that I did not use the Safely remove hardware when removing
the drive from the computer most of the time. I thought it was just for
flash drives and SD cards.

The file you are trying to delete may be in use by a program that is
running in the backround as a process rather than an application. Such
programs often launch automatically when you turn on your computer, so you
may not be aware of them. To check this, launch the Windoes Task Manager
(Alt-Control-Delete) and Control-Tab to the Processes page. Arrow down
the list of processes to determine whether one of them might be accessing
the file you are trying to delete. If you find the offending process, you
can tab to the End Process button to shut it down so that you can delete
the file.

Hi Dan,
I don't recall you saying what type of file you are trying to delete,
but it is best to know the file type to determine whether it should be
deleted or not.
If you aren't familiar with the processes in the task manager, then it is
best to leave it alone,

because ending a process could have unexpected, and undesirable results.

was configured so that the items in the sent items folder would be deleted
at 4 a.m. on Mondays. That feature has now been unchecked and everything
is working well again.

Hi Francis

Just go to Tools.
Select Options.
From the property sheet that appears, press control+Tab and switch to the
"Send" page.
Here tab once you wil find a field labelled "Keep a copy of sent items in
my 'sent' folder": make sure it is checked.
Once you check this one, click okay. your problem will disappear once and
forever.

Cheers,

Ishe

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Messages deleted from the "sent items" folder

I hope someone will be able to help me with this vexing problem. For a
couple of weeks now, I have noticed that copies of messages I have sent
are deleted from the "sent items" folder on my computer and I can't find
out why this is happening. Normally, I would keep messages in that
folder for about five or six months and then delete those messages that I
don't want. Now, all messages are deleted after about five days so, what
can I do to correct this problem. I am using Outlook Express Version 6.

What should I check or uncheck and where I go to do this.

[Blind-Computing] entering on links does not work;

2010-07-17 Thread Dan Mccurley
For some reason when I arrive at a link it says "link graphic" and when I enter
on it, nothing happens. I assume my computer settings are right because a
sighted friend clicked on the link with the mouse and it worked fine. Could
someone tell me what I need to do in order to be able to enter on the link with

[Blind-Computing] entering on links;

2010-07-18 Thread Dan Mccurley
I should have made myself more clear in that I wasn't referring to links in an
email program but rather links found in a website. Since I wrote to the list
yesterday, I have discovered that I can open the link by hitting the right
mouse key and selecting open; then if I use the left mouse key I can open the
link in question. My question then is what is wrong with my settings such
that I have to use the mouse buttons rather than the enter key; no more than a
month ago I could hit the enter key and things would work just fine. This kind
of stuff makes me hate computers.

I own the Victor Stream. If I'm not mistaken, the Book Sense uses the
Eloquence synthesizer, like JAWS. In my opinion, the Victor Stream has the
worst synthesizer of all three readers. I had the old Book Port, and the
synthesizer wasn't the greatest, but it pronounced most words correctly.
What bothers me most about the VR Stream is the pronunciation. If I had it
to do over again, I would buy the Book Sense.

thank you. I wonder why so many people have the stream and not the

that the voice of the reader would be the one that reads the book when
playing it on the stream; when you say that the synthesis is bad on the

Hi Dan:
The BookSense comes in two models, I'm not sure of the prices, but I think
the less expensive one is comparable to the VR Stream and the more
expensive one is somewhere in the vicinity of $500. The more expensive
model has an FM radio, as well as bluetooth capability, which means you
won't have headphone wires hanging around and getting caught on things. I
looked at the BookSense at the 2010 CSUN conference last March and it is
shaped very much like a small flip-style cell phone. It's much smaller
than the VR Stream, and would be easier to carry with you, especially if
you like to hang your reader on your belt and move around while you
listen. It also plays MS Word files, along with many other file formats.
As far as the volume on the Stream: I own the Stream and have noticed that
the volume is very low using the built in speakers, but with either
headphones or external speakers plugged in, it goes substantially higher.
Without anything plugged into the headphone jack, the volume level stops
at 10; with headphones/speakers plugged in, it goes up to 15. I have had
no trouble listening to NLS books, MP3 files, or text files this way. So
the volume shouldn't be a problem if you use something besides the
built-in speakers.
Below are a couple of links to check out the specs on the BookSense,
including an audio demonstration.

Ok, here are the steps, and the link from whence it came.

If you received this error after uninstalling any application that takes
over the HTML open command (including, but not limited to, Chrome &
Firefox

browsers) you may also need to change the HTM/HTML association in the
registry.
Start, click Run, type Regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.html
Right click the value for the .html key and select Modify...
Change the value from "ChromeHTML" to "htmlfile" (or from FireFoxHTML to
htmlfile)
Repeat these steps for htm and .shtml keys if they exist. You may also
want

to check the xhtml and xhtm keys.

Here is the link to the knowledge-based article;

I was just thinking after all the steps if they did not work, there is one
more but you may have already done this. In outlook express, if you don't
have set on read all messages in HTML checked, you cant use the links by
pushing inter. You have to go to the options tab under tools and go to the
reading tab, check the read all messages in HTML and go to apply. Than try
to use the links in the messages. Heather

Dan, if you are reading through an email and each link is reported to
you as a link by your screen reader then you are reading in HTML. For
example if your scree reader says "link" when it reads http://google.com
then you are reading in HTML. I still think (and I have seen this
before) that there is no default browser set so a download (or any
other) link cannot be opened from within an email. Usually running "Set
program access and defaults" from the START menu and setting IE to the
default browser is enough to fix this, although others think otherwise.

HI Dan;

The way Gerald mentioned is probably the easiest but, below is another way
to do this.
1. Go to the desktop & press enter on My Computer.
2. Highlight Local Disk C, & press enter.
3. Arrow to & highlight Documents & Settings & press enter.
4. In this list of folders arrow to "your name" folder. If this isn't
there

go to the administtrator folder & press enter.
5. Arrow down to the start menu folder & press enter.
6. Now, arrow / highlight the item you want to delete, press your
applications key/context menu key, arrow up to delete , & press enter.
Or,
you can arrow to item you want to remove ,press Alt + F, for the file
menu,

arrow up to the
delete option ,& press enter.

Do step #6 for each item you would like to remove from your start menu.
Now, wasn't Gerald's suggestion much easier! I just felt like typing to
take my mind off my last session with Doctor Phil, it really sucked! LOL

Hope this helped you as much as it helped me! LOL Take care.
Mike

Radio? Sure! Over Ten Thousand Stations
Document Source: Fred's Head from
www.aph.org
It's no secret that I love internet radio and streaming music over the
web.

I am still amazed that you can click a button and hear radio stations from
the
other side of the world.
I've found another Windows only application that is screen reader-friendly
and will tune into more than twelve thousand stations! If you can't find
something
to listen to, you're probably not looking hard enough. The following
directions from the AccessContent Blog will have you listening in minutes!
http://blog.accesscontent.ca/archive/2010/10/20/online-radio-revisited.aspx
Launching Radio Sure:
If you've been successful with the install, the program should launch
automatically afterwards. An online radio station should start playing.
First thing
to do is stop the music and configure a few things. TAB through the screen
until you hear play Button. Press the SPACEBAR and the stream will stop.
TAB to options and press the SPACEBAR to activate the option pages.
General Tab:
Remember, you can move between the tab pages by pressing CONTROL+TAB.
A few things you might consider modifying in the general tab.
. Whether you want the program to start with windows. Don't see the
advantage of this, as I'd rather control when it's playing.
. Whether you want a stream to start playing when you launch the program.
. And my favourite, Global hotkeys. I would urge you to enable this, as it
then gives you the option of controlling RadioSure from anywhere. See
"Global
Hotkey List" at the bottom of this entry.
. Minimize the program to the system tray is handy, as it takes it out of
the way. You can summon it back to the foreground with one of the global
hotkeys
listed below.
We will skip the Skins tab, as it makes no difference to screen readers.
Recording Tab:
Yes, you can record the streams with this program. One thing you might
consider changing on this tab:
. The recording folder. The default is to put it within a folder called
music under the RadioSure program. You can point this folder to any folder
of your
choice with the unlabelled "browse" button. You can look around the other
options on this tab at your leisure.
The Advanced Tab:
. You can choose your preferred audio device. Leave this one alone, unless
you are having audio issues, or prefer to use a specific device.
. I'd suggest checking the Always show station in the window title, so you
can easily hear the station name by pressing INSERT+T withmost screen
readers.
. I'd uncheck Show pictures related to songs, but that's just personal
preference.
Press SPACEBAR on the "OK" button and the setup is complete.
Yay! Let's start listening and finding radio stations.
The Main Window:
The first area on the program window is the list of all stations; over
12000
from across the globe. No non-terrestrial station as of yet, but who
knows.

Navigate this list with the UP and DOWN ARROWS. PRESS ENTER to start
playing.
Volume Control:
TABBING brings you to the volume control. It's independent from the system
volume, which means it will not interfere with the screen reader levels.
Use
Page up/Page DOWN for 20 percent increments. Use LEFT and RIGHT ARROWS for
5

percent increments. And finally, use UP and DOWN ARROWS for 3 percent
increments.
Searches:
Another press of the TAB will bring you to the search area. Simply type a
station name, a genre or even radio call letters and the station list will
be
populated with the results. No need to even press ENTER when done. Press
SHIFT+TAB twice to get back to the modified listing. To get back to the
full

list
of stations, erase the search term.
Those are the main features of Radio Sure and should give you a good base
to

get started. All in all, a nifty little program if you like listening to
online
radio, but are too lazy to go surfing the web to find them all.
As promised, here are the global hotkeys. They make using the program even
sweeter.
. (Shift + Alt + H) toggle hide/show Radio Sure
. (Shift + Alt + Number pad Plus) volume down
. (Shift + Alt + Number pad Minus) volume up
. (Shift + Alt + M) Mute
. (Shift + Alt + P) toggle Play/Stop
. (Shift + Alt + S) Stop
. (Shift + Alt + B) Back
. (Shift + Alt + N) Next
. (Shift + Alt + R) start/stop Recording.

You can use the following link to retrieve the executable file:

Re: [Blind-Computing] Regarding file size and duration

2010-12-08 Thread Dan Mccurley
Hey; sorry I didn't get back to you quicker; I have been messing with this
question for the last couple of days, also; Here's what I have discovered.
I use nero to burn my cds; when burning an audio cd after you have put
together the file that you want to burn, press f7 and do jaws to pc then
when you arrow up nero will tell you the size of the file in terms of
minutes. When burning a data cd, like I said in the other email, you can
put 702 mb on the cd; when you select a file that you want to burn, hit alt
enter, then jaws to pc, arrow up until and nero will tell you how many mb
that file is; all you have to do then is add up the number of mbs you have
when the files and if it is 702 or less, it will all go on the data cd.
After saying all of that let me say that there is much I have to learn about
all of this; I do that the bit of the file has everything to do with the
size of the file; I don't think this will mess you up, though, dealing with
talk files. Let me know if any of this helps.

It appears as you're using Windows XP.
1. Go to c:\documents and settings and look for this music subfolder
within

"My documents."
2. Run a search for a file you are certain is contained within one of
those

folders. When you find it press alt and the enter key to determine the
location of the file. You can now manually seek it out.

Dan, try using the search box & looking for a song name u know.
Alternately, try looking for *.mp3 files.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Shocking: Facebook to Shut Down On March 15

At first I thought this was some kind of practical joke, but it sure
sounds real. Read it and weep:

PALO ALTO, CA -Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down
in March.
Managing the site has become too stressful.
"Facebook has gotten out of control," said Zuckerberg in a press
conference outside his Palo Alto office, "and the stress of managing
this company has ruined my life.
I need to put an end to all the madness."
Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting March 15th, users will no
longer be able to access their Facebook accounts.
"After March 15th the whole website shuts down," said Avrat Humarthi,
Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. "So if you ever want to
see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You
won't be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business."
Zuckerberg said that the decision to shut down Facebook was difficult,
but that he does not think people will be upset.
"I personally don't think it's a big deal," he said in a private phone
interview.
"And to be honest, I think it's for the better. Without Facebook, people
will have to go outside and make real friends. That's always a good
thing."
Some Facebook users were furious upon hearing the shocking news.
"What am I going to do without Facebook?" said Denise Bradshaw, a high
school student from Indiana. "My life revolves around it. I'm on
Facebook at least 10 hours a day.
Now what am I going to do with all that free time?"
However, parents across the country have been experiencing a long
anticipated sense of relief.
"I'm glad the Facebook nightmare is over," said Jon Guttari, a single
parent from Detroit. "Now my teenager's face won't be glued to a
computer screen all day. Maybe I can even have a conversation with her."
Those in the financial circuit are criticizing Zuckerberg for walking
away from a multibillion dollar franchise. Facebook is currently ranked
as one of the wealthiest businesses in the world, with economists
estimating its value at around 7.9 billion.
But Zuckerberg remains unruffled by these accusations. He says he will
stand by his decision to give Facebook the axe.
"I don't care about the money," said Zuckerberg. "I just want my old
life back."
The Facebook Corporation suggests that users remove all of their
personal information from the website before March 15th. After that
date, all photos, notes, links, and videos will be permanently erased.

press windows key plus R, then type "%temp%" and press enter. A folder
will come opened. Now you can delete the files.

Similarly, take run dialog and type "prefetch" and press enter.

or else type "temp" and "%temp%" in the run you will get temp folder

Anna,
Are you trying to find them because you want to look at them or do
you just want to delete them. If you only want to delete them, check
the delete temporary files button and the program will do it for you.
It knows where to find them.

I know you can delete these files safely if they have not been
modified in over a week but I do not know where to find them since
there is no discription button to view them on the disk clean up page.
I am using windows XP home with service pack three.
thanks in advance anna

[Blind-Computing] struggling with macafee;

2011-01-30 Thread Dan Mccurley
I am using xp/home and service pack 3, with jaws 10; Every time I turn my
computer on, macafee wants to scan and my machine boggs along and does all
sorts of crazy things; I'm blaming this on macafee and I hope I'm right; in the
meantime, could someone tell me how to stop this scanning thing. I would
really like to get rid of macafee just to see if it is the problem but I don't
have another protection program on my computer. Thanks for any help.

Hi Dan;

Click on the link below, then click on the 32 bit download & your download
should start. You are running XP Home 32 bit aren't you? Save it to your
harddrive somewhere, that you can access it easily. Don't run it until
you

get Macafee totally uninstalled & removed from your computer. Hope this
helps. Take care.

How useable is Replay a/V with Jaws 12?
I look at the demonstration version and couldn't work it out?
Do you just leave it running and it automatically spots when a streamed
program is underway?

a bit lost?
