Re: [BVARC] Emergency preparness

2024-05-22 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
hey peeps,
For me, the power went out 2 minutes into the storm, the transmission
lines behind my neighborhood took a fatal hit that they are still working
on to rebuild.
I did not get my HT out and I am sorry for that missed opportunity. I had
nothing to report and ended up sitting in a dark house reading a book on
my phone when I could have been chatting with yall assuming the radio
towers had power. next time.

Re: [BVARC] Fw: Changes to the POTA Event

2024-02-05 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
POTA is a Ham radio activity, and just like winter/summer field day and ham
fest should be ham club events. you dont like pota dont come. but why
your opinion against a ham event should stop me from participating and
getting value from the club is beyond selfish. Please sit in you ham shack
all day and issue opinions about those that like to get our and resolve all
the technical issues of setting up a station in a public place.
I am offended by your small minds, but then you are offended by mine so we
are even.
I am sorry the club could not support two people actually providing value
to the club members. oops did I just say that out loud and get
blocked/cancelled?

Just not with the BVARC name. We are going back to the way we did things
when we first started things. It has nothing to do with what the BOD has
said or done. I am only speaking for myself at this time, but I was happy
helping HAMS during POTA. There are many reasons why we are doing the
events without BVARC and we talked about this during WFD. I agree we need
to try to be more professional as operators. That goes for all of us. From

So for everybody watching this email thread. We will give out more info

the best way would be to actually read the licensing page that everyone
skips when they install software. there can be notices not to export in
there.
the CIA publishes guidelines on what level of encryption can be exported.
( they can crack everything else).
I may not be easy, but I would hate to be arrested because my Balloon had
something on it that it should not.

in the 70s the music and video industry tried to prevent piracy by
encrypting their music and movies. they barely got the first CDs out the
door before there was a program free on the internet to crack the
encryption. the military already encrypts their transmissions. we are not
allowed to encrypt but everyone else is. I assume that the television
industry wants to protect their copyrights on streaming channels and that
as soon as it is done there will be a crack for it. definitely not an end
to Ham as we know it.

Happy to be a co conspirator, I have an orange pi 5+ that has ubuntu loaded
to it. that was intended to either fly in an RC aircraft or be a winlink,
and since I do not have the aircraft yet, be happy to workout the winlink
stuff with you. I also have several RPi that may or may not still work. at
least one will be a HF CW repeater in the future.

[BVARC] award question.

2023-06-05 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
i read a comment about jpg qsl cards being emailed not being accepted by
"award" programs,

is there some actual value in an award? I am not a badges kind of person
so I will never seek an award, if I happen to get one then I would not
likely even print it off, for me a JPG QSL card has the maximum value it
could have, and i would print it out and put it on the wall.
If i had a 100 DX QSL cards on my wall it would mean more to me than a
certificate from ARRL stating the same thing.
i understand different strokes, just asking if I am missing anything about
the award systems.

Re: [BVARC] Charging for QSL?

2023-05-18 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
I am a very new ham, I have been reading and listening to this upset for
awhile, which is remarkable given my newness, so I assume it is very
upsetting for many people. I believe that the contests and award agencies
should not require the qrz log confirmation. not everyone has an account
with them if a ham loggs a contact that should be enough and it should be
assumed that there was a QSO. if a ham chooses to falsify a QSO well then
they live with that deceit. maybe if you set up a contest among QRZ or ARRL
members and you want to force them to only talk to each other and require
their log confirmation that would just be a particular contest rule. in
general for things like DXCC or other awards that include the public then
requiring confirmation just causes upset when you have to get more contacts
that the award specifies to account for people that have not logged to a
specific log service.
my $.02 as a know nothing new oinker.

because I an not sure about the steel roofs and powerlines in my yard.

[BVARC] follow up new guy question.

2023-05-15 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
Been a ham 4 month, so far I can regularly hear and TX to illinois, NY,
NJ,NC georgia alabama, missouri and Fla, I occasionally hear california,
cuba mexico, have my antennas been directional to the east coast, are
there just more hams in these areas? are the various metal roofs power
lines and other factors in my yard pointing my TX/RX in that direction,
have I not listened long enough?I hear these people but rarely who they
are talking to. mostly I hear the guys with booming 1.5k boosters. (they
always tell you) are my antennas just not up to the quality yet?
thanks for your thoughts,

Re: [BVARC] Thursday BVARC meeting I am pissed...

2023-04-14 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
I live in the heights. I will not be attending any meetings in stafford at
6 or 7pm on a weekday. it would take me 2 hours to drive that at that
time. If the meeting were at 5 or 530pm i could leave work and go straight
there and it would only be 40min. (I work 1/2 way there). I dont know the
statistics of this club as to how many work and geographical distribution
but maybe work on having meetings at the center at a time when people can
attend. Or just call them names and experss your upset.

[BVARC] targeted dx.

2023-04-11 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
Moring yall.
lets say I wanted to talk to a specific country. what might I customise to
make it more likely.
lets say houston to australia. would there be better frequencies within a
band to try? what might I look up? how to speak ozzi? I have seen my wspr
path get there on 10w and I have seen the propagation charts that let me
know that sunset is the best time. do I need a directional antenna? I
assume there are many basic factors for any radio transmission to be
successful but what are the specific ones if I only wish to contact AUS?

2023-04-10 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
yes that is where the voodoo comes in , it is an inverted v not connected
at the apex and not a v. it is a more like a starwars folding wing with
the connedtion at the mid center bottom. of the delta. It is one of 10 or
so temporary antennas and seems to work about as well as any of them. I
really hope I am learning something.

[BVARC] Antenna voodoo

2023-04-09 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
This morning i took a 40m dipole attached the wire ends with a zip tie. (No
metal to metal connection) And hung it up as a triangle with no measurents
the top was at the top of my mast and the bottom was as high as i could
stand on a chair.. I was lazy and just attached it to my radio checked
swr on 40m to 10m and since 20m was less than 2:1 i hit tune. Made a 59
contact in mississippi. Whats my point??? Well i have read hundreds of
pages about antennas this design is not in any of them and still have no
idea why any of this works.

well not really babes but got you to look.
I volunteered to do ham from my motorcycle for the ms150 and I know some of
yall have done this or at least put radios on your bikes, I have an
antenna that should connect to the license plate holder. and a tyt 8600
that should handle the traffic. do I need to connect the radio directly to
the battery , to a seperate battery or can I use a cigarette type
attachment? I have a handlebar clamp that should hold the radio with luck
will this need reinforcement? do I need to worry about vibration of the
radio? (yes its a harley)

So as a 9yr old at summer camp i decided it would be cool to get a card
from australia, (i figured that was as far as possible before it started
getting closer again).
and 3 months ago I started working on this goal.Last night my computer
talked to Austrailia via WSPR and tonight I will try and do it by phone,
(voice) . Not sure about the card may just print my own if no one will
send me one. took 50 years to accomplish but I will check it off the life
to do list and on to the next. I may start on one of the standards like
all 50 states or 100 countries, they do not mean as much to me as
completing the dream of a 9 year old.

Re: [BVARC] extra exam.

2023-03-21 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
thank you all for your replies, this was humor, and nothing more. I can
not believe that calculating the reactance or inductance of RLC T or Pi
circuits will ever be needed if I never build my own radio. I have spent
many hours learning about antennas, and am happy to let the Japanese learn
RLC and build me a radio. maybe there could be an option on the extra exam
to just send some money to a Japanese engineering student to learn it for
me, and skip all the questions dealing with electronics engineering. for
those literal folks, I have taken 22 practice exams and read through all
the pool questions once. I am learning to pass the test, not how to
operate a radio. I will learn that in time once I get my practical antenna
knowledge down. I am fully aware I do not need to pass the test to talk to
Ausies in Australia, the desire to do so was created as a 9yr old in a ham
shack at camp in upstate NY, (long lake camp).
and I know yall had to walk to school in the snow bare footed up hill both
ways, thank you for doing so, us whimps still have to learn engineering we
will never use, thank god I learned Trigonometry in high school to answer
some of these questions and to calculate the angles on my antenna designs.
and will someone please explain the difference between a current balun,
voltage balun inductive balun an inductor a capacitive inductor and a
balloon?.

If I had wanted to be an electrical engineer and design antennas for NASA I

them" and not considering what questions might actually represent what is
needed to operate a radio. seriously many operators do not know the
phonetic alphabet or at least not the reason to use it. why do I need to
know the reactance of a pi-l circuit for 7.3 Mhz at 1800 somethings on the
surface of the moon in September in an odd solar year standing on one foot
holding an antenna two wavelengths from the surface if there are beetles
moving underneath and I am left handed.

Re: [BVARC] forum

2023-03-14 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
Discord is very discordant, it is not organized, it is just long
threads, a proper forum is organized by topics and sub topics and if you
have a question you do not have to read 600 posts to get an answer.
discord is like trying to get a question answered on twitter or over the
radio.
I will be happy to spend a few hours setting up a bvarc only forum, if it
gets used great if not then not much lost.
Marc.

[BVARC] QSO cards???

2023-02-27 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
Hello BVARC Hammers.
newbie question, with barely my second month under my belt, I was
wondering something.
I have seen all sorts of logging software out there and I suppose some of
it is somehow automatic and listens to something or other.
my question is this, I am working on a webpage www.ki5zho.com and I have
added a QSO link that if you click the log portion it allows you to enter
in your info and will send you an email with my "card" since I am old,
this seemed better than sending a card snail mail. but as I am exposed to
soo many logger programs I wonder if this will ever be used. do people
care about cards any more? is that just a long expired concept? also
should I bother making postcards to send to DX contacts? the world has gone
too digital, I loved the QSO cards on the wall of my summer camp ham shack.
they were windows into the world, and maybe that is gone now.

[BVARC] houston ham radio supply

2023-02-22 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
anyone know if this is an actual business?
https://houstonhamradio.com/about.aspx
their web site is a disaster, I would love to get it up to speed, (for a
fee) if it is a real business. if it is just someones covid work from home
side gig, well then I would still be willing. (same fee).

Bubba, I am too new to know what I am talking about, is 2m (USB)
UpperSideBand, or UniversalSerialPort, the same as just FM simplex at
144MHz?? or do I need a ssb radio at 2m? my SSB radio does not have a 2M

Re: [BVARC] The US Airforce may have shot down an Amateur Radio Pico Balloon over Canada

2023-02-17 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
Im not going to look it all up but I have in the past, a simple man
launched missile from a jeep was $50,000 in the 80's anything from a 40M
jet will be exponentially higher. and some of the missiles carried are over
a million each. the fuel, the time of all involved, and there are many
both in the airforce and in both govts. the research to know where the
balloon is and where it will be when the jet gets there. air traffic
control on both sides. even the guy that has to recheck the plane after it
lands to make sure it is ready to fly again. someone somewhere must have
had the job to know what the balloon was and if it was a weather balloon,
or just someones party balloons before that kind of money gets spent.
that guy ows the govt and the balloon owner a check.

thats it, I threw out an impossible wild idea and you all called my
bluff, i am done reading, I am just going to start wiring things up and
passing current through them and see what happens, wish me luck because
clearly that is how you make an antenna, rub a leprechauns belly and throw
electrons at the rainbow.

[BVARC] its official.

2023-02-16 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
Yes I can now say with certainty that all antenna science is actually just
VooDoo.
after reading 100s of pages on an equal number of antenna configurations I
have determined that the only common denominator is that antennas must be
made from metal. and someone will let me know that is also not so. to sum
up my research you must have a 1/4, 1/2, 5/8, 3/8, 3/4 full wavelength
section at some angle to something else that is larger or smaller than the
original it must be between touching the earth or 200ft high whichever you
like more. it should be horizontal or vertical or an angle in-between.
can be made from wire or tubing of copper or aluminum but do not rule out
magnesium. it must be an open or closed circuit it definitely should or
should not be resonate, SWR is bad, but a little is ok. dont forget to
trim your antenna until you have trimmed too much then add some back and
trim some more. A balun unun unbalunousbulbulous, is absolutely maybe
required but dont use one, they are rings of mystery metal called ferite,
because they may be ferous and may be magic, they should be wound clockwise
or counter clockwise or both and may have 2 but can have as many as six
wires in a mystical configuration that can not be shown in 2 dimensions.
did i mention the magic ladder wire or 75-400 or more ohm coax with or
without loops to make something called ohms all nice and matchy matchy.
(oof course you dont need this either because radios do this for you.)

so there you have it, all you need to know to get out there and make a
perfect antenna.

[BVARC] why not!

2023-02-09 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
I am in the process of researching what a DMR hotspot is good for, I am
planning on reinventing the wheel, yes i know I should not, and I know
there are things I could buy that would be easier.

I have a few raspberry pi 4's (bought before it became impossible to find
one).
I have a cheap SDR usb stick, and I have a 2m antenna that works and is
30ft in the air.

I will be assembling them into an DMR hotspot with talkgroup, (not for any
reason I know other than to see if I can do it).
I am the FNG here but i would love to have people to play with on this
project, and plan to publish the results and the log on www.ki5zho.com. I
assume this has been done before, and there are likely lots of youtube
videos on it. I dont care, I want to do it myself, I am porcine headed that
way.
If you have an interest in following along or contributing please send me
an email
at m...@ki5zho.com
or beachcat...@gmail.com
There will also be some website programming to make ki5zho.com into an
informational site. it is currently only a qso card.

Re: [BVARC] 10-10 Contest this weekend

2023-02-04 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
Allen,
god willing I will pass my general today, receive my radio, and build my
antenna, you will be my first qso maybe. since I am clueless I will start
with a WRC antenna, and then set up a 20m dipole, should a 20m dipole in
some config either inverted, horizontal, or delta upside down or normal
work on 10 meter also locally? I have way too many questions and the more
answers I get the more questions I have.

Re: [BVARC] Radio Merit Badge - Need help for Saturday!

2023-02-02 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
I doubt anyone will be able to take the required class in time, I took one
for girl scouts many years back ( my scout is almost 33 YO). and they only
gave it twice a year.

If they will waive that requirement, I can tell you what is in the class,
NEVER BE ALONE WITH LESS THAN 3 SCOUTS! and or another adult. they spent
all day on a saturday to teach that.

anyway, I do not know enough to teach, unless they want to know how to
build an antenna from junk in your garage.

[BVARC] real deal antenna question.

2023-01-30 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
I am a total noob. (new guy for the older folks).
I ordered an icom 7300 and want to do all the things i can with it but
mostly ARES, and POTA. so of course I am thinking about antennas, I
really like building antennas, however the one I built for 146MHz receives
crystal clear but does not transmit as far as I can see. I do not have a
bunch of money to spend on professional antennas so i would like to make
usable ones on the first try.
I have materials like steel tubing, aluminum tubing, pvc, wire rope
shackles, pullies, and lots of 18ga wire. a welder, knot skills, I am
thinking putting two steel 20' tubes up with guy wires would be easy
enough, maybe even could get them as high as 30ft, and this is great for
10m 20m, but when I start to think of 40m and needing a 65ft dipole, 65ft
in the air, I feel defeated. are these "rules" really just best possible
requirements and putting a 65ft dipole at 30ft will be fine forPOTA, and
maybe even some DX on the right days or nights? I am intending to build
out my "shack" in an RV because I have some Gypsy blood somewhere way back.
otherwise I would just build two 70ft towers in my back yard. I will
assume that 80m is not really a mobile band, and I would only attempt it if
I was really bored and living in the desert. I did order an antenna from
a website that builds ground radial vertical antennas, for 10-80m, I
assume this will work in the USA. and maybe an occasional DX on the
perfect days, Obviously I have been reading too many internet sites and
my information may be very flawed so I am asking yall as I know you know
the truth.

what is the absolute minimum I need to run some 10,20,40M dipoles in a
park. how high? do I need an analyser? good swr meter? some proper 1:1
baluns? dummy load? other?

I know I should have gone to the field meet.

Re: [BVARC] 2m VERTICAL USB

2023-01-27 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
new guy, If I tune my 2 band pos radio to 144.270 on thursday, should I be
able to hear yall, or do I need a USB button on my radio? and if I plug in
my SDR and listen should I be able to get USB? the software has the button
even if the SDR dongle may not. I may invest in a better SDR since they
are much cheaper than real radios and I am thrifty, not cheap.

Everyone is allowed to listen of course, however I looked it up yesterday
and Marine radio is exclusively for boats, it is illegal for land based
operators to use them.
My first experience with an SDR was to listen to the barge director on
144.??? in the ship channel, I am at 290 and 610 so they have a good
antenna.

[BVARC] Thank you.

2023-01-16 Thread M Reiter via BVARC
Thank you all, I am having a blast learning new things, I really enjoyed
working at the marathon this weekend for my first ever radio experience, (
well other than operating a radio in the USMC as a Mortar spotter, plotter).
I have created accounts at radioID brandmeister QRZ registered ni5zho.com
and maybe some others I dont know how to use any of this but I hope to
soon.

I am establishing a home radio, I built the antenna and got is hoisted up a
pole, and still need to figure out all the buttons. What I really need
is some frequencies or repeaters to connect to so that I dont just get dead
air all the time. I have all the data from repeaterbook.com for houston
but I have no idea which are actually monitored or if I am talking to
someones cat. when can I likely receive and send during the week after
1700?

Marc, the Newbie soon to be elmer ;) 73 KI5ZHO
