Just adding something else. Before the lab try to do all requirements for
H323, CUCME, qos from your head for time drills test. If you need to check
something do it with the admin guides only.

Congrats Cory. Now what's next CCDE?

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Passed!!!!!

2013-01-24 Thread Cory Gray
Some Questions I just got

1. Any tips on using configurations in notepad or direct typing into
router without using tab.

I create 4 notepads for every exam

Info.txt - Any information such as IPs, VLAN numbers, login information etc
for each site.

SiteA.txt - Dialplan for Site A

SiteB.txt - Dialplan for Site B

SiteC.txt - Dialplan for Site C

If a site is H323 I do the entire dialplan in the text file and then copy
and paste it to the router. I can then just edit my notepad as needed. If
I have 2 H323 sites, I copy one dial plan configuration to the other and
change what I need to change.

I always use notepad for my SCCP media resources configuration. I grab the
template from the documentation website, edit it, apply it to a site, change
what needs to be changes for next site, apply it, and do it for the third.
This is my first lab that I registered Conference, Transcoder, and MTP all
at the same time before I even had gateways configured. This is just in
case I needed one and did not realize it and I could do it fairly quickly
and never have to worry about it for the rest of the day. You SHOULD not
loose point for extra configuration as long as it does not affect something
else (be careful!). I do a lot of things in every lab that I have never
used before so I can get into a routine that was bullet proof against ANY
future scenario. For me, it is a waste of time to read through the lab. I
have templates but I never read ahead I just always prepare for the unknown.
I even configure things in CUCM out of habit that I never used because they
are not on my lab. I just would not apply them.

Does routing dial plan table is right strategy for lab.

This is a VERY personal question on how to do it but I do not believe you
cannot get through the dial plan quick enough without notes. In one of my
earlier attempts when I was not ready, it took me 2 hours! I did not take
notes! This is what I do.

Pretend these are your requirements for a fictional US dialplan

9 outside code

Plan and type whatever

Emergency - 911 with 4 digit caller id

Local - 7 digits with 7 digit caller id

LD - 11 digits with 10 digit caller id

International - any digits with + caller id

This is what my text file would look like

EMER Calling - 4

EMER Called - 911 unk unk

LOCAL calling - 7

LOCAL called - 9.7 sub isdn

LD Calling - 10

LD Called - 9.1+10

INTL calling - E164

INTL called - T

What was the monitor size in RTP.?

Not sure. Big enough that you can see your GUI pages FULL SCREEN and still
see your notepad right beside it

Can you share how useful OWLE books and Troubleshooting class might help me
in preperation of my voice lab.

I do not think the lab is passable without OWLE books. People passed
without TSHOOT class but I would not have.

All,

I finally passed my CCIE Voice in RTP yesterday. I have an R&S so I am
still #22842. My two cents are below. Take them or leave them. Please
limit direct questions and post them to the alias so everyone can benefit.
Please do not ask me anything that would be in violation of the
Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). I am a Cisco Employee so that increases
your chances of being reported J

Observations

It is not obvious which task depend on each so you have to think about how a
lot of task may affect others. The Voice lab is very "wordy." IPexpert's
practice labs are very clear and concise in their requirements. It is very
easy to get lost in the words due to time pressure and how we read. My
guess is if English is your first language you will skip words and if
English is not, it will be harder to interpret than it is for native
speakers. That is just a case. Yesterday, I read a task that said "should"
and I thought it said "should not." If it was not for a later task that
conflicted with "should not," I would have never noticed and would have
lost the points (assuming I still did not lose the pointsJ ).

So this lab I focused on attention to detail. I read slower and took more
time so I was only finished with about 1hour and 15 minutes left. Some
requirements may not be clear to you so making an assumption is the worst
thing you can do. Seek clarity from the proctor. We all know it is hard to
ask the question in the right way so they can answer but it is better than
assuming. My strategy was to mark down the questions I have and then bring
the proctor over to my desk and ask him every question in one sitting to
save time. That worked. We had our debates about "clarifying" questions
but this saved me a huge amount of time doing all of my questions at the
same time. One of my questions was even answered further in

but this saved me a huge amount of time doing all of my questions at the
same time. One of my questions was even answered further in the lab based
on what another task asked.

For the rest of the time I went back through my lab. The only thing I do
not verify first time through is the dial plan. This is my first time
making it to the end without leaving any points on the table so I had enough
time to verify my dial plan. I figured there is no way every test call
could work 100% without me testing anything but 911. I was right. I fixed
a lot of silly mistakes.

IPexpert Training Notes

You need the 5-lab handbook and the 4 labs you get from the One Week Lab
Experience. I have 3 more labs from the previous round of OWLE and those
helped as well. I hope IPexpert finds a way to include those questions that
require you to think outside the box or features that no one uses in the
real world in their materials. The proctor told us during one lab there are
several tracks per CCIE Lab. There is a 30% change between each lab in the
same track. So let's say there are 4 voice tracks and 4 labs per track
(just using round numbers). Even if you get Track 3 Lab 1 and then get
Track 3 Lab2, you can still easily fail. That can be a big 30%. The point
is every practice question is important so the more questions you have the
better.

I have had scenarios that I could not get working during past labs but there
was never one scenario where I said, "I have no idea how to do this."
IPexpert will give you all of the technical skills to pass but unfortunately
that may not enough. With all of the words and all of the assumptions they
expect you to make, there is no good way I can think of to prepare for that.
Especially with integrated troubleshooting. You may think of things they do
that make sure phones not get DHCP but there are things that will not break
your configuration that you still have to spot and fix. After taking the
lab many times, you start to understand what are some of these things to
look for and you making check those things part of your routine.

The new Troubleshooting course is essential. Seeing the debugs in the
IPexpert practice labs is nowhere as good as having Vik walk you through it.
I can now easily read h323, SIP, and mgcp traces thanks to that class.

Other Notes

I heard in the past people could skip sections like CUCCX, QoS, and/or
Troubleshooting and still pass. I do not believe that is possible anymore
if it ever was in the past. Assume the worst that every questions is worth
5 points. That means you can only miss 4 questions. There is always stuff
that you think you configured right that you really did not so you cannot
leave ANY points on the table. You have to leave thinking you got 90+
points to have a chance in passing.

I am done ranting.

Let me (and the list) know if you have any questions,

Cory

How I Studied
It took me three attempts to pass the CCIE, and after each of my failed
attempts I made a number of adjustments to my approach. This was all personal
study, I did not take any classes, but I did get some great support from my
employer paying for materials, rack rentals, exam fees, allowing me some study
leave and being very encouraging and supportive throughout.

Attempt One (March)
For attempt one I used the Cisco 360 materials. Of these the lab workbooks
were very good and the online racks were the best I’ve seen in terms of setup
(mainly because they’re the only ones I’ve seen with a remote phone control
solution that actually works even remotely well). The other materials, a
‘library’ which seemed to consist of docs mostly available for free elsewhere
and some videos which were ‘presented’ by a synthesized voice, were very poor.
However there were only racks available for the last 10 of the 25 labs (the
first 15 being technology labs like IPexpert WB 1) and it didn’t seem possible
to purchase additional rentals. There were also 5 assessed labs – I really
liked the idea of these and they did help, although they were graded by a
script that sometimes went wrong. In fairness their support was good and they
did give me extra sessions when things went wrong.
My biggest criticism of the 360 stuff only came after my first attempt. I
arrived in the exam room to find the exam looked nothing like the 360 labs. So
where the 360 stuff had tables the exam had prose. The technology demands of
the lab were very different from that of the 360 labs and there were quite a
few things missing. Having been practicing with one set of workbooks I’d also
become accustomed to a particular naming standard and IP schema as was
surprised how much this threw me. I also suffered from the unfamiliar US
keyboard layout and spent a considerable period of time correcting typing
errors. Needless to say I ran out of time and failed.
I took time at the end of the exam, having realized I failed, to reread the
paper, and took good notes after leaving the room to ensure I would learn all
the things that threw me.

Attempt Two (June)
After attempt one I purchased the IPExpert WB2 and 5-lab workbook and worked
through them. I was struck by how much closer to the real thing they were,
especially the 5 lab book. I also purchased two US keyboards (one for work one
for home).
I didn’t get on with the Proctorlabs remote phone control, so bought an 877
router, an old switch and a few phones (7960) – I also managed to borrow 4 7965
phones. I found this worked well for me and kept this hardware setup frpom
this point in.
I also collected together a list of things that I felt I needed to know from
memory, such as various URLs, page numbers in the SRNDs etc. and committed
these to memory.
I went through two workbooks just once – although I read and took notes on
each scenario a couple of times to practice understanding and interpreting the
questions. In the end I was completing the 5-lab scenarios in a little over 6
hours. I felt confident, I’d have perhaps liked a little longer to prepare but
had booked a date months in advance to make sure I committed.
This attempt went much better, and I felt I knew the technology much better.
However I still ran out of time and did not finish the exam. I was left with
the distinct impression that whilst the 5-lab workbook is a good reflection of
the exam the scenarios are much shorter than the real thing .

Attempt Three (September)
This time I decided that I knew the technology sufficiently well, and that the
main problem was speed. I decided to practice only the 5 lab workbooks, but
went through and added several questions to each. These were a mix of
questions from WB2 and questions based on my memories of my two failed attempts
(no excuse for getting the same thing wrong twice!).
I adopted several strategies to improve my speed, including

  * · Used an online typing tutor (http://www.sense-lang.org/) to
improve my typing speed and familiarity with US keyboard
  * · Added to my list of ‘things to memorise’ and loaded these into
a flashcard program (Anki http://ankisrs.net/) which I also loaded onto my
smartphone (AnkiDroid)

[OSL | CCIE_Voice] Passed on Monday - Part II

2012-09-23 Thread Kevin Spicer
As promised, part II of my account...

*My approach to the lab*

This is an account of my general lab approach that I practiced and an
account of any of my real lab attempts.

I’ve seen a number of approaches advocated. I considered the ‘device
approach’ and Kevin Wallace’s modified device approach, but it didn’t work
for me (I tend to think better when focusing on one technology at a time). A
lot of workbooks necessarily adopt a top-down approach, but this leads you
to waste a lot of time backtracking and revisiting devices in CUCM. Ultimately
I settled on a dependency driven approach, where I performed a basic
configuration at the start and then addressed questions in an order that
made sense according to the dependencies.

For me the key was the first half-hour of the lab, and taking the
appropriate notes. Below I detail first how I extracted information and
organized my notes and secondly the order in which I tackled the questions.

*Note taking*

Each side of the two sheets of paper allowed was populated on first read
through of the paper and organized as follows.

*Sheet 1 Side 1 – Portrait orientation*

As I read through the paper I made a list of the question numbers, the
points and a one or two word description down the left hand side of this
page. e.g.

1.1 (3) Vlan

1.2 (2) CUCM DHCP

As I tend to jump around this provided my a quick table of contents, a
checklist where I could cross off questions as I completed them, a list of
the scores so when I left questions unfinished due to an issue I could
prioritize coming back to those that attracted greater scores.

The right hand side of the page was used for any notes about questions I
needed to revisit, or had completed but not checked.

*Sheet 1 Side 2 – Portrait orientation*

This sheet I used for dial-plan. I used two horizontal lines to spilt it
into three sections A,B,C and each section had five columns

1 Call type ( 1 letter
E=Emergency,L=Local,N=National,I=International,T=TEHO etc.)

2 Pattern (911 / 9[2-9]XX etc.)

3 Route (LRG / A/B/C /GK etc. for patterns with failover it would
split to two lines here)

4 DNIS – a number of digits and if required type / plan (e.g.
3u/u 7i/s
10i/n)

5 ANI - a number of digits and if required type / plan (e.g. 3u/u 7i/s
10i/n)

*Sheet 2 Side 1 – Landscape orientation*

I divided this page into three columns – one for each site. Then added a
horizontal line about 2cm from the bottom. These three sections at the
bottom of the page would contain notes about the gateway, e.g. ‘T1 8 MGCP
top name OR’ = ‘T1 8 channels MGCP, channel selection order top down, send
calling name & outgoing redirecting number’

I’d add a margin to the top section of the columns, to contain notes
relevant to device pool and other shared structures. e.g. ‘EST -5 24 m/d/y
SRST s/p’ = “Eastern Standard Time UTC- 5 hours, 24 hour time format,
mm/dd/ date format, SRST enabled, Sub-pub callmanager group’

The right hand side of each column would be subdivided into a row for each
phone on the site. Within this each box had line / button info on the
right, device info on the left and user info at the bottom. e.g.

Priv-off 2001

IPPM +1202555

  (2) 2002

  (3) BLF 3001

   (5) IPPA-L

gwashington

AGENT / CUPC CTI

Would mean the phone has privacy turned off and is subscribed to the IP
Phone Messgenger and IP Phone Agent single button login (on button 5), with
the number 2001 and external mask +1202555. Button 2 is shared line
2002, button 3 is a Busy lamp speed dial to 3001. The user is gwashington
and is configured as a UCCX Agent and a CUPC deskphone control user.

*Sheet 2 Side 2 – portrait orientation*

This sheet is divided into three columns

Column 1 – the order to configure things to get the basic configuration
working (see below).

Column 2 – subdivided into five sections:

   - · Enterprise parameters (no.722, fix URLs etc.)
   - · Service Parameters (Intraregion codec 729, stop routing on
out of bandwidth-false, AAR-enabled, MVA enabled, call forward timer,
etc. – of course I’d use abbrevations!)
   - · IP Phone Services (IPPM, IPPA-Login etc.)
   - · Phone Templates, e.g. LL..S. for 2 lines and a service URL
   on line 5
   - · Softkeys (mobility etc.)

Column 3 - subdivided into three sections:

   - · Partitions (give these short codified names such as R_A -
meaning site A route PSTN, X_A_clg_in – meaning transformation patterns
   site A calling number inbound)
   - · Calling Search Spaces (again short names A – site A phones,
B1, B2 – where two phones havedifferent CSS etc.)
   - · Media devices to create, and number of sessions (e.g. aaaxcd
   4 / bbbcfb 2)

I went through two workbooks just once – although I read and took notes on
each scenario a couple of times to practice understanding and interpreting
the questions. In the end I was completing the 5-lab scenarios in a little
over 6 hours. I felt confident, I’d have perhaps liked a little longer to
prepare but had booked a date months in advance to make sure I committed.

This attempt went much better, and I felt I knew the technology much better.
However I still ran out of time and did not finish the exam. I was left
with the distinct impression that whilst the 5-lab workbook is a good
reflection of the exam the scenarios are much shorter than the real thing .

*Attempt Three (September)*

This time I decided that I knew the technology sufficiently well, and that
the main problem was speed. I decided to practice only the 5 lab
workbooks, but went through and added several questions to each. These
were a mix of questions from WB2 and questions based on my memories of my
two failed attempts (no excuse for getting the same thing wrong twice!).

I adopted several strategies to improve my speed, including

   - · Used an online typing tutor (http://www.sense-lang.org/) to
improve my typing speed and familiarity with US keyboard
   - · Added to my list of ‘things to memorise’ and loaded these
into a flashcard program (Anki http://ankisrs.net/) which I also loaded
   onto my smartphone (AnkiDroid)
   - · Created a number of ‘recipes’ for common configurations
(Router Qos, T1/E1, MGCP/H.323, media devices, CME, SRST etc.) and tuned

November 2011: Passed CCIE written.

I spent the remainder of November researching vendors for IE training and
allocating materials to complete my at home lab. Thank you IPexpert and EBAY.
I began the Audio and Video on demand series of the product in December and
finished it in about 3 weeks. After that i began to go through the Volume 1
labs. My study time consisted of 2.5 - 3.5 hours each night, M-F and then 10
to 12 hrs a day on Saturday and Sunday. And YES this is the actual amount of
time that i studied. I gave up TV, and fishingahhh i can go fishing again,
for the entirety while i studied. I went on like this through Volume 1 labs
and then i went onto the most recent 5 labs. I knew that these were the most
recent so i started with the 5 labs and then went back to the Volume 2 labs.
In the beginning rounds of the 5 labs and Volume 2 labs i would go through a
lab from M-F and then again on Saturday and Sunday. This would allow me to do
a full lab 3 times per week. By the time Sunday finished
i would have a pretty good understanding of the topics that i had completed in
that lab that week. However, in the beginning months I still couldn't finish
the labs in 8 hours even on the Sunday attempts. I would also like to state
that I would go through the Video on demand lab explanation and the written
versions from the very beginning of the week. I saved a lot of time by giving
into the fact, that i was no where near an expert and it was time for me to
learn not test. Thus i used all the assets that i could to make sure i knew
and understood a topic before i attempted them. I continued my studies like
this until I had been through all but about 3 or 4 labs a couple times each.
This was about the June time frame, so i went ahead and booked my two , week
long bootcamps at SJC. I went to SJC for the classes in July of this year.
After returning home from the classes, I had two weeks to really put what i had
learnt to the grindstone and make sure i knew the tech. fla
t out. By this time i could complete the IPexpert labs in about 5 to 6 hours.
I would take lunch breaks and small breaks from time to time but i really
focused on strategy more than anything. My strategy for the most part
consisted of : Gateways to include everything but srst and some mgcp
registrations. That would be followed by CUCM configuration, i worked from the
menu on the left and tried to hit everything that i could on my way through the
menus on the right. I must say here that, this is something that you can
really sharpen in the OWLE, Vik has what I believe the best approach to the
Lab. It worked for me anyhow. Haven already auto registered my phones , and
my complete device pools, i would then go through and setup all of the phones
to their final config or as final as possible anyhow. I think that it really
saves a lot of time to go through and touch these phone configs pages as little
as possible. And of course you get to this ability with hours and hour
s of practice. Following that i did my QOS configs for WAN and Campus. From
here it kinda seemed like a seat of the pants kind of a feeling. Some tasks
required others to be in place first. So every lab differed in the tasks
completed from that point. So finally lab day... Beginning of August.

I arrived at 6:30 am having slept very little the night before, my nerves
really got the best of me. At 7 am the proctor brought us in and gave us the
run down.. "here's the bathroom, here's the food, run this way in case of fire,
on your mark get set go!" So i sat down and began to go through my normal
paces. Very shortly in i realized that i was very nervous and was watching the
clock as if it were getting ready to helicopter off the wall. But i buckled
down and tried to stick to my guns as best as possible. After lunch I had an
inclination that i would be best served to slow down and take in as much as
possible for my next go round. So i tried my best to complete what i could and
not introduce any more troubleshooting requirements than were already there.
After the day was done, i left licking my wounds with a few tasks having never
even been touched. Ok time to go home and regroup. I tried to remember as
much as i could on the way home and then i proceeded to la
b those items i had issues with while they were fresh on my mind. I then took
a two week break and didn't even look at the Cisco website. Upon returning to
my lab after two weeks i found that i was very rusty, but it turned out to be a
good thing. I had forgotten some of my bad habits and had to re-look at some
tasks to make sure I was configuring them correctly. This allowed me to learn
even more and

hello guys,

My 2 year journey just came to an end. I took my 3rd attempt yesterday in
San Jose and i just got my score 5 mins ago with good news
I'm CCIE # 29606
It was long hours of study time and lab time
I couldn't afford a home lab so all i did is rent equipment from Proctorlabs
i was able to get physical phones to test. which was pretty good

my strategy was a bit different from what people usually recommend

I started with Infrastructure of course
switch config all that needed to be done in the switch including QoS, so i
could forget about that device
then i moved to HQ, SiteB and SiteC NTP, vlans, and then QoS right away
after that i started working on CUE (because i know it takes long time)
then i moved to PRI configs
then i started working on configuring my phones, basic config
then i moved over to VM, then UCCX, then all the features requested
and at the end i did call routing

something that actually helped me out a lot to improve my speed was
i created my configs in notepad and i called those my templates, so during
the week i didn't have access to any rack rental sessions so i was
practicing in notepad

i did the workbooks 1 and 2 only once then i was using the rack rental
sessions to practice pretty heavily on a tech basis everthing from inside
out and every once in a while start adding more technologies

that was my experience i didn't know how to approach this beast at the
beginning I was reading all the documentation all the pdf's and books and i
was getting bored
so i dediced to read all the documentation, pdf's and books on a technology
basis i printed a calendar and with the blue print on the other hand i
marked which days i was going to spend studying X item on the blue print so
by the time it was the weekend i could practice that in my lab sessions
during the weekend and get as much as i could from the rack rental sessions

thank you very much for all your support and also for my study partners from
all over the world
I'll try to help you to get your number as well, you guys helped me, i'm
going to try to do the same

have a great day !

hello guys,

My 2 year journey just came to an end. I took my 3rd attempt yesterday in San

I'm CCIE # 29606
It was long hours of study time and lab time
I couldn't afford a home lab so all i did is rent equipment from Proctorlabs i
was able to get physical phones to test. which was pretty good

my strategy was a bit different from what people usually recommend

I started with Infrastructure of course
switch config all that needed to be done in the switch including QoS, so i
could forget about that device
then i moved to HQ, SiteB and SiteC NTP, vlans, and then QoS right away after
that i started working on CUE (because i know it takes long time)
then i moved to PRI configs
then i started working on configuring my phones, basic config
then i moved over to VM, then UCCX, then all the features requested
and at the end i did call routing

something that actually helped me out a lot to improve my speed was
i created my configs in notepad and i called those my templates, so during the
week i didn't have access to any rack rental sessions so i was practicing in
notepad

i did the workbooks 1 and 2 only once then i was using the rack rental sessions
to practice pretty heavily on a tech basis everthing from inside out and every
once in a while start adding more technologies

that was my experience i didn't know how to approach this beast at the
beginning I was reading all the documentation all the pdf's and books and i was
getting bored
so i dediced to read all the documentation, pdf's and books on a technology
basis i printed a calendar and with the blue print on the other hand i marked
which days i was going to spend studying X item on the blue print so by the
time it was the weekend i could practice that in my lab sessions during the
weekend and get as much as i could from the rack rental sessions

thank you very much for all your support and also for my study partners from
all over the world
I'll try to help you to get your number as well, you guys helped me, i'm going
to try to do the same

have a great day !

hello guys,

My 2 year journey just came to an end.

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Passed

2011-06-29 Thread George Goglidze
Thanks a lot guys,

Jeff, I'm not sure how much I can say regarding this, but it wasn't a
hardware failure, and I sat the whole exam, and got the free voucher only
after opening a ticket through certsupport community.
I don't know if I can say exactly what the problem was, so you have to
excuse me for not telling it.

Roger, bacon sundae forever man, we have to repeat that one day :-)

Mini Me: I didn't have any special method, just few things, I saved a lot
time by first writing down in notepad the call routing plan, something like
this:

hq (sub=yes or no, nat=yes or no, int=yes or no) 1,011 = yes or no, 911 -
unk/unk or whatever else is asked.
number gw name
ani type/plan dnis type/plan
to

local 9[2-9]hq yes
Xd ?/? Xd
?/? Xd
  br1
yes Xd ?/? Xd
?/?Xd
-
nat 91

and like this for every site. This way you don't have to reread the question
million times, just once, and you have it all.

The rest of my strategy was I guess the usual, get QoS after infrastructure,
bring up and upgrade license of CUE after infrastructure too.
Did UCCX last, because it's the slowest task, you need longer time to finish
this.

The rest of things, step by step.

I hope this helps someone,

Regards,

George,

Congrats!

Can you answer this without violating the NDA since a HW failure isn't
probably test material? What kind of HW failure has to happen for them to
give you a free retake?Do they let you finish that attempt and say "use
the voucher if you fail" or was your attempt halted immediately? How far
into the exam were you when it occurred?

After two events like that I'd start to get really frustrated - did you go
back immediately or take long breaks? If there are travel costs involved
I'd start to get really upset with Cisco and I'd want to almost stay in town
and take it the next day if there were spots open.

Curious - but don't break the NDA answering my questions :)
