The US is moving backward in internet usage. In Europe 15MB/s

Belgium is the wrong example, the internet market there is strangled by the
incumbents who may be offering a high speed connection (20 Mbit/s), but make
you pay $100 per month for that and give you a 35 GB traffic limit. In the
Netherlands on the other hand a 20 Mbit/s DSL line will cost you $30 without
any data limits.

Maybe I miss it but I don't see the major ISPs in Europe going out of
business offering flat rate unlimited bandwidth with video streaming

They are. The only ISPs that are surviving are vertically integrated with
telco's. The independent ISP is dead in Europe.

In fact the P2P problem might be worse since in some countries it's legal!

P2P as a technology is just as legal in the US as it is in the EU.

If you are referring to copyright legislation the EU is different from the US
in that in most countries copyright legislation does not discriminate against
certain technical methods. Hence making sure that all license fees are paid is
the responsibility of the sender of the information, not of the recipient. Just
like with radio: the station pays the copyright holder, not the listener.
This basically translated to downloading good, uploading bad and if you know
how to to download without uploading you are staying within the boundaries of
the law. I 'fixed' my software and legally all I have to worry about is to wipe
the downloaded files of my notebook before I travel :)

What is your preferred naming convention for emails addresses?

Right now my company is pretty small - there will be 4 of us as of Feb 1.
Currently I use [EMAIL PROTECTED] as our convention, but as my
company grows that may present a problem. The new guy starting on the 1st
has a common name, and I have another hire lined up in August with the same
first name. Which is the preferred Firstname.Lastname@, FirstnameInitial@,
or [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks,

Re: Yup, Tom Cruise Is Insane

2008-01-18 Thread Cameron Childress
I'd like to think not. I think alot of people fall under the influence
of brainwashing mostly because they are weakened somehow physically,
emotionally, financially, and are more susceptible in that state than
others. Alot of cults weaken people and break them down by making them
give up possessions and they also tend to prey on people who are already
in a weakened state emotionally maybe because of something traumatic
that's happened to them or perhaps because they are a bit of an outcast
socially.

Once someone's weakened the cult can then build them back up and help
them overcome whatever it was that was their weakness in the first
place. The help may be real help, but obviously there are strings
attached to the help, plus you feel indebted to the helper, or perhaps
develop a mentor or parent mentality who the person who helped you.
Suddenly that person has influence over your actions and can deepen that
influence if done right. Once they are indoctrinated then they can
serve to bring additional people into the fold.

I think many people, in the right circumstances, could be broken in this
way. People are more vulnerable after losing a loved one or after a
traumatic event like a car crash or even a natural disaster like
Katrina. Even people who would not have otherwise been susceptible
become vulnerable at that point. That's really where having a good
support network of trusted friends and family come into the picture, but
not everyone has that...

I don't think I would ever be vulnerable to something like that, but
it's amazing what can happen to the human mind given the right
circumstances.

the world's largest Internet market.

Chinese internet stocks listed in the United States and elsewhere soared in
2007 has the market continued to grow at massive rates. Notably though most
Chinese access the internet via internet cafe's, although home or business

A colleague of mine assigns private IP addresses to his machines based on
atomic weight. He then names the machines the same. Clever, but hardly
descriptive, for the most part.

It always bugged me that even when they named the servers with 2,
3 appended, they never made it truly logical, and made server1. It
was always server, then server2. Why?

server, because it is designated at all, implies at least 1 in this case?

And they never made a server0 (which is where all lists should start.)

I guess I find the Scientology brain wash thing fascinating. How the
feck is it possible for ANY normal person to hear all this Xenu
bullshit and think it's anything other than a bad story from a
normally decent author? I mean volcanos with nuclear bombs?
 Seriously? And you're saluting HIM??

Remember: they don't say that. In fact they litigate aggressively to
eliminate any mention of that.

Only high-level members of the church, Clears are given that information
and by that time they'll essentially believe anything. To be honest despite
its modern sci-fi wrappings the stories of Scientology aren't any more or
illogical than the stories in most religions. I mean what's more
believable: that space plans the size of DC-10's carried a billion dead
alisn to Earth or that a guy built a boat that carried two of every animal
and thus saved everything from a world-wide flood?

Scientology is like any religion but also features many aspects of a cult.

They approach people on their terms: do you have problems? We can help! Do
you not understand why you're sometimes sad? We can help! Do you feel that
there must be something more? We can help!

They provide escape from uncomfortable reality and authority. Want to let
go of traumatic events? Feel depressed? Need to lose weight? Your doctors
mean well, but they're wrong: we can help!

They (and I think this is a big reason for their success in Hollywood)
provide alleviation of guilt. Don't understand why you have so much when
others have so little? Don't understand why you're so often unhappy when
you've so successful? Want to know how you can help others without
actually, you know, seeing or touching them? We can help!

There's also a huge amount of stroking going on. Do you want to live up to
your potential? Do you know that you can do more, faster, better? Do you
want others to tell you how smart you think you are? We can help!

Scientology caters obviously to the wealthy and those with disposable
incomes. Advancing in Scientology generally means taking courses (at a
cost) and advancing very much like you would in a correspondence course.
This directed aspect of study is attractive to some people: there's no real
mystery and no real chance that you can fail since everything is laid out.

The church bills all this as counseling, and it's often much cheaper overall
than the psychologists many of the targets are used to paying. It's no
wonder that a fundamental tenant of the church is that psychiatry and
psychology are evil: they don't want the competition.

For years scientologists see absolutely nothing about Xenu, the volcanoes or
alien ghosts. Instead they get smart sounding babble about engrams and
clears. They call their practices technology and actually use
impressive looking machines to audit their members health. For much of
the early part the practices are essentially completely secular.

Like any good cult they eventually provide a warehouse of secrets to their
members. A secret language, secret concepts and terms which make it more
and more difficult for the member to talk comfortably to non-scientologists.
This can be see at a less damaging in almost any field: computer geeks find
it easier to talk to computer geeks, horse nuts like talking to other horse
nuts, etc.

Once people begin to describe themselves using church terms it's very hard
to come back. It's self-reinforcing.

In short scientology grabs people like all religions: start out focusing on
the person, on their problems and needs. Provide promise of an answer.
Start slow and gradually shift that focus to the organization and the group.

Catch people at the right time and work slowly and you can essentially do
anything no matter how smart or skeptical they may normally be.

I use first initial, last name sometimes I use the middle initial.
Personally, as you all know, I use elwalker ..

That's been the standard for every company I've worked with.

There will always be conflicts... I'm jdavis at my company but there are
19 others as well (jdavis1, jdavis2, etc). (There are something 90,000
addresses to that domain... there's bound to be duplicates no matter what
system you use).

Some use middle initial to differentiate, others use middle names.

I would also suggest standardizing this across usages. Email address should
also be network logon for example. My company does this but isn't quite
there (I'm jdavis in email but jwdavis on the network). We also use an
arbitrary employee number for single sign-on to corporate resources.

I've got a file of dozens of systems, each using one of several IDs
(network, employee ID, SSN, etc). Simplify this while you're small and
stick to it! ;^)

dangle halfway down his back. Then there's the black leather biker

The 26-year-old does not renounce his father, al Qaeda leader Osama

there is better way to defend Islam than militancy: Omar wants to be

2008-01-18 Thread Robert Munn
The best thought-out server naming conventions I have seen use a coding
system designed to tell you where the server is physically located and what
it's role is, e.g.

cbd25hris001

makes it weird to read at first, but once you know the coding system you can
get a lot of useful information out of it.

On Jan 18, 2008 8:17 AM, Jerry J wrote:

I've worked at places where the servers were named after planets in
sci-fi literature, named after submarines, named after famous physics
scientists. Mostly, though, they were generically named server,
 server2.

It always bugged me that even when they named the servers with 2,
3 appended, they never made it truly logical, and made server1. It
was always server, then server2. Why?

And they never made a server0 (which is where all lists should start.)

Um, no. Are you being serious? Cause if so, my point was that crazy
people who aren't independently wealth are limited in their behavior
by their income. For example, you can't buy a house, poop all over
the floor for a month and then abandon it only to get a new house to
soil. Rich people can.

The point being that commit someone you have to meet a burden of proof
that they can't care for themselves or are a danger to others. The
former is much harder to prove with a rich person than a poor person.
That's why rich people are termed eccentric.

interesting. Yes, they do moderate all email. THis is apparent from the
delay and from the fact that some items (posted on multiple lists) show up
much later on the the albuquerque list. Personally, my take is, it is kinda
nice but more work than just slining everything in a bag and taking to to a
drop-off point and the thing about the format quibbles just makes it too
much trouble to bother with

It's almost the same behaviour my greyhound exhibited from time to time. He

something entirely different.

light and shadow... and my crazy a$$ dog...

2008-01-18 Thread morchella
so my dog Lucy is starting to become a little more neurotic...
if a reflection of natural light moves in the room it spooks her.
she will run around for minutes trying to figure out if it aware...or
what ever..
if i walk by a light and cast a shadow, she does the same thing. as if
it is some thing brand new un-natural.

this has only started happening over the last few weeks or so.
we have had her for about 2 years now...

perhaps i shouldnt have played laser chase with her, but that was only
a few times several months ago.

any way. little afraid she may jump through a window if a passing car
throws a reflection into the house..
any one have any experience with this?

Re: Freecycle

Yeah, I see a lot of groups doing that. What a pain! I'm not requiring it.
Can't be asked. We do just fine the way we are.
I rarely send messages back (2-3 a month), I just edit them myself. And send
reminders to the whole list. Very rarely do the members not eventually get
it. Knock on wood, they seem to be a great bunch. :)

Lot of people cant be bothered with the trouble of selling things. I know I
can't for the most part.

I'd rather just give it away to someone who can't afford it or would be
thrilled to have it. Of course I'd not give away a boat, car, house, or
anything worth thousands ... though it does happen on our list.

In the past year we've had several cars, an RV and a couple of boats given
away.

A quick scholar.google.com search reveals one study that estimates
that approximately 3.3% of the general population belongs to a
pathological dissociative taxon - so yes, it's fairly rare.

I think that the general consensus that most people with DD have had a
history of extreme abuse. I don't know that there have ever been any
allegations of abuse for her. She seems more like she falls in the
realm of a personality disorder.

Larry might have some more insight on this, since he seems to have

I haven't been paying attention really.

You gotta love freecycle, you really do ...

Someone just offered a 52 Sony that still works great. They upgraded to a
flat panel TV, so didnt need the old style anymore.

Someone out there in North Georgia is gonna be loving that TV Sunday ...

Rich people have either had a therapist for their entire life or they

Chic is wacked yo, and there's nobody to help her but her, and she

About the only thing you could do is have her committed and I'm not
sure what the CA law is regarding doing that. Maybe the kids would
make it easier, but it's usually a high bar to leap.
