HTML table in Excel - formatting problem
I'm creating an HTML table, and setting the mime type of the page so that it is treated as an MS Excel file. This has been working great except for one little gotcha. One of the columns has a "job number" with a format similar to this "04-1234". When the table is opened in Excel, some of the records have their job number treated as a date, which isn't what we want. I've tried putting a single quote in front of the job number (the Excel trick to indicate text only), but the quote is visible in the resulting file. Thus far the only solution we can see is to make the job number an obvious non-number by placing a meaningless character (we're using a period for now) in the string somewhere. This still isn't the best solution, so now I'm looking for other ideas. (NOTE, this is on a CF5 server, but I don't think that is too much of a factor). Thanks in advance for any tips. Datasource Question
I have to interface one of my Coldfusion applications with a dBase IV database. Since CF doesn't have a dBase IV JDBC driver, I'm guessing the only way it's going to work is by using the Datadirect ODBC bridge (sequelink server) with the MS Jet dBase ODBC driver. Unfortunately, the data is not on the CFMX server; it is on a remote windows NT server. I can install Sequelink server on that machine and use the "other" database type to use sequelink's JDBC driver to connect to that server for the data. My question is, since Sequelink is packaged with CFMX, what is the licensing model for the product? Does it only cover using Sequelink on the CFMX server itself? Does it support installation on other machines and if so, how do I install it? (since the installshield w/ CFMX really only works with the cfusionmx directory, the cfmx installer, and other cfmx specific items, it seems obvious to me that it's only meant for use on the coldfusion server, but I thought I'd ask) The next step of this process is to put the CFMX server on Linux, which means I'll *really* have to put Sequelink on another server, since Linux won't afford me the ODBC drivers I need. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Joe ~| Protect your mail server with built in anti-virus protection. Re: The Death of DevNet :-(
How about a quick and dirty answer for the question that is forefront in my mind, and probably a lot of other people as well: If I have a single DevNet subscription that is expiring at some point, what does it cost to keep approx the same features after my subscription expires, and what will the differences in features be. >From the web site, it appears that I'll no longer get Contribute with a Studio subscription. I presume the DRKs are also going away, or are at least going to be a separately purchased item? What about full-feature servers for development use? Still possible, or only developer editions? I don't know if CF-Talk is the best venue for these types of questions to be preserved. Perhaps a FAQ page on macromedia.com would be better? SQL group by instead of cfoutput group?
Hello, I'm working with a clothing database. ProdID is the PK, then I have prodmodelnumber, prodcategory, etc..etc.. Clothes with the same model number have different sizes and colors so there will be quite a few duplicate model numbers in this table. But if you're really using the same object to represent two distinct entities that just happen to both be termed "user", then you're going to run into trouble down the road trying to combine them. In my environment, I can picture several places where I need a user object to pass to other objects that handle a user-related object. They should still be the same object even though they may not always populate every instance variables. I don't see any benefit having two distinct user objects where one has fewer fields than the other, as long as the form, fit and function don't cause any problems. (I may very well run into a situation where I need to create another user-related object, but with the information I have gleaned from this list, I think I can spot those cases before I run into too much trouble.) Re: Resources for learning CFC's ?
Okay, thanks. I've been coding VB.NET for about a year now so OO isn't a total mystery to me, but the whole CFC thing has captured my attention - and I'm sure it's partly because of my experience with .NET thus far. I welcome any and all emails on or off list & look forward to exploring more into CFC's. Cold Fusion has once again captured my heart! SQL Query matching dates
Hi everyone, Just having a mental block here and I wonder if you could help me out? I am writing a library app, very simple, and we are allowing users to book out an item by selecting 2 dates (startDate and endDate). My problem is the query to check if the dates they selected are available. I need to make sure the startDate isnt in between any existing bookings start and end date, the same with the endDate. Also make sure that the users startDate andendDate arent eclipsing any one elses bookings. Now I think I started on the right track, but something aint right: SELECT * FROM LibraryBooking WHERE lib_item = #attributes.lii_id# AND ( (lib_StartDate >= #startDate# AND lib_StartDate <= #startDate#) OR (lib_EndDate >= #endDate# AND lib_EndDate <= #endDate#) ) Thanks in advance! Re: Default Instance Values in CFC Bean
One option would be to use a "mode" setting in your object. If it's set to "full" then you do complete validation. If it's set to "nameEmail" then you only validate part of it. Another option would be to have a NamedUser with just the name fields, and then a FullUser (or whatever) that extends NamedUser and adds more fields. I can't say whether or not that's a good idea; it depends on whether your existing object model is appropriate for that type of inheritance relationship. However, before you go down that road, I'd take a second look and make sure you're not trying to bastardize your user object simply to save yourself some typing. If your single user entity can legitimately have different situations where different things are required, then fine. But if you're really using the same object to represent two distinct entities that just happen to both be termed "user", then you're going to run into trouble down the road trying to combine them. cheers, barneyb On Tue, 4 Jan 2005 15:30:04 -0600, Dawson, Michael <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Barney said, "I much prefer a validate() method separate from the > individual getters and setters." > > Sean pretty much said the same thing. > > I can understand the reasoning behind these comments and I like the fact > that I can wrap up temporary storage of data PLUS validation of that > same data, all in one object. RE: Custom DNS Server?
>> Has anyone run their own DNS server? We use Bind for NT for the Primary, and both Secondary DNS servers. >> Does anyone know the additional load incurred by >> running your own DNS The primary DNS machine is a 450Mgz Pentium with 512meg memory and a 10 gig Hard drive. The secondary boxes are 230Mhz Pentiums. We are the authoritive host for about 1000 domains and the CPU utilization of the DNS servers is practically nil. The bandwidth on a real busy day might spike to 220Kbit/sec but that may be skewed because we also run the secondary mailserver on the same box. I suspect that we might get 40-80Kbit/sec on the DNS alone because the secondary runs 20-50Kbit/sec. Re: Custom DNS Server?
We run our own DNS servers here at Vivio. As someone else mentioned, they don't need much as far as CPU or Bandwidth - they just process a lot of little requests. A lot like someone hitting a simple html page fairly frequently. Our primary DNS server is an AMD 2000+ with 256 MB RAM, and our secondary (backup) is a P2 450 with 128. We run all our domains off these machines with no problems whatsoever. We use BIND which is arguably the most stable and popular DNS server out there. Re: The Death of DevNet :-(
It becomes even more confusing since DevNet is still listed on places such as the "commercial volume licensing" page and in the point document. http://www.macromedia.com/buy/volume_license/vlo/ A Studio MX subscription is 2 points, as somewhere in here: http://download.macromedia.com/pub/mvlp/vlo_points.pdf I need 10 points to qualify for a BVLO (Base Volume License Option; took me a while to define this acronym), so I don't qualify however I can still be an entry level user? RE: Custom DNS Server?
Not sure about a specific product (we use Windows 2003 Server), but you don't need much horsepower at all. You won't need much bandwidth either, since you aren't sending gobs of data, but you will be receiving and sending lots of small requests if you have a busy domain. I would suggest a couple of low- mid-range desktop computers (possibly ones you may have sitting on a shelf), load up the memory and make sure they have good network connections. You might even need dual NICs. RE: Saving empty (zero-length) files is prohibited.
Joe, I've seen this problem before. From the info I could find in a quick search (and my short memory) it has something to do with file extensions on a mac (especially before OSX). Apparently, if you specify an incorrect path or name in the file upload field (try typing one in by hand and deliberately make it incorrect) your browser will actually try to send the file to CF but when it gets there it's an empty file because it never existed on the client's machine. I think that if users add on file extensions to the file names (ie. MyWordDocument.doc) where on a Mac it would normally just be called MyWordDocument that will fix it. Or maybe it's the opposite. Do a google search for "No data was received in the uploaded file" and you'll find some results of people having the same issues. I hope that helps. I've had many errors thrown, since upgrading to CFMX, when uploading a file. The error looks something like this... No data was received in the uploaded file "NatGeo.webloc". Saving empty (zero-length) files is prohibited. Verify that you specified the correct file. I took a look at the open source ColdFusion File Manager demo (http://www.webworksllc.com/cffm/cffm.cfm) and noticed that there's doesn't throw an error with the same file. Further research showed that it's probably because they're on Linux, while i'm on IIS/Win2k. I downloaded their code to my IIS box and it threw the same error. This file is on a Mac, and the Finder shows that it has 462 bytes. The terminal shows it as zero bytes though. My guess would be due to some sort of resource fork or other Mac weirdness. But the error is not simply on Macs. I have had users on WinNT 4 and 5 using IE to upload Word docs when it threw the same error. Could it be an open file issue, or locked file, or some other craziness? On the server side this is a file system issue. CF5 didn't throw the error when i uploaded that file, it simply thinks that i didn't upload a file at all. Anyone have a solution for this, other than simple error catching? thanks. ... .joe ~| Discover CFTicket - The leading ColdFusion Help Desk and Trouble Ticket application http://www.houseoffusion.com/banners/view.cfm?bannerid=48 Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:4:189300 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:4 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4 Donations & Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
RE: Default Instance Values in CFC Bean
Barney said, "I much prefer a validate() method separate from the individual getters and setters." Sean pretty much said the same thing. I can understand the reasoning behind these comments and I like the fact that I can wrap up temporary storage of data PLUS validation of that same data, all in one object. That makes it very handy to carry around for multiple purposes. On the other hand, that is where the limitation is, in my mind. Let's say I have a user-related object with the following instance variables: UserBean.cfc ID# SSN BirthDate FirstName LastName Email I also have the setters and getters for each instance variable. These are all string data types. In addition, I have a validate() method that checks, obviously, for valid data. I want to reuse this same user-related CFC for multiple purposes. One use is with a DAO to manage the database operations. This requires me to fill "all" variables and validate them. My other use is to wrap up "some" instance variables, but not all, for a completely different use, but still user related. For example, I only need to pass FirstName, LastName and Email. Rather than create a new bean with only these instance variables, I just want to use "part" of my UserBean CFC. This is all fine until I run the validate() method. Then, it will tell me that ID, SSN and BirthDate are required and/or not of the necessary data type. This leads me back to Roland's comment where he uses a struct as a data object and not an entire CFC. In Roland's case, his struct can't validate itself as a CFC can. Therefore, he must do validation outside of the data struct. On the other hand, a struct can't define itself using an init() like a CFC can. (Unless you write a function that returns a struct with empty keys.) To sum it up, how can I use a bean-type CFC to pass several data elements, validate the data, yet still not "always" require validation? Hi Donna, I don't know if there's a good, free online resource for introductory learning about CFCs: there's probably some tutorials at Macromedia, and a number of us post on CFCs frequently on our blogs. The ColdFusion WACK by Ben Forta and Hal Helms' Discovering CFCs (http://www.techspedition.com/store/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=3) are probably the best bets for learning about the syntax and mechanics of CFCs. The second book also focuses somewhat on the more important question: why to use CFCs. It's much more important to understand Why than How. They might be interesting in and of themselves but not useful for planning or mapping trends. However when you collect several years of worth stats from something like this it becomes much more interesting (at least to me). I've got the logs from the past four (or maybe five years) for this site. The trends visible across them relating to browsers, monitor resolutions, search engine popularity and the like are pretty interesting (again, at least to me). Lastly saving the logs means I've got some great test cases for statistics engines. For example the log file for the last week of December run about 13Gig total. They provide a nice workout for any analysis engine or string parsing routines. ;^) Jim Davis ~| Protect your mail server with built in anti-virus protection. Re: Oracle, CLOB and CFMX 6.1
Sorry, I can't help you much, I spent about a month testing the Oracle 9i driver with CFMX and ran into alot of random issues like the one you've mentioned. However I'm not saying the DataDirect driver is all that, because imho it is shit as well, but when it comes to CF/Oracle integration there is more support and help with the supplied driver. Are both datasources running in the same instance of CF? I'm just wondering if reinstalling the drivers might solve the problem, however if its the same instance you may want to start examining the differences in the schema. This is a complete stab in the dark, but sometimes this helps if there is some weird data corruption error... wrap the column name in COMPOSE() to covert it to unicode. Ive had instances where the clob could be pulled in SQL*Plus and TOAD, but would lock up the thread if pulled through the DataDirect drivers. COMPOSE() seemed to do something to the data when it converted it to unicode that made CF happy. Again, it's most likely the crappy dataDirect drivers. -Adam On Tue, 04 Jan 2005 13:19:26 -0400, Doug Bezona <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > >Are you using the supplied dataDirect thin driver? >When you say "a large amount of traffic" how many people are you >talking? I'm just curious. It was in my long posting, but here's the relevant bit: "The end result for the 31st was 5,393,594 Requests ("hits") which translates to 231,286 page views and 35,048 visits (as reported by SmarterStats). We transferred about 15Gig of data. Over 50% of that traffic was from 9:30am-1:30pm." For the busiest time that's about 29,000 page views an hour (around 8 pages a second). Of course "large amount" is relative. I've worked on enteprise sites that get more traffic, but not many that get this kind of traffic regulary. (In fact most enteprise sites get far less traffic that you might expect.) But for a small non-profit site I think this is very large. ;^) Of course the whole point is that this kind of traffic is seen for only one day year. Thus the issues with hosting and resource planning and money and so forth. If this site were getting sustained traffic at this rate I've no doubt we could find some way for it to finance itself. Saving empty (zero-length) files is prohibited.
Re: Firefox Tabs
IMHO, this is a bad design choice on behalf of Mozilla. As a developer, you should be able to specify where link opens via JavaScript. If the use has the defaults set in the browser, then the JS code gets presedence. If they have window opening params explicitly set, the page opens where they'd like it to be. This is how CSS works! Users can always override stylesheets in pages with browser settings. It's a shame not to be able to spawn new tabs programmatically. RE: Firefox Tabs
ANSWER: NO There is no special HTML or JS just for Firefox. If you provide "_blank" it will open in a new window in the default configuration of Firefox, IIRC. I have long since customized mine. So realize that you can only provide a suggestion, not absolutely control how your new window is going to behave. -- Ian Skinner Web Programmer BloodSource www.BloodSource.org Sacramento, CA "C code. While pure speculation on my part, I think the death of DevNet is just a way to increase revenues across their product lines. If you think about the cost of DevNet Professional (as low as $599 for one year if you own a Studio MX and $699 if you own pretty much any Macromedia product), it's less than a drop in the bucket relative to the total cost of the individual products. And considering that you receive full licenses (for one computer) of each IDE they distribute (Flash, DW, Fireworks, FreeHand, Contribute), it's hard to generate substantial revenue relative to the thousands of hours put in to each product. As a subscriber, I'm a bit bummed it's going away, but I think it makes good business sense for Macromedia. However, I'm glad they are honoring the remainder of each account's subscription length instead of just cutting people off. Regards, Dave. Re: .jpg on the fly with CF
I've done this in the past by setting the table background to the underlying image, and then drawing the overlaying image in the table as an This doesn't work for watermarking (since you want the overlay to be part of the image in case of "save image as"), but if you are just looking for visual effect, this works fine. In the new, modern world of CSS, there are a number of ways to handle this as well. RE: Secure Email Access
I wrote CFX_POP3 Pro because CFPOP doesn't support SSL connections. Works a treat for GETALL and GETHEADERONLY... http://store.newmediadevelopment.net/cfx_tag.cfm?ProductID=16 Interestingly, when testing some of the advanced functions of the CFX_POP3 tag against Gmail, I found a bug with the Gmail POP3 implementation. When using the POP3 'TOP' command, their server marks the mail as read and you can no longer retrieve it once that happens without going into the Gmail interface and resetting the POP3 functions... The guys at Gmail have confirmed it as a bug but there is no ETA on when it is going to be fixed... The only saving grace is that this this only affects the spam filtering/scoring functions on the GETHEADERONLY action in CFX_POP3 so it's no great shakes if all you want to do is use standard CFPOP like functionality :) Paul ~| Find out how CFTicket can increase your company's customer support efficiency by 100% http://www.houseoffusion.com/banners/view.cfm?bannerid=49 Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:4:189247 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:4 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4 Donations & Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54

There are several reasons: 1) I love stats. ;^) 2) The site does get traffic for only a few days, but in those few days it gets a quite a bit of traffic. This makes those stats great "point in time" stats. 3) The site is non-technical in focus and community oriented. I feel this means the stats are more representative of "average" computer users (at least those in the Northeast) than other sites I work on. > I'm guessing you must be volunteering your time. You'd have saved > many, many hours of work by simply moving to a dedicated server a > couple of days prior to being swamped. There are many situations > where no amount of hardware will overcome software design problems, > but by the same token, on badly underspec'd hardware you'll never > achieve satisfactory performance levels no matter how much time and > effort you put into optimizing the software. Well, I not quite volunteering my time - I do get paid a flat yearly fee for doing the site (a fee which works out to around $4 an hour for my services). ;^) As a non-profit it's very difficult to get them to spend money unless there's a clear need. Worry about the site going down isn't enough, the site going down is. Still, a dedicated server for one month is going to cost them more than hosting for the entire year has. There are only two of use that officially work on the site (myself and a graphic designer). With the changes requested this year (and the fact that all materials were quite late) we didn't have time to do the testing or optimization I would have liked to do. In a weird way I'm glad the site had problems. This is a perfect defense for insisting a move to a dedicated server in early December next year. A move early enough to allow for some late night load testing. Am I misunderstanding what > you're > saying? Either that or I'm not saying what I mean (which is probably more likely). Only the session cache is created in that block, not the session instance. See - doesn't THAT make more sense? ;^) One of the first things the protected block does is instantiate an "Application" CFC and place it in the shared Application scope. A property of that object is "Sessions" (another CFC acting as a cache manager collection for session objects. Since this object is created during this time a second run through the init process would eliminate the first one and create an empty new one. However OUTSIDE the initialization block (outside the lock) a custom "Session" CFC is instantiate and a reference to it is placed in the application-scoped session cache previously created. In other words the initialization of the Application (including the container for all session objects) is run only once for the whole application, but the initialization of the Session is run for each user. There's a lot more to the code, of course, but that the crux of the session-related instantiations. Jim Davis ~| This list and all House of Fusion resources hosted by CFHosting.com.
