Re: Business Case for a 4.5 -> 7 upgrade

2005-02-10 Thread Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC
The availability of object orientation in CF, the fact that the apps
run as Java bytecode after being converted, better error handling,
better/faster/cooler forms generation, no more C++ runtime compiled
pages for a tremendous performance increase, much-updated database
drivers, substantial improvements to things that didn't even *exist*
in 4.5 like Query of Queries and charting and reports.

The availablity of cftrace, cfdump, cflog and vastly improved
cftry/cfcatch/cfthrow tags. In CFMX 6.1 and 7 the cferror tag will
even allow you to choose from 3 different types of errors, and
depending on which you have the flexibility to cfmail the error
contents to yourself. I don't recall that being possible in 4.5,
although that might have been my one 3.1.1 project. Either way, error
handling is drastically better in CF, as are all the troubleshooting
tools.

Cfhttp finally works consistently and pleasantly. Which it always did,
unless it didn't. When it didn't... it really didn't. I trust I make
myself obscure. :)

Cfreport is ancient history. Crystal reports is no longer a valid
option, and what we do have directly integrates with CF.
Best-in-class, baby!

Leverage the power of external Java classes. There's a hundred million
bajillion java classes out there, and with cfobject/createObject we
can now pull them right, straight into CF and use them. I had to have
a little help with my first try, but I was finally able to get a Java
object working that allows me to resolve IP addresses to hostnames
from within a CF app... without cfexecute or cfhttp. It was way cool.

And finally, tell them this: They pay you. If they were to drop a bit
of change on CFMX, they could pay you to be productive instead of
paying you to waste time fixing things that don't need to be broken.

Ok, maybe don't tell them that. Something like it maybe, but not
exactly that. ;)

Good luck!

Laterz,
J

Many people have already responded to your post - and all of their
reasons are valid. Based on what you've said, I can tell you that I'll
verify all of the reasons you wanted verified, except for the
"development time decreased" reason... that may or may not be true
depending on what you want to do? Speaking of "what you want to do"...
there could be one or one hundred reasons to upgrade depending on what
you want to do. You only mentioned reporting and pagination... both of
which, ColdFusion MX 7 has made huge advances in. If you can be more
specific about what you (or your employer) want to accomplish, we can
give you better ammunition.

the above CREATE TABLE statement will also create you a couple of
default contraints, using automatically generated names. In effect the
above query was run as:

CREATE TABLE HartGraph (
 IDNumb int NOT NULL default 0,
 HorizMark  int NOT NULL CONSTRAINT
DF__HartGrap__Horiz__123EB7A3 default 0,
)

You are going to have to drop the contraint before you can change the column:

ALTER TABLE HartGraph DROP CONSTRAINT DF__HartGrap__Horiz__123EB7A3

You should then be able to run your alter column statement

ALTER TABLE HartGraph
ALTER COLUMN HorizMark VARCHAR( 20 ) NULL

RE: Business Case for a 4.5 -> 7 upgrade

2005-02-10 Thread Calvin Ward
Just a thought, considering that 4.5 doesn't support even UDFs, I can see
how any given project, with that feature alone, could be a little bit faster
to code...

4.5 is slow, unsupported by MM and doesn't adequately support certain
current technologies such as XML, Web services and Unicode.

New CF7 feature request - please support it - Casting query columns

2005-02-10 Thread Martin Parry
I have today posted a feature request on MM's website.. If anyone else
agrees with it and would us it please also request it.

Due to changes in the way CF7 handles casting on queries, I can no
longer populate a string value into an integer column using . Assuming I had a unique_id of 21014 I may want to
prefix this with PID_ - I now get a manky error - Invalid data PID_21014
for CFSQLTYPE CF_SQL_INTEGER.

A  would
be a real bonus as I'm now needing to kludge around this.

Hiya - I too store WDDX and structures in query cells - So it WAS YOUR
FAULT it's broken :p - My own stooped fault for not testing EVERYTHING
while it was in Beta - bugger!

As I say I've kludged it for now by writing a quick custom tag but it
seems too klunky - I'm sure at Java code level they could perform it a
lot quicker - particularly on large result sets.

Capturing Mac's SmartQuotes

2005-02-10 Thread Matthew Small
Hi,

One of my users pastes text into a form from his Mac word
processor. Quite frequently, the document contains "smart quotes" - curly
quotes that go on each end of a string. Apparently, some PCs have issues
displaying these characters, so I need to know how to convert them to
straight normal quotes.

I am under the impression that these are Unicode characters as
opposed to ASCII characters. As such, I am unsure how to do a replace in CF
- MX 6.1. I've looked in the livedocs but I don't see a function that works
like chr() for Unicode. What am I missing here?

Thank you,

Matthew Small

Using Application.cfc has decreased performance

2005-02-10 Thread Stavros Tekes
Hi All,

I have replaced Application.cfm in an old application of mine with
Application.cfc.

The events set there are OnRequestStart (checking to see if user has logged in
and initializes variables in the request scope) and onRequest (that cfincludes
a page according to a URL parameter).

I noticed a performance delay on the new version of the application. some pages
need almost twice the time to load than they did before.

Has anyone observed anything similar?

Thanks in advance,

Stavros

it will allow you to
send a request to a page after the first drop down is selected without having

Re: how to display data in two select boxes where the second one's display depends on the first one

2005-02-10 Thread J M
I've done something similar using JavaScript on our site for lists of makes &
models of cars. The first box displays a list of makes, and depending on the
make selected, the second displays all the models for that make. That list is
huge, but here's an abbreviated version using a few makes:

function models_ChangeMenu()
{
NewOpt = new Array;
NewVal = new Array;

menuNum =
document.search.make.options[document.search.make.selectedIndex].value;

if (document.search.make.selectedIndex == 0)
{
document.search.model.disabled = true;
}
else
{
document.search.model.disabled = false;
document.search.model.focus();
}

if (menuNum == "Wartburg")
{
NewOpt[0] = new Option("-Search All " +
document.search.make[document.search.make.selectedIndex].text + " Models");
NewOpt[0].value = '';
NewOpt[1] = new Option("1.3");  NewOpt[1].value = "1.3";
NewOpt[2] = new Option("311");  NewOpt[2].value = "311";
NewOpt[3] = new Option("312");  NewOpt[3].value = "312";
NewOpt[4] = new Option("353");  NewOpt[4].value =
"353";
}

if (menuNum == "Bond Bug")
{
NewOpt[0] = new Option("-Search All " +
document.search.make[document.search.make.selectedIndex].text + " Models");
NewOpt[0].value = '';
NewOpt[1] = new Option("700E"); NewOpt[1].value =
"700E";
NewOpt[2] = new Option("700ES");NewOpt[2].value
= "700ES";
NewOpt[3] = new Option("750E"); NewOpt[3].value =
"750E";
NewOpt[4] = new Option("750ES");NewOpt[4].value
= "750ES";
}

if (menuNum == "Bobsy")
{
NewOpt[0] = new Option("-Search All " +
document.search.make[document.search.make.selectedIndex].text + " Models");
NewOpt[0].value = '';
NewOpt[1] = new Option("SR2");  NewOpt[1].value =
"SR2";
}

tot = NewOpt.length;
lst = document.search.model.options.length;

for (i = lst; i > 0; i--) {
  document.search.model.options[i] = null;
}

for (i = 0; i < tot; i++) {
  document.search.model.options[i] = NewOpt[i];
}

  document.search.model.options[0].selected = true;
}

The form part would look something like this:

   -Search All Makes
   Wartburg
   Bond Bug
   Bobsy

   -Search All Models

When the selected value of the first drop-down changes, the second displays the
associated values that are specified for that selection in the javascript (the
same happens when the onfocus event is triggered in the second drop-down).
It's probably worth mentioning that this implementation puts the processing on

2005-02-10 Thread Adam Haskell
That does not work on some browsers most notably Opera, i beleive. So
be careful of this if you want cross browser support. Alternatively
you could use a hidden iframe as an alternative which is what we use
in some instances.We also use assosiative arrays in javascript.

Hi,

processor. Quite frequently, the document contains "smart quotes" -
curly
quotes that go on each end of a string. Apparently, some PCs have
issues
displaying these characters, so I need to know how to convert them to

I am under the impression that these are Unicode characters

in CF

works
like chr() for Unicode. What am I missing here?

xml to struct help

2005-02-10 Thread Doug James
Please help, my forehead is very red and painful from banging against the wall
over this one.

Given this XML snippet:

ABC Co.

This struct accurately represents with the "generic" and
"maxRows" attributes.
find_business = structNew();
find_business.generic = "2.0";
find_business.maxRows = "10";

What I can't figure out is how to get into the structure. If I do
find_business.name = "ABC
Co."; that is making the name an attribute but I need it as an element.

Any suggestions?

without really knowing the specs, seems as if you'd want an array
within the find_business.generic struct/key.

find_business.generic = arrayNew(1);
find_business.generic[1] = "ABC Co.";
find_business.generic[2] = "XYZ Co.";
.
etc

RE: how to display data in two select boxes where the second one's display depends on the first one

2005-02-10 Thread Dave Merrill
The fastest js-based method that I'm aware of is to have cf generate the
html for each set of options as js variables, then just set
select2.innerHTML to the one you want to use. Particularly efficient if
there are a bunch of options to set, since you don't have to iterate through
each one every time.

I know that the innerHTML attribute isn't html401 spec, but my understanding
(http://www.quirksmode.org/dom/w3c_html.html) is that it is supported in the
major browsers, and I've verified that it does work w current versions of
IE, Firefox and Opera on win2k. Caveat emptor though: This particular code
was built for IE specifically, and I haven't done any cross-browser testing
of it.

I have replaced Application.cfm in an old application of mine with
Application.cfc.

The events set there are OnRequestStart (checking to see if user has
logged in and initializes variables in the request scope) and onRequest
(that cfincludes a page according to a URL parameter).

I noticed a performance delay on the new version of the application.
some pages need almost twice the time to load than they did before.

Has anyone observed anything similar?

Thanks in advance,

You can use CAST in QofQ now. So, you could use QofQ to recard the
column to varchar. You could also simply make a duplicate of your ID
column when performing your select and cast that as varchar. Or do
queryAddColumn and put the data there.

I recall. One caution though, and this may or may not be a concern,
this method is bandwidth intense, as opposed to other methods.
Normally I wouldn't make a point of it except in my work place
bandwidth is a BIG concern and this method is a bad solution for us,
for most it is perfectably acceptable. At my old workplace we put each
select in a hidden div, and unhid the proper div upon selection,
worked on all browsers like a champ, ate up bandwidth though :)

2005-02-10 Thread Micha Schopman
innerHTML should be (in a perfect world) replaced by the dom methods,
but is still the fastest method to draw element on the browser canvas.

It has it's opposites however when drawing IMG elements, or any element
containing images. You might cause a denial of service attack on the
browser, but overall it is still the best method in terms of
performance.

The fastest js-based method that I'm aware of is to have cf generate the
html for each set of options as js variables, then just set
select2.innerHTML to the one you want to use. Particularly efficient if
there are a bunch of options to set, since you don't have to iterate
through
each one every time.

I know that the innerHTML attribute isn't html401 spec, but my
understanding
(http://www.quirksmode.org/dom/w3c_html.html) is that it is supported in
the
major browsers, and I've verified that it does work w current versions
of
IE, Firefox and Opera on win2k. Caveat emptor though: This particular
code
was built for IE specifically, and I haven't done any cross-browser
testing
of it.

Please help, my forehead is very red and painful from banging against
the wall over this one.

Given this XML snippet:

ABC Co.

This struct accurately represents with the "generic" and
"maxRows" attributes.
find_business = structNew();
find_business.generic = "2.0";
find_business.maxRows = "10";

What I can't figure out is how to get into the structure. If I do
find_business.name = "ABC
Co."; that is making the name an attribute but I need it as an element.

Any suggestions?

Followup, I don't find it odd that performance has degraded. Remember
that application.cfc get's called on each request made, and on each
request it has to evaluate both functions.

So where it used to call

Application.cfm -> index.cfm

It does, on each request

Application.cfm -> onRequestStart -> onRequest -> index.cfm

I sometimes experienced CFC's with practically the exact amount of code,
being slower than cfmodule calls (which should be slower). It is hard to
say what is causing such behavior, and often depends on the type of
constructions. :)

Hi All,

I have replaced Application.cfm in an old application of mine with
Application.cfc.

The events set there are OnRequestStart (checking to see if user has
logged in and initializes variables in the request scope) and onRequest
(that cfincludes a page according to a URL parameter).

I noticed a performance delay on the new version of the application.
some pages need almost twice the time to load than they did before.

Has anyone observed anything similar?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Capturing Mac's SmartQuotes

2005-02-10 Thread Ben Doom
Since a Uinicode char is just two bytes, if you can find out what two
byte values they represent, you can still replace them.

Assuming they're 142 and 143:
replace(text, chr(142)&chr(143), '"', 'all');

Try just using asc() to get the values.

Comparing Remote & Local Documents for Incremental Back-ups?

2005-02-10 Thread Rick Faircloth
Hi, All..

Using CF 4.5 (Don't even start...if the horse you own plows the field just
fine, keep using him...)
Windows 2000 Server

I'm considering building my own CF-Based Backup system
to allow my clients to backup their data to my server...via CFFTP, I
guess...at this point.

I'm not totally happy with the existing FTP solutions on the market,
such as Serv-U in combination with FTP Voyager...they're ok, but are
lacking some features I would really like to have, such as emailing me and
my client with a stats report when a backup job is completed,
failure/success, etc.,
and Serv-U/FTP Voyager lacks this capability.

With a CF-based system, I can at least do that...

But are there other inabilities that CF-based solutions will have that would
make such an endeavor fruitless? (At this point, if new editions of CF make
such an application possible, we'll discuss a new horse...)

For example, does CF provide the capability to compare documents and
back up only those that have changes made to them? (Is this back-up
function
typically a result of comparing "date-modified" info or is actual data
content
of files compared in typical backup systems?)

Another question...can CF work with Explicit SSL encryption or some other
type of secure data transmission? Can it encrypt files that would be stored
on my server so that if someone who might hack my server got the info, they
couldn't read it?

Any other thoughts are welcomed on this issue...

Matt...I know that you use Serv-U and FTP Voyager for this type of stuff...
any reason why you haven't built a CF application to do this?

Thanks for any and all input...

Rick

Personally I think you would be better off using a true FTP server on your
end for receiving the files. Using CFFTP means your server will need to go
out to an FTP server on the CLIENT side to get the backup files. That
introduces a whole new set of problems with corporate firewalls, NAT
routing, or whatever the client has in place. If you stick with scheduled
client software on their end it will save you a lot of trouble.

As for e-mailing results, you can have a process that runs every X minutes
and checks for changes to their directory that would trigger an e-mail alert
of some kind.

Not sure if this is your problem, but do you have debugging turned on
with the "report execution times" option selected? CFCs with that
option turned on in general are dog slow because each method call has
to register itself with the debugging service. CFMs don't have this
issue. If so, try turning that option off and see what happens. We
have a very CFC-heavy application that is noticeably sluggish with the
option on, but very responsive once it's off.

Regards,
Dave.

Back in CF5, I believe this was the case. Granted the performance gain
would not be noticeable on a block this small, but if you have large blocks
of text the gains start to add up. Spread that out over a few hundred files
and millions of requests per day and your server would see the difference.

With CFMX it's not an issue, but some people, myself, still minimize the
text within CFOUTPUT by habit. CF5 also had some slight performance gains
if you converted many (> 3-4) CFSET statements to CFSCRIPT. Again, in CFMX
that is not an issue as far as I know.

In any case, it's just a matter of coding style at this point.

CFMX 7 alongside 6.1 on JRun

2005-02-10 Thread Ken Dunnington
Has anybody tried installing MX 7 next to 6 using JRun on OS X? This
is just for development, and I'm about to try it right now, just
wanted to see if anybody else had already done so. I got 7 installed
on my home box quite easily last night although I removed 6.1 first.
I'm going to set up another server in JRun, install 7, migrate my 6
settings, then modify my httpd.conf to use the new jrpp proxy for the
7 server. Since I use this machine for development work on a 6.1
production server, I need to keep 6.1 around, but I want to have 7 up
so I can impress the higher-ups into upgrading. :)

Incidentally, I did the connection to Apache by hand last night, so I
didn't even check to see if it's any easier in this release - I
suppose it's technically in the realm of JRun so it hasn't changed
any.

Yes. For the backup itself, the easiest way may be to write a script/batch
file that can be scheduled on the client side that would use tools included
with the OS to create the backup file then FTP it to your server. I do
something similar with my workstation here to make backup copies of my
accounting databases to get backups up to two of my servers. If you're
planning to make this your primary business, you might consider having
custom backup/transfer software written for the client side.

RE: Comparing Remote & Local Documents for Incremental Back-ups?

2005-02-10 Thread Rick Faircloth
I don't plan to make this my primary business, but I do see some
gold in them thar hills! :o)

I know Windows 2000 and XP have built-in backup software
(not initially installed on the Home edition, but available on the CD),
but I guess the client would have to use third-party software to accomplish
the FTP transfer, right? Unless MS is starting to include that capability
in XP...?

If the client has to install FTP software, them I guess I'm back to where I
have
been...experimenting with Serv-U and FTP Voyager. It makes a decent
solution,
especially since Serv-U is offering from 3-5 free Voyagers with each Serv-U
purchase
during February.

And...if I can run a scheduled task with CF to notify of successful backups
and compare previous numbers of files on the server to current files, along
with
other possible information, then I guess that would be sufficient. I just
don't
want to have to review logs every day for every client to see if backups
were successful...

As far as RemoteData goes, I've already been using IBackup.com, and they've
got
a great solution...email and all. No glitches from setup to
execution...good prices, too...
5 GB of storage starting at $9.95 a month for 5 GB...

Any other thoughts or suggestions, Justin? Anyone?

Re: Problems Querying Text File Datasource Using ODBC/Coldfusion MX

2005-02-10 Thread cf coder
Hi Jared,

Thanks for responding (I work with cfcoder btw). You're right; we don't have
to do it this way, but it fitted in nicely with some other stuff, and being
stubborn and not liking to admit defeat, we'd been wanting to get this to work.
 In the end though, even if it does work we'll still need to employ other
methods as the driver only supports SELECT & INSERT, ie no support for UPDATE &
DELETE, which we obviously need on a user admin page. As for your second point,
yes, the file is being created by a php web app that we have no control over,
and even if we knew any php, is encrypted anyway! Mind you, we have ordered a
text book! ;o)

For the time being, we've used CFFILE to copy and rename the file, we'll do our
work on it, and then use it to copy over the original. Clunky I know - the
original app developers have advised that a SQL backed version will be out
hopefully this year, so with a bit of luck this is only a stop gap until then.

Regards,
Mat

There is a command line FTP utility in 2000 and XP that you can direct
commands to using an input redirector and a text file. With a batch file
and Windows scheduler you can automate the FTP transfers.

Generating the list of files to be uploaded would be the hairy part, but
someone good at batch programming could probably whip up a routine to build
the file list and modify it in a way that the FTP client can use. If you
were to give the client something like FTP Voyager you may be able to script
that in some way as well. I know there are scriptable FTP clients out
there.

Re: Comparing Remote & Local Documents for Incremental Back-ups?

2005-02-10 Thread Bob Haroche
> Any other thoughts or suggestions, Justin? Anyone?

I'm late to this thread but thought I'd share a recent solution, not CF
based, I've found for remote backups:

SyncBack:

http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/sbp-features.html

$15 windows shareware (also a freeware version). It allows you to designate
any number of directories or entire drives (including networked drives) and
synchronize them to another location, including an ftp server. You can do a
true synch, or a mirroring one way or the other. You can then set it to run
automatically using Windows task scheduler.

It's not a true backup in that you're not compressing data into one large
file, but it does the sync'ing and mirroring very well.

I'm using it for a client to upload her 1 gig of data to an ftp server,
using Hurricane Electric hosting(unix/apache, no CFML) as they offer 5 gigs
of storage for $25/mo (www.he.net). Since she doesn't change gigabytes of
data each day, after the initial mirroring, each day's change involves only
minimal data changes to upload/mirror.

For the client to view the ftp backup data, she's not using an ftp program
per se but instead using WebDrive, which lets her view any ftp site just
like a networked drive in My Computer or Windows Explorer:

http://www.southrivertech.com/index.php?pg=./products/webdrive/index

(a little pricey at $50/license but it makes the whole off-site backup
system very easy for the client).

Generating the list of files to be uploaded would be the hairy part, but
someone good at batch programming could probably whip up a routine to build
the file list and modify it in a way that the FTP client can use. If you
were to give the client something like FTP Voyager you may be able to script
that in some way as well. I know there are scriptable FTP clients out
there.

RE: Few cfoutput Vs Many cfoutput

2005-02-10 Thread Mike Nimer
I hate it when I see this, makes it hard to read and hard to maintain.

Technically cfoutput is a tag, and having CF go in/out of a ton of tags is
slower then going in/out of only a few. Although, granted we are talking
hundreds of a ms, so we'll never notice it. In older versions cf had to
parse everything inside the cfoutput tags, at runtime, now the compiler
takes care of that.

I would say it's really a toss up, performance wise. But it's a lot easier
to read and maintain if there are fewer cfoutput tags around everything. At
least I think so.

I figured it was done b/c somone jsut didn't know any better, but I am
seeing it where I would think the individual writting it wouldn't do it that
way. Why would anyone code like this as opposed to just throwing a cfoutput
at the beginig of a page and the end, assuming they are ussing something
other than to control white space.

One co-worked claimed he did it for performance he thought it would parse
quiker, in CF5...I disagree.

There is a cast() function you can use in a QofQ. Just run another QofQ to
cast the column and then run your querySetCell() functions as you wish.

Ah, this just proves that we should all be careful what we wish for in the
first place. The query object in CF6 can store anything you want with no
complaint - I even store structs in query cells (using the query as a 2D
array of structs with named columns). We asked for control over typing in
queries and this is what we got. Oops.

It sounds like it's time to write that QueryCastColumn UDF after all...

I have today posted a feature request on MM's website.. If anyone else

Due to changes in the way CF7 handles casting on queries, I can no longer
populate a string value into an integer column using . Assuming I had a unique_id of 21014 I may want to
prefix this with PID_ - I now get a manky error - Invalid data PID_21014 for
CFSQLTYPE CF_SQL_INTEGER.

A  would be
a real bonus as I'm now needing to kludge around this.

The datasources would be segregated, but by default I don't think the file
structure would be.

Also I believe in the default usage of instances, the jvm settings are
shared.

My understanding is that instances are completely separate. They are
essentially separate CF servers, as they run in separate JVMs, with separate
datasources, separate code etc.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

In this case why not just CAST the integer column to a varchar in the

You can use CAST in QofQ now. So, you could use QofQ to recard the
column to varchar. You could also simply make a duplicate of your ID
column when performing your select and cast that as varchar. Or do
queryAddColumn and put the data there.

We do what we have to do, no?

However, I think it might be advisable to use CFHTTP to pull the data
into a query... then you can dump it off into your own table in a real
DB. Use a cron template to refresh the data at intervals, and you have
control over managing existing data and updates from their side, plus
being able to easily update the data from your side.

Just a thought.

Subject: Comparing Remote & Local Documents for Incremental Back-ups?

Rick

Re: xml to struct help

2005-02-10 Thread Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC
XML isn't just a straigh-up struct... if you're going to reproduce an
expected XML snippet into a well-formed XML document by hand, you need
to recreate the whole thing or it just... won't work.

Check out this example...
http://w2ksrv1.neo.servequake.com/tmp/xmlexample.cfm

If you click the title of the cfdump, it will rotate between simle,
extended, and collapsed views... check out the extend version of the
view in the bottom-left table cell.

xmlRoot.xmlElement.xmlName=find_business
xmlRoot.xmlElement.xmlChildren contains a collection of structs that
represent url objects.

XML isn't just a struct, or an array... if you're talking XML and it
needs to be validated, you're going to have to either be very VERY
careful about how you create your structured object OR you should just
write it out to a file, read it in via cffile, and xmlParse() it into
a native XML binary object.

Just remember, though... xmlSearch and xmlTransform both have rules,
and those rules follow XML standards, and the format of the document
IN MEMORY is critical or they just won't work.

Laterz,
J

well, for one...you now have to worry about doubling up on # signs

Re: Limitations of CFMX 7.0 Developer Version Gateways?

2005-02-10 Thread Brandon Harper
> Double-check the JVM version that CF is using (SYSTEM INFORMATION in
> the top nav of the CF Admin). A colleague same this behavior on a
> system that had the 1.4.0 JVM.

Thanks Sean. I'd actually tried another JVM as well just in case--
the default one which came with JRun (I did the multiserver install),
as well as 1.4.2_06, but forgot to mention that.

This morning I reinstalled CFMX 7 as the time limited Enterprise
version rather than the Developer version and it seemed to clear up
the problem. Previously it appeared that the Damon Cooper's gateway
example would just sort of hang after 10 calls to the gateway, and now
it runs all 100.

So now I'm curious as to what way the gateways are limited in the
Developer's version so I'll know to look out for that "gotcha" in the
future. As an initial guess, it looks like you're limited to 10
gateway calls per server request?

Thanks,

- Brandon

RE: Few cfoutput Vs Many cfoutput

2005-02-10 Thread Dawson, Michael
The main issue, IMO, is how many colors, or in-document anchors, are in
the code?

Do you want to have to use ##ff or #ff? If you wrap all with
CFOUTPUT, you will need to double-up on the #s.

I agree that it's a matter of taste.

I hate it when I see this, makes it hard to read and hard to maintain.

Technically cfoutput is a tag, and having CF go in/out of a ton of tags
is slower then going in/out of only a few. Although, granted we are
talking hundreds of a ms, so we'll never notice it. In older versions cf
had to parse everything inside the cfoutput tags, at runtime, now the
compiler takes care of that.

I would say it's really a toss up, performance wise. But it's a lot
easier to read and maintain if there are fewer cfoutput tags around
everything. At least I think so.

RE: Few cfoutput Vs Many cfoutput

2005-02-10 Thread Calvin Ward
You're right Charlie, at the very least folks should be doing their color
declarations in a file that looks something like: style.css!

I'd be curious to know if your second observation is true, does anyone have
any feedback on that?

I know that in most of the work I'm doing currently my .cfm files tend to be
fairly small in the first place...

How about using external CSS files and not worrying about # with the color.

Re: xml to struct help

2005-02-10 Thread Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC
Sorry, mixing my examples up here...

xmlRoot.xmlElement.xmlName=find_business
xmlRoot.xmlElement.xmlChildren would then contain a collection of
struct containers that hold your "name" children.

Every element has a collection of attributes above and beyond the
obvious ones in your document. xmlRoot, xmlAttributes, xmlName,
xmlNSPrefix, xmlURI, etc. and if you're going to build a struct by
hand to mirror an XML document... eh, dude... I think you're going to
have some trouble.

Why not create the string as a variable... just stick the text into a
var... then pass it into xmlParse and use that? It's going to be way
easier and much less frustrating than trying to cobble together a
mock-XML document.

Just my opine...

Laterz!

CF MX 7 - Speed issues

2005-02-10 Thread Irvin Gomez
Hi, everyone

I'm testing on my local machine and notice a marked delay in Coldfusion
rendering Flash forms or creating PDF/Flashpaper docs.

My question is: are there any actual samples of this somewhere on the web? I
don't mean the Flash demos Macromedia has. I'm talking about a real form that I
can access and fill out through my browser.

Thanks!

If you use CSS then the # doubling goes away (excpet for the occasional

It was been proven time and time again (everytime this thread shows up) that
the performance hit due to extra parsing is negligable (a few milliseconds)
or non-existent (since CF 5).

Your code is then cleaner and easier to readless possible points of
failure due to missing CFOUTPUTs.

To me it's a no brainerI've done it this way for as long as I can
remember (and I've been at it since 3.1)

Re: xml to struct help

2005-02-10 Thread Doug James
Jared,

Thanks for the help.

What is actually happening is that I am trying to invoke a web service using
cfinvoke. It will not
accept an xml document because it throws an invalid argument exception. Boy do
I wish it was as
simple as parsing a string into an xml doc and passing that in. When using a
web service that
expects a complex element (made up of other elements) cfinvoke gets passed a
CFMX structure
. So I
*have* to convert the
xml to a struct.

And yes, I am having trouble. Lots and lots of trouble!

Maybe some MM experts could chime in here.

And then each array entry gets a new struct :) With the key as structkey
and value as strucktvalue.

Subject: xml to struct help

Please help, my forehead is very red and painful from banging against
the wall over this one.

Given this XML snippet:

  ABC Co.

This struct accurately represents with the "generic" and
"maxRows" attributes.
find_business = structNew();
find_business.generic = "2.0";
find_business.maxRows = "10";

What I can't figure out is how to get into the structure. If I do
find_business.name = "ABC
Co."; that is making the name an attribute but I need it as an element.

Any suggestions?

Many of the apps I build are quick and dirty apps that generally don't
have a wide audience and won't be used more than a few times. I won't
go to the trouble of creating a style sheet just to color every other
row with MOD 2. I know enough not to waste effort where it's not

If you're looking to sell this solution, then you you should seriously
consider moving past 4.5.

Reason 1) It's probably hard to find
Reason 2) It's no longer supported by MM at all

Subject: Comparing Remote & Local Documents for Incremental Back-ups?

Rick

RE: xml to struct help

2005-02-10 Thread Matthew Small
Are you saying that the webservice itself (non-CF I imagine, and it's not
something you wrote) needs a complex datatype as a parameter?

Perhaps you could determine the exact XML structure it needs passed in (by
going to its WSDL page) and create that structure in CF to pass.

Jared,

Thanks for the help.

What is actually happening is that I am trying to invoke a web service using
cfinvoke. It will not
accept an xml document because it throws an invalid argument exception. Boy
do I wish it was as
simple as parsing a string into an xml doc and passing that in.

Hi, Bob...

Now, I LIKE SyncBack!

I already had WebDrive installed as an evaluation
and it, combined with SyncBack is running perfectly!

And only $15, too. If I could just get a WebDrive-type solution
for around $25, I have a better "Setup" charge...of course, I'll
have to setup everything for my clients, so the setup charge will
usually more than cover $65, but I'd like to keep the setup charge
as low as possible for small clients...but even at $65 for SyncBack
and WebDrive, this a really good solution...I really didn't want "backup
software"
that lumped everything into a proprietary format...I want to be able to see
my files
in a directory structure like in WebDrive...

If you're looking to sell this solution, then you you should seriously
consider moving past 4.5.

Reason 1) It's probably hard to find
Reason 2) It's no longer supported by MM at all

Subject: Comparing Remote & Local Documents for Incremental Back-ups?

Rick

As far at the "Meredian Personal Call Director" experience, this was because
the person was not in the office and their phone was configured to forward
to their cell phone, but apparently they did not answer. This really isn't
any different from not reaching anyone else on their phone. They do this
because they want to maximize the opportunity to take your call, although it
didn't work out this time.

RE: Using ColdFusion to set scroll to position?

2005-02-10 Thread Ian Skinner
No, CF has no idea what that means, nothing has been sent to the client yet.
And it is the client that figures out things like "document.body.scrollTop" and
"window.pageYOffset" Once the request has been sent to the client, the server
is no longer involved in the processing, it has moved on to the next request.

If you really really really need something like this, you will have to use
cookies, forms and/or hidden frames; in order to pass values from the client
back to the server.

But one should always ask why one would need this? Why does the server need to
know and keep track of whether it is document.body.scrollTop or
window.pageYOffset. JavaScript is much more adept at determining and using
this information.

Re: xml to struct help

2005-02-10 Thread Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC
The liveDocs for dealing with complex datatypes say to do this:

Look at the WSDL complex type definition. Create a struct that matches
the type and configuration of the requested datat as a struct, and
pass it back into the webservice.

So for your situation, you should be able to get by like this:

   ABC Co.

becomes

find_business["generic"] = "2.0";
find_business["maxRows"] = "10";
find_business ["ABC Co"] = "";

Is that getting you closer?

J

U.S.-based SMS/SMPP API

2005-02-10 Thread James Edmunds
Dear all,

I've seen a nice list of SMS/SMPP account providers at Damon Cooper's
blog, mostly UK or Europe-based. (http://tinyurl.com/4ouqp)

Does anyone have a similar list of U.S.-based (and dollar-priced)
account providers? I'm interested in a connection aggregator to send
across various wireless services, rather than an API for just one
cariier.

Thanks in advance!

Best,
