Re: SQLServer Connect problem - was it ever resolved?
Are you using Windows 2003? If so, have you updated SQL2000 to the very latest service pack? To quote Microsoft, Microsoft Windows Serverâ„¢ 2003 supports only SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 3 What they mean is that there is a bug in SQL on 2003 whereby it won't communicate across TCPIP. SP3 fixes it. You won't believe how long I messed around with firewalls before I figured that one out :) Ian ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. RE: Re[2]: Try Docubee Forms please
What does that have too do with what my suggestions and thoughts were? Rehash: I suggested that the thumbs be clickable to bigger screen shots to clearly see the products so I could decide on whether or not I wanna invest the time to check it out, as it is you click on a thumb and it downloads the programs which was quite annoying. Which ended up not mattering because the product isn't cross browser capable, so that gave me my answer right there. What intrigued me was he said it was like flash forms, so I went to check it too see what it could do but you can't see what it can/can't do because the sceenshots are too small and link to the product download. Are there any plugins for Homesite+ or Eclipse or some other tool out there that can provide code insight for cfc's? CFMX: Dissed by Breeze and FlashLite?
When CFMX7 was launched, I queried as to why the only marketing on MM's site was a small picture and some text in the center Products column. I surely thought that with the launch of the most exciting and feature rich version of ColdFusion, the product would get top billing on MM's website and be featured in the main animation banner that spans across the page, above the fold. To my surprise, this never happened. During the launch, Flash Mobile and a few other products were featured in the main animation - many of which were days/weeks old at this point. Enter Breeze 5. Sure enough, on the day of the announcement, there is a nice banner highlighting product as well as a smaller graphics and text in the center products column. Surely, MM wanted the world to know about Breeze 5, and the website shows it. Why am I mentioning this? Well, IMHO, it's a subtle but important indicator about MM's view of CFMX. It's not that they won't devote $$ and resources to its continued development, but it's clear that the broader reach products like Breeze and some of the Flash authoring tools will continue to force CFMX to backstage instead of its rightful place at center stage. To make things worse, MM and Adobe are set to merge. With both companies heavily invested in the tools market, CFML's future could be bleak. CMFX won't dissapear, but it's growth in terms of market share AND features could be slowed to an unacceptable pace as MM/Adobe's attention focuses more closely on their cash cow: tools and IDEs. Of course there are other ways to look at it: CF may be exactly the type of product that won't get generated sales from such placement. CF is a more deliberative product: something that people need to study and try before choosing. Breeze and Flash are, well, flashy products that, with a short web demo may attract managers and buyers on that strength. You might also just simply say that Flash is the companies bread-and-butter. It will get top placement more often than not. However Breeze is (from all accounts) struggling a bit. It gets top placement to promote it. However with no such placement ColdFusion is (from all accounts) flourishing. Sales are up, satisfaction is high. Why bother dedicating such space to a product that's doing just fine without it? It's not that they won't devote $$ and resources to its continued development, but it's clear that the broader reach products like Breeze and some of the Flash authoring tools will continue to force CFMX to backstage instead of its rightful place at center stage. To make things worse, MM and Adobe are set to merge. With both companies heavily invested in the tools market, CFML's future could be bleak. CMFX won't dissapear, but it's growth in terms of market share AND features could be slowed to an unacceptable pace as MM/Adobe's attention focuses more closely on their cash cow: tools and IDEs. Re: Load Balancing/Filtering?
An F5 is a hardware load balancer, and you can do some really cool things with it using the URL rewriting techniques that Macromedia wrote about in some of their technotes. We have one in our load testing lab. Take a look through the technotes for the articles that address this. They also talk about serving images from a web server in a way that doesn't bog down JRun. Anchors and CFLOCATION
I am having a very strange problem with anchors and cflocation in an application I'm working on. I'm almost 100% sure there are no errors in the code so I'm more hoping that someone will know of an existing problem or will have run into this problem in the past and know a solution. Ok, here's the deal: We're using fusebox 4 and I have a .cfm that processes a few different form submissions and has cfif blocks to break apart which form is being processed. At the end of each cfif block, I have a cflocation that puts the user back to a listing of items and jumps them down to the one they just added/edited instead of having to scroll. I'm using # symbols to escape the anchor in the url and it works fine on all of the cflocations except 1. The funny thing is that it's the exact same code as one of the conditions further down the page. I even put a link on the page with the exact same code (copied and pasted) from the cflocation into the href and a cfabort after that. When I do that, I can click on that link and it does just what is expected. I can't figure out why it would be losing the anchor, but when the cflocation happens, it goes back to the listing page and the end of the link doesn't have a #anchorname on it at all. Anyone know why this could be stripped off? Something weird happening in the headers? Any suggestions are appreciated. async gateway issue
i am really inexperienced with these event gateways. however, i have gotten the simple example of the concurrency library to work. what i want to test is passing a value back and forth. how do i do that? This simple example demonstrates how to spawn and run many long-running tasks simultaneously using the Async CFML Gateway from a regular CFML web page, and creates a synchronization point in the CFML page that waits for all threads to complete before continuing. Communication between threads in this example is done using Server variables (with CFLOCK). Things to check: 1. The url in the cflocation has two # signs if its inside a cfoutput block and one # if it not. 2. The link name and url anchor are exactly the same. Personally I don't do a cflocation until the data has been validated, otherwise they are shown the same form again straight away with an error message. -- Damien McKenna - Web Developer - [EMAIL PROTECTED] The Limu Company - http://www.thelimucompany.com/ - 407-804-1014 #include stdjoke.h ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. RE: CFMX: Dissed by Breeze and FlashLite?
I would tend to agree with Jim. I suspect the marketing decisions in this case are based largely on their antiscipation of the impact of different types of marketing on their sales. If they antiscipate little response (in terms of sales) from flashy adds for ColdFusion (which is doing well sales-wise with other types of marketing), in comparison to flashy adds for ... well Flash... then I think it makes sense to spend the marketing resources in the way that will get them the most sales. Of course this is all just conjecture, but they seem as reasonable explanations as anything else I think. Or you could theoretically bind the checkboxes to an ActionScript function that would update a hidden form field with the values of all the checked boxes. (I've not worked with the flash forms myself, so I don't know how difficult that would be to accomplish.) While this will work (although it's more work in your cf/as code), unless your list of items from your database is pretty close to static, this will force the server to recreate the flash movie on each request, which means loading it will continue to be slow rather than speeding up after the first request due to the availability of a cached swf. s. isaac dealey 954.522.6080 new epoch : isn't it time for a change? add features without fixtures with the onTap open source framework http://www.fusiontap.com http://coldfusion.sys-con.com/author/4806Dealey.htm ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. RE: Error with cfargument type=numeric order?
Hi Ben, Looks like cfinvoke should be avoided when calling web services. This is absolutely not true. I tried your example on CFMX 7 and was unable to reproduce your behavior. I could change the CFC and the WSDL changed. I could use the same invoke (even without refreshing the stubs!) and it worked. I refreshed the web service and it still worked. Be aware that CF jumps through a bunch of hoops to try and match cfinvoke arguments with the correct function arguments in the proxy stub. The CreateObject() syntax gives you a web service object, and you are then directly calling the proxy function that matches your arguments. I see two possibilities: 1. The proxy function you are calling is not getting changed to match the changes in the web service. 2. The Java skeleton that is created from your CFC and is publishes as a web service by CF (via the web service engine) is not getting regenerated, so proxy object generated from the WSDL is not changing. One thing to check is that the WSDL for the service changes each time you change your CFC. Do you have trusted cache turned on? If the WSDL does change, this will eliminate #2. Then you should make sure you are refreshing the web service the in CF admin after verifying that the WSDL has changed. Check out the 'stubs' directory, do the web service class files get updated? If you continue to see the behavior after checking these things, then we might want to drill further to see if the argument matching code in CF needs fixing. P.S. Going on vacation for a week tomorrow, so please CC me directly on any response as I will be turning off CF-Talk. -- Tom Jordahl Macromedia Server Development ~| Find out how CFTicket can increase your company's customer support efficiency by 100% http://www.houseoffusion.com/banners/view.cfm?bannerid=49 Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:4:205258 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:4 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.4 Donations Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54

Re: Anchors and CFLOCATION
I'm not certain about the missing anchor in the url, but I do know that browsers can't accept both a query string and an anchor... if the url has a query string prior to the anchor, the browser assumes the anchor is part of the query string. If the url has a query string following an anchor, the browser assumes the query string is part of the anchor. Doesn't sound related to your issue, but what I've done in my own apps is passed a url variable and then used javascript to set the anchor. index.cfm?varx=1hash=myanchor body onload=document.location.hash='#url.hash#'; This is a crude example, but it ought to work. And what about recordset being accessed like an array: ArrayToList(query['column']) ? Fabio Terracini Synex Technologies Co. I actually went to the extent of creating a QueryColumnToArray() function to handle the variation... Which reminds me... I recently had a debate with someone regarding whether a query recordset is a structure in the same sense as the Struct functions work. RE: CFMX: Dissed by Breeze and FlashLite?
Sorry for the rant, but I hate to see CFMX get dissed by it's own company! If I were in charge of Macromedia, I'd do exactly the same thing they're doing. I'd be far more concerned about selling Flash and its dependent products (Breeze, Flex, FlashComm, Flash Video, FlashLite, etc) than about selling CF. I like CF, don't get me wrong, but it's not the unique kind of thing that Flash is. It will always be somewhat of a niche product, no matter how good or popular it is. Flash, on the other hand, is clearly the most important asset that Macromedia has. It is the core of Macromedia's business. It is the one thing that Macromedia has, for which there's no competing product. It's installed on practically everybody's computer. And, at some point, I do recall seeing a CF 7 banner at the top of the MM site. I don't know how long it was there, though. RE: CFMX: Dissed by Breeze and FlashLite?
Well, you made a point, and it wondered me and others too that there was no exposure for this on the Macromedia site if I might say power release. Stating it might have to do with flourishing sales, that would be nice but I don't think so. CFMX7 can always have extra sales, especially on the moment that competitors start gaining more marketshare quicker. I don't see what is wrong by exchanging the Flash with CFMX banners so you have a Breeze / CFMX combination circulating on the website. Flash already has pretty much a monopoly and so it would not have damaged marketing for Flash in such a way it would have affected Flash, but it would have helped CFMX in a very small amount for people navigating to the Macromedia website after the news coverage. There must have been a good reason, marketing teams usually don't forget placing such banners. I do understand the idea behind this post, looking forward to a merge with Adobe where alot of people expect the combination not to give CFMX the attention it needs and in return focus even more on Flash/FlashPaper/Breeze. We'll see what happens. Just wait when they sign the papers, and come out with more information like a roadmap for CF (hint). I store the ID in the value field and handle the list or array when it's posted. I cannot seem to do the same thing with a flash form and checkboxes. It won't allow me to instantiate multiple checkboxes with the same name. Is there a way around this limitation? Yes and no. The current version of flash forms doesn't support multiple checkboxes with the same name, so you'd have to provide a different name for each checkbox, i.e. cfinput name=check_#itemid# Then on the form action page, you would need to loop over the item_id values from your database again to retreive the results... Yeah they can, you just have to make sure the anchor is at the end, e.g.: http://www.mysite.com/index.cfm?foo=bar#linky I've never had any luck accomplishing that -- in every browser I've tested, I end up with a url variable foo = bar#linky s. isaac dealey 954.522.6080 FWIW, the following test worked fine on IE6, IE5.5, IE5, Opera754, and Firefox102, all on win2K: query_string_and_anchor_test.cfm?last_name=asdffirst_nam e=qwer#anchor50 Just noticed that if addtoken is true or omitted for cflocate, the cfid and cftoken that get added to the end of the query string screw up the anchor, presumably since it's no longer at the end. Dave Merrill I'd expect the cfid/cftoken string to be appended to the anchor in that case actually -- so yea, the anchor would be screwed up -- though the anchor itself would still be at the end, it'd just be inclusive of that extra value that's not part of the a-name attribute which is why it wouldn't work. s. isaac dealey 954.522.6080 new epoch : isn't it time for a change? add features without fixtures with the onTap open source framework http://www.fusiontap.com http://coldfusion.sys-con.com/author/4806Dealey.htm ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. RE: Error with cfargument type=numeric order?
Hi Tom, First off, thanks for your detailed response. Hopefully, I'm catching you before you leave on vacation. My comments inline: Hi Ben, Looks like cfinvoke should be avoided when calling web services. This is absolutely not true. I tried your example on CFMX 7 and was unable to reproduce your behavior. I could change the CFC and the WSDL changed. I could use the same invoke (even without refreshing the stubs!) and it worked. I refreshed the web service and it still worked. BEN: I've got CFMX 6.1 (version 6,1,0,83762) running. I don't know if anything changed between my version and CFMX 7 Be aware that CF jumps through a bunch of hoops to try and match cfinvoke arguments with the correct function arguments in the proxy stub. BEN: Trusted cache is off for me, and has always been off. BEN: Very interesting. I found the stubs directory, and found a couple of things that seem off. To preface, I'm making an assumption (perhaps incorrectly), that all folders within the stubs folder that start with WS are webservices. 1. There are 13 folders which start with WS in the stubs folder. yet I only have 3 published web services in the CF administrator--one locally on my machine, and two remote. When I was first testing web services, I connected to a bunch of public web services that I found on xmethod. Once I figured out what I needed to, I deleted the references to those web services in the CF administrator. I would expect that the related web service info in the stubs folder would get deleted as well. That does not seem to be the case. Perhaps this is correct behavior, but it seems wrong. 2. Tom, you appear to be right that the web service class files (and all other associated files as well) are *not* getting updated when I click the refresh button in the CF Admin interface, even if I make changes to my webservice (I've added a couple of functions today, for example). How odd. Regardless, I am still able to access the updated web service and all new functions using the createobject method. I haven't tried to use cfinvoke this morning. P.S. Going on vacation for a week tomorrow, so please CC me directly on any response as I will be turning off CF-Talk. -- Tom Jordahl Macromedia Server Development ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. RE: Anchors and CFLOCATION
Maybe it just took the browser people a while to catch on, like with other standards like HTML, CSS and DOM. The date on that RFC is about the time I started working with ColdFusion (version 3)... Offhand I honestly don't remember the last time I tested it, so it could have been before that RFC was widely supported. The RFC-compliant syntax worked for me when I was using Netscape 2 and IE 3, for what that's worth. Strange... maybe my machine was screwed up at the time. RE: Combining verity results with database query
You can try using query of query. This can work ok in many cases. Use QueryValueList (or something like that) to extract the primary key values from the verity results, and then use them to create a db query that retrieves those rows. Last step is to combine them with q-of-q. CFMX: Dissed by Breeze and FlashLite?
As goes Flash, so goes Macromedia/Adobe. If FlashLite makes them the next titan of the software industry, they will have plenty of money to spend on developing products like CFMX. Think about it this way. Microsoft existed for the last ten years on the dual monopolies of Windows and Office, and they used the revenues from those giants to get into all kinds of other businesses- games, hardware, corporate services, web sites, interactive TV, server products- just about anything you can think of. Just think what MM/Adobe will be able to do if they own the document standard, the RIA standard, and the means to deliver documents and RIAs via CF, Flash Remoting, Breeze, Flex, and whatever else comes next. So be happy that they have a product that reaches a significant chunk of the planet's population. Revenues from that product may just be funding the next version of CF. Sorry for the rant, but I hate to see CFMX get dissed by it's own company! ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. RE: CFMX: Dissed by Breeze and FlashLite?
They do, features like the reporting tool and the event gateway are aimed towards business users. I have used Crystal Reports alot, and everytime there were always large bugs or consistencies in the product. There are other products yes and Oracle offers a superior product but that comes with a superior price too. It was a relief when the CF report builder was released. Such functionality always does it well in business environments, managers kill for. I switched reporting the provision sheets, I create at the end of each project, from Crystal Reports to the CF reports builder. Although Flash is the unique product of Macromedia like Dave mentioned, I don't think it really helps Flash in marketing as it would have helped ColdFusion. Flash already has the market, ColdFusion obviously does not. If Flash has a new feature/version/player, sure do marketing. If no other product needs extra attention, sure do marketing for Flash. But when the need is there do marketing for ColdFusion. Micha From: Calvin Ward [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Mon 5/2/2005 7:57 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: CFMX: Dissed by Breeze and FlashLite? Dealing with unworkable query column names
I'm trying to query a MySQL 3.23 database to get table names that match a naming pattern. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to alias the column name returned, plus the name contains both a space and the percent sign used in my original SQL statement. RE: Anchors and CFLOCATION
Yep, tried the extra as well :-( I've got about 4 of my fellow developers stumped on the problem here too. Isaac Dealey [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Yeah they can, you just have to make sure the anchor is at the end, e.g.: http://www.mysite.com/index.cfm?foo=bar#linky I've never had any luck accomplishing that -- in every browser I've tested, I end up with a url variable foo = bar#linky You may want to try adding an extra ampersand to separate them then, e.g.: http://www.mysite.com/index.cfm?foo=bar#linky According to the RFCs the first example above should work. http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum21/8405.htm -- Damien McKenna - Web Developer - [EMAIL PROTECTED] The Limu Company - http://www.thelimucompany.com/ - 407-804-1014 #include stdjoke.h ~| Discover CFTicket - The leading ColdFusion Help Desk and Trouble Ticket application http://www.houseoffusion.com/banners/view.cfm?bannerid=48 Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:4:205301 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:4 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.4 Donations Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
Re: Scheduled task creates a session
Thanks, from your email and Ian's, I figured out how to do it. At the top of my application.cfm ,I've got the line cfset set_session = cgi.http_user_agent neq CFSCHEDULE works perfectly. I had no idea you could set the session management on the fly. I figured as soon as you turned off session management, it would turn off all active sessions. thanks again. On 5/2/05, S. Isaac Dealey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I was just experimenting around with the unsupported sessiontracker object and was surprised to see that my scheduled task was creating a session every 3 minutes when it ran. Considering my session timeouts timeouts are set at 4 hours, that's a lot of extraneous sessions held in memory. What can I do to keep this from happening? I'd put another application.cfm file in the task subdir, but I need objects from the root application.cfm to be instantiated. Is there a way to specify to kill the current session? Thanks Marlon Add this to all your scheduled tasks: scheduled=true then this in your application.cfm cfparam name=url.scheduled type=boolean default=false cfapplication sessionmanagement=#not url.scheduled# Just make sure your scheduled task pages don't reference any session variables. Or... optionally, you could explicitly declare a cftoken cfid pair in the scheduled task url's, which would cause them all to share a single session. Neither of which I've tested, just throwing out ideas. s. isaac dealey 954.522.6080 new epoch : isn't it time for a change? add features without fixtures with the onTap open source framework http://www.fusiontap.com http://coldfusion.sys-con.com/author/4806Dealey.htm ~| Discover CFTicket - The leading ColdFusion Help Desk and Trouble Ticket application http://www.houseoffusion.com/banners/view.cfm?bannerid=48 Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:4:205302 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:4 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4 Donations Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
RE: Error with cfargument type=numeric order?
Ben, BEN: I've got CFMX 6.1 (version 6,1,0,83762) running. I don't know if anything changed between my version and CFMX 7 Yes, there were many changes in web services from 6.1 to 7. BEN: Very interesting. I found the stubs directory, and found a couple of things that seem off. To preface, I'm making an assumption (perhaps incorrectly), that all folders within the stubs folder that start with WS are webservices. I would just deleted everything in the stubs directory, restart the server, and see if thing start making more sense. I can believe there were bugs fixed from 6.1 to 7 in this area, but I would have done the fixing and I don't remember anything like this. -- Tom Jordahl Macromedia Server Development ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. Re: Dealing with unworkable query column names
Ouch... I'm glad I don't have to deal with that schema... But you don't want to use evaluate anyway... plus, unless the table only has one column, this won't work anyway: tblname = Evaluate(q. q.columnList) -- q.columnlist is a comma delimited list of the column names, so you would be trying to say evaluate(q.first, last, middle, bloodtype) which won't work... you want to use array notation: cfoutput query=q cfloop index=colname list=#q.columnlist# #q[colname]# /cfloop /cfoutput hth s. isaac dealey 954.522.6080 new epoch : isn't it time for a change? add features without fixtures with the onTap open source framework http://www.fusiontap.com http://coldfusion.sys-con.com/author/4806Dealey.htm ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. Heh... you learn something new every day. :) I never need scheduled tasks for my stuff, so I guess it never even occurred to me that cgi.http_user_agent would indicate when a scheduled task is run. You're welcome btw. :) You can also use cfapplication within a page to drop into other applications on your server to get their information... in say an application-manager type thing... just put your vars for the manager app in request and drop into the individaul application to get its app data. s. isaac dealey 954.522.6080 new epoch : isn't it time for a change? add features without fixtures with the onTap open source framework http://www.fusiontap.com http://coldfusion.sys-con.com/author/4806Dealey.htm ~| Logware (www.logware.us): a new and convenient web-based time tracking application. Your licensing looks like I can use your libraries in commercial applications (i.e.; no GPL infections) Thanks. Right now, I'm sorry - but examples are far and few between (that will change soon). If you get a chance let me know where examples would be most appreciated and I'll address them first. For now feel free to request examples from me directly - you'll get them, just without documentation. As for the licensing they are all under the Open BSD license.
