RE: Mass Email Solution

Yeah but that was due only to limits of processing power, bandwidth and the
"10" chunked mail setting on CFAdmin - we could have upped it to 100 (which
is the max) Can't rember how though :)

Hey,

Any suggestions on the best way to manage and send email to a list of about
10,000 in an efficient manner?

Would I need to use a high-performance mail build?
Should I not use cfmail, but a compiled tag?

Thanks.

Christine

Thanks for the response. I guess my own reply would be to back-up what Dave
(Hannum) has just posted - with the fact that why should I upgrade all my
developers to DWMX when I'm already having to upgrade my designers to
FLASHMX? It will "confuse" them into thinking that they should be
"designing" (yeah I know it's an over-simplification and a little rude to my
coder staff, but the point is...) when I pay five people to design for them.
For pure coders/developers why not extract "HomeSite+" from DWMX - as CF
Coder MX - CFStudioMX or whatever - and get us "coders" to pay for it... I'm
sure fiscally MM will make more money this way (if that's the bottom
line)... I know I will be happier to part with a 10x(plus)$150 dollar
upgrade for this than for DWMX

Hi Guys,
I see your points, in my reply I didn't actually mean "get use to it", I
more meant to say lets get some concrete feedback and I'll pass it on
internally and you should pass it on through our web site. The thing is, I
can't go and change Dreamweaver MX today to include the Windows explorer
extension we had in Studio. BUT, if we can get all of your feedback
organized and in more of a technical format (as Michael is also suggesting),
then I can certainly pass it on and maybe we can get some of these features
added in the future or through Dreamweaver extensions (note, I know nothing
about these so I may be off on that one!). With Chris's point about being
"leftovers", that really makes me sad and concerned. I have been very
excited in the past few weeks with the preview release of CFMX, I
think it's a very cool release and that's me personally - not because I work
for MM. I can definitely see your point with training, the only suggestion I
would have is to maybe use HomeSite + which has CFMX tag support. Then
you'll have Dreamweaver MX and maybe you could ease your employees into it
by doing the included tutorials in Help and on our site? That's just a quick
off the top of my head idea - understand if it's not realistic :) Back to
the point of being leftovers... just so you know, I actually watch this list
and others, plus the Forums (this includes HomeSite) and then I pass on what
I'm seeing from you guys - I'm not the only one who does this, Vernon does
too. I even write a weekly report on what you guys are saying, we are
seriously listening and we (because I'm from the
CF community) are not leftovers. Keep in mind this is really the first round
of our companies working together and combining the technologies, imagine
what we can do with future releases - especially with your feedback.

I hope that helps...

Christine

developers in the UK and NZ I came to use Cold Fusion back in the day when
Nick Bradbury sold HomeSite 2.x to Allaire - and as I was one of the
original beta-testers of HomeSite - you can guess which side of the fence I
sit on.

My company are currently beta-testing Flash and CF MX across the board and,
while I have to admit that in the world of "so called" WYSIWYG software
Dreamweaver has been by far the industry leader, dropping Studio will make
me seriously consider which direction my company heads in the future. See
it from our perspective; I've spent thousands of dollars on software and
training my staff, why should I know have to spend more money buying
"upgrades" that require me to re-train my staff. My suggestion would be to
give the rights to Studio back to Nick Bradbury and licence him to develop a
MM partnered version of, say "Studio MX" - which I am sure 90% plus of CF
developers across the world would be willing to "upgrade" to and MM could
get a commission on each sale, keeping developers (surely the front-line
salespeople for the CF product to clients) happy in the bargain Just a
thought eh.

Christine,

I won't try to talk for everyone here however, as a developer who spends
more time in code then in the look and feel part of a web page, I an see why
everyone is getting a little rude here. We as Cold Fusion developers have
enjoyed a relationship with Allaire that made us feel as if we were
extremely valued, because we were. We were the primary (or at least
influencers to the primary) source of revenue for allaire. Now, Allaire is
no more. Macromedia has come in and apparently shifted that view. No
longer are the coders paramount but rather the desktop publishers/graphic
artist types. Now you (Macromedia) drop our favorite tool, replace it with
something that is more geared to the WSYIWYG-S editor types and we are left
in the cold.

On top of that, in this thread alone, your replies have been more like "get
used to it" rather then "let us see what we can do to fix this situation".
We are not used to that. Hell, if I were to imply that to my customers, I
would be fired. Which brings me to my point. It appears at first glance
that the old group of developers are no longer your customer, we are just
leftovers. You are hitting people in their sense of security even if it is
only perception and saying or doing nothing to make us feel different.

We are discussing details on an IDE, which by itself is somewhat benign, but
if you look at the overall attitude (and perceived direction) of Macromedia,
you should be able to easily see why we are getting a bit worried and/or
frustrated with the situation.

Hi Everyone,
I know Mike Chambers and Nathan Stanford already pointed this out, but Neil
is not a Macromedia employee. He's a Team Macromedia member, but not an
employee, and his views are his own - not Macromedia's. Anyhow, I've been
using CF Studio for a long time, I'm also one of the CF'ers Vernon spoke to
yesterday and we went through the differences between CF Studio and
Dreamweaver MX. I know a number of people on this list from the Allaire days
and I (and everyone else at Macromedia) value *all* of your feedback. I know
Vernon already pointed out the wishform, and yup, I'm going to point it out
again :) http://www.macromedia.com/support/email/wishform?6213=6 PLEASE post
your feedback, it really can help develop future versions of our products...
However, I'm also going to go through each and every one of these messages
and make my own summary of your wants/needs/opinions so your feedback is
organized and clear. If I find something that can be done in Dreamweaver,
I'll be sure to post with the steps. In the meantime I have one request:
please, please, please, can we be polite when we post? I know the majority
of people have been but Michael Dinowitz has been nice enough to host this
list for us - we're all in the same boat here let's please respect one
another's opinions.

I hope this helps, now I'm on to organizing your feedback...

saved as (for example) Index.cfm - that you call it href="Index.cfm" as
"index.cfm" will fail. Best to keep all file names lowercase - except
Application.cfm that has to have a capitalised "A".

Apache install is slightly more complex than IIS - you may need to manually
type in certain code into the appache httpd.conf - but if you have problems
then re-post.

You will probably find your biggest problems will be data-sources. Unless
you have an enterprise license you will need to port all your db stuff to a
*nix friendly data software.

All I can think of currently.

XML to CF parser

2002-04-24 Thread James Maltby

Hi - does anyone know of a good - reliable xml 2 cf parser that will work on
*nix based systems?

So far have tried seven "solutions" including soxml (uses COM),
cf_XMLParser, cf2xml to name but a few.

We need to collect an .xml file from a remote server that holds (on average)
50 news items (over 100kbs) - run through it and display contents as html...

Any suggestions?

RE: survey trouble

2002-04-15 Thread James Maltby

Or, alternately - if you have 10 answers to collect, give each a
number/letter value

Q1. 1A, 1B, 1C, etc.
Q2. 2A, 2B, 2c, etc.

Then just insert them as usual

INSERT INTO tablename (col_Q1, col_Q2, col_Q3, etc.)
VALUES (#form.Q1#, #form.Q2#, etc)

Then you can read the table and know how many users voted for each
question

What about giving each a letter value = e.g.

Strong A = A
Agree = B
Neutral = C
Etc.

Then on "landing" page converting the "val" via a "switch" statement into a
value and inserting it into the database.

UPDATE table

SET Valcolumn_A = Valcolumn_A + 1

SET Valcolumn_B = Valcolumn_B + 1

I think this should work, but it may be worth a try - mainly due to

You can use CF Express, but it is a little limiting, but CF5 is free as a 1

only allowed 1 connection, which would be yourself. Well, I guess I could
use it for my personal home page as well, since I am the only one that ever

Pardon me! I hadn't heard of CF Enterprise. Hence the question "Does CF
have an equivalent?". If I ever get to code in CF again I'll have to look
into that.

I don't know what it is you don't get, but as a part-time telecommuter, I
prefer not to have to rely on a remote server while developing. As for
using the web site on the laptop, the application contains a lengthy survey
that relies on skip-logic; not something we would want to do over in another
format (gets expensive).

I have no interest in debating whether or not it's 'fair' that ASP is free.
For the young beginner or hobbyist, it's may be the only affordable option
to get started!

Yeah, I guess you can develop CF in Notepad as well; just never did. Scratch
that point.

Have a nice day!

1. PWS? What I don't get it. PWS is a web server. Sure ASP is built in,
but you can get a FREE Developer version of CF Enterprise and it can work in
conjunction with PWS. Where's the problem here?

2. Again if you install the free version of CF on the laptop I doubt this
would be an issue. Though I question having an entire web application on a
laptop. If anything I would have given them the information they needed in
another form and made life easier to upload data to the rest of the
application.

Sure you pay for CF, but we already knew this. Not everyone can have 75% of
the world's desktop so they can just offer things for free. I don't see why
you can't program CF in a word processor, matter of fact a lot of my
debugging is on notepad when I am offsite. Sure I love CF Studio, but it is
in no means required.

I don't understand some of the issues you brought up here. Please explain
better.

I have to agree that CF is easier and faster to use than ASP. However, ASP
does have the advantage of PWS. Does CF have an equivalent? I started out
with ASP, then used CF for two years, and now I'm using ASP again. I'm not
ecstatic about it, but I have found a couple of advantages:

1. Thanks to PWS, if I want to work from home, I can just copy the ASP site
to my home computer. With CF I had to work across a cable connection which
slowed things down a bit. Of course, I have to access the database over the
network either way, but the web files can be retrieved and saved faster with
PWS.

2. One of our web sites is not only used by people on-line, but also by
field personnel who use laptops, and have to upload and download data.
Thanks to PWS and MSDE, they will be able to use the same ASP pages as the
on-line users, while using DTS to transfer data back and fourth. In a
similar situation with CF, we had to develop a separate Access application
for the field team members.

Some other more obvious advantages is that ASP is free and can be developed
in a simple word processor, if need be. Microsoft is also a huge name,
whether you like them or not, and it doesn't hurt to know how to user their
technology.

that means Linux I dunno - worth a try I guess - you can use the optional
ARGUMENTS syntax to pass command-line arguments to a program, elements of
the ARGUMENTS array is copied into a corresponding array of exec() arguments
on UNIX.

Dunno if this helps...

. and Solaris. It's worth noting, though, that there can be quite a bit of
variation between one flavor of Unix and another, and MM has been pretty
conservative about what's a supported configuration. There'll be more
concern for getting other flavors of Unix/Linux on Intel supported, I think,
before anyone at MM cares to support OS X. For an idea of how complex these
issues can get, check out the archive for the cf-linux list.

Also, I'm not sure whether you can just take binaries from other platforms
and run them on OS X. I suspect not - Mac processors are big-endian and
Intel processors are little-endian (or is it the other way around - I can
never remember), so you probably can't just run the Linux version in
compatibility mode, like I suggested a minute ago.

And again, while OS X can run all this nifty software, who's actually buying
servers from Apple? Can you rack-mount those new iMacs?

That sounds like Humpty Dumpty's argument: "a word means exactly what I want
it to mean, no more and no less". (My quote is probably inexact, though.
Sorry.)

Just one word of warning; I know some self-described "coders" who would belt

that description for them. They wouldn't care for "ducks" or "dogs" either,

RE: What's the difference between a coder and a programmer??

2002-03-12 Thread James Maltby

Dave, at the end of the day it boils down to semiology - ye may as well call
them ducks and dogs - we differ our billing around whether someone could
(for example) buy a magazine, install a free dreamweaver trial and build a
web page (duck/coder/muppet/whatever) and someone who can write (for
example) a unique bespoke application built in Java and plugged in as a CFX
Applet (dog/programmer/guru/whatever-plus-plus) - therefore we bill "coder"
work as work that involves formatting, authouring, using describing "code"
and we bill "programming" as work that involves an understanding of well
formed programming languages - hence my argument that those people coming to
Fusebox from a "page formatting" history will find it harder to understand
and adopt that those who come to Fusebox from an Object Oriented history

That's not coding. It's authoring, or formatting. I worked with markup
languages (primarily as a technical writer) long before HTML became popular,
and I was never a coder or a programmer in any meaningful sense during that
time. I always pitied those programmers, because they had to work such long
hours.

RE: Fusebox pros and cons

2002-03-12 Thread James Maltby

Can open, worms all over the floor!

IMHO - Fusebox is a methodology with a lot of dedicated followers - if you
come to CF from a "coders" background it's very rare for you to adopt
fusebox (unless you are first taught this way), however if you come to CF
from a "programmers" background you will take to fusebox like a java built
duck to object oriented water.

Advantages:
1) re-use your code (build something once, then plug it in again and again
to each of your solutions) - reuse code in a O-O style.
2) work by piece rate (farm out whole sections of your product and have
people in sweat shops work over "fuses" for you while never being able to
see the whole picture) - remote and rapid component development
3) build the bricks first then make rooms then slot the rooms together
(build a site completely before you even put it together) - rapid component
development and site building.

Disadvantages:
1) Non-linear development structure (hard to get your head around if you
build sites "organically" from seed to flower - fusebox seems like DNA level
work - where you can build the flower first then get around to the seed.)
2) Needs very good documentation to follow (very hard to "fix" an error in a
site if you weren't responsible for boxing all the fuses - really depends on
how well the site was built along the fb guidelines)
3) Hard to re-train if you're not a programmer - we've got 8 CF developers
world-wide working for us and only two of them use FB - both of these come
from hard-core programming backgrounds, others have tried and given up - FB
is a lifestyle choice and not just for Christmas!

Hal Helms is the daddy, anything written by him is groovy - but I think
there may be two FB camps now

RE: suggestion on complicated form design.

2002-03-06 Thread James Maltby

If you need all the fields filled then whatever you do you should "enforce"
entry (handy also to have the old html * next to each "required" field).

How you build the form depends on your target audience - younger users will
not want to "enter" 12 names on one form as it will involve "scrolling" -
whereas they like "clicking" - which means it may be better to create a
"submit/add another" forced march path - which shows them "one" form but
allows them (after their first entry) to just "submit" what they have or
fill out another form and "submit another" - which in turn builds up the
query - once you get to the "submit final" choice display the full entries
on one page with an option for them to edit the fields

Hello cf-talk,

I'm about to build a fairly complicated form.

It will require a getting a list of names, and the age and sex of
  each person.

I will need to enforce the age and sex requirement of each name
  listed.

Option 1. Build a form with lots many fields for name, age and sex.
Once submitted, check for a value in the name field, then check for
a value in the age and sex field. If there is a value in a name
field, and no age or sex fields, give them the form back to fix.
This sounds like a ton of work. Will need up to 12 names on the
  form.

Option2. Ask how many names they will give, then provide a dynamic
form with exactly the number of fields they need. Enforce
  everything.

Anyother suggestions? This sounds like a real nightmare. Any tips or
suggestions before I dive into this would be most appreciated!

RE: NT authentication

2002-03-04 Thread James Maltby

OK - you are gonna have to do two things here - the first is to make sure
that NT logins are attached to specific IP addresses - so that when a user
logs in to their machine there's an NT/IP match. Secondly you will have to
create a "set-up" screen so that the "first time" they look at the Intranet
they get a log-in screen doorway. Use this initial "set-up" scenario to
create an NT/IP password cookie on that machine - so that after this first
stage they will not have to log-in again if their NT/IP cookie pair matches.
However if they log-into another machine their should not be a matching
NT/IP cookie set for that user which will "force" them to "set-up" again...
Etc.

Not sure if that's the answer but it seems the easiest solution to me...

As far as I know, I can only get at CGI.AUTH_USER if we use basic
authentication. If we use basic authentication, the user will be asked for
a username and password when the home page of the intranet is requested.
What the client wants is no login at all. We somehow have to pick up the
user's NT login credentials without the user knowing about it, then pass
that information to the server.

RE: Visual Equation Building

2002-02-28 Thread James Maltby

CF + FLASH would/could work in theory - the "visual" system would have to
have symbols (flash term) for each character/symbol you needed (perhaps with
a scrolling up/down sort of fly-wheel system of choosing them) - which could
then be "dragged and dropped" onto a "math page" - this would trigger an
event that would append the associated character/symbol to each symbol into
a variable - this variable string (xml string) could be added to and
subtracted from (with an eraser tool that would "undo" the last move) -
which in turn would be stored to a file/database when the equation if
completed.

Things to look out for would be translation of special characters/symbols
(e.g. *,%,{,[ etc) as this would effect the ActiveScript (AS) - so perhaps a
codex that used a number based system that could be translated from the
xml/data string on saving the equation.

Secondly you would have to work it so that "picking up" a symbol and
dropping it on the "math page" would trigger a one off event - if the very
same symbol was then picked again and moved around the page then dropped
again this should not trigger the character/symbol appending function. Also
is a similar symbol (another "x" for example) was then picked up and dropped
on the "math page" the AS would have to realise this.

Thirdly you would not be able to "save" the visual product though - with the
placement of all the symbols on the "maths page" so that when a user came
back they would have to re-build each equation - unless another complex
logic was used in creating both x,y co-ordinates and saved these too in an
array Getting complex now...

What you are talking about here is a very complex integration system -
perhaps a java applet may be better...

Interesting concept tho.

Good luck

RE: someone want to help me?

2002-02-28 Thread James Maltby

Three stage process:

1. secure connection to enter info (card details) - either unique or third
party vendor
2. checking system - either unique or third party vendor
3. paying system - either unique or third party vendor

The best "solution" for a simple fix is to go with a third party vendor who
will supply the SSL (secure connection), card checking system and payment
system - of course this all comes at a fee... Depends on the vendor but
usually around 2-4%. Good CF "friendly" easy to use solution is WORLDPAY...

The "unique" solution is a longer term set-up and will still cost, but
depends on what you want, it will involve getting an SSL (verity 128 bit
encryption software) and dedicated IP address for it to sit on. It also
involves getting hold of a internet card checking facility (usually supplied
by a bank or card provider - you need to check on this as it's different for
us in the UK) - you also will need an Internet Merchant account with a bank
in order to make payments online to your account - via a system like ePDQ
(Barclays in the UK for example) - again tho this will cost a percentage of
the transaction and most of the companies that offer this service will
expect a base rate return.

Hey All,

The CF docs seem to be lacking an explanation of the "dbname" attribute for
CFQUERYPARAM. Now the
obvious is that it is for naming the database (wow I amaze myself
sometimes). That said, doesn't
the datasource take care of this? is there a benefit to using the attribute?
is it just a typo in
the docs? why is the sky blue? ;-)

I can send you a groovy web colour chart that works with javascript that I

the colours and the whole text on the page (or in your case I guess just the
news events) changes colour, click on the colour and it changes the page
colour... You may be able to "adapt it"

RE: Release Database

2002-02-07 Thread James Maltby

You need to do one of two things:

1) go the cfadmin and to the ODBC connection to your database (Access I am
guessing) then turn off the "keep connections alive" until you are ready to
go live with the whole thing.

2) copy the db, paste the copy and append a "_a" or whatever to the end -
then go to the cfadmin (as above) and append the "_a" to the end of the
path, wait for a while then work on the "old" version, then when you are
ready swap them back...

No, normal browsers don't support WML. (WAP is the transport protocol

not
the language; WAP is to WML what HTTP is to HTML, to slightly

RE: New Kind of Error

Could be - we've built the site and uploaded via VPN to the client's
dev.
server - they have then synced the site up with their load-balanced
front
servers - it all worked this morning and now it does not - however the
pages
work on our server and their dev. server

I've seen this one when an FTP fails part way through the upload -

Hi

I want to include footer at end of each page. Basically it is link to
Feedback for that page. Can someone suggest how to do that. Application is
developed using Fusebox 3 methodology with nested circuits. I am told that
like application.cfm (which is executed before parsing page), there is file
which is executed after parsing page. But I dont know name of file. I'll
highly appreciate any advice.

RE: Oracle and CF

2001-11-30 Thread James Maltby

Hiya - not blanking you - but went home after my last post yesterday (UK
time) - CF runs fine on *nix - we've got a few installs running on Solaris
and Redhat (CF 4.0, 4.5 and 5) - as far as Compac True 64 Unix - it no worky
as CF can only go on NT,2000,Linux,Solaris 2.6,7,8 and HP-UX 11.0 as far as
I know...

Key things to watch for are ODBC native drivers not working for v5.x as they
did for v4.x on professional version, CF logging into Oracle with the right
credentials and NOT trying to run JRUN on the same server... got to look out
for the usual *nix file naming conventions, but apart from that v. stable
and happy.

BTW - how does cf run on *nix. I've yet to venture that direction, but I
have to soon. Does CF run on True64? What should I watch for?

You don't have to add the schema to the tables if you are the owner of the
tables. Besides, schema dot, as you call it, is common and proper SQL for
higher level RDBMS. You can't call it a problem. Perhaps you're comparing
Oracle to Access or something - as for autonumbering, you simply create a
sequencing table and reference it in your SQL INSERT statement. Very
simple.

Why not write your own?

All you need is the following pages/database:
Back-end:
1. Database with - id/email/name/message/senderemail/sendername/pic_id

View:
2. View page - which is "populated" by a cfquery to database

Choose/Send:
3. Page 1 - choose image - thumbnails of card/s - when thumbnails clicked on
they lead to...
4. Page 2 - write message - basic form with to, email, from, email, message
- in a form - "view" button links to...
5. Page 3 - check page - "layout" view of card with either "change" which
lead back to Page 2 or "send" which leads to...
6. Page 4 - complete page which 1. writes to database, 2. collects id number
of entry, 3. cfmails recipient (to) with "copy" (e.g. you have been sent a
webcard - check it out at: http://www.wisernet.com/view.cfm?id=1234 - which

RE: problem with images

2001-09-14 Thread James Maltby

Had a similar problem with cfx_graph recently - got round it by using a java
ap instead, but did look into the problem - sometimes the server will "lock"
a file/s in a queue - I created a tool that created a new "graph" based on
variables then updated this as and when, but when you went back to change
the variables it deleted the old graphs - this would work 3 times out of 4,
but the 4th would throw an error and all we could do was "wait". The two
solutions we came up with (until using a dynamic java ap instead) was:
1) schedule a cleanup.cfm page to run at night that cleans the temp image
folder of all images created during the day.
2) create a log-out sub-routine or session-end sub-routine that
moves/deletes the temp files.
If you want to create a unique user id every time try using the
#GetTickCount()# function that creates a microseconds number that will make
each file unique

I don't think that many people saw this since I sent it shortly before
the tragedy on Tuesday, so I think I'll try once more.

I'm creating an image using cfx_image and letting the user preview
what the image looks like. Then if they want to make changes, I have
a form on the page which allows them to do this.

My problem: When I show the user the image it causes a problem when I
try to write to the image using cfx_image. I have tried writing it to
a temp image, deleting the original and renaming the new, but it then
has trouble deleting the old one. I think it's a similar problem to
locking an Access DB.

My question: Is there a way to make the server release the image?

Thanks.

RE: Message Board Threads confusion

2001-09-07 Thread James Maltby

Hi - you need to get your head around topics, threads and posts matey

Topics are the top level - e.g. ColdFusion.
Threads are the conversations - e.g. Writing a message board in ColdFusion
Posts are the messages based around the thread - e.g. Message Board Thread
confusion

If you ID the topic - e.g. T1
Then ID the Thread - e.g. TH1
Then ID the Posts - e.g. P1

You can create a unique key for each post - e.g. T1Th1P1
Then you can create an mapping to each post - e.g. T1Th1P2 - is in the same
topic and thread as T1Th1P1

So, in answer to your question - each person who responds to TH1 IS in the
same thread, but there subject posts should be grouped by P1, P2, P3, etc...

I think!!! :)

hey guys i wanna build a message board, but am having difficulty with the
concept of threads. Let's say there is a message, and 10 people respond to
that same message. Are those ten people in the same thread? or not? But
let's say that person B replied a message From person A, then person C
replied to person B, then D to C, and so on. Is that considered a thread?
What if person X Y and J responding individually to person C's message.
does that mean A,C,B,X,Y, and J are all in the same thread? confusing!!!

What type of field is Venue_City_ID?

Subject: brain far

Question,

I am having a brain fart. I am entering information into a database, and one
of the fields takes in a comma separated list. The insert query is;

 INSERT INTO Coupon (Vendor_ID, C_Title, C_Details, C_Inst, C_Valid,
C_Office, Venue_City_ID)
 Values (#qGetLastID.LastID#, '#Form.C_Title#', '#Form.C_Details#',
'#Form.C_Inst#', '#Form.C_Valid#', '#Form.C_Office#', '#Form.Venue#'

The Venue_City_ID is the comma separated list. The field in the DB is a text
field (SQL Server 7). When I view the output, I get something like '3,4,5'.
I would think that this would be OK since everything is inside of single
quotes. However, I am receiving errors.

ODBC Error Code = 37000 (Syntax error or access violation)

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Line 2: Incorrect syntax near
'3,4,5'.

SQL = "INSERT INTO Coupon (Vendor_ID, C_Title, C_Details, C_Inst, C_Valid,
C_Office, Venue_City_ID) Values (12, 'Ski Time', 'Test', 'Test', 'Test',
'Test', '3,4,5'"

I know that there is a simple solution, but it really escapes me. This is
what happens when you have 5 projects all going at once.

RE: Urgent ! CFHTTP ....Connection Failed

2001-08-07 Thread James Maltby

Jamie - we are working on an out-of-the-box custom tag application that you
could just plug-in to your website (using CF) with a subscription to an SMS
service centre (it will cost to send per message). If you are interested we
could organise a "beta" test for you...

Also, I know that Singapore has very strict interenet access laws enforced
(which may involve the removal of cfhttp???) - the connection failed message
could be due to one of three things - your service provider, the singtel
service provider, the above SG restrictions - la!

Have you tried to connect to a different page to see if it's the code or the
middle-ware?

RE: http server for windoz ME?

2001-07-23 Thread James Maltby

The short trick is to only install the "other" services, reboot, then
install the PWS part of the install - alternately install apache - this is
stable and much better than PWS on ME - we've got five ME dev. boxes here,
with only 1 running PWS - and it's not happy - the other 4 all run apache as
expected.

There is a way to Install PWS on ME, I did it when ME first was released
because my new laptop came with it. I have since switched to Win2K Pro,
thank god. Anyway, you have to jump through a lot of hoops to install it,
and it may not work correctly. There was a step by step walk through
somewhere on Microsoft's website, I don't have the exact URL.

RE: PWS on ME

2001-07-23 Thread James Maltby

coming in on the end of this thread here, but it is possible to run PWS on
Win ME (after spending over 8 hours researching and installing the thing!)
The best scenario for this is to have CF and PWS on win 98 and "upgrade" to
ME - which then seems to run OK - if you have to start from scratch then
there are a couple of updates to the PWS install you have to get to make it
run OK - with the correct procedure it will take you a good 1 to 2 hours to
install it properly! The best "get-around" is to install the other services
first ONLY, then re-boot and install the PWS server, ect, THEN reboot and
install CF server.

Alternately - depending on whether you want to run ASP and CFM or not - use
apache - which is v. stable on ME.

Either way, if you need further help then email me off list.

Funny, I used to think too that PWS and Windows ME were incompatible, and
it might have been from this list that I got that impression. Then I
bought a used laptop (ThinkPad 560X) with both installed and working fine
together. I added CF and it runs great too. Maybe there's some special
trick to it.

I used to work for a company that asked "Which was the greatest band, the

bad ;)

On a more serios note - I guess it all depends on what you are trying to
ascertain. The q's in the books are very similar to the ones asked on the
certification test. They are designed to catch you out and make you reas
the question very carefully. this isn't necessarily what you are after, I
found it was better in some cases to write your own very clear, perhaps more
complex, questions about the areas of CF you tend to use the most in house.

RE: CF 4.5 and SourceSafe

2001-07-16 Thread James Maltby

Yup - knew that :)

What I meant to imply was if Percy is using VSS within a development
environment (using the "roll-back" ideology) purely to protect his build
from external/part-time developers coming in and changing code (i.e.
breaking it) - it may be easier to implement the working build practice of
fusebox instead. And instead of "breaking" development work and having to
"roll-back" to previous working versions - if he developed a "working"
version of something he could re-use that code (aka fusebox).

However, implementing VSS from scratch really depends on the development
environment that Percy uses - if he already has a "dev" intranet site (for
example) and his designers/developers are using this to build sites within
then implementing VSS on top of that platform would mean a HUGE change of
developmental practice, such as checking out versions of files for either
local station development then checking them back in after working on them,
or replacing his "dev" infra-structure with the lockable source safe/project
scenario.

If he's thinking of using VSS in the above light, it may be better (less
money/working practice changes) to simply use a fusebox approach to
development, combined with the use of projects within studio and back-ups of
working folders - just a suggestion anyway...

but, of course, being the lazy sod that I am I simply wrote 'instead'... ;)

Of course, you relise that fusebox is an application building methodology,
and source safe is a way to protect you files, and therefore, 'instead'
doesn't apply ?

to use something like (Hal forgive me!) fusebox instead - aarg! ;-)

RE: ## Verity not finding .pdf docs

2001-06-12 Thread James Maltby

A couple of dump questions here

1) are there any .pdfs on the server (I know - wait) within the path of
the collection?
2) are the .pdfs locked in anyway (i.e. are you using security on them?)
3) what version of adobe are you using to create the pdfs?
4) how many files (guestimate) are their in your complete collection/s?

Howdy all!

Anyone out there had much experience with Verity?

I have finally gotten a search page to query five tables and five normal
collections simultaneously. Everything seems to be working except I
suddenly
realized the .pdf files are not being found.

I am aware that CF 4.5.1 on Unix lacks some filter - but I am running it on
NT.

Yes, the .pdf extension is in the CFINDEX tab.

Not finding anything though...

RE: Write your own DSN

2001-06-12 Thread James Maltby

I agree with hatton there tristram - sounds like a whole lotta pain to go
through to get a simple dsn connection - the easiest approach would be to
wait until they upgrade to CF5 - or find an ASP who will allow connections.
Depending on the size of your site/application it may be worth going for
co-location or dedicated server space then d.i.y the whole thing - can't
help on the script/batch approach meself btw.

If I remember correctly there is a way using the CFRegistry tag to set up
DSN's, but I'd personally be very leery of any company that doesn't want to
take a few minutes and set up a DSN.

Just my two cents.

RE: Fusebox

2001-06-12 Thread James Maltby

IMHO - there are two schools of thought on Fusebox - those that use it and
those that don't. I know from experience that CFers who have had
scripting/programming backgrounds tend to take to it more than those who
have coding/no background. It's a working practice methodology and as such
can be helpful if you use a lot of coders on the same projects or your staff
has a high turn-around. We have over 10 Cfers in-house here and we do not
use Fusebox - mainly because it's a working practice that would disrupt the
way the majority of our staff work - however it's a way of reusing code (a
write-once use anywhere approach to CF - a little "OO"). At the end of the
day it's a matter of opinion - those who use LOVE it, those who don't LIVE
anyway!

RE: Your site's easy to navigate? You Think so?

2001-06-04 Thread James Maltby

Kola, as I said earlier - the quickest short cut to this is to download Lynx
(text only flavour browser) (http://lynx.browser.org/) - as this will act as
a "text" reader (which is how voice browsers work in effect - they usaully
read out from top let across the page to top right, then down a line, etc) -
if you can navigate a website with Lynx (which is free) then a voice browser
*should* work too - if you can't navigate a site with Lynx then a voice
browser will DEFINATELY not work. Which is a starting point. Secondly, if
it "works" on Lynx then run bobby over it to generate a report that will
give you errors in order of preference. The WAI guidelines are just that -
in that they suggest a minimum methodology, but also suggest a tiered
approach to development.

If you are interested in this methodology also try doing some research on
the web about it - as a starter use something like Betsie (created back in
1998 in collaboartion between the BBC and the RNIB in the UK) which is a
free tool that creates "text" only versions of sites.

If you don't want the hassle of re-training youself or your staff into
creating hand code, etc. that is WAI compliant then use lynx - bobby -
betsie (all are free) as a road map in checking, testing, creating a text
only version of a site - then add a link to the text only version at the
top-left first code on every page of your site/s - it's a crude but working
methodology - when creating a site in CF that is template/dynamicly driven
you can also bear in mind these issues - we pull all our content in from
flat text/html formatted pages then depending on global variables set
display the text with a graphic or non-graphic wrapper.

I have just come out of a most enlightening session with a blind user,
running though a client's web site with JAWS, a screen reading program
that turns the web page into synthesised voice.

I thought I was quite aware of accessibility issues before, and was
comfortable in thinking that my sites were better than the average in
providing access to the blind and people with other disabilities. This
session was educational to say the least.

I am still convinced my sites are better than average, but I am bound to
inform you that the average is pretty damn poor. I know some people are
really concerned about accessibility for the disabled and others have
decided that the disabled are such a small portion of their userbase, it's
not worth changing everything to allow for them.

I'm here to tell you that it's not difficult to design a good site to
allow for access, it just takes a little understanding of how programs
like JAWS works. To be truthful, I think that if I were blind, I'd go
stark raving mad at all the frustrations of life but trying to surf the
web wouldn't make life any easier that's for sure.

For example, he took us through a page of our bookshop. And we'd
arranged things to look nice on the page, but there were parts of the
catalogue page where he didn't know what the "add to basket" graphic was
referring to - this book or the previous one. And some nested tables
were simply awful and impossible to work round. We all think putting
navigation buttons on the top of every page makes for easy navigation, but
blind people have to wade through (in our case) 50 navigation links before
getting to the guts of the page. On a search of our site, the resulting
page has a nice header at the top with links to all our site's catgegories
and sub-categories and then a sidebar with links to other parts of the
site, and finally the search results itself. Visually it looks fine -
quick and simple to move around the site. But using the screen reading
software it took **AGES** to get to anything related to the search. By
just laying out the page differently, we could have made this page FAR
easier to navigate for him.

I'm not suggesting we should all go about redesigning our sites just for
the relatively few blind users, but just understanding how the software
works, has made me re-think many of the forms I build. The user also
said that Government sites tended to be the worst of all. I'm not sure if
that's because they're designed by developers with an eye on the
government money or because they are specified by bureaucrats. Certainly
of all the sites that ought to know about accessibility, Government sites
ought to be the leaders, and apparently they aren't.

RE: Your site's easy to navigate? You Think so?

2001-06-04 Thread James Maltby

You should take a look at bobby and the WAI guide. Bobby is a collaboration
project between (amongst others) SUN microsystems and Microsoft (gasp!)
(http://www.cast.org/bobby/) - you can either download the java based tool
or use the website to check a website you have built for accessibility,
while the WWW Consortioum have been working on the Web Accessibility
Initiative (WAI) since the mid nineties (http://www.w3.org/WAI/) which gives
web designers guidelines as how to build sites.

The key to designing sites for accessibility is to allways offer an
alternative - in that if you have a flash site, then do it in plain html, if
you have a graph then write a description of the data on a seperate page and
add the link to it next to the image, etc. Always use alt tags and never
use frames. From the outset it can take a while to get into the working
practice of designing for accessibility, but once you take into
consideration the guide (above) and test you sites then their should not be
a problem - as a guide also get hold of Lynx the text only browser and check
you site/s on this too (for as a rule of thumb that is how voice browsers
will "read" you site) - if you can't navigate your site with Lynx then a
blind user will never be able to use you site.

a real eye-opener.

You need to add the following code to the bottom of your update page within
the pop-up child:

function closeit() {
window.opener.location="querylandname.cfm?var1=x&var2=y";
window.close();
}

Where var1=x and var2=y are your variables, or just send an id=xxx var into
the querylandname.cfm page that then loads the updated/inputed info into the

Sure - for v. big sites I have used AltaVista (www.dfee.gov.uk for example)
and this is coolio - if I was to do it again though I would probably use
Atomz.com stuff - for various reasons.

Rationale for splitting full address into 3 parts:

1) Holding one url field means that you may as well use the default verity
url param - but this does not allow for the inclusion of template page build
variables.
2) Split the url into file name and variable includes means that if you have
variable includes on a template you can include them (e.g. you have
everything in you site coming through index.cfm with a menu variable and a
content variable) - so index.cfm would default to the base menu and content,
while links from this page would include alternate menus and content - e.g.
index.cfm?menu=search&content=sitemap would use the base template, pull in
the "search" menu (with relative sub-section options) and the sitemap
content (check out www.connexionscard.gov.uk for an example of this)
3) there are some cases however when you may need a pre-variable (such as
the javascript example I gave earlier - hence the 3 way split

We are familiar with MSSQL Full Text Search, but it did not rock our
world

Key, custom1, etc is fine, but the pages/text content do not hold the
relative include variables we need when building a nested template site (see
above break-down).

sorry I can't be of more help though

My problem is that I'm already have 300mb of textual content.
The Verity Connection to CF really rocks and can help significantly in
design,
but I don't think it can handle the amount of data. Are you familier with
Microsoft
Solutions for this? (i.e MSSQL Full Text Search?)

As for your project, I don't see no reason why should you even connect to
SQL
every time to get the unique ID or anything else, why don't you use the
KEY,CUSTOM1
and CUSTOM2 fields to better process (with minmial milliseconds costs and
risk that the SQL would
be down...)

also, I don't see the real use in spliting the full address into 3 parts
(can you please exaplain
and give an example on why this is of use?)

I use verity on another site (http://www.imvamp.com) without no need to go
to the database.
ofcourse, the data was exported to sql, but only to be arranged more
efficiently into a Verity
collection. In your case of 40mb, I would consider doing the same.

Any help on MS SQL Full Text Search would be great!!!

RE: Restarting CF from Web

2001-05-15 Thread James Maltby

You can set up a "batch file" stop/start function and call it via telnet -
safer than the http version in 4

On NT the code is something like:

@echo off

echo stopping ColdFusion...
net stop "Cold Fusion Application Server"

echo restarting ColdFusion...
net start "Cold Fusion Application Server"

echo done.

Save it in a .bat file in the WinNt folder and connect via telnet to execute
it..

RE: best search

2001-05-15 Thread James Maltby

OK - verity searches *best* on text files - and I gather you will be
creating a collection of text files - but you have to consider the "display"
of the content (i.e. to send the searcher to the correct page with the
correct formatting) - what we have done historically is this five stage
process:

1) create a verity collection in the server administrator
2) write a local "indexing" page that takes the collection and compiles it
with the correct url/ path functions. (in this case we usually have our
website road mad in mind - with section1.cfm text files in section1 folder,
section2.cfm text files in section2 folder, etc.)
3) create a search assist table with the following variables in:
a) id - unique ref
b) front - any front path you may need (e.g.
"section1/section1.cfm?var=1" would be held as "section1/" here)
c) middle - the search/clipped variable - used for cross checking
with verity url results - (e.g. "section1/section1.cfm?var=1" would be
"section1" here
d) end - any end variables or includes you may need for that page
(e.g. "section1/section1.cfm?var=1 would be ".cfm?var=1" here)
e) title - title of page to show in result output
4) write a search/results page which takes the search query and passes it
through the verity collection - to bring back the #url# variable - strips
the last "4" characters and everything before the last "/" which gives you a
clipped variable - then select content from the search assist table which
holds the clipped variable in the middle column - output this result (using
the full #front##middle##end# as the path)
5) write a cfschedule that re-indexes the collection at 2am (usual down time
for server)

This above methodology allows you to (for example) use JavaScript pop-up in
your output (e.g.
href="javascript:(displayPopUp('section1/section1.htm',400,600)" where front
var = "javascript:(displayPopUp('section1/", middle var = "section1" and end
var = ".htm',400,600)", etc. - it's by no means the fastest method - as you
have to query the verity collection AND then query the sql table (use
blockfactor=100 here though) - but it's the most comprehensive if you have a
complex structure to your website - as it allows for pre/and post variables
to be added to the result url path (which other searches won't allow).

We use a similar methodology on a collection/site of 40mb and the average
results page would come back within 1265 milliseconds (which is chuggy)

In answer to your other query - yes the AltaVista is a server based search.

This is probarbly the best sentence I've heard this week! (come to think of
it, it's only monday.. :)
I asked for help and got it, but actually more questions arises, I'll try to
describe them:

1. the content would be txt and pure ASCII text only! actually I just
finished the mechanisem
which takes the html files from all of the sites I want to search in and
then remove
all html tags/javascript codes and stuff.

2. how much is considered BIG in the "lite" version of verity? 100mb, 200mb
of content?
that's about the amount I have.

3. verity would be great for me to display the data more efficient along
with CF tags. I know
CF, I know verity is easy to use, but I know they MUST be slower then
Microsoft Solutions.
(BTW: IS THERE ANY DIFFRENCE?, MS Search =SQL Full text?)

what will be the best way to go if:
I want the search to be as fast as possible YET:
1. I need an easy way to get the results to good-looking HTML format.
2. and maybe an easy way to still incorporate CF tags.

my database design is as follows:
uID = url ID
uLINK = full url location (i.e http://www.cftalk.com/whatis/cf.html)
uCONTENT = txt content I fetched from the site earlier?

do I actually need to save this data in tables or can I just search directly
on the txt files?

And final note: you mentioned Altavista engine - do they offer server search
engines too?

Thanks alot guys!! you'll be the first to run the search queries on my
engine :)

RE: best search

2001-05-14 Thread James Maltby

It really depends on how your content is being displayed - if it's flat-file
then Verity is OK - if it's a combination of SQL and Verity then pass your
query through both database and verity, if it's all sql held then rely on
sql/verity collections (faster than plain sql requests), however database
searches will depend on how often the data is to be updated. A quick rule
we use for template based sites is verity index the flat file content, then
build a "link" database with file names and page titles in which is used to
display the url links to the content (your option 2).

However, saying the above the main downfall of Verity is that it takes a
f*** load of time to index large amount of pages and the collections can
become corrupt - so it may be worthwhile using something else completely
different (AltaVista supply a free search engine as do Lycos and Atomz).
What you have to remember is Verity with CF is a "lite" version and as such
is not too hot on larger sites.

As a rule of thumb "use the right tool for the job", don't just use a tool
because it is there.

I have a query that can return several thousand records. When I run a query
that only returns a small number ( lets say 15 or so, which is what I have
seen), the page behaves fine, displays fine, etc. HOWEVER if I return a
large number of records (1020, which is what I have seen), there is a huge
amount of white space (like 2 page down's worth on a 1024 X 768 resolution)
displayed before the table of results... in effect, making it look as if
there was nothing returned, and all there is showing initially is the page
header graphics. I've made sure everything that can be set to 0 is
(margins, cellpadding, etc.) and that all the table elements are valigned
to TOP... any other suggestions?

RE: New CF5 Partner Hosting License

2001-04-27 Thread James Maltby

Well, personally I get a feeling that this is the first nail in the coffin
of CF Application Server - see the logic - increase the price to push it up
to be in the same league as Broadvision and Vignette - drop spectra as the
webtop never worked - over price the "back end" middle ware and wait and see
if large companies buy it - in the meantime develop jrun to act as CF
Application Server - if CF 5 at new price fails - drop it like spectra and
release jrun CF at slightly increased prices to old CF Enterprise - get us
all to use that instead - etc, etc, - I'm off to buy a PHP book.

Yes - having been in the Internet industry in Britain ever since there was
one -
I founded one of the first fully national ISP's - I can certainly endorse
the
comments of Aidan.

What few hosting companies that have been willing hitherto to support Cold
Fusion will surely do so no longer if the new pricing schema is at it would
appear to be.

Service providers of all types are used to getting things for free - Linux,
Apache, Sendmail etc.., and premium charges for CF are hardly going to
encourage
service providers in general to consider actually paying for a server side
application.

I have to say - this is extremely myopic of Macromedia (subject to seeing
the
full details) - it will push developers who may have been waivering to
ASP/PHP
etc., and other free middleware.

I still firmly believe that the best strategy would be to make CF Server
free,
and focus on marketing development tools to a much wider audience as a
result.

I think the Netscape browser is a good parallel - they had to make it free
and
open source to encourage people to use the portal. No one will pay for
browsers
anymore than they will for expensive middleware, when the alternatives are
free
and widely supported.

Adrian Cooper.

RE: hosting

2001-04-26 Thread James Maltby

It's very much up to the individual company - how do you want to set the
server up? How much space allocation are you going to offer? What kind of
support are you going to give? Can you/your server provider offer 99% up
time? Do you want to offer mail? If so should you get a dedicated
mail/chat server too? Are you going to hire support/telephone staff to
assist users? Does everyone get a ftp account? Stats server?
Limited/monitored IP/bandwidth? Will you offer database connectivity at
cost or extra? After about 100 to 200 mb server space do you want to advise
the client/s to rent their own server? The list goes on, but do some
research around the industry - we thought that our prices where competitive,
but when we did research we realised that we were Vastly overcharging for
smaller spaces, also we host some of our NZ clients and they expect to pay
no more that $100 NZ per year for a 10mb site WITH coldfusion and SQL
support and connectivity - best thing to do is to do some of your own
research - go to Allaire.com - find hosting partners - contact them about
hiring space/renting whole servers, etc and go global - UK is a one site
high rate market - US is a multi-server farm huge power low cost market -
NZ/OZ is a one site/server low money market etc, etc.

I understand how to use javascript in CF and how to call a stored prcedure

from the SQL Server but how or even can you embed java code into my CF
application. I guess I am trying to find out if there is coding that you do

outside
of the
code that you embed in a page? in other words, do you create components
on
the server that the code inside the pages talk to?

Hope this makes sense..

TIA,

Julie
