cfdocument and flashpaper (link to flash if not installed)

2010-09-08 Thread Richard White

Hi,

I am using cfdocument with format flashpaper. however, if users do not have
flash installed instead of informing them of this and providing them with a
link to download flash, the system is showing the download window.

is there anyway to inform the user of this problem and provide them with a link
to the flash download page?

thanks

Re: FlashPaper

2009-11-02 Thread Stefan Richter

This topic opens a can of worms...

AFAIK FlashPaper is essentially a virtual printer, and the same as
Print2Flash (the company behind P2F is the same one that invented
FlashPaper and sold it to Macromedia). I'm not sure which version of
P2F you used but again AFAIK it will queue printjobs just fine - it
'prints' to a file after all, just like a normal printer would to paper.
Both apps wrap the SWFs into a viewer which was not ideal for my
requirements - it may be for yours. How are you using the SWFs? What
formats do you need to ingest?

Have you considered converting to images? That's what I'm doing now.
Ok, you lose some of the vector niceness but at least the output
format is something that can be wrapped into a nice custom SWF viewer,
or delivered directly as images. I should be able to show you some
examples in a few weeks when this project nears its end. The backend
is all CF9 but with various other tools alongside.

If you do want to go down the P2F route then feel free to contact me
off list. I've hired Blue Pacific (the company behind P2F) to build me
custom P2F version which can output single SWFs (one SWF per document
page) as well as images. Maybe it'll fit your needs.

However it sounds that you want to scale larger than that, so a
virtual printer using Office to print from may not be great. I also
tested CF9s capabilities in this area and was less than impressed -
PPT to PDF conversion results were not very good at all. same goes for
OpenOffice. You may need to check out tools such as Aspose to do your
conversion. Be warned, every conversion tool I have come across has
some downsides, but Aspose seems to have the least (its price is one
of them though :)...

Cheers

Stefan

FlashPaper

2009-11-02 Thread Brian Peddle

Does the output of FlashPaper in Coldfusion end up using the Print
driver? I need to create a service to accept a word doc or pdf and have
it converted to a swf. It needs to be able to handle decent load so
trying to figure out if it will
create a new thread and handle multiple requests at once or will it
queue up the conversion.

Scribd would have been a great choice but we need to store the SWF on
our servers based on requirements. Print2Flash can only handle 1
request at a time and it can't queue.

I am also open to other solutions I may not know about it if CF can't
handle it.

Thanks!

Flashpaper and Forms Submission

2009-02-19 Thread Dean Ernst

Hi All,

Is is technically possible to have some sort of conversion process that
converts existing form documents (word & PDF froms)to a flashpaper format
(ie retaining all the formating and branding of the document), while
allowing (or adding) the ability to send the form results to either a DB or
to a PDF file through the flashpaper file?

I basically want to be able to have the embed ability and format retention
of flashpaper, while allowing form fields to be sumbitted from this
flashpaper document.

Your thoughts?

Cheers

Dean

Re: CF8 Bug? CFReport / Flashpaper

2008-09-10 Thread Marcus Raphelt
Hi Brad,

the HTML file appeared to me as if CF was recreating the report using
1x1-Pixel-TDs, i can post an extract of it tomorrow.
If the temp files in /tmp don't contain too much binary junk (I didn't
look into them yet), I'll post an extract of one of them, too.

Could it be that CF works internally that way - generating HTML and
converting it to SWF afterwards? That'd be weird. ;-)

Wow, that's a lot of data. I'm curious if you look in the temp file while
creating the HTML version what you would see.

It sounds like and endless loop or something.

Again, I think getting a stack trace here is key to figuring out what is
going on.

Can you post the code somewhere to reproduce this issue. Some of us might
poke around at it, if we can get the same thing to happen on our server.

Hi all,

update:
While generating the report as a flashpaper, I noticed that the CPU wait
time rises up and waves around 90%.
The reason for this is that CF fills up /tmp with about 20GB (yes,
gigabytes) of temporary files... what the hell is it doing there?

I also had the idea to generate the report in HTML format and convert it
to SWF via cfdocument. The resulting HTML file is extremely large, I
stopped the request as it reached 5GB (yes, gigabytes again).
Any ideas, anyone? ;-)

It looks like you need to find out what your server is doing during those 10
minutes. I would recommend installing SeeFusion or Fusion-Reactor and start
looking at the stack trace while it is processing. If there is no CPU
usage, it might be getting hung on an image, query, or basically any code
that requires blocking for an external resource.

Also, if you post this over to the Adobe forums you *might* catch the
attention of someone from Adobe to help you or at least confirm if it is a
bug.

CF8 Bug? CFReport / Flashpaper

2008-09-09 Thread Marcus Raphelt
Hi List,

I posted the message "CF7 ENT => CF8, CFReport Font size issues" a few
days ago, I'm pretty sure now that this is a bug in CF8, more details on
this:

The source report is a pretty complex (as far as the layout is
concerned) one-page report with some calculated fields that are fed by a
cfquery. It was originally created using the CF7 Report Builder.
To be able to reproduce CF8's behaviour, I set up a really small cfm
page that calls the report like this:

PDF result
Flash result

When I start this template, the following happens:

* The PDF file takes about 3s to render (about 5 pages containing a
bunch of calculated fields, query results etc.) and is instantly
written to disk. The layout is *mostly* correct - I'd say 98% -
and personally, I could live with that.
* The SWF file is created, has 0 bytes at first and takes about
10mins (!) if the report contains the font "Arial Unicode MS".
During these 10mins, the cf process does not even eat cpu - it
seems as if it waits for something. If at least the result was
correct - no, it isn't. Almost all labels are way too big and the
  layout is messed up.

I tried the following:

* Symlinking ARIALUNI.TTF to other non-unicode fonts
SWF is created as fast as the PDF, but layout is still broken.
* Opening and re-saving the report in CF8's Report Builder
  No change

When I run the same template in CF7 on the same machine using all the
same settings, same browser, same fonts, same weather, same coffee...
both the PDF and SWF reports are rendered as expected. CF7 even swallows
the report saved with the CF8 report builder and has no problems working
with Arial Unicode MS... *sigh*

The problem is: the customer is running a Flex2 app that displays the
SWF report inline, and as they are using rather small thin clients,
switching to PDFs is not really an option. Additionally, there's not
only THIS report, but about 100, all of them show the same behaviour.

To sum it up:

CF7, PDF: works
CF7, SWF: works
CF8, PDF: works, small layout issues
CF8, SWF: fails

Has anyone of you run into similar issues yet?

System: SLES10, 32bit, Apache2, CF7 / CF8

Troubleshooting cfdocument format="FlashPaper"

2008-05-20 Thread Adrian Lynch
Hey all, I've not touched in a while.

I'm getting a blank screen for Flash, but PDF works.

Any pointers as to what might be causing this?

I started with this:

As basic as it gets!

and have tried adding cfabort and cfcontent to clear the output before (I
know this isn't needed, but I had to try).

I've also added cfide as a virtual directory to the site in case that was
the problem but no joy.

I'm running CF8 with IIS5.

Thanks.

cfmenu menus disappear behind flashpaper

2008-04-17 Thread Nathan Smith
I have a very simple page that I am using both cfmenu and flashpaper on. The
flashpaper starts about 1/4 of a way down the page and really long cfmenu items
disappear behind the flashpaper.

I don't know much about CSS and even less about flash, but does flash and by
extension should flash paper run at the same layer that everything else on the
page does?

Has anyone seen this issue before, any idea of ways around it? Are there
different versions of flashpaper? I think my flashpaper SWFs were mostly
produced with an early version that come out with the first contribute.

Thanks.

-Nate

Changing Hyperlink Target in PDF or FlashPaper

2007-12-02 Thread Matt Lerwill
I'd like to add a link to a Report Builder report and when I set it up it works
great, but it uses the same window to open the link.

Does anyone know the trick to have it open a new window when click on a link
(similar to "_blank").

In Report Builder, within the properties window, the only two options I have
are "self" or "no image" and both open in the same page.

Thanks,

Matt

Is there a way to convert those PDFs on the fly to Flashpaper, and
allow me to use the flashpaper embed object on a page?

I can easily do it with html content (thanks to Terry Ryan), but would

Converting a PDF to FlashPaper using CF MX

2007-07-27 Thread James Wolfe
I know that CF (especially CF8) can interact with PDF docs. I know that CF
(even MX7) can produce flashpaper documents. If a user uploads one, can CF
convert to the other (PDF->FP or vice versa)?

I saw the ANT script that runs at the command prompt that will do this en
masse, but that seems like it would only help me if I have CFExecute available
to me (which I do not) or I could set up scheduled windows tasks (which I
cannot). Is it possible to use the native CF tie-in (that currently works to
produce FlashPaper) to convert a PDF into FlashPaper?

Thanks in advance.

The hugh advantage to flashpaper is the almost instantanious
rendering. The disadvantage is that small fonts appear overly
anti-aliased. I had a client who wanted to use it but we couldn't
solve the font problem. It reminded me of the early days of PDFs,
when fonts were fuzzy. If you stick to large fonts, the rendering
looks great.

Damon, are small fonts crisper in Flashpaper rendered with Player 9 ?

Re: FlashPaper vs PDF

2006-10-05 Thread dcooper
Actuall, JD, ColdFusion dynamically generates both PDF and FlashPaper SWF
output for CF reports and CFDOCUMENT (and reports also outputs Excel and RTF,
etc as well).

While you are correct that the "FlashPaper" product used a printer-driver
technology, we chose a different route that yields super-high quality fonts,
etc natively as a Flex app would, directly aseembling the documents ourselves,
without using the proiblematic "printer driver" approach.

The FlashPaper 2 output you get as a result (espcially with the latest
FlashPlayer 9 player) is very, very, good and very lightweight.

Macromedia FlashPaper was a printer driver which could turn documents
(including PDF) to SWF. The document would display in a Macromedia shell
SWF with viewing chrome. I haven't heard of any news with FlashPaper
since the Adobe acquisition.

For forms, though, Adobe Reader is much stronger. FlashPaper treats
something as a document, but Acrobat offers significant forms technology.

One wrinkle here is that Adobe Reader 8.0, announced last week and in
public release this autumn, can archive filled forms to local storage.
Previous versions of Reader could let you fill and submit forms for
remote storage, but the 8.0 client adds local archiving.

> Are there any known stats for percent users with Adobe Reader vs
> MacrAdobe Flash installed ?

Adobe Flash Player is by far the world's most widely-deployed
software... the new Flash Player 9 is looking to have been adopted by
about 50% of internet consumers within three months of its release,
which is almost an incomprehensible rate of adoption.
http://blog.digitalbackcountry.com/?p=498

While Macromedia commissioned NPD consumer audits and did
version-tracking, Adobe did not, and so we don't have good
version-to-version stats for Adobe Reader yet. Reader and Acrobat have
had a bit more corporate acceptance than Player has had, though... both
are de facto standards in the world today.

That's true. But Adobe Reader is actually more of a collaboration client
than it is a simple document viewer. Here's the 7.0 Reader FAQ and

The size of the PDF viewer plugin has bothered me in the past. To me a
viewer should be lightweight and simple. I shouldn't have to ask my
dial-up users to wait 3 hours to view a PDF file.

Flash has limited string manipulation strengths and even less for encoded
data. I think it would be quite a stretch to pull all the features from one
plugin into another without a lot of bloat.

I recomend pdf if the main pourpuse is to print the document.

I recomend FlashPaper when you want to display the document in the

Depends who your average users are, but yeah, it's certainly nice to be able to
know the differences so you can write a short explanation.

Unfortunately I don't know enough to fairly compare them, but the overview
pages are probably good places to start with:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashpaper/productinfo/overview/
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/adobepdf.html

(along with waiting for more opinions from here, obviously)

Flash adoption is almost certainly higher. Unfortunately, I haven't found a
good source for PDF availability statistics.

That's correct. However, it's just a SWF, so a user can save it like they
would any other SWF.

I would recommend PDF for forms. It has lots of potentially useful options -
automatic submission via HTTP or email, digital signatures, etc.

Actually, I suspect that FlashPaper will be around for a while at least.
It's quite useful in some niches where PDF is not (yet), and it's not a
serious competitor to PDF outside of those niches.

Load Flashpaper in a cfform format = flash

2005-08-15 Thread David Brown
I have the flash paper loading fine. I am using the I am calling a remote service to create the flash
paper and save it as test.swf in the current folder of the flash form. But the
flash paper only loads at forms first load. I would like to click a button and
have it get the latest test.swf.

In a cfgrid the user will select row and then click a preview button that calls
the cfc that runs a query to get the data to create the flash paper. Then
write the new flash paper with updated data from the query. I then want the
flash paper in the form to refresh and load the same file name, but with the
new data in it.

Any ideas?

Thanks

That's an interesting problem... the FlashPaper effort has been focused
on providing officeworkers an easy way to get office documents onto
webpages, and it's not really very functional as a data-transfer format.

If someone starts with "MS Access-style reports" and ends up with
"FlashPaper" but you actually need the data, then the first thing I'd
wonder about would be whether they could do an Export from MS Access in
a format you prefer, rather than going "Print" and then choosing
"FlashPaper" as the output format.

But if the "FlashPaper" part of that problem is a given -- if there's no
way to use an actual data-exchange format instead -- then there are
indeed utilities to extract text and other info from a compiled SWF
file. Most of these are intended as develop-time tools rather than
serving-time tools, however, so it might take some experimentation to
find a good workflow.

When I check the serverside offerings at swftools.com, I see mostly
SWF-creation tools rather than SWF-cracking tools for the server:
http://www.swftools.com/tools-category.php?cat=720

Maybe one of the develop-time SWF extracters/decompilers can be
automated for server use...?

SWF parsing isn't as easy as you'd think. Most of the packages are limited
at best and fail depending on how the report was generated.

Heres a free utility that helps with low-level flash development.

Folks,

Is there any straightforward way to parse the Flashpaper 2 swf file to
extract the data in a more usable format? I'm receiving reports (think
MS Access-style reports) in that format and don't have any experience
with it.

To further complicate things, this isn't a CF project -- but would
prefer a Java solution. I tried http://www.anotherbigidea.com/javaswf/
which could parse out some information, but I didn't get any useful
text. It looks like the Perl SWF:Parser package might be an
alternative as well.

Anyone have suggestions about getting the text out of the file?

Generating FlashPaper from PDF?

2005-03-29 Thread Kevin Graeme
Is there a way to generate FlashPaper from PDF at the server? To make it
easier, the app is a simple content repository that lets people upload their
PDF so the conversion could take place once when saving the files instead of
trying to do it dynamically on every output.

To make it a little harder, this is on linux.

Re: Anyone creating CF7 flashpaper reports outside of report builder?

2005-03-14 Thread Rick Mason
Don,

The reports are stored in an XML file which was encrypted for your
protection:<)! Which at times makes debugging a bit more of a
challenge.

Anyone creating CF7 flashpaper reports outside of report builder?

2005-03-14 Thread Don Smith
I don't know why I thought that the coldfusion reports were being stored
in an xml and xslt file- apparently I'm nuts. I tested out report
builder and the report metadata is stored in the.cfr file which is
pretty much encrypted and not easily database-enabled. You want to
build a new report? Fire up the client server app. I have a data
structure for our reports already spec'd out and I wanted to take that
info and export it to flashpaper. Is anyone doing this currently,
outside of Report Builder?

I think I'm missing something obvious...

Thanks,

Don

Yes, CFMX 7 can generate a report to a file in PDF or flashpaper.

I would like to create "self-contained" flashpaper
reports to distribute via email to managers in our
organization. Is it possible to load the report
with query data and then save the report to
file? What would be even more beneficial is
to have drill down capabilities in the report..
self contained of course.

Is this possible with CFMX7 ?

Thanks

RE: OT: Flashpaper

2004-11-30 Thread Robertson-Ravo, Neil (RX)
Hey,

Well I am having some good success with Flashpaper and calling it via
ColdFusion BUT the problem I have is this: when you convert an HTM or HTML
page it always comes up with the damn printing dialog box which the user has
to select - which makes no sense as when you convert a .doc it does it
automatically. I have placed a call with MM to see what the scoop is on
thisas it would seem to be a bug.

I haven't tried Martin's tag, but I can tell you from
using the free tag "CF_HTML2PDF3" that also relies on
HTMLdoc to convert to pdf's that its not quite
perfect. Unfortunately, I can't use FOP because I am
on ColdFusion 5 for the server where this is needed.
It looks like FOP would be a better alternative if I
were able to use that one.

I would really love to see a flashpaper plugin too.
That would be very welcomed.

And yeah, it's very good at at it. Bit more work involved than say
Blackstone will require but it doesn't cost a penny.

There was a couple of articles on using CFMX and FOP in the CFDJ
earlier this year too.

flashpaper printing

2004-11-09 Thread Rick Root
While at the MAX conference, I spoke to a support engineer about the
print problems with flashpaper. It was also brought up in our "Get
Ready for Blackstone" session. Nobody at Macromedia seemed to be like
"Yeah we know that's a problem"

Let's tell them.

The support person suggested sending email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to "suggest" that they speed up the
printing, and the more requests they get, the more the issue will be
noticed.

I just sent my request. If you think flashpaper printing is slow, send
one yourself. Let's use the power of community to enact some change!

Flashpaper is a cool product, but if my users can't print a four page
document in under 30 minutes, I won't be using it.

Flash Paper has the potential of being very cool if the following is

  1. Be able to download the SWF.

  2. API for creating FP docs programmatically.

PDF's in a browser suck!RE: Re: Flashpaper Macromedia - Please

2004-01-15 Thread Mike Brunt
I agree that Flashpaper can be improved upon and there are good suggestions here for that. But here is a reality, even with a high-speed connection PDF's in a web browser are dog slow and I for one am sick and tired of being forced to wait for PDF's to the extent that I avoid them whenever possible.

Once again Macromedia thanks for listening.

Kind Regards - Mike Brunt

Sure, but since we are evaluating two potential solutions (Acrobat vs
Flashpaper) the fact I have to look into my cache is so annoying that,
alone, make me vote for Acrobat. Just a personal opinion, nothing more,
nothing less.

Whatever make super easy to get the file and save it on my hard-disk would
be fine for me.

Things can be hacked into FP. These suggestions are ideas for a new
release of FP. FP is a printer driver, but my idea for it is to be a
stand-alone product along with the printer driver.

and for now if saving is that big of deal you can always get flash

one other pro, IMO, is the ability to display inline.  sure, you can do this
with PDF and an iframe...but having the capability built in natively is
nice.

not being able to save to my local computer, in any format (be it swf or
otherwise) is a HUGE con.

The loads fast thing is big for me (I have a P4/2.8 with a gig of memory
and I have to wait 15 seconds for the PDF plugin to load), but the can't
save is a bummer and the can't resize is a deal-breaker, though I would

alone, make me vote for Acrobat. Just a personal opinion, nothing more,
nothing less.

Whatever make super easy to get the file and save it on my hard-disk would
be fine for me.

RE: Flashpaper Macromedia - Please

2004-01-15 Thread Bryan F. Hogan
That would be great IMO.

Flash Paper has the potential of being very cool if the following is
added.

1. Be able to download the SWF.

2. API for creating FP docs programmatically.

3. Integration with CFMX, like cfchart, and cfreport.

4. Stand-Alone program outside of Contribute.

Ummm, you already did.  If you are viewing the flashpaper document you
already have the .swf loaded in your cache.  It's not an actual link to
"download the document", but it's still there.  Are you suggesting that
MM provide a link to download the swf?

You can't. Great isn't it.

Seriously, would a PDF be too much to ask ?

How do you download a FlashPaper? I can view it and I can print
it, but I can't figure out how to download it.

Thanks for the feedback.  Indeed we are.  I will pass this along.  (I'm
personally not crazy about PDFs in this particular context, either.)

Flashpaper Macromedia - Please

2003-12-24 Thread Mike Brunt
I hope someone at MM is listening.  I just tried to read ColdFusion MX 6.1
Evaluator's Guide

aluators_guide.pdf>  as a PDF file from here
http://www.macromedia.com/software/coldfusion/whitepapers/ and after the
usual painful PDF browser wait got a blank screen which appeared “frozen” in
time.  I am really tired of bloody PDF’s in a browser; they have to be one
of the worst web experiences out there, period.

So if you’re listening at MM, can please at least have the option to get PDF
’s in Flashpaper format on Macromedia’s site.  Apart from enabling site
visitors to actually efficiently read stuff it would be a great plug for
your own products.

As an experiment, we took last months PDF version of ColdFusion Developers
Journal (a 52 page behemoth) and created a Flashpaper version.  The
difference in load time in a browser is startling.  There are native
downsides to Flashpaper, no search, cannot select text etc but for simply
reading a document in a browser Flashpaper really rocks.

Oh and thanks MM for a bloody amazing year, Seasons Greetings to one and
all.

Kind Regards - Mike Brunt
