I plan on having my frame chemical dipped (you are right about the
process) and then powder coated. A local shop has quoted me $600 for
the job. The only bad thing about using POR-15 is trying to get to the
inside of the frame rails with the paint.

Why am I suspecting that most of you won't do that? But how far should

I have a couple buddies recommending that I take the body off, strip it,

Actually, you'll be surprised at how easy this is. Since you didnt say
otherwise, I'm assuming you have a column shifter. Drop the little panel
under the steering column. It should be 4 screws. Up in there, you'll see
what looks like a string that is screwed to the steering column. The other
end of it goes to the pointer (and is spring loaded to pull it towards
"Park". You should be able to loosen a screw on the column and adjust the
pointer's position. It's been a long time since I did this, so I hope I
didnt miss any details.

It sounds to me like you need to adjust the shift rod. This adjustment is
just by the steering column in the engine compartment by the firewall. The
shifter rod goes through an adjustment swivel. The swivel has a bolt that is
used to adjust the shift areas.

not a how to book.if you want a how to book look elsewhere.

Re: [Chevelle-List] HEI and resistor wire

2001-12-05 Thread Paul Hernandez

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

Well, you should be getting some type of starting problems thats if you
also eliminated the wire going from your pos. side of the coil to the
starter to give full 12.0 volts when starting your engine. If you still
have this wire linked which is stock for points equipped veh., I think your
car might be starting okay but the resister wire isnt giving you full 12.0
volts all the time after your car starts because thats when your resister
wire takes over giving you only 9.0 something volts there for killing alot
of your performance.

This is easy to do, just replace the wire with a same size or bigger direct
wire from the walL socket to the HEI. Then take off th wire going to your
coil positive side to the starter. All you should have on the starter
connected after this is the battery wire and the purple wire coming from
the wall socket directly from the wall socket.

If you bid a fair price before end of bidding I guarantee you someone will bid higher. I wait until last minute and bid the highest I am willing to pay for it. sometimes I win and sometimes I lose. When you are on rare or almost nonexcisting parts the prices can get crazy. I've seen an am-fm radio not meet reserve at 750 and then the next week one will go for 1200.  another trick i have learned is don't bid exact amounts. i will bid like $200.02 or $150.02, it is amazing how many times i have won by one or two pennies

This has nothing to do w/ Walter, but I don't like to use PayPal, mainly
because when they bill my credit card, it doesn't (or didn't the few times I
tried) reference the auction number or the name of the item on my bill. You
just see PayPal a bunch of times, and it's up to you to verify that the
charges are correct. At least with a postal money order, I know exactly what
I paid for and there is a stub I can save so I have a record for my car's
history file. I also get the protection of the US Government because I can
have the seller investigated for mail fraud of they try to rip me off (not
that that has ever happened, but it's good to know).

I didn't find the book that helpful at all.  My advice to you is to purchase "Chevrolet by the Numbers" by Alvin Colvin.  That book is a bible to make sure all the correct codes and numbers are on your machine.

Next, I would join ACES, the American Chevelle Enthusiasts Society.  Every month there are tips on how to restore your machine.  I joined I guess 3-4 years ago and spent the extra cash for all the back issues.  You may want to try that route.

Another source may be the Year One Catalog.  They are pretty good on the details and the catalog has tons of pictures you can look at.  I have dealt with them in the past (heck, I've dealt with probably ALL of them) and find them to be a pretty reputable firm.  I'd also recommend getting the Ground Up and National Parts Depot Catalogs as well.

Next, I'd stick to this list.  I'm sure you will find a number of guys in your local area that would love to share their tips with you.  GOOD LUCK!

I explained my theory about waiting until the last minute to bid on
"another" car list, and somebody wrote me saying that I am "trying to rip
off the seller." I found this to be a ridiculous statement. The same way
that a buyer shouldn't bid more than he is willing to pay, a seller
shouldn't list an item for less than what he is willing to sell it for.

Hey Cliff, I picked up a 3.5" NASCAR exhaust system, mostly for the long flat side
exhast tips. With the tubbed rear, I don't have room to run exhaust clear to the
rear bumper. bummer

Anyway, the exhaust tips look great! See them at
http://www.ProStreetCar.com/custom_exhaust.html The pics aren't great, but you'll
get the idea.

So, since I had a complete system, I thought I should use it. And I figured with
one of their quietest mufflers, I'd be ok. Another lesson for the books.I'll be
switching to 3" pipes to the muffler, and 2.5" out.

You're right, no performance reason for 3.5" pipes. It's just that I already had
them. I'll just move them over to the Camaro (drag car)

In the Chevelle, I have a 468 BB, "049" heads, 2.19/1.88 valves, mild port, 10.2:1,
.653" roller, etc. DesktopDyno claims 550hp/550ft lbs.

Hey Mike -
3.5" exhaust all the way back? No wonder they are loud! With that pipe
diameter (and a healthy motor) just about any muffler is going to be loud.
Before I went with my current full 3" system on my Chevelle, I had 3" headpipes
and 2.5" tailpipes, and I was told that changing to 3" tailpipes with the same
mufflers would result in a significant increase in volume and resonation. So,
since I didn't like the mufflers I had on there anyway (Flowmaster 30 series), I
went with the full 3" system and the big block 70 series mufflers (quietest ones
they make). Good thing I did because I can only expect the exhaust to get
louder and resonate more with my new 427 SBC. What kind of motor do you have in
there that you need a 3.5" system, anyway? A 3" system should be more than
enough for most street engines .

A follow up to my previous submission. I am honest and generally accept that
others are as well. I learned a life lesson on Ebay
Unfortunately I got screwed on a deal. I was not the high bidder on an
auction for a set of heads. After the auction the seller and I decided on a
price for him to set me up with heads ported and ready to go just as in the
auction. I sent a money order for $960.00 to cover the heads and shipping.
It has been a year and a half and you know the rest of the story..No heads..
No money Returned.
According to South Carolina BBB the company "James Williams Racing Engines"
doesn't even exist. I got screwed..what am I going to do take him to small
claims and spend $2000 doing it? I live in Ohio.

What I am saying is do it through Ebay or at least use Paypal or a payment
type that will allow you (customer) some options if things go bad.

Sorry for the rant

I got a few "nastygrams" on that too. I asked eBay about that some time
back and they actually suggested "sniping" as a legal way to bid...as long
as you didn't use any software to do the bidding for you. I keep two copies
of my browser open - one with the item and one with a potential bid. Keep
refreshing the item screen to see any last minute bids and be ready to place
a bid in the other screen. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. As
long as they have bidding that ENDS at a specific time, bidding at any time
is fair game.

Deja vu?

All of the literature dealers sell paint chip charts. For my Oldsmobiles,
the Dupont, Rinshed Mason, and PPG codes for each color are listed in the

scan a chart in the book that shows the Lucite, Rinshed-Mason (R&M), and
Ditzler stock numbers for the colors.

But it could just be somebody who really wants the item and doesn't realize
that the only bid that matters is the last one.

I know a lot of people frown on "sniper bidding" but it's the only way I buy
anything on ebay. I wait until a minute before the auction closes and if
it's still at a price I'm willing to pay, I put in a bid. I don't use any
special software and I am on a dialup connection. I have received nastygrams
from people b*tching about how they watched the item for a week and then I
took it out from under them. I simply inform them that I watched it for a
week too, and just didn't bid early because the last bid is the only one
that counts, and early bids just drive up prices.

You can order a chassis service manual from Ground-Up Restoration
(www.ss396.com) or Nat. Parts Depot(npdlink.com). You should also order a
wiring manual which isn't much money and is well worth having. Good Luck,

I have a Chassis Service Manual and a Fisher Body Manual for my Oldsmobiles.
I also have an assembly manual for my El Camino. The CSM is a "must-have" if
you do your own repairs. The other two relate more to removal & installation
of trim & body parts.

Ebay has a strict policy against this. Could it still happen... YES. Does
it happen... I would say in most cases... NO. I have purchased many items
off of Ebay. Do your homework. When I Bid, I usually know what an item is
worth... but what is more important... is what I am willing to pay for it...
even if it is MORE than it is worth. Some items you just cant get... and you
have to pay the price ... if AND only if you really want that item. If the
bid gets too high... just move on. IF you do suspect a seller bidding up
his/her item, check out the previous bids (by clicking on the link). You
wont see the price increments, but you will see their name. If you see a
bidder in there over and over and suspect that its the seller... I just
simply would not bid on the item anymore. I still believe that most people
out there are honest. knock on wood, so far I have not been ripped off,
the item(s) were delivered as promised and in the shape advertised. Now this
is not to say I wont get ripped off in the future (there are probably
hundreds of horror stories), but I am willing to take my chances.

That's my .02

I have had this same thought. If I have my info correct, this should be no
more complicated than swapping your sick salamander for a small block, but I
don't know about transmission length. Cross member location and driveshaft
length might come into play here. I think the 4.3 would be really cool for
a driver. I loved 93 S10. Go for it!

Ok guys you know that I bought my little more door for the fact that I would
get some killer gas mileage out of that little 230 straight sic and the two
speed Powerglide. I had a revelation one day while looking through an
autotrader I saw an ad for a late model S10 with a 4.3 in it the whole truck
was totaled but the people wanted $300 for it, so wheels started turning.
How bad would it be to swap over that brand new 4.3 and overdrive tranny
into that cute little 4 door? I love the 4.3 had one in a Blazer took a
lickin and kept on kickin. Its just an idea I know I would have to screw
around with the driveline and use that trucks computer and all that good
junk to run the motor. It seems it could work, what do you guys think?

I had this problem with my edel 1406  600 CFM
carb. Edelbrock told me to change the step up spring for the meter rods first.
The step up spring kit is Pt 1464??. It takes only 5 minutes to change. The
change does not require the carb to be removed. The two rod are located on top
between the front and rear bowl. One screw hold the cover on these metering
rods. This fix my problem.

The name of it is actually Rust Stop, a buddy of mine works for a nearby
city and he was using it to paint flagpoles and all that kind of crap that
you find in cities that periodically need repainted, the stuff seems to hold
really nice it is an enamel paint. You can get it from Ace Hardware and it
runs about $20 a gallon, much cheaper than POR15, like I said though I
figured I would try it on my daily beater and the 69 seeing as how both I
don't care if the stuff don't work, just thought I would try it. Although
like I have said it has held for the past few months with me driving my
truck everywhere, gravels and such seem not to bother it, I have the whole
rear section painted of the frame all around so whatever gets hit I can see
the damage, delightfully no chips or nothing.

They show up on eBay all the time. Do a search on your year car (e.g., 1967
Chevelle, or 67 Chevelle) and sort on lowest price first. Faxton Auto
Literature has them there almost constantly. A "1967 Chevelle and El Camino
Factory Assembly Instruction Manual" sells for $20 for example. Also try a
search on "Fisher Body Manual", and "Chassis Service Manual" - both turned
up numerous hits.

Actually,
it's most shared mail servers that have the limit. The hosting companies &
ISPs don’t want their users tying up all those resources. A friend of mine
recently sent me a 10MB file w/ no problem. A client sent me a 6.5MB file the
night before last. I have my own domain name and no limit on message size.
Netcom/Earthlink/Mindspring does have a limit. I think it's only 1MB. I use
Netcom to connect, but not for my mail.

It happens all the time, especially on the more popular items. The sellers
bid against themselves to see how high they can raise the price. Then if
nobody outbids them, they contact the highest "real" bidder privately with
some story about how the buyer backed out, and they offer it to that person
at their last bid. This is a very effective way to jack up the final selling
price.

-Original Message-
I just started using Ebay. However, I have a suspicion
that some sellers assume an identity as a buyer and
bid against their own item thus attempting to raise
the
price. Anyone else here have that thought or am I just
paranoid ?

eBay frowns very heavily on people bidding on their own items or using a
shill to increase the price. I've had it happen to me and have reported
them to eBay's Safe Harbor. They used to have a feature that let you see
what a bidder/winner has bid on in the past. They also used to keep bid
items on file for 30 days so you could go back at least that far. Don't
know if they still do and I'm sure the practice continues. I would imagine
that quite often they either bid themselves out of a sale or their wares are
worth more to them than the general public at a given time. Unfortunately,
you run into jerks everywhere and eBay is big enough now to have more than
their share.

All-in-all, I've had good experiences both buying and selling. As others
will tell you, bid what you're willing to pay and ask lots of questions. If
you don't get what you want today, it'll probably come up again.

[Chevelle-List] Service manuals

2001-12-05 Thread Jeff Fischer

Ok, now that I have this '71 Chevelle, I have to get busy and begin the
resto. For some reason, it doesn't seem to be restoring itself out in the
garage. :-)
What manuals will I need to show me how to restore and repair this car?
Haven't worked on these cars in years.

Is there a book titled, "How to Restore Chevelles for Dummies?" *grin*

Thanks again,

BTW:

I bought 2 of Spintech's 2nd to quietest muffler. Put them onto 3.5"
exhaust, and it's incredibly loud! Louder than my SBC race car with 3" open
exhaust. The Spintech rep insists that if I use 3" tubing, with 2.5"
exiting the mufflers, it will be MUCH quieter. He even offereed to modify
the mufflers for free, to accomodate the 3" inlet and 2.5" outlet.

We'll see.
take care,

Re: [Chevelle-List] Ignition

2001-12-05 Thread Keith Cooper

I think that the problem is that the file is too
big. In general, most email programs will not take attachment over 1.5m
(15000kb). My email program was trying to receive mail all afternoon but keep
failing. I think that your mail was the first one, so it was blocking the
download of all other mail. Can you reduce the file size (must likely you will
have to reduce the resolution of the scanned file) or you can convert the file
to a "JPG" file. To reduce the resolution of a scan file, you would have to
rescan the artilce. If you rescan the article, you should use 300-600
resolution. Converting the scanned file to a JPG might be easier.
Thanks.
Keith

Keith, I have been trying to send you
an article on the question you asked about on the ignition wires. But it keeps
coming back as undeliverable. Tried 3 time. Can't be the wrong address as you
got the one on the HEI.

Ken,
I believe that there are some that bid their stuff up(by having a friend
do it). The key is to know how much the item is worth and how much you are
willing to spend. I picked up another set of LS-5 heads and Intake for my 70
Chevelle for $125.00..another thing to remember is shipping.. it cost $100.00
to get those parts to me.
Buyer beware..there is lots of junk for sale. Be sure to ask all necessary
questions before bidding. A nice piece to one person is scrap to another.
The pictures don't always tell the story.

Donnie:

I just started using Ebay. However, I have a suspicion
that some sellers assume an identity as a buyer and
bid against their own item thus attempting to raise
the
price. Anyone else here have that thought or am I just
paranoid ?
