[Chevelle-list] FW: disc brake conversion
-Original Message- From: John Liao [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, July 05, 2004 10:56 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: disc brake conversion Hello all, I recently aquired a one / two owner 64 chevelle malibu ss. Unfortunately it still has the drum brakes on the front. I have been searching the web for reasonable cost drum -> disc conversions and have found a couple of sites that describe the "tall" spindle swap. Some say there are significant problems, some say it is not a big deal, some say that you can find a 12 " swap instaed of the 11 " swap while retaining the stock 5 on 4 3/4 inch bolt circle. Some say just go with an all new kit, some say that just find used parts in a junk yard. I want the swap to be easy, relatively inexpensive and work with the stock drum brakes in the back. I have a fair amount of mechanical ability and live in Northern California. All suggestions and advice are appreciated. Thanks. John(;-)
Re: [Chevelle-list] Whats it worth?
Depending on how solid it is, how bad the floors are, etc. 750-1000 my guess.
RE: [Chevelle-list] Whats it worth?
I'd say 1,000 or so, nonmatching #'s, no motor. Sounds like a good project though, if the price is right. Date: Tue, 6 Jul 2004 22:27:32 -0400 I'm trying to help my brother find a project 70 chevelle. We looked at one today. Its a regular chevelle with a ss cowl hood ,buckets, console, and 12bolt. There is no motor. It pretty much needs the works however the floors ,trunk and frame are rock solid and rust free. It will probably need new quarters and fenders for a nice job. What should one of these realistically go for? Thanks! JD _ MSN 9 Dial-up Internet Access helps fight spam and pop-ups now 2 months FREE! http://join.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200361ave/direct/01/

I'd would not pay more than $1000 honestly. No engine, trans, or paperwork, it's nothing more than a rolling body. Tom

Something you have to be really careful about when adding hardened seats,is getting into a water jacket. My race shop ruined a nice 049 oval port head trying to do this. Some 19x8 and 19x10's would be very cool,Andre,,but more expensive. If I ever change wheels again on my 69 Elky,I think a set of 19x9.5's and 19x13's would be the way I go. 315's will fit a 68-72 if the right wheel is used. Hi Bill: Book rates are for books, that is things without advertising. Mailing magazines to any foreign country requires an envelope and first class postage. US publishers enjoy "periodical postage rates" which are set by magazine weight, % of advertising, and the numbers sorted by zip codes, but this does not apply internationally or for a private party. The cover of this issue has a flamed '65 Malibu SS with 3 babes riding on the back seat cushion. It may have been a special issue, but you're welcome to it if you want. Does the Italian post office have a special book rate like here in the US? Email me off-list with your address & I'll send it to you. BTW, I will get the measurements for you soon. I've been so busy lately with the holidays and work that I haven't even pulled the cover off of the Chevelle in 2 1/2 weeks. BL

Re: [Chevelle-list] choppin the top ?
Ya might get hooked up with the members of KKOA. ( Kustom Kemps of America) (417-847-2940). Their end of the car hobby world has included chopped tops since the heyday of Barris, Starbird, Bailon and the Alexander Brothers. The Hirohata (sp) Merc is still a fantastic car. If anyone can help with a chop, the KKOA group can send you to the right person. It's not only the metal but the glass as well. I am having a ball with my 68 SS ( cept for that electric thang) but i am gonna have to have a flamed Merc with mailbox slot windows before I time out. Almost anything 50's ( or 40's or 30's and some from the 60's) looked better with a nice chop. Top have it done right, it ain't cheap. Last I heard here in Dallas, it was $3,000 but that was a long time back. But driving through ltle slots is a rush. Especially with a California rake. Ya can't see too far ahead and overhead stop lights are just a guesswork thing without the little plastic viewer like on 50's Chevy's. - Original Message - From: BIG_DOGG To: chevelle list ; NOVA MAIL Sent: Tuesday, July 06, 2004 4:12 PM Subject: [Chevelle-list] choppin the top ? ok 64 skylark has anyone choped a top before ? how hard was it ? could anyone do it ? cost ? thanks randy g AKA BIG DOGG Do you Yahoo!?Yahoo! I did mean seats, and realized my error after the first answer came back. This guy was negative about everything. My six year twins were actually behaving so I could not break away from all the "sky is falling" stories and about his rust problems on his Mercury Parklane - so in a sense he's a F*rd guy and it showed. His point was that without having a lead additive that damage would be caused to the pistons by blowing holes in them if the car back fires or pings especially under hard acceleration. My hardly occasional back fire comes through my carb and the car is timed that it never ping's. I do get an occasional engine run on for a half a second which I could blame on the lower octane. Any one using "lead additive" and any thoughts supporting >this guys comments? The guides aren't the problem, it's the valve seats, esp the exhaust seats. You're only going to blow holes in the pistons under REALLY hard detonation, and since the car doesn't ping, you aren't having that problem. I don't know what a backfire would have to do with anything (???). If the motor has a lot of miles on it running unleaded fuel, you'll probably see some sinking of the exhaust valves when you pull the heads off. The lead acts as a lubricant for the valve seats, and without it, the valve wears away the seat and starts to sink. The hardened seats are made of a different (harder) material so that they don't need the lead. Heat cycles have nothing to do with making the seats any harder or softer. Adding the additive now may not help if the seats are already worn, but it sure wouldn't hurt to use it to prevent any further wear. BL

Re: [Chevelle-list] Help- It goed, then stopped
It's kind of a pain in the butt, but under the wiper motor where the wires connect to the fuse block, I would pull and check those connections. Had the same problem on my '64 2 years ago and was looking for a thermal wire around the starter connections, but it was one of the main wires supplying the fuse block. Everything under the hood was fine, but nothing inside, ignition, interior lights, etc. were dead. Re: [Chevelle-list] Fuel / Lead additives
Like Clint said, The only thing that could be hurt by a lack of lead is the exhaust valve seats. Unless you drive your car tens of thousands of miles a year at highway speeds, don't sweat it. If you build your engine by all means install hardened ex. valve seats. Otherwise drive her like you stole her. Re: [Chevelle-list] Fuel / Lead additives
Sorry but the guy sounds like an idiot,Kris. Engines ran for a long time on leaded fuel tend to have a pretty good cushion of hard deposits built up around the valve seats. Switching to unleaded fuel might take a long time to wear them away. When I was doing a lot of flying,I would occasionly add five gallons or so of 100-LL Avgas to my 57 Nomad's 327. I drove that car for over ten years without any signs of valve procession. My hardly occasional back fire comes through my carb and the car is timed that it never ping's. I do get an occasional engine run on for a half a second which I could blame on the lower octane. Any one using "lead additive" and any thoughts supporting this guys comments? BL

Re: Re: [Chevelle-list] Help- It goed, then stopped
So when did they start putting on fusible links? I'm not sure, but I know that '66's had them. It's a cost-cutting deal, the fuse links were cheaper than a fuse & fuse holder, were easier to assemble (since they're made to the harness), and less prone to damage in assembly. BL

My junction block was gone, so I just went direct-connect.

So when did they start putting on fusible links? I had mentioned that in my first attempt at posting. (which was blown away by ISP - grrr) 64's have relatively primitive electrical systems, with some surprising things un-fused. I keep my cars in garage with batterries disconnected to avoid unfortunate incidents. Re: [Chevelle-list] Help- It goed, then stopped
Firewall bulkhead connector is a good candidate. There is a small (5/16 or 3/8) bolt that goes thru ther middle, tightening it to the fuse block. Remove that bolt & visually check the male connectors for wear and the female connectors for being spread. Another possibility is the connection at the junction block. The JB is on the core support, probably near the battery but it could be on the other side. I'm not familiar with 68 wiring at all. Finally, according to my 68 shop manual, there is a joint on the line between the j-block and the alternator. 4 wires come together, from the j-block, to the alternator, to the Voltage reg, and to the horn relay. Don't know whether the joint is crimped or soldered but its also a place for things to go bad. rick schaefer 72 El camino http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/rick/elcamino17.jpg ACES #00140 Team Chevelle #00038 -- "Scott Somers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Since I have only been a Chevelle owner since my divorce in April ( she got the '55 Chevy) I am not that familiar with the operations of the "newer" cars. Check that the wire is secured tightly to the junction block, you'll probably have to take the battery out to check this. The horn relay is mounted on the left (driver's) side of the radiator support. The power to the fuseblock comes off of the wires from this relay, and there are also fusible links here. Check to be sure that the terminals are clean & tight on the relay and that you have battery voltage at both of the big lugs on the relay. There is no thermal thing anywhere in the system. You should probably buy the 1968 Chassis Service Manual and the Assembly Manual for the car. It will give you the information that you need to fix a bunch of problems. BL
