Instructions, Chapter One

To unsubscribe from this service you must first purchase a
Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation

Unit. The unit can be obtained from most hardware stores and dental clinics.
Be sure to obtain the proper permits to operate the unit from the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Food and Drug

Administration in Washington D.C. USA.
Be sure to carefully unpack the kit and place each component in its
accompanying mesh safety bag.
Mount the Pershing DF4 mesinator on top of the perforated Gerring
Mach 77 refibulator and attach them using the
eight-millimeter torque fork. Be sure that the refibulator is mounted
at a 66 degree angle and
properly dispersed so that it is flush with the curved section of the
Pyrex thistle tube.
Place the four sections of the triangular separation gear into the
posture cylinder and lock them into place using the band aid adhesive strip.
Insert the wiggling pin into the wobbling hole, making sure that it
seated correctly.

Place the D cell battery and the eleven 9 volt batteries in the power chamber.
The device should be calibrated before operation using the optional
digital corkscrew accessory pack prior to operation.
Insert the digital corkscrew through the electronic combustion
service chamber using caution not to touch the reinforced
tungsten igniter control module and quickly turn the inverter drive
to 28.6 degrees.
Turn the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit
upside down and hit the bottom plate with a 48-ounce

ball-peen hammer while shaking the unit vigorously.
Force open the door to the incineration valve compartment and set the
pressure gauge to 719 psi.

Close the door and seal it shut with duct tape.
The unit should now be properly calibrated and ready to use.
Before activating the Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription
Cancellation Unit, you must first elevate it to a height of 229 feet
above sea level to insure that the unit receives the proper oxygen
level and barometric pressure.
Point the aerial to 17 degrees north by northeast to within the
parameters of the Telstar GS-2 weather satellite and
apply pressure to the wing shaft on the southern most section of the
modular accelerator.
Using the special ratchet adapter supplied with the unit, rotate the
heater core to the "on" position. The "on" position has been obtained
when the green light begins to flash, signifying that the red light
is about to go off.
Once the red light is off, flip the toggle switch labeled "ON/OFF" to
the "ON" position and count to 47 before logging on to

the system.
Logon using your username and password and wait for the prompt.
Once prompted you must check the box with the appropriate action you
wish to take and then press the pressure release

button and turn off the compressor while turning the hand crank at 231 meters
per minute.
Next, press control, alt, delete, caps lock, shift, number lock,
escape and tab simultaneously.

Press enter. You will have one second to complete the procedure.
If you fail to respond in the time limit allowed, simply purchase a new
Craft-O-Matic Adjustable Subscription Cancellation Unit and start from
the beginning.
Please remember that this is the only way we will accept for you to
unsubscribe from this service.

We have made every attempt to simplify the procedure for your
convenience. Failure to comply with the unsubscribe policy will result
in immediate termination of your subscription so please follow the above
directions closely.

I don't think I insulted anyone. All I said is that it "Sounds like a
lot" to me. I think I'm allowed to express an opinion when somebody is
asking for one. It's ok with me if you don't have the same opinion.

I have met Phil and I think he can speak up if he is insulted. It's
not even his bike.

BTW, I would never insult Phil's car.

I've seen it done with number 1 on the driver side and I've seen it done like
the Chilton book.

I always set it up like the Chilton book says.

It will work either way.

I am having a difference of opinion. I had the distributor out and replaced
the cap. I had marked the distrbutor before I took it out so it is back to its
original position. I cranked the motor to 8 degrees BTDC on the #1 cylinder,
pointed the rotor towards the #1 cylinder I then put the I put the respective
plug wires clock wise around the cap in there respective firing order

distributor being on the passenger side verses being on the driver side with
the rotor pointing towards the # 1 cylinder the way I have it set up , but

I called Comp's tech line one time. I did get a straight answer about a
choice between two cams but I got the feeling the tech was in a hurry to
move on.

I have also called Crane's tech line many times and always got answers to my
questions. They have always been patient and helpful.

A whole lot of good that would do. Last time I called Comp Cams' tech line
I
was put on with someone who was so obviously unwilling to help and
unwilling
to do anything other than punch numbers into his little software. Anything
I

said which deviated from answering his scripted questions was met with an
indignant repeat of the previous question. The whole experience sucked so
bad, I hung up and called Airflow Research instead. AFR was kind enough of
to actually talk to me about what I needed. Comp Cams should throw AFR
some

commission for the order I eventually made of a full Comp Cams valvetrain.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Changing Firing Order On Cam

2007-05-04 Thread Bill Lessenberry
The idea behind the 4/7 swap is to eliminate the 5/7 firing sequence
which can lead to cross-firing and detonation between those 2
cylinders. It's a problem only on high-revving motors, but it
wouldn't hurt anything to have it on a street motor if you have $$$
to burn. BTW, it's an old idea, I've seen stuff from the late 1960's
that was written about it. Seems to me that you're just swapping the
problem from the 5/7 sequence to a 4/2 sequence, but I ain't an
engineer or high $$ race engine builder.

That's not an option. I paid big $$$ for this carb, it's going on an
original restored numbers matching car. The seller is offering my

make this one work. I don't believe the teflon tape will work
either, since the leak appears to be coming from the area between the
sealing surface on the carb bowl and the gasket on the inlet
nut. I'll try it when I have time just to see, though. Thanks,

I bought a Quadrajet from a guy, the fuel inlet threads had been
helicoiled. I installed it on the car yesterday and it's leaking
fuel from the inlet. I've tightened the 1" nut as tight as I dare,
and it still leaks. It has a nylon seal washer on it and the end of
the helicoil may be sticking out a little too far. It's NOT leaking
from the fuel line, it's definitely the inlet fitting. Anyone on the

I have a bit of a problem with Paul Herd, the author of the SS

[Chevelle-list] '68 Grille fitment

Had the bumpers done by Tri-City Plating and they look like
mirrors. Made my old original grille look kinda tacky
(scratches, dull, etc), so I bought a NOS grille off of
Ebarf. Painted the black in the middle and installed it with the
little rivets with the nuts on the end. Started installing the
grille extensions and now I got a problem. The right side has about
a 1/4" gap between the end of the grille and the extension, I can't
install the left side extension 'cause it's butting into the grille;
so the whole grille needs to move about 3/16" to the right. The
holes that the grille rivets are in don't have any play to adjust the
grille side-to-side, and it doesn't look like the grille support
brackets are adjustable either (kinda hard to see for sure). How the
heck do I remedy this?? All ideas welcome, good ones are deeply appreciated.

The yellow wire ran up to the coil to supply the points ignition with a full 12
volts for starting. It was energized only when the starter was engaged. If you
are using HEI ignition you don't want this wire connected.

You also want to make sure you don't supply your HEI distributor with power
from the resistor wire that used to power your points type distributor. HEI
needs a full 12 volts.

the starter. It looks like the S terminal is closest to the engine and the
purple wire goes on that one. The center lug is big and the wire from the
battery goes to that one. There is then a small terminal directly below the

I figured you guys might get a kick out of this:

Letter to Dear Abby
Dear Abby,

I've never written to you before, but I really need your advice on what
could be a crucial decision. I've suspected for some time now that my wife
has been cheating on me.

The usual signs. Phone rings but if I answer, the caller hangs up.
My wife has been going out with the girls a lot recently although when I
ask

their names she always says, "Just some friends from work, you don't know
them."

I always stay awake to look out for her taxi coming home, but she always
walks down the drive. Although I can hear a car driving off, as if she has
gotten out of the car round the corner. Why? Maybe she wasn't in a taxi?

I once picked her cell phone up just to see what time it was and she went
berserk and screamed that I should never touch her phone again and why was
I

checking up on her.

Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my wife. I think deep
down
I just didn't want to know the truth, but last night she went out again
and

I decided to really check on her.

I decided I was going to park my Harley Davidson motorcycle next to the
garage and then hide behind it so I could get a good view of the whole
street when she came home. It was at that moment, crouching behind my
Harley, that I noticed that the rocker covers on my engine seemed to be
leaking a little oil.

Is this something I can fix myself or should I take it back to the dealer?

I'd be more concerned about the 3-speed being able to hold up behind

Which would be the better combo for the 402 BB?? It certainly
shouldn't bog down going into second. I just want something I have

Thanks for any input.

From the FAQ page that you should have read when you joined--the
whole page is here:

BillL

Any other rules we should know about?

Generally, your List Administrator is not big on rules. It is
expected that list participants exercise due politeness when
discussing controversial subjects with each other. Occasionally,
tempers will flair and hurtful comments will be tossed about, but it
is anticipated that most members will be grown up enough that they
can tolerate contrary opinions and maybe the odd joke or two.

There are some other guidelines for ensuring a happy list:
It is appreciated by all if you could ensure your subject headers
reflect accurately the contents of your posts, especially if you are
replying to a current thread.
When you reply to another message, please try to refrain from quoting
the entire message in your own post. Instead, quote just the relevant
bits of the original message. Doing this reduces bandwidth needed to
transmit e-mail (especially nice for folks who dial into their e-mail
via modem) and makes your messages much easier to read, particularly
in digest format.
Since some list members might have trouble with them, the sending of
binary attachments (such as pictures of your Chevelle) to the
Chevelle List is not allowed and will only get the administrator in a
very cranky mood as he sits waiting an hour for the picture to load
off the server. In short:

This also keeps nasty viruses from reaching your computer via a mailing list.
In all cases, remember to reply to folks as if they were in the same
room with you. Because you can't see other members of the Chevelle
List is no reason to behave any less politely than you would with
people you were meeting face to face.
Your List Administrator is none too interested in maintaining strict
adherence to notions of topical relevance, and is not crazy about
dozens of superfluous messages complaining that a particular post is
off-topic. Try to stay on the subject of Chevelles, but if the
conversation digresses, hey, you're among friends. Have some fun.

If, on the other hand, you are one of those human beings who has a
hard time dealing with other human beings when they start acting like
human beings, you might not appreciate the easy-going manner in which
this list is administered.

There really aren't any dumb questions, but there are plenty of dumb
answers. Always ask someone if you're not sure about something.

I'm a professional auto tech and I deal with parts people every

was doing a job at the first of the year and the part I was replacing
wouldn't fit correctly. I called the parts man twice (this is a SAAB
dealer parts guy, who usually knows his stuff) and was assured that I
had the right parts. I had to take digital pics of the old & new
parts side-by-side and email them to him before he finally realized
that he had sent me parts for a 9-3 and I had a 9-5. I had told him
in every conversation we had that it was a 9-5, he just screwed
up. The point I'm making here is that the good guys can still give
you the wrong stuff, so always compare the old to the new before you
install them. It saves time and headaches. Welcome to my world. :-P

Yep, it'll wiggle. If it doesn't then the bearing preload is too
tight. When you drive the car, the bearings will warm up, the hub

it won't have room to expand & will burn up.

This is kinda like my term paper :-) Hope you get something out of it.

Got Smog??

Here’s the result of research that I’ve done
pertaining to smog controls on the 1968~1969 Big
Block powered Chevelles. First, a little legislative history:

In 1955, the Federal Air Pollution Control Act
was passed. This act provided Federal funding
for research about auto emission pollution and
authorized the Secretary of Health, Education,
and Welfare to get a better understanding of the
causes and effects of air pollution.

In 1959, California was the first state to set
standards for air pollution. These first
standards led to the requirement that PCV valves
be installed on cars sold California beginning in 1963.

1963 was when the first Federal Clean Air Act was
passed. This act allowed the Federal gov’t to
define air quality criteria based on scientific research.

In 1965, the Motor Vehicle Air Pollution Control
Act of 1965 amends the Clean Air Act. This
directed the Dept of Health, Education, & Welfare
to establish auto emission standards, and
provided that these standards be enforced with
the 1968 model year cars. The Feds used the same
standards that were set by California for the 1966 models.

1966 is when tailpipe emission standards were
adopted by California, these standards were used
by the Federal gov’t for the 1968 model year cars per the MVAPC Act of 1965.

In 1968, the other 49 states were required to
adhere to the California standards. Since the
auto manufacturers had been installing pollution
control systems on their engines for the
California cars, it wasn’t a big step,
manufacturing-wise, to install them on all of the
cars. One of the systems that was installed was
an air-injection system, where a pump supplied
air that was introduced into the exhaust system
just outside of the exhaust port. The additional
air provided ignites the unburned hydrocarbons in
the exhaust, reducing the emissions of the engine.

The 1968 standards were carried over into 1969,
which is also the year that the Federal
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created.
Tests conducted in 1968 and 1969 showed that more
than half of the cars built were failing the emission standards.

In 1970, the Clean Air Act is amended again to
establish a Federal program to control air
pollution. Part of that program gave the EPA
enforcement and fining powers that it previously
didn’t have. The EPA now had the power to fine
the manufacturers $10,000 per vehicle for
non-compliance if they violated the standards.

Now, a bit of emission technology stuff
If the perfect amount of air and gasoline are
burned in the perfect environment, the gasoline
will break down into H2O, CO2 and
CO. Unfortunately, our cars aren’t perfect and
there will be leftover HC that will be blown out
the tailpipe. The amount of the HC emissions is
controlled by a number of factors, including
spark timing, camshaft profile, carburetor
throttle position, and general state of tune of
the motor. In a manual transmission car, the
driver lets off of the gas, shifts gears, gets on
the gas, lets off again, shifts gears, etc. Each
time the driver pushes on the gas, the
accelerator pump squirts, and, unless he’s
driving at full throttle, not all of that gas is
burned in the combustion chamber. The engineers
at the car plants came up with a pump that would
inject air into the exhaust port, the idea being
that the extra air would ignite the unburned HC’s
that come out of the motor, thus reducing the
emissions. The driver of an automatic
transmission car doesn’t have to get off and on
the gas when he shifts, so theoretically, an
automatic trans car will not create as much HC
pollution as a manual. Usually, a higher
horsepower engine will have a more radical
camshaft profile with more lift and
duration. This allows for more cylinder filling,
i.e. more fuel in the engine. This fuel isn’t
burned thoroughly in the motor, so it will have
more HC pollution than the lower HP motor and
will need more help to meet emission
standards. That’s why higher horsepower or
manual transmission Chevelles have the AIR (Air
Injection Reactor) system (aka smog pump) installed on those motors.

REMEMBER: The Federal standards were applicable
to ALL cars produced for the 1968 model years,
whether the states had differing or no standards
at all. Therefore, it stands to reason that no
Chevelles were produced with the emission
controls left off. I can’t prove it yet, but I
believe the Feds had inspectors at the plants to enforce the rules.

Now you have a little background, so let's get back to our Chevelles.
Since the 1968 and 1969 regulations were the
same, it follows that the '68 and '69 models
would have the same smog controls. If you check
the '68 AIM (and the '69, I don't have one but I
hope you do & will research this) Section 6, Pages A10 and A11, Belt routing,

2006-12-02 Thread Bill Vander Werf
FW: Brakes for Moser Rear EndsSeveral years ago I bought a "bolt in" Ford 9"
for my 71 from Moser. They put GM flanges on the ends of the housing and I was
able to use my stock brakes.

I had to use a die grinder to open up the center hole in the backing plate to
allow the Ford type bearing to pass through it but it wasn't a big deal. They
made an axle retainer to go with it.

I bought 31 spline axles with 3" long 1/2" studs so I had to drill out the
holes in my drums. Again, no big deal.

Moser can fab any combo you want, ask them.

I'm very happy with the Moser 9". My car runs low 11s and weighs 3800 pounds
with driver. I have over 1500 runs on it without any problems.

Perhaps I am not thinking this one through enough - so I ask the collective..

If I order a hot 12-bolt from Moser, it comes with Ford ends that accept Ford
brake systems. If I buy the Moser rear, I am going to be broke, so I would
elect to use high-end OEM brakes (2004 Corvette on the front, 2006 mustang on
the rear). Is it possible to order rotors for the Ford systems that have holes
drilled for the Chevy bolt pattern, or do I have to redrill them myself? Or
would it be easier to order a Chevy brake system and have some brackets fabbed
up?

I want to try to stay away from the high $ brake systems that will solve this
problem. Will I get in trouble if I drill 5 additional holes in a Ford rotor
so it fits my Chevelle?

Re: [Chevelle-list] NHRA Rules - Fuel Line

2006-11-18 Thread Bill Vander Werf

The 2006 rule book, page 196 - General Regulations says:

All non-OEM fuel lines must be metallic, steel braided or NHRA accepted
"woven or non-woven pushlock" A maximum of 12 inches total (front to rear)
of non- metallic or non- steel braided hose is permitted for connection
purposes only.

Fuel lines (except steel braided) in the flywheel / bellousing area must be
enclosed in a 16" length of steel tubing, 1/8th inch minimum wall thickness,
securely mounted as protection against fuel line rupture.

The section says more but that looks like it covers your question.

Everyone I know uses aluminum.
I've done several with the line inside the frame rail. I wasn't even aware
of the 16" steel tubing rule but I would suppose a frame rail is better
protection anyway. I've never had any issues with them being done that way.

Drove the '66 to work today, and decided to throw this
question out to "the Council":

My car runs great, and the 327 has an aluminum intake,
speed pro 10.5:1 pistons, crane powermax cam
(272/284), Comp Cams roller rockers, and freshly built
camel hump heads with pinned in studs. Valves have
been redone within the past 2-3 years with MAYBE 1000
miles on them, and I have new valve springs and
retainers (also Crane, to match the cam).

All that being said, it runs great with one small pet
peave.. When I drive the car it runs flawlessly UNTIL
I get to 2000 RPMs on the tach, at which point I hear
a slight "chatter". That's the only way I can
describe it. I've heard hung up lifters before, and
that's not the noise- that's a chronic
"tap-tap-tap-tap" (like 1-2-3-4). This, in my best
impression, goes "dadadadadadada" in a much faster
interval, thus the chatter description. It sounds
like it's on the driver side of the engine, and
happens ONLY at 2K RPMs.. I drop back, it goes away-
I increase throttle PAST 2K RPMs, it goes away. I
thought maybe it might be something bumping the
dipstick or something stupid like that, so I moved the
dipstick and it still happens.

I don't think it's worth pulling the engine back out
to check, but it's damned frustrating. Anyone have
any guesses? I do not have valve guides and I
wondered if it might be that I need them. Another
note, I had the same noise when I had my 260/272 cam
in it, which I just swapped out to the 272/284 as of
this year. I thought maybe the disassembly and
reassembly might make it go away (with readjustment of
the valves), but it's still there so I'm guessing it's
lower end noise. But from where and why ONLY at that
revolution?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Re: [Chevelle-list] Custom Paint color?

2006-10-29 Thread Bill Vander Werf

Dan,

I'm a PPG jobber. The color you are looking for
really isn't an issue. I use my PPG "Prophet" probably 8 to 10 times a day on
the average. I find that as long as I have the computer make a formula in either
Deltron DBC basecoat or PPG Global (my personal favorite) I have a 95% hit
rate.

Granted, if you don't plan on blending your
repairs, even if you find the exact colors the truck was painted you won't get a
100% match.

Paint chips aren't a true indicator of color
either. I've seen variations in color books produced by the same
manufacturer.

Color match can be affected by a great number of
things. Spray gun choice, different air cap / fluid nozzle combinations, air
pressure, solvent choice, environmental conditions, painter technique
etc.

The truth is; You and I could each paint something
with the same can of paint and end up with a visibly different
color.

Have a paint jobber read the truck with their
computer and generate a formula. Have them print you a copy of the formula to
save and you will never have to wonder about your colors again.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Best primer - frame/ suspension parts

2006-09-08 Thread Bill Vander Werf

I second this opinion. Epoxy adheres like sh*t to a
blanket and body filler sticks to it better than it does to bare metal. The
corrosion resistance and moisture barrier and properties make it a great
product to put down first.

I recommend it over any bare metal. After stripping
paint off the body and any rust removal / metal patching you should use it
because it seals out moisture.

As Dan said, do your filler work over it.
It's not meant to be a filler /surfacer. It
doesn't sand or fill very well and wasn't meant to, so do your bondo work and
then put a primer surfacer over it to do your finish work.

Anything that is going to sit for a while (like
most parts during a restoration) before painting should have epoxy on it before
primer surfacer. Water won't penetrate it like it will primer
surfacer.

The beauty of this product is; once you follow
these steps the parts can sit around indefinitely before paint because moisture
can't get to the metal. If you just use a primer surfacer water will soak right
through to the metal and primer surfacer holds it like a sponge.

  - frame/ suspension parts

Epoxy Primer is your best bet on bare metal,
whether its your frame, or your sheetmetal.  All bodywork should be done
on top of the epoxy primer.

You can pick up a cheap gravity feed gun at
Harbor Freight for about 15 bucks that will work great for spraying your frame
  and suspension.

  Best of luck!
