Re: [Chevelle-list] 700 R4 Trans

2010-06-20 Thread Bob Haggard
I have a 200-4R in my 70 Skylark (GSX clone) and I am still running the stock
2.73 gear. I keep it in 3rd gear most of the time except on the highway, 55-60
mph. 2,000 rpm is about 78 mph. I have driven it to Miami and Daytona last
November and I just got back from the last 3 cities part of the Hot Rod Power
Tour. Gas mileage for the last trip was a miserable 14.5 mph with 350-4
engine. 2.73 is way too much gear for a heavy car. The problem will be
corrected before the next highway trip but there just hasn't been money in the
budget the last 12 months.

 Chuck Hanson acesp...@comcast.net wrote:
Good advice, Rick. A reputable local trans shop is the way I'd go, too.

Ditto on your gear ratio selection... The 2.73 won't cut it with the
overdrive trans. I had 3.08 gears in my '66 wagon w/700R4 trans, and
it never was in its sweet spot while cruising @ 70 mph. Changed to
a 3.42 and the motor is a lot happier, plus mileage picked up about
1.5 - 2 mpg to boot! Since less throttle is now required to maintain
any given speed, I had to reprogram the ECM for my Holley FI system,
but it was only small tweaks in the light cruise mode.

Also with 2.73 gears and overdrive you'll be cruising at 1200RPM

 Hello everyone,

I am a reading person on the list and not so much of a contributer but I
would like your opinions. I have a 65 Chevelle and it currently has a 350
with a powerglide. Everything is getting tired. I want to overhaul and
stroke the engine by a local engine builder. Plans are to do the rebuild
this summer because he builds alot of racing engines and winter is his busy
time. He said it will have between 425 to 450 horsepower.
I want to put in a 700R4 transmission for better highway cruising. I have
looked at many different transmission companies. Has anyone ever used
Monster transmission? They seem to have decent prices and kits to complete
 the conversion.
I would also like to upgrade to front disc brakes. Brakes really confuse
me. I see a really big range of prices. I do not need the high end brakes
just better than drums can offer.
I am also thinking about a March serpentine belt system. Of course, next
comes the rear end rebuild with a posi-unit. Any suggestions on gear ratio?

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated,

Re: [Chevelle-list] Let's try again....

2008-07-13 Thread Bob Haggard
I would buy a vacuum gage from your local autoparts store and check your vacuum
pressure. If you get one with a pump you can also check to see if the advance
is any good. They do go bad and you can buy replacments from Napa or other
parts stores. I would also buy a good brand of stop leak and follow the
directions to see if it will cure the leak. It might not be a permanent fix
and then again it may. GM dealers put it in new cars to fix small problems
under warranty. It's much easier than pulling the engine just to check the
freeze plugs. My $.02.

OK - let's try this again(second time to post my questions...)

I've recently gotten around to working on my '67 Chevelle after ignoring for
it several years (I know... bad bad bad)

I did a LOT of pre-start work on the motor to ensure I didn't cause any
damage - which seemed to pay off as it started right up the first time.
(changed oil, drained all the fuel, pre-lubed extensively etc etc)

The motor (built 350) is running pretty good except for two issues that I'd
 like help with;

 1. I 'think' the vacuum advance isn't working - when I put the timing light
on the engine, the timing doesn't change at all with or without the vacuum
advance connected... shouldn't it change? Would this cause 'popping' through
the exhaust at higher RPMs? (~4000rpm) - i.e. no advance for higher rpms?

 and

 2. At sustained higher rpm (say 3000rpm+) - there is coolant dripping from
the bellhousing - I'm assuming this means I've got a bad freeze plug on the
back of the motor - anyone else ever had this? It doesn't drip unless the
motor is running up - i.e. no drips at idle. I've verified there are no
leaks anywhere else on the motor.

Thanks everyone - I hope to have the rust-bucket running and driving good
 enough for next year's Chevelle-a-bration.

 How about some responses?

 Mark

2008-05-18 Thread Bob Haggard
I have Dakota Digital Dashs in my 63 and 70 Nova's and love them. Sorry to
hear you had trouble since I recommend them to everyone. Their cruise control
works great too if you use the control unit to send the pulses to it.

 Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Dash Question

I purchased a restored dash on eBay and then installed a Dakota Digital VF3
Dash in my '71 Elky. I cannot personally recommend the DD dash as mine has
been a lot of trouble. I have replaced the control box three times and am
currently waiting on a replacement display unit. They are great at honoring
their lifetime warranty, but pulling the dash to replace parts can get old
very quickly. I believe Covan makes a gauge carrier that allows you to
install pretty much any aftermarket gauges. Of course the reproduction
 gauges are available as well.

The restored dash was from a Monte Carlo and the holes had been filled with
epoxy. Grain was duplicated and it looks great. I have since experimented
with replicating the grain and it's pretty easy to do with a toothpick or an
awl while the epoxy is still soft. I bought another MC dash that had not
been restored a couple of years ago. It's in my warehouse and I don't really
recall the condition. I will take a look at it and try to price it fairly if
you think you might be interested. If I remember correctly, all of the
 bracing is there.

As far as the swap, it's not very difficult. You do have to be careful to
support the dash while installing it, as it is kind of flimsy until properly
 braced.

   John,

It is something I have wanted to do as well but it is a pricey conversion
and that has held me back. You will need the dash carrier, gauge cluster,
under dash wiring harness and vent balls. Also think there are one or two
small steel brackets that are unique to the SS dash but not sure. Its my
understanding that the aftermarket carrier has a fit issue at the glove box.

Stay away from Monte Carlo dashes as they have holes drilled through the
face that are used to attach the wood grain.
70 gauge clusters are one year only if you want the correct green
backlight. If it doesn't matter, 71's and 72's will also work.
70 and 71 carriers are the same. In 72 they added a seat belt light next to
 the cigarette lighter.

I will send you some jpg's off list of an article that explains the
 teardown and reinstall.

 Subject: [Chevelle-list] Dash Question

 Folks,

How difficult would it be adapting an SS dash to a plain old 70 Malibu. I
have a line on a beautiful 'grandma' Malibu that looks like it is going to be
the baseline for the 70 Clone that I have been dreaming of building. The
interior is an almost perfect white with a bench. The only thing that I would
like todo to the interior is to adapt an M21 for the power glide and to
replace the dash with an SS dash. Is the dash just a plain drop in dash that
will connect to the stock wiring except for maybe the tach? Or will I need a
whole new wiring harness. The motor would either be a 'turn key' ZZ4, or a
crate 502. BUt I am leaning towards the ZZ4 as I can still get the AC to work
with the pump on the ZZ4.

Thanks in advanced for any advice,
 John from CT.

2007-09-05 Thread Bob Haggard
I have a new 12-bolt from Moser Engineering that I installed last month and the
paperwork that came with it states in CAPITAL PRINT not to use synthetic lube.
I believe that EATON says the same thing about their posi unit. I called to

Re: [Chevelle-list] ground up order

2007-08-03 Thread Bob Haggard
They must have found a set after I spoke with them on Monday because I received
the trim moulding on Thursday. The quality is POOR so I plan to call Monday
and ask if I can return them. The corners on the top edges of the windshield
are rough and stretched looking where they made the bend. Overall polish
doesn't compair to OEM parts so I hope to find a good set in Charlotte next
month or Moultrie, Ga or Daytona in November. I was excited when I saw that
someone was carrying repos but like a lot of repoduction parts that are
probably made in China, these don't make the grade.
Maybe the quality problem is the reason Ground Up delayed the order, these look
like they may have been returned.

I don't know about the ride height but I'll be on the tour. We went 3 cities
in 2005, 5 last year and plan to make the whole trip this year.
My 70 Nova was a little too low in the front due to one coil removed from the
springs so I replaced all 4. It raised it close to 2 in the front and 0 in
the rear so the 37 year old leafs were just fine and I waisted my $$$. I
perfered the old stance but I was afraid to make a 2,800 mile trip since it
already had battle scars on the oil pan.

Dynacorn is nothing more than a wholesaler for Golden Legion parts. The

Folks - I am asking for some expertise on this issue - sorry it is
long, but it is a good read.

I noticed that in Ground-Up Restorations, there are 2 different
quality levels of new repop fenders for the 1971-1972 Chevelles. One, part
 # RF-71L, is listed at $260, and is not listed as a GM Restoration Part.
Another, part # RF-71GML, is listed at $319, and is supposedly newly
retooled, and offer a more definitive fit, with sharper edges. It is
listed as the GM Restoration Part for our cars.

Now OPG has similar fenders - but only one part # for a left front
fender - PZ00611, listed at $269 (and on sale right now for $220). I also
took the time to notice that their full quarters for the same car using
original GM tooling, and listed as the finest quality available, and the
only ones licensed by GM - for the low-low price of only $400. That is
about $200 less then everyone else. As a skeptic, I placed a call and
talked to Jason on the other line. This is what he said.

Question: Your competitors have two repop fenders available, one that
is standard quality, and one that is newly retooled and the only GM
Restoration Part, with better body lines. Which are your $260 fenders -
the good ones, or the bad ones. Who manufactures your fenders?

Answer: They are both the same fenders. There is only one
manufacturer in the world, and that is Dynacorn. The panels are licensed by
GM for restoration purposes, stamped overseas, and distributed by Goodmark
and Cars Inc., among others. The tooling is wildly expensive, and there is
only one set of tooling for these fenders in the world. If someone else is
advertising two qualities of fenders, they are selling the same fender piece
for two prices. Beware of these guys.

Question: Okay, assuming that is true, you are stating that your
fenders are the GM licensed fenders, the best available, made with the
best tooling in the industry, and manufactured by Dynacorn and shipped
directly to your warehouse in Huntington Beach, Ca?

Answer: Yes - that is why we have the best price around for that
fender and are able to offer it to you for great savings.

Question: I also noticed a similar situation with your full
quarters for the same car. You are supposedly selling the best available
GM Restoration quarters for $200 less then the competition. What gives?

Answer: Same issue. Only one set of tooling, and Dynacorn has it.
These are the only GM Restoration quarters (the same being offered by
Goodmark), and we offer a substantial savings because they are shipped
directly to San Diego and we truck them up to LA. That savings goes
straight to you. Oh - and they are on sale too right now. Get your order

For the record - I would prefer a factory fender, but cannot find one
that would not cost over $500 after it is fixed and on the car. OPG also has
great prices on the hoods, and all other body parts. Are they the same parts
others are selling for 25-30% higher?

[Chevelle-list] ring pinion

Any bad experiences with Yukon gears and Auburn Posi? Since I finished my car
in June I have been running the stock 2.56 rear end with RamJet 350 and 700r4
transmission and at 60 mph in lockup mode it is only turning 1,400 rpm's.
Replacing the 2.56 with 3.36 will increase the rpm's to 1,840 which will make
the engine run better. This car is a highway cruiser that won't see the drag
strip anytime soon. I am averaging 20 mpg and hope this doesn't change much.

only 1,450 @ 60 mph now and the 3.08 should raise that to 1,740. This car has
a RamJet 350/350 and it's my highway cruiser.
Any recommendations on Brand name I should buy and distributor where I can get
the best deal for my money?
I want something quiet?

Re: [Chevelle-list] engine question

2006-09-11 Thread Bob Haggard
I have one sitting in my garage that I invested over $2k in several years ago
and I haven't been able to sell. It has about 10k miles on it. There is
someone out there that would like a correct numbers matching engine for a
restored car but they are difficult to find. I would like to install it in a
rat rod one of these days if I can't find a buyer.

It is a beautiful car but the exhaust system was the first thing I noticed too.
I have been the victim of a lousey muffler job that I am still running after

It does look very nice, but the only piece that seems out of place in this
nicest Yenko replica is the cheap exhaust. It looks to me like a job by
the local muffler shop, and a few years ago by the looks of those clamps and
Flowmasters. For a car that is supposed to be that great, I would have
expected the mufflers to be lines up flat and cleanly, and maybe even be
 stainless or at least cleaner.

The car may be perfect otherwise, or perhaps there are other hidden
shortcuts and the exhaust system is just the clue.

I personally would not buy it because it is too clean. I want a car I can
drive and not care if I mess up some original marking or sticker. If I saw
it a show, I would admire it as it does look great.

Re: [Chevelle-list] OT: AC Upgrade - 1970 GMC 1500 Truck

2006-06-30 Thread Bob Haggard
I just installed a Classic Auto Air unit in the dash of my 70 Nova and it's a
much better unit than Vintage Air. The firewall is flat and the AC unit
replaced the heater so everything is in the dash. It uses the existing
AC/Heater controls and the fan motor is quiet, similar to factory AC. I would
definitly recommend them over the other companies. The instructions were okay
but could use a few changes on the Nova but that may not apply to other makes
and models. I have a little experience from many years ago so I didn't have
much trouble with the installation.

Last November I bought a new SBC short water pump for my crate motor
installation. By April 1 it was finally running, but with an occasional
whine at idle. I recently found it to be the water pump, by using a
stethoscope. When I told them about it they said it was too bad but the
warrantee is only 90 days. The solution: I bought another one and will
return the faulty November pump in the June box.

Re: [Chevelle-list] hypothetical car flood question

2006-03-09 Thread Bob Haggard
I can tell you from experience (several times) that if you sink your boat that
is exactly what you need to do as soon as you get it out of the water. If you
do not have the time to drain the fluids and get it started then they tell you
to leave it submerged till you do have time (fresh water). The same should be
true for automobiles although a 2-cycle outboard engine is much easier to
service.

just water and a scotchbrite sponge.
After I took these I used a soft abrasive disk on my die grinder and
cleaned up the crap on the filler neck and the
few spots where the undercoating had gotten 'stringed' across... I may
go ahead and hit the entire tank with the pad...
I was planning on just painting it black before I put it back in... any
other suggestions?? There is NO rust on the tank
at all... I'd thought of POR, but that may be overkill... I don't ever
intend for the car to see the rain... it'll only be driven
every couple of weeks, etc... Any suggestions?

Kinda hard to understand the price of the ECU but I guess it's whatever the
market will bear. Cost of this project is getting outta hand but I love the
way my 98 GMC and 00 AstroVan shift. The computer will not be controling the
engine and transmission like the new vehicles but I understand that you program
it with a laptop. Guess I will give it a try, now I gotta find a higher stall
convertor. Since the 1st gear is so low in the 4L60, maybe it's not necessary.
I'm sure there will be some slippage (rear tires). Thanks for the replies.

TH350and 400's can hold up under that power but I am guessing you like
the idea of overdrive. An Add-on ECU is required for the swap. They
can be a little pricey but the end product will be a nice drivetrain
combo for you. A friend recently swapped a 4 cyl diesel into a

Re: [Chevelle-list] It's ALIVE!!!

2006-02-13 Thread Bob Haggard
If you don't want to drop the tank then syphon out all you can get then add
some good premium gas and maybe some additives, I guess. The rubber fuel line
at the tank is subject to rot and leak in old cars so you may want to check it
or just replace it. I drove my 63 Nova for a couple years before I bought a
new tank and I could not believe the crap in the old tank. I guess the filter
was doing a good job otherwise it would have stopped up the carb. I live on a
lake and every spring the lake is littered with boats that stop running after
using last years fuel which usually includes lots of water from condensation.

[Chevelle-list] crate motor prices question

2006-02-08 Thread Bob Haggard
I'm in the market for a 350 GMPP crate motor and everyone seems to be selling
at the same prices which must be the Generals MSRP. Does anyone know of any
discounted deals out there?

Re: [Chevelle-list] Barrett Jackson

2006-01-21 Thread Bob Haggard
They said tonight that they only take 1 out of 3 cars to sell at the BJ auction
so that would mean that what you see for sale is the real cream of the crop,
either rare or 100 point cars. It appears to me that some of the custom cars
that have sold ($80k) are probably very good deals. If I owned a Z-28 or 66
Chevelle with less that 12k miles I'm not sure what kind of money I would
expect for it, but I probably would not sell it anyway. If I had a lot of
extra cash to invest in a toy I would be there bidding too, but I don't so I'm
just watching TV.

I agree on the point that the market is going crazy. I thought last night
was nuts ($205k for a z28?)..but when you think about it, certain cars like
that Z28 or the '66 Chevelle are very rare finds, so what is the real value?
I've seen it posted here before that it's whatever someone will pay for it.
Not sure that's the way I'd go looking for an investment, but most of those
guys aren’t worried about that. It does bother me

As far as a 340 Cuda not being a performance car, I'll assume you've never
driven a 340 car or maybe you did and it wasn't running right. It's like
saying a small block 327 Chevelle isn't one. That little motor gets up and
goes. It doesn't have to have a Hemi to be a performance/muscle car.

I really have mixed emotions about what is happening with the classic

car market. On one hand it's really great to see guys make good money

selling their cars, but I just think the rich crowd has gone way

overboard. These guys have priced the middle class blue collar car

collect/DRIVER (like me) out of the market. These guys even paid 61 Gs

for a 340 ci 71 Cuda. It was nice, but not even a performance car

except for a 4 sp. The real /hot rods/ just seemed to break even. My

Speaking of Corvette's-- (Happy Ending)

"COLD CASE" FOR CARA Savannah, GA man was reunited with his car, a new 1968 Corvette convertible, that was stolen from his New York City parking garage in January 1969. A customs agent, doing routine checks on containers in a California port being shipped overseas, got a hit on a VIN number he ran for the Vette, headed for Sweden. When detectives in New York City began working the case, there were bets of steak dinners floating around over whether or not they would be able to find the car’s rightful owner. Sure enough, they did. The look on the guy’s face was priceless as he was reunited with his car, as was the cracking of his voice as he talked about it. There is no indication of where the car has been in the past 30-some years, because no one has apparently tried to insure it or license it. By
the way, a mint condition 68 Vette convertible will fetch you around $100,000 these days.

Sounds familiar. My father worked for the railroad and we use to go down to
the railroad yard and watch the new cars roll by in the early 60's. A few
years later they put side panels on the railroad cars so you couldn't see much
but that was to protect the cars from vandals (or striking railroad workers)
from throwing rocks, etc. and damaging the new cars. I think that is when I
first became a Chevy fan although my dad always bought Pontiacs.

Hi Larry, I've got a hidden switch wired into the neutral safety switch.
When it is in the off position and the key is turned it acts like you
are trying to start it while in gear, nothing at all happens. As for
hood lock, I have a small tab welded to the hood latch lever that is
below the front bumper with a hole drilled in it that lines up to a hole
that is drilled in the bottom side of the bumper. All it takes then is a
short shank padlock through the bumper and through the hood latch lever
and tada one locked hood. All this is done to try and protect someone
from taking what we have worked so hard to get, maintain and enjoy. I
was told something a long time ago, a lock is nothing but something to
keep an honest person honest, if they want it they will get it no matter
how many locks you may put on it.

2005-09-25 Thread Bob Haggard
According to the body shop owner where my car is in paint shop jail you can
top coat it with epoxy primer. I would recommend that you sand it some first
to rough it up. They recommend their tie-coat-primer but I have noticed some
blistering when it is used before acrylic enamel but it may not have been
primed first with primer sealer before the top coat was applied, (another paint
shop jail story). The instructions on the can say to let it dry before top
coating it in order to let it cure, if I remember correctly. I topcoated it
with primer before it cured and the POR15 blistered thru the primer, (then I
read the instructions). Call them and ask about epoxy primer, I think that's
your best bet.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Trailered vs. Non-Trailered Cars at shows

2005-08-28 Thread Bob Haggard
Instead of a trailer queen class you can have a driven class that people
can enter, it sounds better. I don't have the cash to buy a truck and trailer
and I enjoy driving my old cars. I guess if I spent 6 figures to paint one
then I would want to trailer it too so I have nothing against them, I just
don't have the income to support it. I have stopped going to shows except for
a couple each year and usually attend a Saturday night cruise 2 or 3 times each
month. This year I have been on the Power Tour and will be at Daytona for the
Turkey Fest and a trailer would be a PITA to deal with.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Trailered vs. Non-Trailered Cars at shows

 Hey Guys,
I?m looking for some input from folks who trailer their cars and also those
who drive their cars to shows/events for competition.
 Here?s the question(s)?.
Should event sponsors separate the trailered vs. the non-trailered cars on
 the show field?
How would that make you trailered guys feel? Isolated? Would you just not
 attend that show?
 How about you ?drivers??
In the long run, would this cause more problems or solve them?
How are other event sponsors handling this?
This is an issue of which those who run a show faces over and over. We do
3-4 shows a year (some points driven, some not) and inevitably, after each
 one
I get quite a few inputs (well actually complaints) that this should be. As
far as I know, the late great chevy is the only show around that does
 separate the two.
It?s pretty well known that if you drive your car, in just about every case,
you cannot compete against a car this is trailered. The trailered car will
take home the trophy (or at least first place) in just about every case. A
driven car will show signs of wear, no matter how careful one is. Rock
 chips,
dirt, grime, discolored exhaust, etc? such is life.
In a points driven show this can be critical as a winner could be declared
by as little as 1 point. In a ?participant Choice? or ?Top 40? show, I
believe it still plays a part, but not as much.
Not trying to start a war here, but looking for some ideas and opinions.
You can reply offline if you wish your opinion not be made public.

 Larry Clint,

We landed in Miami, and picked up the super special rental car, an amazing
corolla with four doors :O), then we worked our way over to naples and did
the coast up to tampa and then to Orlando, then to Daytona (I love that
place) and back to Orlando and down to miami again and two weeks and lots of
dollars later flew home with the suitcases stuffed with car parts and
clothes and things that were either cheaper or unavailable here in Europe.
All in all about $9-10K went out this time and that includes like $1-1,5K of
car parts and tickets and everything.

For my Chevelle I had four complete qa-1 coilovers and a much needed digital
 protractor plus some small stuff.
Then I carried 20lbs of chrome moly rod ends for a friend and some 35lbs of
msd dragster ignition parts for another friend.
Then due to the bad weather we shopped and shopped and shopped :o)

I also managed to see the end of the power tour and to meet Herb and his
friends, and we spent the night together in Kissimee at a restaurant and
drinking a few beers in old town.

 Have Fun

Just returned from the Power Tour and I'm catching up on my mail. I'm 57 and
I've never had a car I didn't modify/personilize to look like I wanted it to
look. The 70 Nova little ole lady car I now have in the paint shop will have
the SS look because I like the SS options. I don't want a 6-cyl car with
monoleaf springs, no sway bar and drum brakes. I won't even consider trying to
sell it as a true SS Nova, I promise.

I'm in the camp that if you want to do ANYTIHNG with your car, it's your
business. This is the way I look at it:

 1) It's my car
 2) It's my money
 3) It's my time

Those that have a greater then thee attitude about original cars, all I can
say is they get the money for them when they sell, and there is a big
difference. So what's the diff? Just relax...

Now, trying to pass it off with a bogus build sheet is crap, if not out
 right fraud.

Oh, and my car? The guy that sold it to me claimed it to be an SS, but it
had no documentation and a Washington state vin on the door jam. Is it an
SS? I doubt it, and I never refer to it as such. To be honest all I was
looking for was a clean, straight car and I liked the way it looks with the
SS trim (especially the hood). I don't know if I would had gone to the
trouble to add it all if it was not already there. Oh and I'd didn't offer
or pay SS money for it either.

Besides Baer brakes, a Tremec 5 speed and a 454 wasn't on the option list in
'66 :-) I know what I want my '66 to be. Not a clone, certainly not
original in the sense that the diehards think of, but original as in one
of a kind, built from what my vision thinks it should be.

Might come a day when we wished we'd see more Chevelles on the road,
regardless of what's been done to them. Enjoy the rides, guys - that's all
 what it's really all about...

 Long Live Chevelles!

I just see it as the SS cars had a lot of the better equipment. I bought
a Malibu because I don't have the money to purchase some rusted out real ss
for double what I got mine for. I'm completing a frame off restoration for
the car and it will be a SS when I'm done. Just to save myself incase I do
have to sell it some day a clone brings in more money than most malibus so
id rather put my money where it has a chance. If someone trys to pull there
car off as a real ss and it's a clone that's dumb, but you have to be dumber
not to be able to spot it. THeres nothing wrong with people building these
cars how they choose. Id rather seen 20 clones then 1 rusted out Chevelle
getting crushed at some junkyard. Im 17.

This is why I think guys, especially ones newer to classic cars, are silly
for trying to buy original numbers matching cars. What exactly are you
paying for when it can be duplicated and faked and be indistinguishable from
a 'real' SS? What defines a 'real' SS anyway? One that has all the correct
SS options, or only one that left the factory that way?

What makes a '70 SS454, all original, worth so much more than a '70 Malibu
with a 454/TH400/12-bolt posi ? If you're buying and selling these cars to
make money, I have no pity for them getting taken on cloned SS.

With that said, when I finally re-do the body and paintwork on my '70
Malibu, I'll probably add SS stripes, Cowl hood, the rear bumper insert and
paint my grill black with the stainless trim, although I probably will keep
my idiot-light dash. With my EFI small block and Hotchkis suspension, no
one will mistake it for a 'real' SS, but it'll run circles around any 'real'
SS. I'll build my car the way I choose, much like Clint said. I'm 32.

plan on keeping the car for a very long time due to waiting 36 years to get

I have one that I paid $25 for that you can have, plus shipping, if you want

I also have a stock cast iron intake for a Holly that I have $50 invested in
that I probably will never use since I decided I prefer modified (lots of
chrome) over the stock look. I'll get the casting numbers for you if
interested. Both intakes have the oil filler hole/pipe in the front next to

Re: [Chevelle-list] Age, it's only a number....

2005-04-26 Thread Bob Haggard

I'm 57 and have yet to have the pleasure of owning a Chevelle. I'm a Chevy fan
and I'm owned just about every other Chevrolet built from Vega's to Impalla's
and hope to someday find the Chevelle I want. I was looking when I found a 70
Skylark Custom little old lady car with only 37k miles. I presently own a
restored-modified 63 Nova and I'm presently restoring a 70 Nova and the 70
Skylark. Don't boot me off the list, I'm still looking but I can't handle
another project right now till I finish the ones I started.

I bought an Edelbrock EDL-2102, 204/214 duration, .402/.442 lift and I'm real
happy with it. I got it new from a friend that decided to get a bigger cam for
his 350. It has good low end torque and a little lop but nothing like the
first cam I installed that had no low end and didn't start making power till it
hit about 2,500 rpms.

Hi guys. I have an intake in my garage that I do not know the origin
of. If someone has a casting # book, I would really appreciate any help. It
is a dual plane high-rise aluminum intake for a smallblock with 3932472 GM
cast into it. There is the slightest chance that the 9 is an 8, but I am
pretty sure it is a 9. As always, thanks for all of your help!

P.S.Sorry about the OPG reference. I have only ordered from them once,
but did not have a problem. It was some body bolts, probably something that
is always in stock I guess.

 Thanks again

Re: [Chevelle-list] coolant in oil (not Chevelle)

2005-03-05 Thread Bob Haggard
Driven a couple of weeks isn't good. I had a Vega with water in the oil and it
spun a rod bearing and ruined the crankshaft. If it runs rough when you first
start it then starts to run smooth then water is leaking into a cylinder due to
head gasket, most likely. Don't just replace the head gasket without having
the heads check to see they are warped. I have seen cracks in the block in the
lifter galley above the lifters. If you pull the heads look in this area for
signs of antifreeze. If the car is still in good condition it may be time for
a crate motor.

 Hi all,
I have a family member who owns an 1983 Caprice (305 V8) that began using
 coolant.
I couldn't find any external leaks, then checked the oil, it was milky in
appearance and the level was over full indicating coolant getting into the
 oil and pan.
 Now what?
I don't know if it's a head gasket, cracked casting somewhere, or what.
I'm sure there are a multitude of places for a leak to develop.
It could be a simple gasket problem or something more severe.
I don't have a clue as to how to diagnose this problem.
Even if I tear the thing down, I wonder if I'll see any indications of where
 the leak is coming from.
And, what could be the extent of engine damage with this thing being driven a
couple weeks with watered down oil.
Any suggestions would be appreciated on how to find the leak.
As always thanks for your expertise.

Re: Re: POR-15 vs powdercoating was Re: [Chevelle-list] Motor Mounts

2005-03-03 Thread Bob Haggard
The company I use for powder coating insists that they sand blast the metal
before coating it for the same reason, adhesion. I hope they coated it
promptly to prevent rust as you stated.
Bob Haggard

 From: Trooper [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Also, even though POR-15 stands for paint over rust it has excellent
adhesion to freshly sandblasted metal. The blasting gives the metal a micro
rough finish that produces great tooth for adhesion. POR-15 also has the
rust inhibitors not found in powdercoat if unseen rust is incidentally
 painted over.

Now with all this said, my last comment is: These frames have endured 30
plus years unpainted. During this time a large number of these years were
spent on harsh road conditions. They were rarely pampered the way we pamper
them today. So my guess would be that any good prep (and I stress good prep)
and overcoat, be it paint or POR or powder, should last a long long time.

 Good luck,
 Trooper

I have to be honest, I dont know if they can get the inside of the frame or
not. I know when I was looking into getting it painted that they said they
would dip the frame in chemicals and then use a spray gun on a hose that
sprayed at 90 degrees from itself. As far as powder coating the inside, I
 honestly don't know.

The trunk pan drops off on the right and left sides behind the rear wheels and
the bottom edge of the drop off panel is welded to the rear quarter panel. On
my 70 Nova, water leaking from the back window sat in this little trough and
rusted thru the drop off panel, the rear quarter and the inner and outter
wheelhouse. The only way I got to it was to cut out the lower portion of the
rear quarter panel between the rear wheel and bumper. I replaced it along with
the making patches for the wheelhouses then I installed a rear quarter patch
panel. My first experience at doing this and turned out pretty good but took
me A LONG TIME due to inexperience.

That is interesting. My 350/350 with TH200-4R dynoed a little over 250hp at
the rear wheels last summer in Bowling Green, KY. The next day we went to the
drag strip and it went 13.86 sec. and 102 mph with poor traction. I only ran
it twice for fear of breaking something so far from home. I was dissapointed
with the 250 at the rear wheels like you, but pretty happy with the 1/4 mile
time. Not bad for a show car.

I just had my 66 dynoed. I had put in a worked 454. The desk top dyno quoted
 500HP at the crank.
This was done at 5500 ft elevation.
The results were: 301 HP at the wheels. I was hoping for at least 330HP.
The car has a TH400 tranny.
Does this sound about right to you guys?
How much does the 400 use?

New ones are about $5 at swap meets, $7.50 catalog price. GM price $22.95 for
the whole part. $6.95 for a window crank knob kit. These are Classic Ind.

I'm not a pureist so I go with the $5 replacments.

The one on the driver door has been removed when they repaint. I have been

the back end but I was unable to find anything there while I had all the rear
suspension out. The folks at the department of transport seem to know where
