Last call on the plates for you California guys.  There is a reserve -
optimistically priced at $750.  I know it's high, but I will check to see if I
can remove the reserve close to the end if the bids are better.  This is the
only new Z series plate on eBay.

I’m not sure, but since they are never used you might have a chance to use them
to register in California.  They are likely worth a lot if so.  I don’t know
the rules.  What are the letters?  If they are 1970, they might be too new.  I
found this:On July 1, 2009, California expanded their YOM program to add
1963-1969 passenger cars, and 1963-1972 pickup trucks. Vehicles manufactured
before 1963 are still eligible. The YOM program allows owners of these classic
cars to register old plates that match up with the model year of their vehicle.

You'll need a year sticker or metal year tab, and the plates must be matching
pairs with "cleared" (not in use) numbers to be eligible - meaning there is no
record on file that the same sequence is in use on another set of plates (as
California sometimes re-issued the same numbers/letters on different year
plates).  Search online for “California YOM” and you will find a lot of info
out there. And read online here: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg352.htm

[Chevelle-list] Electrical Short?

2011-06-02 Thread Larry Williams
My 65 has an old after market wire loom.  I have just noticed that the brake
light circuit has a short.  I have blown two 20 amp fuses for that circuit.
The running and turn indicator circuits appear to be normal.  I have bought a
new brake light switch, but have not installed it yet.  I can't  see how this
switch can caused the fuses to blow unless it is just a bad connection.  I will
check the light plugs for a ground short today.  Hoping not to have to trace
the wire from the fuse box.  Anything I missed?

You are right.  Your hydraulics should be zero plus a 1/4 to 1/2 turn turn

So, the story is I had a collapsed lifter as I suspected and also a broken
intake valve spring that I didn't know about.

I also want to address the issue of adjusting valves. It was said here that
"turn until it stops tapping + 1/4 turn" was an old rule for solid lifters. It
was pointed out to me that with solid lifters, if you go the extra 1/4 turn you
are bound to bend a rod, because it has nowhere to go. Makes sense. So, the old
1/4 turn rule seems to be for hydraulic lifters only.

Depending on your state there are laws
about removing the VIN tags, I removed mine during the restoration and I am
currently looking for the correct rivets. I contacted trimtags.com but haven’t
gotten a reply yet. They make replacement cowl tags but not Vin tags. You need
that tag if you ever want to sell the vehicle so if you think your painter
removed it ask him for it, I don’t know how you will get a replacement
and it may be illegal for him to even possess it depending on your state laws.
The
numbers on the frame on a 65 are on the top of the left frame rail between the
last 2 rear body mounts.

Good advice, Rick. A reputable local trans shop is the way I'd go,
too.

Ditto on your gear ratio selection... The 2.73 won't cut it with
the overdrive trans. I had 3.08 gears in my '66 wagon w/700R4
trans, and it never was in its "sweet spot" while cruising @ 70
mph. Changed to a 3.42 and the motor is a lot happier, plus
mileage picked up about 1.5 - 2 mpg to boot! Since less throttle
is now required to maintain any given speed, I had to reprogram
the ECM for my Holley FI system, but it was only small tweaks in
the light cruise mode.

Also with 2.73 gears and overdrive you'll be cruising at 1200RPM
(more or less) - probably not the sweet spot for most motors. I am
running 3.31 gears and cruise right at 1700 RPM - 3.73 would
probably be better for me.

[Chevelle-list] How to sell a Chevelle

2010-05-07 Thread Larry Shaw
I have a 1972 Malibu Convertible that I have owned since 1987.

My son and I have done some work on it and I've had some done
professionally. We've decided to consider selling it to free space in my
garage and look at other projects.

We've had a lot of the rust replaced with patch panels and a new front floor
pan. It has a relatively new paint job, new upholstery, and a new top. It
does need some additional work with new rust issues with the rear seat floor
pan and trunk floor pan. It also has a need to replace the top frame on the
windshield where the top attaches because of rust.

How can we establish a value and what is the best way to try to sell the
car?

All of the drive train components are original. For the last several years,
it has been garaged.

We are located in the Seattle area.

This is right after a front end rebuild (Moog parts) and disc brake

brakes. Before all this, it was 100,000 mile loose, but normal.

I figured the alignment guy used too much negative caster but that

of a bearing. So i call them back, thay were very helpful about the bushing.Thay check with there " GM " tech and said that is what you get now. A
better piece instead of the bearing. So thats what I'm doinig this weekend.

There are bushings/bearings inside the column but the problem is
going to be finding the components. Classic Muscle shows a few
components still available but most say "call" or discontinued. Guess
its possible that once you have the unit apart, you could match the
components to an off the shelf item. Good luck!

Re: [Chevelle-list] Alignment Question-Follow up

2010-03-11 Thread Larry Williams
Took the car for a short ride back to the shop to retrieve the stock
sway bar (like I really needed more old parts). The car did wander, and
I noticed about 1 1/2 to 2" play in the steering wheel. I remembered
that the mechanic stated that he tightened the steering box. This was
going thru my head as I'm driving to the shop. Part of the work order
was for them to weld the coupler to the steering column where it
connects to the rag joint. This piece is pressed on at the factory, and
was loose. I actually had the car towed to the shop because of this.
Drivable but dangerous. If I fails you crash. When I picked the car up
I didn't look at the coupler to see if it was welded. When I arrived
back at the shop, I opened the hood and didn't see any weld. I scooped
up the sway bar and asked the mechanic about the welding and got a blank
stare. He asked the shop owner and he didn't know if it had been done.
I dung out the receipt and the welding was the second item on the
instructions. The owner said he dropped the ball and appollogised (sp).
The mechanic welded up the piece and I went on my way. The car drove
perfect. Will I go back to the shop? Yes. Why? Because I like them
and they are honest. But I will go elsewhere for alignments.

Today is cruise day. It's a beautiful day in the Calif central valley.
But first I'll put the car on the lift and check some bolts...

them to do a complete rebuild on my tractor engine. I put my rebuilt
on the tractor, had an instant rod knock, they said I stressed the 2"
crank bearing when tightening the alt belt and caused a rod knock -
impossible I told them. This went on the whole summer. The credit
card company contacted Briggs and Stratton and they too said it was
impossible for me to have damaged a bearing by tightening the belt
causing a rod knock. Briggs and Stratton stepped in, made the
Simplicity dealer install a brand new engine and I still only paid
the initial rebuild cost.

I suspect the alignment folks dialed in too much negative caster, the
spec for a '65 SS is 0 to -.5 degree. For other '65 Chevelles it is
-.5 to -1.5 degrees. More caster makes them track straight.

[Chevelle-list] Automotive Lift

2009-07-18 Thread Larry Hickman
The side walls are 16', so height is not an issue.

Jerry, I live in NW MO. I am also planning on radiant floor heat, so anything
you have learned, I would appreciate. What is the fuel source for your boiler
?  My options for fuel are propane, waste oil, and a corn burning furnace.

Thanks, Jerry, Eric & John

Hi Larry...

I built a new garage a few years ago and installed a Back Yard Buddy four post
lift.  Lift is great, works well.  You will need 11' - 12" ceiling clearance.
Not sure if I would do a four post again.  Might have more flexibility with a
two post.  Don't know where you live but I live in cold country so I installed
in floor heat driven by a boiler system and that is great for the winter.  Can
keep the temp at 55-60 and it is comfortable.

Good luck,

Jerry Wells

Build your building with 12' walls.  My dad's garage has 10' walls and you
cannot take his four post lift all the way up (with a vehicle on it.)

Eric

My friend Jack put in a two-post and it works great. I've had my El Camino on
it many times. I don't remember what brand it is. If you want something that
doesn't take up space while you're not using it, try leaving the car on the
lift!

I gave Tom Rightler a catalog

You may also want to look at waste oil heaters, especially if it's going to be
an unattached building. The heaters are not cheap but the fuel is free.

So any idea's for engine combo's? I don't have a bunch of money to
spend on this but I would like to bump up the performance of it. Right
now it's a really stock 454, 8:1 compression. I'm thinking about
bumping up the compression to 9:1, adding a cam, and if I can afford
them, maybe some aluminum heads. I think that would really waken up
this motor. But basically this is a street car that's cruised 99.9% of
the time. So I want the drive-ability.

Rick, this was from an engine site I found...

*Chevy's specification for the rocker arm nuts are 1 turn down

a little rough until the lifter bleeds down.*

*I would suggest turning all valves to zero lash, no ticking. Then
turn all valves a ¼ turn and let it recover. Keep doing this until
all are 1 turn or 360°.*

BTW - Speaking of valve adjustment: Is 1/4 turn after slop

That may work if you already have them adjusted, but
if you do it that way initially after having the
rocker arms off, you might damaged the lifters or the
camshaft. If the rockers are too tight, you risk
wiping out cam lobes.

I like to adjust the valves with the motor warm
and running. Back each one off, one at a time,
then tighten 1/4 turn past when they stop
clattering. An old valve cover with the top cut
off comes in handy. They used to sell clips that
attached to the rockers and plugged the push rods
to keep the mess down. You can do each side in
about a minute that way.

You don't need to bring each cylinder up. The
pressure from the hose is plenty to keep up.
Bring #1 up so it so it's on the firing

position before you do anything and leave the
engine rest there. Makes it much easier to
readjust the valves once you're done. It's a

Re: [Chevelle-list] BB Motor Mount Question

2009-05-01 Thread Larry Williams
For those who are interested, I decided to notch the rear of the cross
member to accommodate the current mounting. We are using a die grinder
and will cut out the rear face going back about 1 1/2" and weld back in
the original piece with a small gusset on the side. The width is right
up to the motor mount on the cross member - close to 12". I think it
will be clean and strong.

The front engine mount is more than a 1" back from the stock location,

Just loosen the distributor bolt, pick it up, and turn it clockwise to

Fire it up and set the timing. If it way off, go back the other way and
