I'm not sure if they still do it but the Goodmark installation shop is

I appreciate the support provided by the list in both direct support I
have requested and the good information posted that I had not given any
thought about the need. It's time once again to seek your advice. The 67
Chevelle is mostly stripped and I have found significant rust and Bondo

Tackling full qtr replacement at this time may be outside my expertise.
Since the plan is to do a frame off on the car anyway can anyone

I know I needed this reminder since Sears isn't always my
first choice.
Amazing when you think of how long the war has lasted and
they haven't
withdrawn from their commitment. Could we each buy at least
one thing at
Sears this year?

How does Sears treat its employees who are called up for
military duty? By
law, they are required to hold their jobs open and
available, but nothing
more. Usually, people take a big pay cut and lose benefits
as a result of
being called up.

Sears is voluntarily paying the difference in salaries and
maintaining all
benefits, including medical insurance and bonus programs,
for all called
up reservist employees for up to two years.

I submit that Sears is an exemplary corporate citizen and
should be
recognized for its contribution. I suggest we all shop at
Sears, and be
sure to find a manager to tell them why we are there so the
company gets
the positive reinforcement it well deserves.

Pass it on.

Decided to check this before I sent it forward. So I sent
the following

I received this e-mail and I would like to know if it is

This is their answer to my e-mail:

I was gonna say the same thing as Dan. As for the paperwork details, are
you close enough to your state license/title office? I'd ask them exactly
what you would need. I;d also have the seller send the title, bill of

should be no issue of it getting lost.

If I understand you what you are saying is that when you try to start the

If this is your problem then you need the check the starter. Either replace the
starter drive inside the starter or replace the starter as an assembly.

Hope this helps.

Ok here is the latest problem. First let me say that i have replaced the
distributor cap, rotor, wires, plugs, ignition module, ignition switch, and
coil, all twice. The issue is that when I drive the car, as long as the car is
hot, it starts up just fine. However, when I allow the car to sit and cool off
for several hours or overnight, the car spins but will not crank. After trying
to crank it a few times, if i let it sit for another several hours, it will
fire right up. Then it cranks fine for a few days then it starts all over
again. I don't know what else to replace. I was just told yesterday that it may
be the "pick-up coil" in the actual distributor. Driving me crazy. Any thoughts?

  Hi Guys,

My hot restart problem happened again Saturday while on a VCCA club tour.
Needless to say I was not pleased when my 2005 crate 350 with HEI cranked
strongly but refused to start. In two previous episodes it started 20
minutes after opening the hood. This time I waited 30 minutes and when it
still wouldn't start called the Hagerty service folks and had it flatbedded
the 13 miles to home. Naturally it started instantly after being deposited
in my garage.

Today I replaced the HEI module and coil for the awesome total of $38 from
my local Kragen/Shucks/Checker store, drove it 30 minutes, shut it off 30
minutes and it started just fine. Cured? Maybe.

  Thanks for the help.

  Hi Guys,

Thanks to those who were big help when installing a new 2005 GMPP crate
350 in my 1965 Chevelle Malibu SS. It's been running perfectly for 6,000
miles but twice in the last month refused to start after being driven more
than ten miles and stopped for 20 minutes.

It cranks fast but does not fire. Fuel comes from the accelerator pump
and the choke is open. I tried cranking ten seconds with the accelerator on
the floor and tried pumping a couple of times. No go.

After letting it sit 20 minutes with the hood open and the air cleaner off
it fires instantly. My guess is there is a temperature related ignition
problem but for every time it doesn't start it starts just fine dozens of
times.

Has anyone else had this problem? Or know a solution?

  Thanks,

I disagree about flex fans, I have used them for thirty years. I have had
factory blades come off and slice through steel fan shrouds. I feel clutch
fans cause drag, lose horse power and shorten pump life.

Don't get touchy about the 160 thermostat they make them for a reason.

A stock set up is great if everything is factory specs.

A 160 thermostat won't fix anything. It's overheating because the temp of
the coolant is higher than that of the thermostat at all times menaing it's
staying open and coolant is not staying in the radiator to cool down. There
is a such thing as running too cold. Flex fans are junk...period. They
flow LESS air then the RPMs are in the mid range. You should be running a
180-185 thermostat in a 402 along with a 19" 7 blade clutch fan and the
correct fan shroud. GM engineered this for a reason...it works. I have a
stock cooling system on my 70 SS 454 and never have overheating problems
with it. Another thing that comes into play in this situation that alot of
people don't realize is the size of the water pump pulley. Does it have the
correct one on it? Another water pump won't fix anything if the pulley is
the problem.

Test show that if you have the proper capacity radiator that copper vs
aluminum is a break even.

Go to a 160 thermostat, flush the block, make sure your hoses are not
collapsing inside (do not take out that bottom spring). Test the pressure of
your radiator cap that's important for your over flow system. If you have a
clutch fan replace with an aluminum flex fan. Make sure your fan blades come
to the back lip of your shroud.

Also if you have an automatic transmission you need a 4 core radiator.
Otherwise a 3 core should suffice. I had a 66 in which somone had put in a 2
core radiator, which should have been a 3 core. Made a big difference. Don't
forget to use 50/50 antifreeze ratio coolant also. It diffusses heat better

What I mean by overheating is that the temp rises substantially at idle and if
I let it idle long enough, it would eventually bubble over (but I never let it
get that hot). I do have a shroud and the radiator is 2 years old and is a
4-core. I have the standard clutch fan(new clutch) and also a small pusher fan
outside of the condenser.

The aluminum will help. I suggest Alumitech Reproductions...I just installed
one into my 67 Nova, and it looks beautiful, and fit perfect.
www.chevellecooling.com is the website I believe. They do make high flow water
pumps. However just because it flows more, doesn't mean its better. It might
cause it to flow too fast, in that the water wont have a chance to cool in the
radiator, making your car even hotter. What does your cooling system consist of
now? How old is your radiator? Do you have electric fans, or a clutch fan?

That will never happen as our politicians only want to give all of our
resources, jobs, technology, etc. away to other countries, and want to be
the police force of the world. They need to start thinking about their own
people for a change and not helping the entire rest of the world. Last I
heard I think was that we had U.S. troops in a little over 20 different
countries. How many countries rushed to give us aid for 911, our
hurricanes, and other natural disasters? Enough sounding off, I am just a
middle class guy who is sick and tired of being screwed by the politicians
that run this country and that if they wanted to could be helping all of the
people in this country that needs it and doesn't get it!

My two cents.

I don't know a lot about the dealings between our country and others, but
what I don't understand is if the US is the number one consumer/customer of
oil then why can't we tell oil producing nations that we will only pay $50 a
barrel (for example) take it or leave it. If they don't take the price we
offer, then we don't buy it and they're sitting on useless oil, pretty
simple. It works for Wal-Mart.

Buy a reproduction Tach specific for your car and RPM range of your motor
from True Connections in Riverside Calif. The repro's look just like the
origional - and work out of the box. They stock and sell parts for just
Chevelles. They can help make sure you are getting exactly what you want and
the tach will work. I would be very careful about buying used electrical items
off e-bay.

Yes the lower control arm pulls the upper control arm down but there's no
counter force pulling the upper control arm in the opposite direction!?
In other words, the upper control arm follows the lower and if the lower
control arm is fixed (resting on the tire or on a floor jack) so is the upper!?
Unless one lets the lower control arm hang on the upper via the caliper?

I won't touch anything unles I'm 110% sure!!!

Jim,
I'm assuming that you've removed the yoke from the transmisson end of the
driveshaft and just have u-joints attached right now? My first guess would
be to put the longer taper toward the transmission, but I'm not sure that it
really matters, unless there's some kind of clearance issue.
As for the second question, I'm just proud that I figured out that you were
talking about an HEI distributor. (It's still early for me). Usually the
vacuum port points at about a 45* angle from the firewall, and the connector
is aimed at the brake booster. Since we don't have tach-drive distributors
like the vettes, it isn't as critical to work with the rotor and housing to
get the placement perfect.

I'm even less sure about the TCS. Seems like on the vettes, there was a
sensor on the passenger side head, and I thought it only had two wires. You
might want to look at an AIM to get a better idea.

Second, HWI where dow the connection point??? Mine is pointed directly at
the power brack booster. Seems strange I though I remembered them pointing
more towards the fron. The vac port points at about a 45 degree angle across
the passenger side valve cover.

Third, wiring for TS. I don't have TCS anymore and wondered which wires went

Good deal for you. I know that you haven't had much chance to use it
yet, but: Do you really have access to the underside of the car?Does
"stuff" get in the way?I really want one, and built my garage with 10'
sidewalls & scissor trusses to give me the overhead room. My concern is
that the tracks and cross braces will get in the way of meaningful work.

I've heard of people running without a bypass hose and claim no ill side
effects. Think about it though, why did Chevrolet (or anyone else) put a
bypass hose on their engine? Most small block I know about have a built-in
bypass from the water pump to the block to allow coolant to be circulated
until the thermostat opens although the L79 uses a bypass hose as well.
Until the thermostat opens up, coolant circulates through the engine via the
bypass hose. Until the thermostat opens there's no place for the water to
go from the water pump. Maybe drilling two or three holes in the thermostat
is a way around it if the bypass hose is removed and plugged. I'm not an
engineer so I won't speculate. If it is, fine. I'd carry a spare 'stat
with holes already drilled in case the primary ever fails and you need a
quick replacement if you're just outside of Resume Speed, N.M. when/if
something goes awry.

I would not remove this hose. It is a cold start bypass. What I have done is to
get a new replacement and trim up as needed to allow it to look nice and not so
goofy. Takes some patience but well worth the effort. gm66

I asked this very same question a few years ago. If memory serves (yes,
it's questionable) that hose allows the coolant to circulate through the
block before the thermostat opens (and thus allows the coolant to go
through the radiator). The point is to prevent hot spots around the
cylinders.
So there is some utility to it, but it doesn't seem to be uncommon to
block this off.

Basically the same. The big block does not have a bolt in the front of the
engine block you can remove to thread a longer bolt into to keep the fuel
pump rod up and out of the way like the small block. The big block has a
plug below the fuel pump mounting boss to remove the fuel pump rod but you
shouldn't have to bother with that unless you want to have someone hold a
thin rod up against the fuel pump rod when you install the pump - much like
the procedure above for a small block. There is no 'adapter' plate to remove
if needed like the small block, the pump bolts directly to the machined area
on the block.

These steps should do it.

1. Ensure new pump is correct with correct fuel line sizes and
connection angles. If not correct, make it so.
2. Install gasket on new pump and set aside to dry.
3. Disconnect negative terminal on battery. (I just always do.)
4. Disconnect fuel lines on pump and be prepared for draining fuel.
5. Remove two bolts that mount the pump and remove.
6. Clean gasket mounting surface on block as needed.
7. Optional: Remove plug below fuel pump to allow access to fuel pump
rod and either place some grease on the camshaft end of rod to keep it in
place or have someone with a thin, stiff piece of wire push the rod up
against the camshaft when installing new pump. Either way, the rod needs to
be held up so arm of fuel pump can be inserted below it
8. With at least one (preferably both) bolts in the new pump, install
pump and start the two bolts evenly ensuring the fuel pump rod is properly
positioned on top of the fuel pump actuating lever.
9. Snug down the two fuel pump mounting bolts.
10. Reattach fuel lines - replace rubber line from tank line to pump if
necessary.
11. Reinstall fuel pump rod plug if removed in step 7.
12. Reconnect battery.
13. Start car and check for leaks.

I miss anything?

I know there are a few people here who have their own shops, so I figured
I'd share a small rant.

As some of you know, I'm doing a (rather slow) complete frame off resto-mod.
This will likely entail the replacement or rehab of literally everything on
the car. In other words, I will be buying a LOAD of parts and supplies for
this job.

My wife just called Summit Racing to buy some X-mas presents for my car.
She had credit card in-hand and was ready to blow a load of cash. However,
she was treated rudely by the person on the phone. They treated her like she
was some kind of dummy, so she hung up and told me.

I've been a Summit customer since I bought my first car, 15 years ago. I've
been an extremely loyal customer all this time, buying tens of thousands of
dollars worth of parts for 5 different cars.

I just gave my wife the # for Jeg's.

I am about ready to put exhaust on my 65 Chevelle, 327, hooker comp headers,
Lunati cam, 4 speed. I am at a loose as to what mufflers to put on. I ran
glasspacks on my 64, but that was 40 years ago. Now it seems as Flowmasters
are the way to go. Any ideas or help deciding as what to use, glass packs
or Flowmasters, and what Flowmaster would sound good. What do you think
about 2 1/2"" exhaust?

Also, does any one know of any swap meets around Houston any time soon?

Harlan, You asked about the oil in winter storage a week or so ago. Your
question was about contamination or acidification. Whew!!! Something like that.
I just read in this mornings paper an article which asked the very same
question. The answer was that if the intake and the exhaust are plugged off,
the oil will be as if having left it in the bottle.
Hope that is a little more reassurance for you.
Sounds logical.

I have set timing manually by setting the timing marks with the engine off.
Once they are aligned. Remove the number one plug wire insert a spark plug;
lay it on the exhaust so it is grounded. Loosen the distributor slightly and
gently turn the distributor back and forth until the plug fires. Once it
fires lock the distributor down. Start the engine check timing if the timing
jumps around or after restarting a couple of times it changes you have a bad
timing chain.

What I have always done when adjusting the timing for auto. cars is to set
the idle in park at the speed you want it in drive. Set the timing at the
"in drive" idle speed while the car is safely in park. Also adjust the idle
mixture this way. Then, increase the idle speed enough to get the desired

I had problems with the engine stalling when I put in drive which got better

I checked the timing with the car “in drive” and It actually changes, quite
a lot, 10-15*!
I had all vacuum plugged & did it “by the book” both times except for the
neutral vs drive adjustment procedure.
Maybe it’s the centrifugal advance that’s haunting me? When the RPM drops
the advance drops too much and it stalls?

I’ll double check the timing again and compare the difference between
drive/neutral adj. procedure.

Well, the guide looks good for the most part, but honestly, try this test
with the vacuum advance disconnected and plugged... Set your initial timing
(around 12* BTDC) with the car in park or neutral. Then have someone sit in
the car hold the brake and put it in gear, and check the timing again. If
the timing has changed let me know, I'll be surprised.

I also sent an email to Craig Watson, the co-author of the guide asking him
if there is a specific reason he mentions this technique. Maybe I'll learn
something new after all!

Never heard of that guide, and never heard of setting timing in drive. When
you set initial timing with the distributor hooked up, it won't make any
difference what gear the transmission is in. It is a simple relationship of
the firing mark for the #1 cylinder to top dead center of #1 cylinder.
Engine load or even speed (not taking into account for distributor advance
weights) will not change that relationship.
Does the guide give any reason why it needs to be in drive? What do they
suggest for a manual car?

The cotter pin locking in your wheel bearing is rubbing the dust cap.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] 'slightly' off topic- disc brake question.

I have a disc brake question which I'm hoping you guys
can help me with.. Only thing is, the brakes are on
my GMC Sonoma.

Today I did new rotors, wheel bearings (in and out),
seals, and pads on my truck (also did badly needed
front shocks). Thought since colder weather was on
the way, now was the time..

This is the 2nd time I've done this in the time I've
had the truck (since 2000), and it's the 2nd time I've
had this issue. With all of the new parts in place, I
went for a test drive. Overall I can feel
improvement, but from 0-10 and at deceleration, I can
feel what I want to describe as a "ticking" or
"clicking" feeling in the steering wheel. Again it's
only from 0-10 and at the very end. The rotors are
brand new, and I know they're not warped b/c it's not
that sensation I'm feeling (I know that one). I have
noticed tho that on the back of the rotor, where the
inner bearing is seated, there is what I want to call
a 'gear' with teeth that goes all the way around. I'm
wondering if the ticking I'm feeling in the steering
wheel, is because I have the discs too tight and that
gear is rubbing somewhere? I was able to spin the
discs after assembly before putting the wheel on by
hand, and they do spin but with some drag (which is
how I thought they were supposed to be).

Other point worth mentioning, I did pack all the new
bearings with fresh grease, and filled the grease
caps, so I don't think it's the bearings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, b/c it pissed
me off to feel this after spending all day working on
this truck.

Regards,

Jim

when I was a kid in Kentucky. I'm guessing that they were popular long
before I ever came across it. When I moved from KY to Baltimore, I had
quite a culture shock! LOL.
None of my MD friends have ever heard of those machines.

It's a shallow dent in the metal that will 'pop' in and out where the metal
stretched just enough. The name refers to the old metal lidded oil cans that
would do the same thing when you squeezed the sides. Does anyone remember

No not all are the same. Check the size of the pin that goes through the
cluster gear. It holds needle bearings in place in the cluster. Early
Muncies were 7/8th in. while later were a full 1 inch. You will have to
match that part to use your cluster gear etc. Also, be careful that there
is not excessive wear where the cluster shaft goes through the case at the
front. Often due to hard use many early cases were "stretched" there and
you don't want to deal with that. There is of course a way to fix it but it
is more trouble and expense. Hope this helps!

My 1965 Malibu SS-350 went to the muffler shop to diagnose a ticking noise in
the right muffler. When put on the rack it was obvious the ticking (while
idling in drive) can also be heard along the pipe forward of the muffler all
the way to the manifold.

I guessed, particularly since the idle is not perfect, was that I was hearing a
badly leaking exhaust valve. A compression check on the 2-4-6-8 bank shows
135, 140, 130, 140. This seems too good to have a significant valve leak.

It has a new GMPP Crate Engine with 500 miles since installation and the tick
has been there since initial startup.

Does anyone have an idea?

Thanks,

Probably was old grease. Use a good quality multi-lube that you use to

I am rebuilding my Z Bar. The old grease that was in it was pretty dark and
thick - almost like wheel bearing grease - could have been just old.

The grease fitting will make it easy to fill back up.

What type of grease is supposed to go in the Z Bar?

Thank you for the help!

Yes, without compression it can turn over easier. I'm still thinking the
starter is drawing too many amps, thusly solenoid keeps clicking and starter
barely turns over. I hope that's it so the car can finally be driven.gm66

I've taken the battery out of the loop and have a charger box hooked up (one
of those big rolling ones) and set it to 'start'. Its definitely giving the
power. I clamped the positive to the positive cable that runs straight to
the starter, all connections are new. The negative battery cable terminates
on the block and I've verified the ground there is ok as well as two from
the block to the frame. I just exchanged the starter so I'm going to see if
that does it.

Isn't it strange though that if I take out the plugs it turns fine or does
that just take the load off of it because there is no compression? (I'm not
an engine guy)

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Hello:perform voltage drop tests on all starter cables and negative
cables, you can use a set of booster cables to check the ground circuit of
the car, connect the negative to the battery and the other end to the
block,if the car winds over okay, the ground is the problem, you can also do
the same with the positive to check the positive side(only if enough
clearance),also attempt to start the car with a boost or a good strong
battery charger hooked up to the chevelle. Is there any kind of a junction
block,on my 69 chevelle there is a plastic junction where the 10 gauge red
wire from the battery positive connects to,you can bypass that to see if
that helps, other responses have mentioned to check starter and battery, this
should also be checked completely as the other members have suggested, also 1
other thing, check the block whrere the starter mounts to make shure it is
clean and not rusty, body grounds etc.

A friend of mine just bought a 66 chevelle at an auction and was having
trouble starting it. When you turn the key the starter clicks a lot and the
engine very slowly cranks. The battery is fine, starter is new and tests
fine, and all the electrical in the engine compartment seems to be fine.
Supposedly the car was driven a bit five years ago and then parked in their
yard and never started again. They got it running once before the auction
but since then its done this. Anyone have any other ideas?

Sounds like the starter is faulty. Not uncommon to have a new one that won't

I've taken the battery out of the equation completely and still have the
issue. I took out the plugs and sprayed some WD-40 in each of the cylinders
and tried to start it to burn it off and it turned over really nice. Put
the plugs back in and now I have the same problem.

Clean & tighten all connections. Positive battery connections at battery
& solenoid, ground connections at battery, block, frame, and any other
ground connections a 66 may have. Clean means remove the connection, wire
brush both mating surfaces and reinstall. Might also try a different
battery even if the installed one checks fine.

Hello all,

It's time to get the key assembly out of the dash to restore it. Most
tumblers that I've taken out of GM cars takes a small wire inserted into the
hole, you turn past ACC, and the tumbler comes out. This doesn't seem to
work for the tumbler on my 68 El Camino. I tried the same thing going past
start, but no luck. When I insert the wire in the hole, it allows the lock
assembly to turn PAST ACC, but it doesn't seem to want to come out. The key
just pops out of the assembly. What am I doing wrong?

When I bought my 72 Chevelle, it was supposed to have a 12 bolt posi.
Well..it had a ten bolt non-posi! I thought..no problem, there should be
plenty laying around, and we have so many junk yards in the Houston area.
Well, after much searching online, not to mention a gazillion phone calls, I
found one on a 71 Chevelle that was hit in the front. They took it out.It
was a 12 bolt and cost me $500. I was so happy my search was over. I got it
to the shop the next day and we took the cover off, it was total CRAP
inside. The case was good, that 's all. Well a call to Summit, and a new
Eaton posi, Richmond 3:73 gears, Superior axles, a new aluminum cover,
bearing and extras, plus I got the housing Powder coated! Life was good, but
by the time I added all the money spent. I would have been fairly close to
buying one from Currie, Moser or Strange!

Then the following year and an incentive check, I came up the bright idea to
add Global West CAT 5 Suspension with Wilwood 4 piston calipers and zinc
washed rotors, so.I ended having the ends chopped off, new ends welded on
and bearings to eliminate the C clip. Oh don't let me forget, the new Moser
Axles.plus the rear had to be sand blasted and re-powder coated
again...Yep..I could had a nice Moser unit like Clint, with a hell of lot
less headaches. Poor planning on my part!

Learn from my mistakes! I also run a bored out 454 with an 8-71 blower. It
has a nice heavy lope and does turn heads when I go to Houston.

I'm going to build a friend's 65 Chevelle 300 into a nice g-machine. His
Torq Thrust II's won't fit in the rear and it's because he's running a later
model 12 bolt. When I told him what a 65 twelve bolt was worth,he about fell
over. Needless to say,I'm going to have his rear narrowed and add some good
axles. The car has a healthy 496" BBC and the rear needs all the strength it
can get.

If all the parts have matching date codes,$10K probably isn't outta line.
One thing to check is the engine block. If it's out of a truck instead of a

The bottom line is a good ABC extingusher is better than nothing at all.

And, for 10 bucks, a no brainer!! Like I've said in the past; better to have
and not need it.

Yes, I checked there yesterday too. The problem you may run into in your area
is someone to refill them. I would check for availability first and cost to
refill. I know I'm not going to use mine unless it's one of my classics
that's on fire. I move the extingusher to whatever car I'm driving or working
on. Everyone else I might help gets an ABC dousing. gm66

Just an FYI for the group... I searched and found several Halon

My local fire and safety place was selling Halon extinguishers as late as

Re: [Chevelle-list] Oil shelf Life

2006-04-14 Thread gm66
No,it isn't wine but it is the life blood of an internal combustion engine. I
would rather change the oil at the interval that most fleet mangers recommend
than buy a new engine. Oil doesn't disipate but it does get contaminated with
dirt,water and gasoline etc. gm66

You worry about stuff too much,Dan. Motor oil isn't like fine wine.
FWIW,oil is tested. Look on the label and it will tell you the spec.
However, the small synthetic companies often don't submit theirs for testing
because of the high cost of doing so.
Oil in a sealed container will probably outlive you.
