I don't think anybody makes them, but then again anything can be made if you
have enough money to throw into it.

I need help. I am looking for 1965 El Camino left and right quarter  panels.
I believe 1964 are the same. Skins will work as long as they  are full size.
Fingers are crossed that someone will have the answer.

[Chevelle-list] 1965 Malibu RHD (Wheel Covers)

2008-09-20 Thread Johann Grobler
Firstly; My apologies to all for hi-jacking the thread. I tried to illustrate
the complexities of the available options. The options are so many that you
could order a Malibu with your options and have a car that is absolutely unique.

Secondly to Josh's question, It has the fibreglass dash and to remove the
instruments, the whole dash is removed. Fairly simple bolt off/on.

Yes it has the RHD conversion. It is on the website
http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/showgallery.php/cat/500/ppuser/39452

My only problem is to find the right Wheel Covers locally as the cost of the
covers plus the freight cost plus the import tax makes it impossible for me to
import them. The Cost is about Rand 6400 = $800 which is more than double what
I paid for for the mag wheels now on and equal to a month's salary!. So if
anyone can come up with a solution, it would be appreciated.

  Hullo Dale,
The section that you refer to is extremely helpful as it acts as a
guide to what options you would want to add to your restoration project. I am
busy with a 65 Malibu that was CKD'd to GM South Africa from Canada 1965 and
has many unique features!
1.. Fibreglass dash
2.. No removable Instrument cluster
3.. Flat face plate
4.. Power Windows
5.. No Heater
6.. No power steering
7.. No nothing
8.. Absolute basic!

Chevrolet did not retain any statistical records on option
combinations. It is impossible to know with certainty the exact production

report individual regular production option items and the series/model it could

2008-09-20 Thread dansolomon
I just sold a bunch of wheel covers on ebay (none were for a 65). Four went to
Austria, three to Australia and one to Peru. None of the shipments cost over
$50 USD. Set up an automatic search that notifies you by email when covers are
listed and check with the seller before hand as to the cost to ship. If he is
fair, you should be able to get comparable rates to SA.

I did post that awhile back. The only difference is the distance between the
last two body mount positions in the rear. 3.25 inches. By shortening the
frame rails 3.25 inches the elky chassis will bolt up to the Chevelle body.

looked for a convertible frame for the last 5 years and either they were too
far away or too expensive. OK, I know we have been over this about 37 dozen
times. I cannot seem to find my information to fit a El Camino frame under my 2
door hardtop. I wrote @ one time that the number was 3.17 inches, but I have
seen anywhere from 2 to four inches. I have looked everywhere online and my
last resort is to go through all my assembly books. I am not sure if I have the
El Camino Length.

What I need to know is:

1) The difference in length between the hardtop and El Camino ?

2) Where on the frame to take the length out of ?

3) If you have an answer where did you get it?

4) Galvanize Vs POR 15 vs Powder coat ?

5) Paint my new FAB 9 housing with Hammertite vs POR 15 vs Powder coat ?

6) Frame and housing colors ?

7) Standard Detroit Locker Vs ARB air locker ?

 1. My way was not to cut both outside and inside U sections in a straight cut,
but a staggered cut.
( also mad a welding Jig that bolted to the rear and the first side body
mount bracket B-4 Finial welding.)
With the two inserted U's No gusset is needed.
2.The weld along the outer edge to the inner channel can be welded to
represent factory welds. The Butt welds are solid and can be ground finished
off to achieve a none visible Joint. There is on factory stamped hole that was
at my joint area, I just used a reamer to make it round again.

3. If memory serves me. the mounting is different compared to a CAR, But the
rear tail cross bar channel has the correct stamping for car strap location.

I would probably use some angle iron inside the frame for strength or you could
just box it. The El Camino fuel tank mounts way different. It has side to side
mounts(bars) under it with straps over the top. Bolts to the underside of the
chassis.

 Larry,

If I were to cut and weld a frame like that, I would use a full-penetration,
butt weld. That would allow you to get maximum strength out of the weld, plus
grind it smooth so it's not visible.

Good luck and if you have any questions, just ask.

Larry, I just happen to have a 65 El Camino chassis sitting beside a 65
Malibu chassis. I'll take a few measurements and get back to you later
today.

Well I finally broke down and bought a 65 El Camino frame for my project. I
looked for a convertible frame for the last 5 years and either they were too
far away or too expensive. OK, I know we have been over this about 37 dozen
times. I cannot seem to find my information to fit a El Camino frame under
my 2 door hardtop. I wrote @ one time that the number was 3.17 inches, but I
have seen anywhere from 2 to four inches. I have looked everywhere online
and my last resort is to go through all my assembly books. I am not sure if
I have the El Camino Length.

   Thanks

Thanks for all the input. Sorry it took so long to get back to everyone. I
had a little fender bender @ work last week and when woke up Saturday I could
hardly move. Then the water heater went out @ my house Sunday. So I spent
Monday Tuesday trying to recouperate.

I picked up the frame and stopped @ the carwash. After 20 dollars in
quarters it looks like I scored real well.Next I will be measuring and cutting
the
frame. I guess my next questions are:
1) After welding the frame does it need a gusset on the inside?
2) Would you grind and fill the welds until you cannot see were it was
sectioned ?
3) I haven't looked yet but does the El Camino gas tank straps bolt up the
same as the coupe?

I agree, go powder coat. I just had mine done in gloss black and it came
out great. I also had the front end parts done, pretty much anything without
rubber that would burn off in the oven. Just remember to clean any threaded

Re: [Chevelle-list] 1965 Frame Rearend

2008-04-11 Thread Mike Holleman
OK Larry, The difference is all after the next to last body mount locations.
Everything to there measures the same. The Elky chassis has 29.25 inches center
to center between the back two mount locations. The Malibu is 26.0 inches. This
shows a 3.25 inch difference in length. The cut would be between these two
mount locations in the rear side rails of the frame. This measurement would
obviously vary slightly from frame to frame. All side to side mount
measurements were the same on both. Hope this helps and if you need more I have
the chassis here and can take pics or get more info if needed.

On your colors if you have a place that you can have it done.powdercoat
all the way!! For your frame I have always been a fan of gloss black just for
the fact it is easier to clean up (slick surface) and the same goes for the
housing. Just my 2 cents, the beauty part of all this is choose the colors and
type that suits you. Its almost like its your car or something :) Anyway good
luck and let us know how the swap goes.

Re: [Chevelle-list] 1965 Hood Alignment

2007-03-24 Thread Mike Holleman
Dennis, There is nothing simple in hood adjustment. Are the hinges in good
shape? Without major wear? Once you know you are not fighting loose hinges it
is a matter of up and down adjustment of the hinge mounting bolts. The rear
bolts have a small amount of movement, the front have more. Problem is the
effect of a slight change can be big. Mark your hinge bolt postion before you
start so you can see where you started. Make little adjustments. Good luck.

Dennis- My 64 had similar problems as well. I adjusted the hood as far as
it would go within the factory holes on the fender side of the hinges, but
it just wasn’t enough. I assume that’s because it wasn’t anything special
to anyone until I got it in 1990. I know it’s been wrecked a couple of
times, and has front fenders and hood all off of different cars. I ended up
opening up the lower holes just a touch to make everything line up properly.

Dennis, There is nothing simple in hood adjustment. Are the hinges in good
shape? Without major wear? Once you know you are not fighting loose hinges it
is a matter of up and down adjustment of the hinge mounting bolts. The rear
bolts have a small amount of movement, the front have more. Problem is the
effect of a slight change can be big. Mark your hinge bolt postion before you
start so you can see where you started. Make little adjustments. Good luck.

Hi Guys,

When trying to adjust my hood so the back edge aligns with the cowl, I
grabbed my GM Body Service Manual and GM Assembly Manual to check out how the
factory tells us to do it. At present the hood is about 1/4 higher. But...
they do not address the issue at all. Am I missing a chapter? Is there a
simple procedure?

Dennis- My 64 had similar problems as well. I adjusted the hood as far as
it would go within the factory holes on the fender side of the hinges, but it
just wasn’t enough. I assume that’s because it wasn’t anything special to
anyone until I got it in 1990. I know it’s been wrecked a couple of times, and
has front fenders and hood all off of different cars. I ended up opening up
the lower holes just a touch to make everything line up properly.

Re: [Chevelle-list] 1965 Trunk Spring Install

2007-02-16 Thread Dennis McGillis
TJ, my trunk spring is in.

The trick seemed to be in finding a way to keep the wheel from falling off.
After two days of looking at it the thought occurred to me that a C-clamp might
work, and it did. A 2 clamp from Ace Hardware did the trick in two minutes.
Your J-21412 tool was absolutely essential. I cannot imagine any way to get
this puppy in without the proper tool. The fact that it works on your 68-72
indicates it works on 1964 to 1972 and others may be beseeching you to borrow
it. It will be in the mail back to you on Monday

Many thanks, I owe you. Be sure to see me when in Southern California

I can only think of one word - finesse. I remember that I had to use some
finesse to get it in right. I remember that the front of the spring was behind
the tab on the upper half of the trunk mount (that thing that is about ½
square that sticks out to hold the spring in place). I had to gently slide the
spring up, keeping it on the tab, while I slipped the other end in the slot.
If that makes sense - I would probably have to draw a picture and then say
enter tab A into slot B to get it more clear.

Does that make sense? Not sure if it will work - I just remember needing a
little finesse. I am sure the A body guys on the assembly line did not use
too much finesse, and it worked for them.

  Hi TJ,

Did you find some trick to get the springs in? Every time I get close to
getting it in, the wheel falls off the other end. Taping it on doesn't seem to
help.

Now my wife wants me to take it to a shop. Grrr. This is frustrating.

Available? Yes in the aftermarket, no from Chevrolet. Tire sizes for 1965
Chevelles included 6.95x14, 7.35x14 and 7.75x14. The full size car had 15-inch
wheels (15x5 or 15x5.5 for police cars) in 65 according to my parts book. There
was also a 3-bar spinner wheel cover available on the full size SS.

The best way to remove old heater hose, in my opinion, is to (1)
loosen/remove clamp then (2) with a box cutter type knife, slit the hose
lengthwise while it's on the heater core bung. Slitting the hose also makes it
easier to remove from the fittings on the intake and/or water pump as well.

Their web site says ships in 1 to 3 days, which means they have to

1. A 350 is going into my 1965 SS. Instead of headers I may run stock

better than my 283 manifolds. Is this true?

2. Does anyone in Southern California have a pair of'64 to

Are you looking for the higher performance "Rams Horn"
manifolds, or just stock "logs"? If you want a stock log, then you should
be able to get these from any dismantler for pretty cheap. If you want the
Rams Horn manifolds, they will likely be close to the price (or more) than
headers! I'll check my garage for my old iron log style
manifolds.

Skins typically go from the bottom up to the belt line (the top most line
before folding back toward the trunk), unless they are partial skins. They
usually include the doorjamb, but not always.

Full quarters typically include the full doorjamb and part of the sail
panel, as well as going all the way to the trunk opening. They are more true
to what was installed at the factory.

Skins cause you to create a weld where there wasn't one originally, except
in the case of the El Camino, which has no trunk opening.

As Trevor mentioned, the fenders are not being made yet for that year.

Well not all of us feel that way. I am not sure that a Corvair was the right

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
I had a 65 Corvair Monza convertible, 4 1 barrel carbs a 4 speed many
years ago. It was a pretty neat unique car.

To each his own. I don't love them, but they are far better than
virtually any car designed by GM in the 70's (so the '69 - '72 Chevelle is
OK!) to me. They can be made to handle quite well, and they are light.
Have you ever seen a 383 powered Corvair? What a screamer, and very cool.

I'm getting ready to take the one off of my 64 and
put on a cowl scoop. I don't know if they are the same as a 65 but will let this
one go for a fair price. Vernon
