Re: [Chevelle-list] Front suspension options

2006-10-13 Thread Clint Hooper
Mike, have you bought any front end parts for your 67 yet? If not,are you
planning a spindle change? The only tall spindle I would consider would be
the forged alum AFX units from ATS. These are the cat's meow but are very
pricey at around $800 w/steering arms and they also require C5/C6 Corvette
brakes with the attendant 17" or larger diameter wheels to clear them. The
route I'm going on my car is the Stage II kit from SC&C.
http://www.scandc.com/suspensions.htm Running my stock A-body spindles with
SC&C's upper control arms and their Howe taller upper & lower ball joints
will be about 99% as good as the AFX spindle set-up and still allow me to
keep my Baer C4 brakes. This kit costs $719 but since I sold my Global West
upper a-arms for $450,I only had to come up with another $269. What I really
like about either set-up is the huge reduction in bumpsteer these cars have
and the big improvement in negative camber and better roll center. B-body
spindles offer none of these benefits and most knowledgeable chassis experts
no longer recommend them. For those of you running them and the required
custom upper a-arms,the new AFX spindles work very well with the latter
arms.
Another option is the suspension set-up being utilized by Keith Anderson on
his killer 70 SS Elky. Maybe he will post his opinions.

Absolutely.    You can borrow a compressor from an
auto store, the compressed springs have too much stored energy to do
without.    It can be done without but its much more
  dangerous.

There are several web sites available with complete details
& pictures.  A few are listed in the WORKSHOP section at http://links.chevelles.net/links   .

If you haven't bought the replacement parts yet,  I'd highly
recommend MOOG, TRW or DANA parts.    The first time I did
mine, I used kit parts that were "no name" I had to do it again 30-40K
later.   I believe that some of the kits include the good
stuff.  I bought all MOOG replacement items (ball joints, tie rods ) at
Oreillys.  They were in stock & reasonably priced.

  Good luck

Yes, Larry. Be super careful. Compress it down "some"!
to the point where it's loose. Loosen the Castle nut
on the upper Ball Joint. Bang on the spindle and it
will fall off the taper. Finish the loosening and
remove the spring. Immediately un-tension the spring.
Don't leave it in the spring compresser. It's a killer
with that much pressure.

RJ,

I have some info on 69 springs but it’s
not as detailed as the 67 stuff.  Two charts at http://www.chevellestuff.com/69velle/front_springs.htm
show the (1) “Assembly Code” number and specs and (2) spring used
by sprung weight – sadly, not very informative for us laymen.  A big
block will add about 200 lbs over the 350 with all else being equal.

Yes and no, depends on the year and
options involved.  For example, 1967 shows 25 different front springs for
Chevelles, 5 of those for 138xx (SS) cars; one each for hardtop and convertible,
different spring (but same for both) if either have A/C, and a different spring
yet for both if F40 equipped.  Many are listed for small block cars with
same options.   A standard 13817 (67 SS hardtop) spring coded
“AA” is also listed for 15 other non-SS Chevelles depending on
series/model/suspension/and options.

Granted most aftermarket companies like
Moog, TRW, etc. pare these down to just a few sets.  What year are you
working on and what equipment (e.g., AC or not) will it have when done?

My experience has been that the only physical difference is that some come with oval
bushings and some with round bushings on the lowers. Not sure exactly why, could have
been big vs. small block. I've interchanged parts for those years without problems.

My 2 cents.

I think the guy in Sweden can use the A-arms, steering box(but maybe not Pitman arm),
sway bar, and tierods.
I thnk the other bits become 64-67 vs 68-72.

Hi André,

65 and 68 don't interchange. According to Global West 64-67 interchange and

That's not entirely accurate. When I did the 12" rotor swap, the donor car
I used was an '87 Pontiac station wagon and the rotors had a 5" bolt
spacing. The only place I was able to find that would redrill the rotors
was a German car repair shop. Imagine that!

If you go with the swap to tall spindles it does widen your front stance. I
belive it does so by like 3/8" on both sides but dont hold me to that number

The 12" tall spindle setup will not necessarily stop you any better than
the four piston disc brake setup. Are you having troubles with the 4
piston calipers (sucking air, leaking calipers, too expensive to
maintain), or do you want improved handling? If not, then stick with
your stock four piston setup. This setup is "rare" and better to leave
with a car if you are interested in collector value. But if this does
not concern you, I bet you could sell the setup and pay for the swap.

> What parts to take, rotors and spindles or would I need

You can find lots of info here:
http://www.globalwest.net/1964-72%20disc_brake_conversion_informatio.htm
https://www.hotchkis.net/frames/instructions.htm
http://www.hotrod.com/ (Car Tech -> Tech Articles -> Suspension
Upgrades)

You do not "need" the upper control arms, but you can't get a decent
alignment without them. If you like going through tires, no problem. I
swapped to the replacement upper A-Arms after going through the first
set of $250/ea tires in the front from uneven wear.

> would I need to redrill the rotors to 4,75"

I think the two cannot be used together. If you go to the taller
spindles, you will be using the floating single piston caliper, and not
your four piston setup. Either way, you should not need to redrill
anything, as the rotors all use the same bolt spacing.

> I heard that this will lower the car 1", but will front track

I'm not sure if there is a difference in width. I would expect it would
be very close to the same, but it could be off by a little.

The car handles much better - flatter thru a high speed curve.

> which are the cars I could take them from ?
78-92 Big Car (caprice, impala, other similar GM - ) 12" is most
often found on station wagons .

You can get much of the same benefit with a Tall spindle swap (same
work/idea) from 70-82 camaro or 73-77 chevelle. But these use 11" rotor.
These parts will be easier to find.

> What parts to take, rotors and spindles or would I need control arms
> as > well ??
You will not need control arms. Take rotors only if they are in good
shape.

> would I need to redrill the rotors to 4,75"
You could use the 12" rotors from a station wagon, but they will have a
5inch bolt pattern - chevelle is 4 3/4. I guess that they could be
redrilled. 1LE 12" rotors from a 90-92 IROC Camaro has 4 3/4 bolt
pattern, but uses metric wheel studs, so the studs need to be changed if
you want to use the same lug nuts on front and back.

> will my 1968 4 piston calipers fit on the spindle or would I need to

After I bought replacement calipers, I found that the stock calipers from
my 72 will fit on the late model spindle - yours probably will also.
Apparently the basic caliper didn't change much over the years - just the
location of the flexible brake line connection.

On my 72, the wheels were wider by 3/8 inch on each side.

We have 80 degrees here in Italy today, and guess what that mean ??
BBQ and cold beer after work !!!

I could need some info on 12" disc brakes and tall spindles.
How much better is this setup than the standard parts
which are the cars I could take them from ?
What parts to take, rotors and spindles or would I need control arms as
well ??
would I need to redrill the rotors to 4,75"
will my 1968 4 piston calipers fit on the spindle or would I need to

I heard that this will lower the car 1", but will front track be wider

Isn't it awesome?  I couldn't believe how much better my car handled after rebuilding the front end.  The only thing better than that was when I switched to 12" front discs :) (Couldn't afford to do both at the same time)

Just to keep the list on topic I'd like to announce that I've finished my biggest project yet.  The suspension on my '69 El Camino now has new bushings, ball joints, tie rods, springs, and shocks, both front and rear.

It drives like a dream.  Now I just need to replace the body bushings and it will be solid!

I should have some project photos up on my site very soon.

I had my site on xoom.com which switched to
nbci.com which closed the free web server... so I just haven't got off my
butt to put my pics up anywhere :)   Maybe I'll just make a directory
of my sister's website... I'll let you know if I put them up.

Oh wait, you know what, I did an abreviated version
of my site at school as a project once a year or so ago... looks like it's still
there.  The links might not all work, I haven't touched it since that
class.. but you can see some pics   http://gecko.gc.maricopa.edu/~rrstalna/
