Re: [Chevelle-list] Fuse Block

2010-11-03 Thread Jim Thompson
The fuse has nothing to do with the brakes. Check the brake light switch on
the pedal bracket. The wires going to the switch maybe rubbing and grounding
out.

You could bypass the block and use an inline fuse. The short could be at one
of the bulb sockets. Try tracing the short with a probe test light.

I think the fuse block on my '67 is going bad.

I blow fuses randomly for the brakes, and even when I replace the fuse the
brakes sometimes don't work. Then they do. Either way, the turn signals
always work. This implies the wiring after the fuse block has to be pretty
good and it is either the fuse block or the dash wiring.

The reason I suspect the fuse block over the dash wiring is that I can play
with the fuse and the brake lights will start to work or stop.

Assuming it is the fuse block, am I better off replacing it with a stock
fuse block, or an aftermarket one with modern fuses?

Re: [Chevelle-list] Exhaust.... Block ID

2010-10-26 Thread Dan Solomon
The block is a 454 used from 72-75 in the Chevelle, up to 76 in passenger cars
thru 76 and trucks until 79. Also used in the vette in 72.

The 3919840 was on the 396 from 67-69 and on the 427 from 67-70. It is a closed
chamber 106.8 cc head.

The 3873858 was used from 66-67 on the 396 and 66-68 on the 427. It is also
closed chamber but with a larger 108.9 cc chamber.

If you have a question for the list, you should start a new thread to eliminate
confusion.

Never had a problem in over thirty years, using Loctite vs. steel and anti
seize. In my early days I spent a lot of time on rusted and rounded exhaust
bolts. I do suggest anti-seize on the studs when replacing. Hand tighten is
sufficient. Tighten on three or four even passes.

Retorqueing after thermal cycling is a good idea but not brass nuts, they are
too soft and may strip out.

The only reason a carbon gasket will fail is if air/exhaust is able to pass by
it causing  it to oxidize. I would take a real close look at your flanges. Are
they lining up properly? Is there any nicks or any other imperfections in the
mating surfaces that  may cause mis-alinement's? You would be looking for any
cuts or burrs that would damage the integrity of your sealing media.

Tighten your bolts in sequence, assuring that you have a even compression of
the gasket. Torque in increments 1/3 of the end result you wish to achieve and
then once around to check. Whenever you touch one bolt, it changes to values of
the other two.

Hope this helps.

I never had a gasket fall apart. I suggest new studs, use brass nuts, and
locktite. Retighten nuts after an initial warm up period and then again a month
later.

I am having a tough time keeping the donut gasket between the manifold and the
exhaust pipe from disintegrating. After installation, it takes about 3-4 months
of very little driving and they start leaking again.

I have been told that there are metal gaskets (poss copper?) and regular donut
gaskets with a metal tube insert that helps the heat/exhaust flow through with
less stress to the donut.

I have not seen anything like what I am describing and wondered if there was
someone out there that had some experience with this problem that they could
share.

I just used Goodmark full quarters on a 1971 Cutlass Supreme convertible (I
know but still an A-Body) and they fit fairly well. Had to do some
massaging where the quarter met the trunk.
Price does mean a lot. If you shop around you can probably save a couple
hundred dollars.

I have not seen anything like what I am describing and wondered if there was
someone out there that had some experience with this problem that they could
share.

Thanks,

The junk mail keeps getting through because the email is coming to you from the
Chevelle list, so the only way to block it would be to block
chevelle-l...@chevelle.net email address. At this point its up the
administrator of the list to block/remove him.

You might be able to create a Rule with your email software that looks at all
email coming in and if the message contains Lee Hester it will just auto
delete. Depends on what options your email program gives you.

Maybe the list admin might do something if we all start threatening to drop off
the list if he/she doesn't do something.

I have been told that there are metal gaskets (poss copper?) and regular donut
gaskets with a metal tube insert that helps the heat/exhaust flow through with
less stress to the donut.

I forgot to add, lubricate your new bolts. You can achieve a greater bolt load
with the same torque value. Do not use Loctite.

Never had a problem in over thirty years, using Loctite vs. steel and anti
seize. In my early days I spent a lot of time on rusted and rounded exhaust
bolts. I do suggest anti-seize on the studs when replacing. Hand tighten is
sufficient. Tighten on three or four even passes.

edge going down the top. It doesn't matter that much if you are replacing both
sides, the 66-67 quarters are second to none, they were spot on.  I have used a

Harlan:

I had a 56 Chevy sedan delivery with a factory 265. It too had no filter.
Unfortunately this was when I was 16 years old and didn't know boo about ID
numbers etc.I do know it was the original motor I'm guessing mine must of been
an early 1956 production  and they used the non filtered blocks until they
either got all used up or they used them in the cheaper cars?

Maybe yours is a replacement block? I do not believe that it was possible to
add a filter to the area in question.I can tell you when I went to change the
oil I searched all over for an oil filter.Mine didnt have one but the add on
filter was on top of the manifold . it was helf in place under the thermostat
housing and the metal lines screwed into the front of the block near the top.
The motor is probably worth something to someone restoring a certain year car
.Send me a picture of the numbers too and I will do some research.

Interesting  but I can remember several low budget 57 with 265s also. I had
tons of Tri 5 cars when I was a kid . Also saw many 57 with 55-56 distributors
which did not have the window to adjust the points. I think they used parts
until they ran out.

Brad may be on to it.  The 55 56 Chevy 265 and the 57 283 used the single
letter F in the suffix code.  The same Corvette used FG for the
Powerglide.  The oil fill tube you mention was used up through 1968 so
that's not an issue.  The 55 did not have an integral oil filter, i.e., no
canister on the driver side rear of the block.  There was an optional oil
filter system but it was an add-on the sat on top of the engine.

Looking into more resources the early engine codes were as yours appears.

0552582 is the sequence number of the engine (although my source says this
should only be 6 digits
F is for Flint engine plant
56 is the model year
F is the engine code and in 1956 it's a 170hp Powerglide passenger.  Again,
Corvette used a 2-letter code and did not use a 2-bbl intake.

I'd really be interested in seeing a readable photo of it.

1957 did indeed still use a 265 engine but these were coded C, CD and CE.
Optional external oil filters were offered in 1955 since there was not an
integral oil filter with the engine. See
http://stovebolt.com/techtips/engines/oil%20filters/index.html about half way
down the page under 1955-1958.

I attached copies of pages from an old parts manual, there is an example of

They are located in NC and for me parts arrive in one day. Also my experience

You are correct. In 69 the prop valve was up next to the master. The block on
the frame is simply a distribution block. In 71 they did away with the prop
valve up by the master and incorporated it into the distribution block down on
the frame.

The proportioning valve balances the front to rear brakes. Under hard to
moderate braking the car will nose dive or the rear brakes will lock if the
valve is incorrect. If you feel even braking front to rear, your are fine.

Some times the whole gauge cluster needs to be grounded. Simply connect a
wire from a screw in the cluster to a solid place on the dash or firewall.

Also check the ground on the sending unit at the tank.

Harlan,

You must have lost a ground while under the dash. Find it and you should solve
the gas gauge problem.
As for the brakes, where the booster and master cylinder both off the grand
prix? On the booster there is a shaft. They can be short or long. They don't
mix and match. A long shaft in a shallow master cylinder can be an issue.
Also when switching from manual to power, you need to move the pin in the brake
pedal to the other hole. If I remember correctly, move to the top hole, but
either way, the OTHER hole.

i used the booster, spindles, porportioning valve from the gran prix, and
got the discs, calipers, hoses, brgs, master from NAPA for a 69 gran prix with
front discs.
i did notice that the original master was somwhat more rounded looking than
the one i got from NAPA which is more rectangular and when we measured the
outside length of the original and NAPA master the original one out of the
gran prix is longer than the one we put in, this was just measuring the
outside of the case-- if this matters ??

It sounds to me like the master you got from NAPA is master for a 70-72. The
original master you got from the GP sounds like a 69 master. Can't remember
which one uses the short push rod and which one the long rod (between the
booster and the master) but these two masters use different sized rods. Your
problem would indicate you have the short rod in and need the long one.

other hole, but i could not get it to move into the other hole because it was
hitting on things, i put the whole booster/rod ass'y from the gran prix into
the car.
i used the booster, spindles, porportioning valve from the gran prix, and got
the discs, calipers, hoses, brgs, master from NAPA for a 69 gran prix with front
discs.
i did notice that the original master was somwhat more rounded looking than
the one i got from NAPA which is more rectangular and when we measured the
outside length of the original and NAPA master the original one out of the gran
prix is longer than the one we put in, this was just measuring the outside of
the case-- if this matters ??

Did you change to a disc type master cylinder a disc type
proportioning/distribution valve?

  Harlan,

As for the brakes, where the booster and master cylinder both off the
grand prix? On the booster there is a shaft. They can be short or long. They
don't mix and match. A long shaft in a shallow master cylinder can be an issue.
Also when switching from manual to power, you need to move the pin in the
brake pedal to the other hole. If I remember correctly, move to the top hole,
but either way, the OTHER hole.

Check the ground to the dash for the gauge. Sounds like your booster has
failed, do you have a check valve in the booster? Run the car and pull the
valve out it should be under vacuum.

i put power discs in my 68 from a 1969 pontiac grand prix, and now i have to
use both feet to stop the car and the stopping distance is great, can anyone
help to what might be the problem? seems like they are working because the
rotors get warm after a drive.

and also the fuel gauge is pegged on full at all times

thanks!

Year One code HEAT3 expires 7/1/10 for 20%.
Year One code S6110 expires 7/13/10 for 15%, extra 5% off for over $500 and
another 5% for over $1,000.
OPG code 0710 expires 8/15/10.
I don't know that either one of them warehouse anything, it always seems to go
on B/O then you wait.
