Does anybody have any experience and advice about this test?

Re: subinterfaces

2000-09-02 Thread Tim O'Brien

RE: subinterfacesThe book that I am looking at states that the 1600 will run
12.0(3)T with 4 meg flash and 8 meg DRAM, but you will need to upgrade to 10
meg DRAM for the IP Plus software of the same version (12.0(3)T). It looks
like you can run any version of the software if you have software if you
have 6 meg Flash and 16 meg DRAM.

you can do nat with the ip only version of 12.x I assume that means you can
do it with any version. very handy and a good reason to upgrade all by
itself. if you don't have a service contract, 12.x ip only for a 1600
router should be around $20 but make sure you have adequate ram and flash
because it's probably bigger

Then I need to work with CISCO AV-pairs or can I configure the cisco to work

You have to partition the Flash to make it one big (virtual) flash.

IOS Firewall Feature set vs PIX

This is a bit confusing when it comes to Cisco security products.
What is the advantage of buying a PIX when I have a Cisco IOS with the

It looks like it is doing a lot of packet inspection too. Does IOS Firewall
feature set support stateful information? Please let me know any major
advantages of using PIX over IOS Firewall feature set.

BGP - some things learned

2000-09-02 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Another interesting weekend. I've begun in earnest my look into BGP. I am
reading the usual suspects - Halabi, Stewart, and RFC 1771.

Finally got a scenario set up with iBGP where all the routes are showing up
where they belong.

1) The command Show IP BGP is proving quite useful to know. This appears to
yield the contents of the BGP table, which may or may not have anything in
common with the routing table.
2) The process of injecting routes into BGP now makes sense to me. Halabi
actually explains it quite well on pages 134-135 ( 1st edition ) , and it
really is no different than with any other routing protocol in the world of
Cisco. But I guess I was more tired than I thought last night. It didn't
sink through the first time. Outsmarted myself again ;-
3) After a bit of fiddling with an inter-AS problem, I finally understood
something in the RFC that had me a bit confused. Section 5.1.3 ( Next_Hop )
talks about the next hop router being on a common subnet with the peer and
the advertiser. I was confused because a couple of days ago I had three
routers talking to eachother via eBGP 9 different AS on each router ) with
no problem. Last night I set up two AS's, one with three routers, one with
one router.

Router_1---router_2-router_3--router_4
OSPF---OSPF-OSPF
AS1-AS1AS4
IBGP--IBGP/EBGP---EBGP

The link between AS1 and AS4 refused to come out of the ACTIVE state. Turns
out that my use of the neighbor a.b.c.d update-source loopback 0 was the
problem. The loopback was not on the same subnet. I suppose that if I were
to use the EBGP Multihop command, this would... naw that's not it. Just
tested. Something else bad is happening. Or at least, ebgp-multihop does not
seem to solve the problem of stuck-in-active when using neighbor a.b.c.d
update-source loop 0 on both sides Eliminating the update-source does allow
the Established state to form. Now if I could only determine why AS4 is
seeing only BPG routes that originate on routers 3 and 2... :-

4) Even in this small lab, BGP appears to take an inordinate amount of time
to set up and stabilize after a Clear IP BGP * command. I can imagine what
it must take on a router that receives a full BGP table ( 90,000 routes
according to the last Tony Bates CIDR report )

5) There seems to be a bit more to learn.

Re:AS 5300 Voip config

2000-09-02 Thread chan

hi all

Actually what i wanted is to do a one stage dialing from Singapore to
Hong
 Kong with the As5300.
I would also attach a diagram for your info.

AS i got a AS 5300 in Singapore and Hong Kong.
In Singapore i got a E1 connected to the AS 5300. Normaly service provider
will configure the AS5300 for two stage dialing. First Dial into AS5300
by the E1 DID then receive IVR , then they will be prompt to enter pin
code
follow by destination phone number. Then the AS 5300 will establish a
connection to Hong Kong As 5300. Hong Kong AS 5300 will dial the
destination
throught the T1 that is connected to As 5300 to the PSTN to reach the
 destination.

Now i would like to do a one stage dialing to my hong kong destination
 number.
That mean when anyone dial my E1 number to access the AS5300, the As 5300
 will
able to do a direct connection to Hong Kong As 5300. Hong Kong As 5300
will
dial throught the T1 via PSTN to the destination . Like say my destination
number is 852 30027171. This destination number will be fixed. This number
will be my customer service number in Hong Kong. So i would like the
public
in Singapore would able to just dial my E1 via PSTN have a direct
connection
to mt cHong Kong customer service number (852 30027171)

I would like to know how can i config AS 5300 to do this. If AS 5300 can't
do it , i hope that there are other solution for it.

 Thank You
 with regards
 chiaoliang

RAM 16 Mb
Flash 16Mb
Router boots from Flash.

I would appreciate help.

Re: IOS Firewall Feature set vs PIX

2000-09-02 Thread Kevin Wigle

Oscar,

Generally, the PIX is a dedicated appliance that does one thing - firewall.
Therefore it is optimized to do that one job and do it well. Large
corporations/businesses could have hundreds (thousands) of users going
through the firewall to the internet - PIX (the right size of course) will
handle this type of traffic load without much effort.

The IOS Firewall Feature Set - which is now called "Cisco Secure Integrated
Software" (CSIS), is working along with the normal duties that the router is
doing. Therefore you may have to add more memory and things may slow down a
bit (or really slow down) the more users you have going through it.

However, CSIS also has some Integrated intrusion detection system (IDS)
capabilities built in - but again you're adding more overhead to the router.

So, size does matter. Small offices could probably use CSIS without much
problem. Larger organizations should look at the PIX.

For CSIS look at http://www.cisco.com/go/csis
For PIX look at http://www.cisco.com/go/pix

Subject: IOS Firewall Feature set vs PIX

This is a bit confusing when it comes to Cisco security products.
What is the advantage of buying a PIX when I have a Cisco IOS with the
 Firewall feature set?

It looks like it is doing a lot of packet inspection too. Does IOS
Firewall
feature set support stateful information? Please let me know any major
advantages of using PIX over IOS Firewall feature set.

 Thank you in advance.

Hi there,

I have just installed 2 X 8MB Flash modules in 2503 Router and when I do
"Show Version" it shows up as two seperate 8MB Flashes instead of 16MB.
E.g.

cisco 2500 (68030) processor (revision F) with 16384K/2048K bytes of
memory.
Processor board ID 04594752, with hardware revision
Bridging software.
X.25 software, Version 2.0, NET2, BFE and GOSIP compliant.
Basic Rate ISDN software, Version 1.0.
1 Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interface.
2 Serial network interfaces.
1 ISDN Basic Rate interface.
32K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
8192K bytes of processor board System flash partition 1 (Read/Write)
***???***
8192K bytes of processor board System flash partition 2 (Read/Write)
***???***

Configuration register is 0x2142

Does anyone know how to make it come up as 16MB?

Thanks for your help !!!

ISL/VLAN support is in IP Plus versions of IOS. There are versions of
IOS, and then there are feature sets. If you want IPX, you have to run an
IPX version of 12.0(3)T3..if you want appletalk, you have to run

the "IP Plus" feature set at a minimum. Its most likely supported in

Re: VPN Client through firewall

2000-09-02 Thread Rodgers Moore

Assuming you mean that the client is behind a firewall trying to connect to
a different firewall elsewhere...

First, you must configure static nat for the host running the client, so
that the client has it's own legal IP address for the Internet. IKE/ISAKMP
communicates from port 500 to port 500. PAT breaks this, so NAT is
required. You then need to pass PROTOCOLS 50 and 51, NOT port numbers.
ESP and AH are just like ICMP, they have there own protocol numbers.

That's it,

Golly, sorry to tell you this, but I think you are on the 'proverbial

A subnet mask determines the place where the bits on the left (the network

subnet mask of 0.255.255.0 you would basicly be saying that the network you

I can't say that I have tried this on a private or a public network, but I

This was a fascinating topic that was previously discussed back in July of 1999. I

want to search the archives for the thread "Theoretical question".

To summarize the jist of the discussion, RFC 1812, declares discontiguous subnet

Subject: BGP - some things learned

Chuck

RE: ISL on sub-if

2000-09-02 Thread Jared Carter

Actually I thought that was my mistake at first.
Unfortunately it was not. Issuing a ? at the sub-interface prompt does not
list "encapsulation" as a valid command.

I have 2 2924 and a 2620 I am trying to
practice routing between VLANs. The trunk between the switches is
okay. When I create the sub-if on the router and try to run encap isl

Starting BCMSN - suggestions?

2000-09-02 Thread Seth Wilson

Hey everyone,

Well, after a longer-than-intended respite after passing my CCNA, I plan on
going after the CCDA and starting on my CCNP tests. I'm working on the
BCMSN now. I have the Cisco Press book for the course, written by a woman
whose name escapes me at the moment. Just wondering if anyone can suggest
any resources for this test, or can extemporize on what to expect on the
exam. Many thanks in advance.

RE: Subnet Question

2000-09-02 Thread Cisco

Leigh Anne,

Shortly after I sent my e-mail, I found the email thread in my archive. I
also saved it because I found it to be facinating, I was quite shocked to
find it in a test exam for the CCNA in the form of a True/False. It appears
the answer may be true, but the "legal" answer is false. (Mental Note: What
is red may be black).

Someone tried it and they found it did not work on IOS (11.3 6T), or Linux.
Here is a copy of the original post, which was agreed to theoretically work,
but will not work due to RFC 1812's declariation of illegality.

Enjoy!

Start Post from July 8th, 1999

This is a purely theoretical question, and I see absolutely no practical
reason for wanting to do this (other than complete insanity), but I'm
curious...

Is it possible to use a subnet mask with discontiguous 1s? For example, a
subnet mask of 255.255.255.170 (expand it to binary - the last octet is
10101010)?

This could give you networks and hosts of (say)
   x.x.x.128 (network A)
  x.x.x.129 (host on A)
  x.x.x.130 (network B)
  x.x.x.131 (host on B)
  x.x.x.132 (host on A)
  x.x.x.133 (host on A)
  x.x.x.134 (host on B)

(my binary arithmetic may be wrong but hopefully you can see what I'm
getting at)
If this is possible, are there any situations where it might be applicable
(short of a really nasty CCIE lab, maybe :-)?

This was a fascinating topic that was previously discussed back
in July of 1999. I bookmarked it for reference, because I found
the debate so interesting. You might want to search the archives
 for the thread "Theoretical question".

To summarize the jist of the discussion, RFC 1812, declares
discontiguous subnet masks as illegal. You'll find the specifics
in Section 10.2.2, "Address and Prefix Initialization".

Golly, sorry to tell you this, but I think you are on the 'proverbial
crack'... I would answer B on any Cisco, MS, Nortel or any other
  test you
care to put in front of me...

A subnet mask determines the place where the bits on the left
  (the network
bits) are divided from the bits on the right (the host bits). If
  you had a
subnet mask of 0.255.255.0 you would basicly be saying that the
  network you
are on is the center 2 octets only, while the host bits are the
 first and
  last octet.

I can't say that I have tried this on a private or a public
  network, but I
cannot see this working. Either the equipment would keep you
  from setting
this up, or the network would just not work. One of the central
  assumptions
of TCP/IP is that the network MUST be on the right and the hosts
  MUST be on
  the left.

That said, if you ever try this PLEASE let me know how it goes!

  HTH,

  Casey

mms I wanted to add that there is also an errata to the figure 8-5
mms page 294 of

mms The 48-bit ethernet address should read:
mms
mms 0001 0101 1110 0 which converts to

mms 23 bit that can be matched to the Ip Multicast least-significant

Re: IOS upgrade

From which mode are you trying to upgrade the image ?
look at the output of the show version command and it
should state the flash status as Read/Write ,,, This means
that you have to be in the Boot Mode.

Subject: IOS upgrade

Hi,
I have a problem regarding IOS upgrade.
I am able to backup the existing image from the FLASH to the TFTP server.
However, when I try doing an IOS upgrade from the TFTP to the FLASH, I get
message saying, "%FLH: Flash download failed."
I have IOS 11.1(3) filename: flash:igs-j-l.111-3 and I am trying to upgrade
to IOS 12.0(12) filename: c2500-js56i-l.120-12.bin
I am upgrading the router from the AUI port connected via Ethernet 10BaseT
transceiver. I assigned 10.10.10.2 to my PC running TFTP with 10.10.10.1
as
default gateway. I assigned the 10.10.10.1 to the Ethernet Interface on
the Cisco 2513 router.
The specs for ROUTER are as follows
RAM 16 Mb
Flash 16Mb
Router boots from Flash.

I would appreciate help.

Thanks

SAUD
