Re: Token Ring Interface down/down
What kind of MAU? Usually you need a straight through cable. And, if its one of the old IBM MAUs, make sure you are not connecting to the far left or far right ports, they are for Ring In and Ring Out only, not station connections. Also, try a different port, sometimes the relays stick shut. ---JRE--- ""Hubert Pun"" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > According to the Token Ring section of the certificateZone.com, there is > no "no keepalive" equivalent. Re: BGP Local Pref and MED/Metric - Route Maps Inbound/Outbound
On Sat, 9 Dec 2000, Jennifer Mellone wrote: > BGP Local Pref is used to control outbound traffic. MED/Metric is used to > control inbound traffic. Why is it that you do an inbound route map (vs > outbound) when setting local pref and an outbound route map (vs. inbound) > when setting MED? It seems opposite. ok...here we go: to get OUT of a router you follow one of the routes in the routing table. These routes come IN to the router from say a peer or upstream. So you need to modify them as they come IN so that they are changed before they are added to the routing/bgp table. Inbound routes effect outbound traffic. for traffic to get IN to your router, its going to follow one of the routes that came OUT of your router. Your router announces its routes to its BGP peers. On their way out you can modify these routes, such as setting med etc. Outbound routes effect inbound traffic. For local pref: 1. route comes from our peer into your router 2. your router can set the local pref of this route coming into your router 3. your router adds this route to its bgp/routing tables now your router will use this route for outbound traffic. For MED: 1. a route is in your router 2. you announce this route to a BGP peer 3. on its way out to the peer, you can modify the metric (MED) 4. The route is added to the peers routing/bgp tables 5. the peer may use this route to get traffic into you Brian > > - Jennifer Mellone > > _ > FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html > Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] > --- Brian Feeny, CCNP+ATM, CCDP [EMAIL PROTECTED] Network Administrator ShreveNet Inc. Re: ccna test 507
Jennifer, I don't think you will have any problem. If you passed all four semester finals with a grade of 80% or better, you should breeze through the exam. I am surprised that you indicated that you didn't have any CAT1900 experience. It is one of the required items for Cisco Networking Academy Labs. We give our students several lab experiments on that piece of equipment, including downloading and installing a new IOS from a TFTP server. The Sybex CCNA book by Lammle is indeed an excellent study reference. We recommend it to all our students. Good luck on your exam. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Patrick, If what you are looking for is a switch that provides in-line power (i.e. for IP phones, wireless bridges, etc.) check out the Catalyst 3524XL-PWR. BGP Local Pref and MED/Metric - Route Maps Inbound/Outbound
BGP Local Pref is used to control outbound traffic. MED/Metric is used to control inbound traffic. Why is it that you do an inbound route map (vs outbound) when setting local pref and an outbound route map (vs. inbound) when setting MED? CCIE Lab Preparation - Part 2
I have put together a few thoughts about motivation and preparation. I am currently using this method for my CCIE Lab preparation. When they first turn on their computer, they aren't generally connected to the VPN, so they can't login normally at that point. Make sure they are still setup to logon to the domain, even if they can't. Have them enter the correct username and password at the login prompt, and just say "OK" when it complains that it can't find a domain controller. Keep hitting OK until it boots, without the domain controller. This will cache the correct username/password combination, so that when it does try and connect to an NT server, it will send the correct information. Also, as others have said, make sure you have WINS or an LMHOSTS file working to allow them to find the domain controller(s). Jennifer, I just took the 507 test and can address some of your concerns. --- scared to death is a little too far. You should be nervous because this is not a test intended to be easy. It is an adaptive test that will focus on your weak spots. I believe that although that is hard to swallow if you don't pass, that it is still 'right' considering the intent of the certification. Cisco obviously wants CCNAs to not have any weak spots. This keeps the value of the certification high. I obviously just experienced not passing. Re: how does traffic from CAT55 switch moule to Route switch module ( RSM)?
Correct me if I'm wrong but router on a stick means a router that is "physically" and "logically" separate from the switches. I don't think an RSM is considered as a router on a stick since information are passed via virtual interfaces. Re: How Big a router for Full BGP routes?
This is being discussed more and more often. The organization I work for is just about to do out part to make the Internet Routing Table 1 route larger. We have had a legacy Class C block for years, but never used it. Over the next couple weeks I'll be setting it up to advertise across a couple different ISPs. Like someone further down in the thread stated as well, I'm only planning to receive the routes that originate from the AS's that I peer with. For all other traffic, I'll just use a default route... - Original Message - From: "Chuck Larrieu" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Cisco Mail List" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, December 08, 2000 9:26 PM Subject: How Big a router for Full BGP routes? > According to this afternoon's Bates Report, there are over 95,000 routes > being advertised across the internet, at least from the vantage point of the > gentleman doing the reporting. > > I bring this up because a week ago, the reporter saw 93,000 routes. > > Historically, in September 1996 there were about 40,000 routes advertised. > In September 1998 that number was around 50,000. > > I gotta wonder how much of this increase is due to people multiple homing > with different ISP's so they can "load balance across the internet"? :-> > > In any case, for those who ask "how big a router do I need to handle the > full internet routing table?" the answer may well be "how many months do you > want to keep the same unit in service?" > > Can you imagine what this would be without CIDR? > > The Tony Bates website is at: > > http://www.employees.org/~tbates/cidr.plot.html > > > Chuck > -- > I am Locutus, a CCIE Lab Proctor. Re: Convergence question - BCSN
D will still send updates to router C but it would be with a metric of "unreachable" or 16 hops for RIP. C will look at this and will: a) If an update was received from B first, for a better route, it will put it in the database and drop the "unreachable" packet being sent to it. b) If an update was received from D, it will enter it into the route as unreachable, start the holddown timer but will eventually update its database when it receives an updated route from B. Since B's route will be better than "unreachable", the holddown timer will be ignored and the route reinstated. Hope this answers your question. As far as triggered update goes, on page 25, #1 of RIP Convergence, it says "Router D creates a new flash update and sends it to Router E"... that is upon receiving a flash update from C. Paru, What you might want to do is check out the other groupstudy list. The CCNA list has alot of people working on the CCNA test and I bet you would get alot better input on what worked good for the people studying for that test. You can also read entries from people working on the same stuff as you are working on. >>>Brian >From: "paaru216" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Reply-To: "paaru216" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >CC: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: Requirement for CCNA? >Date: Sat, 9 Dec 2000 08:47:31 -0500 > >Hello:=20 > Some one give me the solution. Re: Need help with a failing 7206
Joseph, This sounds like a good time configure the router to dump the core to a TFTP server before the next crash. Here is a link from Cisco's webpage and a little cut from the page: ### http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/68/15.html Creating a Core Dump Using TFTP If the core dump is 16M or less, you can use TFTP with the following global configuration command: exception dump Including this command in your configuration causes the router to attempt to make a core dump if it crashes. The core dump is written to a file named "hostname-core" on your TFTP server, where "hostname" is the name of the router. You can change the name of this core dump file using the exception core-file command. The name you choose using this command must already exist in the /TFTPBOOT directory of the Remote Server. The core dump file will be the size of the memory available on the processor. Here is an example going to the server at IP address 161.171.10.3: exception dump 161.171.10.3 Note: For core dumps greater tham 16M, you must use either RCP or FTP. TFTP won't work. # Don't ask me how to figure out if your core dump will be over 16M. Trial and error would be my process. Then what you would want to do is work with Cisco and have them analyze the output, unless you are proficient in this. As Leon mentioned you could do the show stacks command after a crash and copy the stack trace into the stack decoder on Cisco's website it is also important to note what it says on the show stacks command for why the crash occured for instance: System was restarted by error - a Software forced crash The time I sent off a stack trace my reply from Cisco didn't have any usefull information, I talked to a friend of mine and he said it hasn't ever replied with helpfull info, but I'd try that first. I can't find the link now for the stack decoder, but I know it is on the CCO TAC page, and if you go into the groupstudy history and find Andrews reply to my question subject "RE: stacks decoder" the link is there. The more specific logging sounds like a good idea, too. I'm trapped at work on a Saturday, so I look forward to your future postings. Good luck! >>>Brian >From: "leonz" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Reply-To: "leonz" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: Re: Need help with a failing 7206 >Date: Sun, 10 Dec 2000 00:16:59 +1300 > >You may consider log messages to syslog server and increase the level of >logging details at least it'll show you something... also try things >like >show stack, see if you can find anything. > >Leon Chang > > >- Original Message - >From: "Joseph Ezerski" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Sent: Saturday, December 09, 2000 12:00 PM >Subject: Need help with a failing 7206 > > > > I have a Cisco 7206 with an IMA card and two ATM T-1 circuits going into >the > > 4 port IMA card. Re: ccna test 507
Jennifer The Cisco Academy curriculum stays true to the certification, but you are right about needing more information. Switching and Frame Relay are weaknesses in the curriculum. Diagnostics of STP and setting up a router as a TFTP server are two that come to mind. You should have TCP/IP and subnetting down solid as well as Novell and IPX. I also had a couple of questions on PPP. Half of the test is just like a review of the foundation exam, the other half is just like common-sense networking terminology or technology testing rather than a test on design technique. Most questions are very superficial in nature. And it seems that there are many questions that is not useful for testing purpose. You can find the correct answer (even you don't know) easily by eliminating those answers which are obviously wrong. Re: CIPT 2.0 - flapping CAT 6608
I've found a work arround. 1) Must use 5.5.1 or later firmware. On earlier versions when the E1 port flaps it takes out the entire CAT6K 2) Disabling any unused E1 ports does not fix the problem but helps increase the interval between flaps. 3) All E1 ports MUST be registered with a Call Manager. Although the CAT itself is configured from CLI it takes some of its information from CCM via DHCP and TFTP. If it is not registered it does not get the correct LOAD file from CCM. This is similar to the problem with an old VIP30 phone continually trying to reboot when there is no valid load for it. Hope that helps anyone else setting up the CAT for CIPT. peter whittle wrote: > Hi, > > I am working towards CIPT 2.0 (Cisco Call Manager v3.0) exam. > > I have a CAT 6K in the core with 6608 (8 port E1 blade) as per the CIPT > LABs. > > The problem is that the 6608 resets itself after about 40 S, making it > very difficult to complete a call over the E1 link. > > It seems to help if I disable the unused (un-terminated) E1 ports. > > However, the 6608 still resets itself all be it not quite so frequently. > > I have tried a 2nd SUP 1A 2GE card, a different PSU and a different 6608 > > blade - all without success! > > Any ideas? > > Thanks > > Peter > > _ > FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html > Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Incredible Lab !!!!!
If anybody in Auckland , New Zealand buys it , I'll supply the roadkill , the moonshine and a half blind horse named Rick , furthermore I will introduce the lucky buyer to my aunt Maureen who has more hair on her face than I do . RE: how does traffic from CAT55 switch moule to Route switch module ( RSM)?
access your RSM: e.g. session 3 Once in, you create interfaces to each vlan via: interface vlan 100 no shut ip address . . You have created a virtual interface into vlan 100. Of course the vlan must be configured on the switch as well. You can repeat this config for each vlan to let your RSM act as a "router on a stick". Dear all, 1)I have a cat 55 switch which got 2 X 10/100BaseTX Ethernet module and 1 X Route Switch Module (RSM), so, I have 48 ports on the switches module and divided into 3 VLANs some of ports were set to VLAN 1, 2 3, and the RSM module is connect thru our WAN router to world, and RSM, the layer 3 device is used to route the traffic between VLANs but I don't know how does the traffic from the switches module do to RSM module as there is no cable connection or it do internally? 2)I found my RSM module is configured 3 VLANs inteface, 100.100.100.99, 100.100.200.99, 100.100.300.99, but I can't see there are phyiscal interface. Re: Convergence question - BCSN
1) Flash updates are responded to immediately (and then I think the timers are reset.) 2) D would be sending out a poison reverse while it is in holddown (which is 3 times longer than the update timer). And because it now has a route from B in its table it would ignore the poisoned updates. When a distant vector protocol sends out a "flash" update when a route goes down, do the neighboring routers who receive the "flash" update send out their own updates immediately or do they wait for their default update times (ie rip 's is every 30 seconds) to expire. 2. For those who have a copy of Cisco Press BCSN ISBN:1-57870-228-3: If you'll consider Figure 1-12 on page 25, why would Routers D and E go into holddown if the router mesh is using split horizon? >From what I can tell, Router d would be sending out poisoned reverse updates after Router C has updated its route to network 1.1.0.1 with the update received from router B. What is preventing Router C from changing its route information to what it is receiving from Router D. Thanx in advance . . .
