Netflow Bandwidth Manager

2001-01-20 Thread Charles Nunie

Hello,

We are using a cisco 3620 as our backbone router to the internet running
12.1(5) IOS. We have a billing system (RODOPI) which is able to run with
Cisco's Netflow for bandwidth management.

To connect to the internet we have a WAN which uses private and public IP
addresses and we want to use the Netflow to perform bandwidth management. This
would assign a particular bandwith (eg. 64, 128kbps) to a public or private IP
address on our WAN. No matter the location of the IP address on our WAN, we
would want that assigned bandwidth to be assigned to that IP address.

Please advise on the version of IOS we need to upgrade to and the
configuration parameters for the configuration of the bandwidth manager.

Regards,

Dzilo

SNMP-queries ???

2001-01-20 Thread Hans Schimek

i would like to configure SNMP on our network. but
reduce network traffic for snmp queries as far as possible.
i did this on a testrouter so far.
but debugging snmp packets - i noticed that every 2 seconds a query
is sent - i attached an extract of the log-file.
our network now has about 40-50 routers - so if i will enable
snmp on all of these devices - that would result in a heavy network load,
isn`t it-
but so far - we do need such a strictly network mangagement- for now we do
polling every 40 minutes -
but when there is an outage on one of those devices, the customer notices it
prior to our
NOC.
so i configured snmp traps - which works fine - in an acceptable time - but
THAT didn`t reduce
my snmp queries floods, either.

so please could anyone give me an advice, how i could reduce these snmp
queries.

thanx
hans

CCIE reading: TCP/IP by Doyle Vol.1 or 2

2001-01-20 Thread Eric Gunn

Hello,

I am looking at obtaining the books that are "Required reading" for the
CCIE lab, according to www.ccbootcamp.com. I have heard great things about
their perpetration labs and plan to buy them as soon as I can get my lab
pieced together from optsys.

The books listed are:

Internet Routing Architectures, Bassam Halabi
CCIE Prof. Development Routing TCP/IP Volume I, Jeff Doyle
Cisco Certification Bridges, Routers, and Switches for CCIE's, Caslow
Cisco Lan Switching (CCIE professional development)
Cisco Catalyst Lan Switching Louis R Rossi, Louis D. Rossi, Thomas Rossi

I noticed the TCP/IP book by Doyle has a Volume 1 and Volume 2. The first
book seems to be the foundation book while the second one goes into BGP.
Multicasting, etc.

The Architecture book by Halabib is a must have, from everyone that has
read it. It seems to be heavy in BGP more than other exterior routing
protocols. Is Doyle vol 2 worth reading back to front or are their better
reads one the list for that information?

Thanks,

-Eric Gunn

RE: CCIE reading: TCP/IP by Doyle Vol.1 or 2

2001-01-20 Thread Chuck Larrieu

According to Amazon, Doyle's volume 2 has a 6 week lead time. Has anyone
actually seen this one on the shelves yet?

Halabi is remarkably clear reading. But it never hurts to have a second way
of looking at things.

Doyle vol 1 is definitely a must. I would add Slattery / Burton Advanced IP
routing in Cisco Networks for the wealth of examples and router outputs.

One must read Caslow in the frame of mind in which it is intended. Caslow
expects that you already know the basics, and now you want to start thinking
like a CCIE. It is a book about problem solving, not a book about learning
fundamentals.

I don't usually step in to these little squirmishes,
but this is just plain rude.

Please, if you don't like something someone says/posts,

I haven't read Doyle's Vol2, but if volume1 is taken as an indicator, I'm
sure it'll be a good reference.
I've read the others that you have on your list, with the exception of the
Rossi book, and can confirm that you should have them on your shelf.
In addition, you really should obtain a copy of Interconnections by Radia
Perlman.

Many times ISPs won't do PPP multilink due to the overhead it
introduces.

I've found CEF per-packet to meet my company's needs. We
have two T1s to UUNet, and get ~350KB/sec upstream if the
other end can take it. That's pretty close to capacity,
and across the "public Internet", not too shabby.

Re: SNMP-queries ???

2001-01-20 Thread Circusnuts

Start with the recommendations from your SNMP Client (i.e. Open View,
NetView, Concord, Tavve). I believe Concord NetHealth recommends 15 minute
intervals. This really is miniscuel traffic the normal 10/ 100 LAN/ or 768
Kbps Frame/ OC3 WAN circuit. Support information from your SNMP client
should give you the Pro's & Con's to answer these questions (even influence
growth changes). The ratios are based on very calculated bandwidth, # of
devices, & server build stats. I work @ a very established NOC & we value
the polling almost more than any other traffic itself. This does represent
your eyes on the network.. while customer phone calls & RMON probes are the
ears.

All the best !!!
Phil

RE: Cat5500 question

2001-01-20 Thread Lou Nelson

Jason,
If you have a CAT 5500 and they suggest a new SUP... they are referring to
the first board the sup engine... IT is hardware... but in a 5500 you want a
sup 3 not a sup 1... The 5500 has 3 back plane's that are 1.2 gig each...
only the sup 3 will aggregate those into a combined 3.6 gig back plane
(Market Math). The sup 3 contains a phoenix chip that does this
aggregation. Even with the market math there... the sup 3 is far superior
for your box and gives you it true best speed.

RE: How to configure bind with less than a block of ip's?

2001-01-20 Thread Bob Vance

It's helpful to realize that there's really nothing different between a
"forward" zone and a "reverse" zone.

The former *generally* contains A (address records) and latter
*generally* contains PTR records, but, both zones can and do carry other
record types (SOA and NS, obviously, but CNAMEs, etc., also) -- it's
all just DNS data.

The magic is in what the DNS clients do when they request a lookup.
Viz.:

To get an IP address, when presented with a "name", a DNS client does an
"A"-record lookup on the name given, and this causes the nameserver to
look in what we call the "forward zone" for an "A" record, but it's only
because that's what the client asked for. E.g., when a client asks for
"a.b.c.com", the server ultimately looks in his "b.c.com" zone data and
we happen to call this the "forward zone".

But, when trying to look up a *name*, when presented with an IP address,
say "a.b.c.d", (which we call "reverse" lookup)
(e.g., an 'rlogin' server trying to find out the name of the
client machine from which the login is occurring so that he,
the 'rlogin' server, can check that name in the ".rhosts" file
   ),
the DNS client (which is the 'rlogin' server code in this example :)
requests a lookup for a "PTR" record, "d.c.b.a.in-addr.arpa." .
(Note that the above is generally hidden in library calls, e.g.,
gethostbyname and gethostbyaddr on Unix.
   )

All of that should pretty well be known, even by a newbie.

But, two major, non-obvious-to-the-newbie things, I think, that help
clear up the non-octet-reverse delegation are:

 1. valid CNAMEs can point to records *outside* the current zone
 foo.bar.com. IN A 1.2.3.4
 fubar.bar.com. CNAME yyy.yahoo.com.

 2. PTRs can have CNAMEs as well !
 4.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa. IN PTR foo.bar.com.
 5.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa. CNAME fandoo.bar.com.
 6.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa. CNAME 6.subxx.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa.
   (where fandoo.bar.com. and 6.subxx.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa.
would be PTR records in the bar.com and
subxx.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa zones, respectively.
   )

Your ISP is generally authoritative for the class C from which he has
parsimoniously given you a few addresses.
So he can handle the reverse PTRs for you -- if he wants to!!

If you are hosting your DNS, even though your ISP's kindly agreed to be
a secondary for your "forward" domain, he's not gonna want to be
bothered changing or adding PTR records while you can't decide on a good
name for one of your boxes. So you really want to handle the reverse
yourself. However, the ISP doesn't want to delegate to you the *whole*
class C in-addr.arpa domain (since there are other clients therein :).
However, he *can* delegate a *sub-domain* of the class C
in-addr.arpa to you, (since he's authoritative for the parent).

Then he can put CNAMEs in his parent pointing to the PTRs in
the sub-domain he delegated to you!

So, he is still authoritative for 3.2.1.in-addr.arpa, but has delegated
to you, say "hoohah.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa", which is a valid sub-domain of
"3.2.1.in-addr.arpa" .

Then he has
  1.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa. CNAME 1.hoohah.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa.
 ...
  6.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa. CNAME 6.hoohah.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa.

(or
  1CNAME 1.hoohah.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa.
 ...
  6CNAME 6.hoohah.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa.
since the ORIGIN, ".hoohah.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa. " will be appended to
those non-dot-terminated names.
And, probably done with a
  $GENERATE 1-6 $ CNAME $.hoohah.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa.
)

You are authoritative for "hoohah.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa" (since the ISP
delegated it to you) and in the zone master file for that domain, you
have:
  1.hoohah.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa.IN PTR www.bar.com.
  4.hoohah.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa.IN PTR foo.bar.com.
(or
  1IN PTR www.bar.com.
  4IN PTR foo.bar.com.
)
or whatever.
It doesn't really matter that you don't have the other records.

When a DNS client wants to do a reverse lookup on 1.2.3.4, he will
do a PTR request for 4.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa.
It will be found that the ISP is authoritative for 3.2.1.in-addr.arpa
and he will be queried for 4.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa.
But the CNAME will point to 4.hoohah.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa for which
you are authoritative and you'll be queried for it and will return
"foo.bar.com".
Voila!

Of course, the ISP will probably not call the sub-domain "hoohah", but
"0-7" or "sub-0-7" or "subnet-0" or "0/29" or something more meaningful.

I'm sure that the gurus will find and fill holes in the above, but
it should clarify things for you a bit.

terminal server flakey

2001-01-20 Thread Brian Lodwick

hi group,
I have configured a terminal server on a 2511. It works great in the
beginning, but then it starts to flake out on me. I'll try to report what
happens. I notice right when everything is powered up I can connect to all 8
of the routers connected using their hostname and it is exactly as I
expected. The issue normally occurs after I've been reverse telnetted into a
router for a little while then I back back out of that one and try to telnet
to another one and I can't get to it then after I can only get to a couple
of them. All of the connections are disconnected after I back out. It just
appears to be a glitch or possibly a timeout? Has anyone seen anything like
this before? The only way I can fix it is to reboot. I will outline the
config.

This may be the kicker I am using IOS 11.1 on the term. server. I am
planning to upgrade, but wanted to see if I was overlooking something.

All I did was on the terminal server I configured a host file for each
router calling them r1, r2, r3... using the loopback for the ip, and 200_
for the port. I have configured the lines with no passwords or timout
values, I only added transport input all for lines 0-8. Speeds are set to
9600.

On each of the other routers I have left the console line blank not even a
password is set.

Like I said everything works great in the beginning, but...
Thanks in advance guys!

>>>Brian

Re: Specialization for CCNA (in case you're not aware of it)

2001-01-20 Thread Arthur Stewart

Well, it's interesting, but having recently completed the CCNP, I have to
say I would not let an average CCNA or some CCNPs set up a PIX or implement
VPNs if I didn't think they knew something about routing and remote access
issues. Perhaps security is a niche market that can be adequately serviced
this way, but will anyone really get this 5 test certification (what is it
called - CCNA Security?).

Looking at the new CCNP-Security (5 ccnp and 4 security tests), I think I
would just go for the Security CCIE - fewer tests and probably a similar
study path. Of course I haven't seen what the Security Lab will be like,
but I'll bet it's product-centric.

The missing component in all these security certifications is a good dose of
non-vendor-specific information security and network security foundations.
The intro chapter in MCNS is good but not near enough.

Anyone with a routing & switching certification - CCNA, CCNP, CCIE - knows
quite a bit about routing and switching in general, whoever's routers and
switches are involved. The concepts have been covered. The same can't be
said about the Cisco security certifications. In fact, anyone who relies
primarily on the Cisco security certification process may or may not know
enough to provide a security solution that meet's a customer's needs.
Partial security solutions are not generally what customers are looking for.
Hopefully, part of the security certification process will include
mentioning that security policy, operating system security and other
security areas may need to be part of a coordinated security solution, but
are outside the scope of what Cisco security certification provides.

Re: BSCN

2001-01-20 Thread Seth Wilson

I'm studying for Routing as well. I don't have the ISBNs for these, but if
you want a good understanding of the material you should pick up Bassam
Halabi's Internet Routing Architecture, and Jeff Doyle's Routing TCP/IP.
I'm presently working my way through the Doyle book, and find the reading
both easy and informative. I've started Halabi's book and I'm a bit lost
with all the NAP's and NSF's of the overview, but it seems to be just as
informative. I think these are probably two very good texts to read. I do
plan on getting the Cisco Press BSCN book just to fill in any gaps for the
exam. Good luck.

Re: terminal server flakey

2001-01-20 Thread Kevin Wigle

"I have configured the lines with no passwords or timout"

If you didn't do anything then by default, exec will time out after 10
minutes.

So if you got all 8 lines up its pretty easy to think that a few might be
standing there unused for 10 minutes while you're playing with the
others.

So you have to give the command "exec-timeout 0 0" which will disable
timeout completely.

from CCO - the font of all knowledge (and the first hit on my search on
exec-timeout)

Setting the EXEC Timeout Intervals
The EXEC command interpreter waits for a specified interval of time until
the user starts input. If no input is detected, the EXEC resumes the current
connection. If no connections exist, the EXEC returns the terminal to the
idle state and disconnects the incoming session.

To set this interval, use the exec-timeout line configuration subcommand.
The full syntax of the command follows.

exec-timeout minutes [seconds]
no exec-timeout
The argument minutes is the number of minutes, and the optional argument
seconds specifies additional interval time in seconds. The default interval
is ten minutes; an interval of zero specifies no time-outs.

The no exec-timeout subcommand removes the time-out definition. It is the
same as entering exec timeout 0.

Example:
This command sets an interval of 2 minutes, 30 seconds.

exec-timeout 2 30

This command sets an interval of 10 seconds:

exec-timeout 0 10

Every console (con 0) needs the command.

We just had this discussion on this list a few days ago

Interesting question, which, I must admit, I've never thought about
or seen raised in operational forums. The concern tends to be much
more with the validity of prefixes than of ASN's.

If you were not a major transit provider, I don't think it would be
too likely to be a problem.

Missed by one darn point!

2001-01-20 Thread perryb

Hello all,

I took the CCIE written today and missed passing by a single question. The
problem is that I felt very good that I would easily pass, even as I was
approaching the very last question!

Back to the studying...I hope they'll be kind on the retake, but it is
rumored that the retake zeros in on your weak areas - that sure would be
painful.

That's not true. They don't keep track of which questions you missed. Good

Have you tried Cisco Press Performance & Fault Management (ISBN
1578701805). Chapters 4 thru 19 cover this topic of Performance Monitoring,
Performance Reporting, RMON (1&2), MIB's, & SNMP traps/ polling.

Re: terminal server flakey ~fixed

2001-01-20 Thread Brian Lodwick

Group,
I really appreciate Kevin's help I have implemented the exec-timeout 0 0
into the lines.
I just wanted to add another note for everyone on the list reading this.
I have been using Caslow's second edition (which I am very impressed with so
far) for my lab study. There is an additional note listed in Bruce's book
saying "With many versions of the IOS Terminal Server configurations may
result in lines listed as being used when they never have been used. A
remedy to this problem is adding the "Modem host" command in line
configuration mode in addition to the "transport input all" command.
Along with Kevin's advice and this additional command sessions shown are
accurate and don't timeout. It's working great. Thanks Kevin and Bruce.

Non-contiguous subnet masks

2001-01-20 Thread J. Kata

Supposedly, non-contiguous subnet masks are
legal because the rfc's don't restrict their
use. Are there any good resources where I can
read up on this subject? Has someone come across
their use in the real world?

And finally, can anyone answer these questions?

IP: 172.31.100.100
SM: 255.255.24.164

What subnet does this ip address belong to?
How many subnets does this mask support?
How many hosts does this mask support?
What is the broadcast address?

Thanks.

If this test was the limit of your knowledge, I'd hit the books again very
hard. I missed my last exam by less than 5 points & walked away with the
attitude "I'd been ripped-off." The next week (having only studied what I'd
missed), I failed the exam by 50 points & got a perfect score in the area I
restudied :-0

Just my experience with the "Almost Passed"

All the best !!!

Re: Non-contiguous subnet masks

2001-01-20 Thread Chris McCoy

J.

  Let's break this out:

172.31.100.100 - Host address

1010 1100.0001 .0110 0100.0110 0100 - in binary

255.255.24.164 - Subnet mask

 . .0001 1000.1010 0100 - in binary

We can tell this is a class B address, in the
traditional sense. As far as non-contiguous subnet
masks go, the rules are still the same. You count the
number of '1' bits to the right of the classful
boundry, which is 5. So you have five bits of
subnetting. This would equal 30 subnets or 31 subnets
if you count subnet-zero.

The subnets (not counting the first two octets) for
this mask in binary are:

.xxx0 0xxx.0x0x x0xx - 172.31.0.0 (subnet zero)
.xxx0 0xxx.0x0x x1xx - 172.31.0.4
.xxx0 0xxx.0x1x x0xx - 172.31.0.32
.xxx0 0xxx.0x1x x1xx - 172.31.0.36

.xxx0 0xxx.1x0x x1xx - 172.31.0.132
.xxx0 0xxx.1x1x x0xx - 172.31.0.160
.xxx0 0xxx.1x1x x1xx - 172.31.0.164

.xxx0 1xxx.0x0x x1xx - 172.31.8.4

The host bits are shown above as 'x' for clarity. We
have 11 bits of host, so we could have up to 2046
(2048-2) host addresses. If we do a bitwise logical
AND (a.b=?), we can tell what subnet host
172.31.100.100 is on:

1010 1100.0001 .0110 0100.0110 0100 - host
 . .0001 1000.1010 0100 - subnet mask
---
1010 1100.0001 . .0010 0100 - subnetwork

In decimal this is 172.31.0.36, the fourth subnet.
This represents, in the imortal words of one of my
instructors, the address of the whhr (wire). The
first host would be (dashes show network/subnet bits):

1010 1100.0001 . .0010 0101 - 172.31.0.37
   - -- - -
 .0010 0110 - 172.31.0.38 (second)
   - -- - -
 .0010 0111 - 172.31.0.39 (third)
   - -- - -
 .0010 1100 - 172.31.0.44 (fourth)
   - -- - -
 .0010 1101 - 172.31.0.45 (fifth)
   - -- - -

... and so on. The broadcast address would be:

1110 0111.0111 - 172.31.231.127
   - -- - -
Note there are all ones in the host bits.

I think you may see by now why so many people avoid
non-contiguous subnet masks. They're a royal pain to
use, it's next to impossible for a router to optimize
its table lookups without doing a one-for-one search,
and its difficult to look at two addresses and tell if
they're both on the same subnetwork.

Hope this helps...

2001-01-20 Thread Eric Gunn

Hello Perry,

Don't be discouraged. The same thing happened to me last week. I took the
test on Wednesday and failed by one point. I retook it the next day and
passed. Just to let you know in advance, the question pool is very large.
On my retake I only had like 15 or so questions out of the 100 that were
repeated on my next try.

Good Luck,

Now who should be kicked??!!
Racism is an ugly and intolerable thing

Jim In answer to your question, my company pays 100% for departmentally
related training. For me they paid for my Cisco and Sun training. For non
related training, (anything, any subject), they pay 80% up $4000 per year.
You may need to sign a term of employment agreement were you will be
responsible for repaying a % if you quit within the term.

Hope that helps!

Re: Missed by one darn point!

2001-01-20 Thread tv

I am from the view that you shouldn't look at these as tests. If you learn
the material and understand the concepts, you will be able to deduce the
answer to questions you do not know. This holds true for the lab. Let's
face it, you can not know everything that is in the IOS. But, if you
understand how a certain technology works, it is easy to figure out the
commands.

Re: CCIE reading: TCP/IP by Doyle Vol.1 or 2

2001-01-20 Thread Katson PN Yeung

Yes, this is very true that Dr. Perlman's book should be on the shelf
Here is my list (and the reading procedure.)

1. Interconnection 2nd edition
2. Routing TCP/IP vol 1
3. IRA. 1st edition
4. Caslow's 2nd edition.
5. Cisco ATM solution
6.Integrating Voice and data networks.

I have already finished 1-3 multiple times and I really find it is helpful
for my daily job. Now I am doing 4, after reading it from cover to cover, I
will go for a written test.

One more point, personally, I think Interconnection 2nd edition should be
read and understand before anything else...

Re: BGP Reg Expressions

2001-01-20 Thread Katson PN Yeung

I use a very very stupid method to do it. But it works I found that
all private AS path cannot be identified simply by the AS number That
is, you apply an ASpath filtering list likes "sh ip bgp reg ^65001_" will
not be able to display path beginning with 65001.

I tried serveral methods at last I found this.

"sh ip bgp reg ^.65001._".

Is this what you want?

2. Jon- I agree and most do, to your point as it is a known fact. But what our friend

Perhaps his company does not have a policy like the one you mentioned in place.
