Good Day, Has anyone had any luck using the CIM products. I have the switching CIM and have been a little disappointed with the labs. I am very confined in what commands I can enter. The simulation software doesn't even correctly reflect the changes i have made when using the show commands. Finally, VTP isn't working correctly on the switches. There are only 2 switches in my domain. Both are configured with the same domain name. I checked this about a dozen times. Actually both are configured as servers because the program would not let me configure one as a client. Anyway, to make a long storey short, it doesn't matter which switch i make changes to vlans on the changes are not seen on the second switch. Switch for home lab [7:32797]
Could someone suggest a switch that would be good for a home lab. I cant find a cat 5k (that I can afford) but might be able to get a 2901 or 2924. Do either of those fit the bill? I have found lots in the archives about routers for the home lab but not about which switches are needed. Also would one or 2 switches be enough? ISDN connector PIN configuration [7:32802]
Our Telecom only install the ISDN line on their krone block and end it with a pair of wire. Can we need to patch the pair of wire into a RJ45 connector (not RJ11 ) and connect it to the ISDN U interface port and make it work. But I am not sure about the PIN configuration of the connector. I would only focus on the 5K or, as I just learned, a 1200, as you need to know the set's, show's and clear's for the big test. The other switches are just annoying with all the different commands. You can definitely install a DB60 upside down. I won't even say I've watched a trainee do it, I've done it myself. If you are ready for the big toys.. the 5K is a good way to go. If and I do mean IF you shop carefully, you can find a Cat5K for under 800 US. Dont pay extra for the pretty ones with all the covers.. Do pay attention to what cards are included. The sups come in several different flavors. The cheapest is a SupI and unless you have fiber converters, make sure it has the 10/100 ports. There is not enough difference between the I and II to justify the difference in price for a lab.. the IIIs are pretty pricy but I can see where an advanced lab would have one. On the Ethernet blades, get at least a 5213A which can do ISL. A better bet is the 5203 which will do Etherchannel(required for CCNP) Again, this will drive up the cost. I bought mine very cheaply and then added a few items as time went on. Get a 2nd switch.. a 2912 which is cheaper then the 24 port version. This switch can run 10/100 on all ports and run Etherchannel on all ports. Now you can hook the two together and have some fun. Toss in a 2620/21 and you have a router on a stick for the vlans and you have saved over 1500 bucks on the RSM. Just my opinions.. You would be correct. We configure our switches to auto so the customer can choose their favorite LMI. Some providers force you to use ANSI which wil not provide CIR, hmm I wonder why they would do that... Whats the Diff between an Cisco 7204 and an 7204VXR. I can't seem to find it anywhere. When you do the config maker on Cisco's site they make you choose that one as the only option for the 7204. Are they the same thing. According to the docs, there ate 3 prod #'s. Cisco7204-DC, Cisco7204-CH and Cisco7204VXR. If you are talking about just books and study guides then Amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com can't be beat. Most of the time they will even have used materials for almost half off the cost of the new. Just make sure you are getting the exact same thing. I've never really needed any more than one of the Cisco press books and an Exam Cram. Try to find if Kip Petersen sp? is doing training in that area. Last that I knew he had moved to MentorTech. Previous to that he worked for the folks who had been doing the NetGun program. He was going to open a SJ area training center for MentorTech. They are now out of business. Hopefully he is still teaching. I understand and appreciate your concern but in the hundreds of frame connections I have done I have never seen LMI negociation fail becuse it was auto on the switches. Have I seen any bugs? Yes of coarse but overall they are a good router with plenty of umph espcially if you VXR it. Keep in mind a VXR is useless with anything less than a NPE300. Can I ask why you're buying 7204's vs. 7206's? I don't think the cost difference between the two is that great and you get 50% more slots - not to sound like a sales guy or anything. At any rate, my take on the VXR vs. non-VXR thing. The 'regular' 7200's were the first edition of the product line. The VXRs are the new, latest and greatest. I don't think you can put anything faster than a NPE-225 in a non-VXR chassis; so to get the performance boost of an NPE-300 or 400 you'll need to go with the VXR chassis. Taking a quick look at the price list (an old one at that) I don't see the non-VXR chassis listed as an option for the 7204. You used to be able to buy a 7202 but that doesn't seem to be offered anymore either. The on-line docs talk specifically about the MIX interconnects in the mid-plane of the VXR chassis; this is basically for TDM and/or voice applications. I think the bigger kicker is the support for the faster NPEs. http://cco.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/pcat/7200.htm#xtocid4 Of all the 7200's I've seen in production, they've all be 06's and VXRs except for two non-VXR 7206's that my client is looking to upgrade this year. Last note, there are a few less popular port adapters that aren't supported in the VXR chassis (a full-duplex T/R port adapter for one); I believe for all of those (and there's not many) PAs not supported by VXRs there are other modules that serve a similar purpose which are supported. So this should only bite you if you have a stock of existing PAs that you want to put into the new chassis. Have fun. Hi, Can anyone answer what is probably a simple question... I'm trying to set-up an async tunnel to allow for remote call logging and have the following question: If aaa model is in use with tacacs+ how do you get around the issue whereby 'autocommand telnet /stream' gets a response back requesting a login? I have tried adding 'no login authentication' on the remote router but this doesn't prevent the default aaa mode of local authentication kicking in. I cannot turn off tacacs+ so this is not an option. Can you bypass this in anyway??? I was thinking of scripting it in some way but hoped there was an easier answer. When I was doing formal protocol testing at the Corporation for Open Systems, our standards were officially international when they existed, but we accepted relevant national standards--or those we thought were relevant. Specifically, while the X.25 stack called for physical layers including X.21 bis, we accepted RS-232C. The electrical differences were insignificant. Both specify a DB-25 connector. But it turned that X.25 specifically points to ISO 2110 as the connector specification. We received a device to test from a European vendor, and plugged in the appropriate DB-25. No problem. To be sure nothing got loose, we then screwed down the retaining screws at the ends of the hood, noting it was a little difficult. After the device passed testing and was about to be returned, we found the awful truth. There is one teensy, tiny difference between ISO and EIA DB-25 connectors. ISO have metric screw threads and EIA have English. We eventually had to drill them out. In like manner, when it comes to the DB-60, I had a young friend who took an individual IQ test, which contained a timed test of putting various-shaped pegs in variously-shaped holes. The psychologist told him a good time was (let's say 3 minutes), but he completed it in about 30 seconds. He inquired what his speed meant. Tugging on the square peg stuck in the round hole, the psychologist grumbled it means you're very strong. Every DB 60 I have seen was NOT symmetrical and would take some cutting with tin snips to install upside down. You haven't seen such cables, so you think CCIEprep is on crack? This troubleshooting trick is as old as the Cisco training department. Probably older than you?! ;-) Actually, I checked my drawer of old cables and couldn't find any such cables, but I'm pretty sure they do exist. The 2901 uses the same CatOS images as the 5K, and for study purposes, is the exact same thing. The major difference between the 2901 and the 5K is that the 2901 is a fixed config with a Sup and a 12-port 10/100 ethernet blade built-in. If you want the functionality of being able to buy difference blades to use, then get the 5K. If you want it for a ethernet switch that you can do trunking, VLANs, etc, get the 2901. Mike W. Errors on Ethernet Ports on 6500?!?!?! [7:32853]
This is wild stuff, so I thought I'd run it by GroupStudy to see if anyone had seen this before or knew what caused it. We're currently migrating connections from a 5513+RSM to a new 6509+Sup2/MSFC2. There were three ethernet connections, that upon being moved from the 5500 to the 6500, starting showing input errors and CRC errors. When these connections were moved, the port on the 6500 was configured identically to the same port on the 5500 as far as speed, duplex, VLAN assignment, and spanning tree settings. These same devices (same patch cables and all) created no errors on the 5500 whatsoever. Here's the kicker: When we went back and changed the port speed/duplex to auto on the 6500, it negociated the same speed/duplex settings we had forced, but now there were no more errors. (i.e. a server set for 100-Full, that was plugged into a switchport on the 5500 forced to 100-Full was fine, but plugged into a port on the 6500 forced to 100-Full caused errors, and plugged into the exact same 6500 port set for auto speed/duplex had no errors.) Any ideas on why letting the switch detect settings caused no errors while forcing it to those same settings causes errors? Thanks, Mike W.
