I just upgraded my lab with 2 more 2500's and I upgraded them mem in them with this mem http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=4X36FPM It was only 9 bucks so I said what the hey and I got lucky it works. By the time I got to doing the portchannel on the 6509b, users were calling like crazy Once I finished, all was fine again. The message I got was related to the portchannel not having the same vlan mask on both ends. What do debug and protocol analyzer traces show you? > > The router has directed broadcast forwarding disabled. > I thought the router would therefore drop the packet The router should not forward the packet onto the network in question if you have "no ip directed-broad" configured on the outgoing interface. I have verified that routers handle this correctly, at least in my lab. However, I have seen some strange behavior with these routers (running IOS 11.0, by the way). The routers respond to the ping themselves! They don't forward, but they do respond, (regardles of the configuration for directed broadcasts.) Here's the scenario where I've seen this: internetwork-e0-Cisco router-e1Ethernet LAN e0 ip addr 10.10.0.2 255.255.255.0 e1 ip addr 192.168.40.2 255.255.255.0 I ping from somewhere on the internetwork to 192.168.40.255. With "no ip directed-broad" configured, the router doesn't forward the packet, but it does respond to the ping. The reply comes from 10.10.0.2. Cisco routers accept this reply and say that the ping succeeded. Windows 98 DOS ping does not accept this reply (because it comes from 10.10.0.2 and not the address that the ping was sent to). It is kind of strange that the router responds, so if your scenario is similar, I can see why you ask the question. Of course your scenario could be completely different too, and there are probably numerous other reasons that you could be seeing replies, depending on your config, tools, etc. ___ Priscilla Oppenheimer www.troubleshootingnetworks.com www.priscilla.com > > Any thoughts > Thanks > -P > > Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=57812&t=57780 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And because this stuff typically goes through a firewall, I need a TCP VPN connection. It would be great if Cisco's routers supported this feature; then I could get read of the 3002 and 3005 and just use two routers as the endpoints of the connection. RE: Confreg problem...help! [7:57732]
Robert, Aux could only work if you had configured the router before now to accept Aux connections. The only posible solution is for you to go through the console port. Using a PC with a Terminal emulator set its parameters to: 9600 baud rate No parity 8 data bits 1 stop bit No flow control Using the appropraite console cable, connect the router to the PC, run the terminal software and set the parameters as suggested above. Then: 1. Switch off the Router 2. Press [Enter Key] to connect to the router (do not mind, you will not see anything displayed on the screen) 3. ON the router and type in the break sequence (depending on your terminal emulaion software and the OS you are running, your break sequence could be i.Ctrl+Break ii.Ctrl+F6+Break iii.Ctrl+a+f iv.Ctrl+b v.Ctrl+End vi. Break vii.control+shift+6+b etc!!! which ever works for you.) 4. Then on Rommon> Type "confreg 0X2142" ..To boot from flash. 5. On rommon > type "Reset" This makes the router to boot from flash and ignore its configurations. 6. Type "No" after the setup question of oress Ctrl+C 7. On Router> type "Enable" 8. On Router#type "copy startup-config running-config" 9. On Router# type "Config t" 0. On Router(config-t)# type "config-register 0x2102" 1. On Router(config-t)#type end 2. On Router# type "copy running-config startup-config With these you are set. RE: passed cit. that's a wrap on ccnp [7:57741]
I agree from my experience CIT is the hardest with Routing 2nd, Remote 3rd and Swtiching last. I missed passing the CIT by 6 measly points. I'm taking it next month again, congrats and keep on going!! Any advice on CIT please send to my email address. Does anyone have experience with Amazon routers from ACC? I need to put a 7206 in-line to replace a failing Amazon and the commands are difficult to match up to the Cisco world. Re: passed cit. that's a wrap on ccnp [7:57741]
I Agree with you. CIT was probably the easiest for me as well. Routing was definately the hardest. For other studying for the CCNP i reccommend taking Routing as your 3rd test. I found myself referring back to my routing book often while studying for CIT as I had forgotten some of the fram formats and such. Re: 802.1q trunking [7:57772]
DON'T TRUST THE CODE ON THE 35XX SERIES SWITCHES. Sorry for yelling, but its that important. I've seen repeated situations like this: router switch 1 switch 2 With a daisy chained configuration like this I've seen multiple instances where a vlan that is done correctly on the router won't work on switch 2, even though all the links are set up for trunking. I've tried forcing this situation with allowed vlan configs and so forth, and its just a pain in the you-know-what. It seems less of a hassle with the most recent code, but I never go in and offer a design like that - its just way, way too risky. PA-FE-TX are about $500 on the aftermarket - have them buy you a couple for the 7206, run lines to the switches, and handle each one as an individual connection. RE: Multicast question [7:57774]
I do not think it is turned on by default. ip multicast-routing is the command to crank it up. by default, it will be sent out of all ports on your Cats. We are using igmp snooping here. It is better than cgmp. We once opened up a ticket to understand the difference. RE: VoIP Question AGAIN... [7:57747]
Andrew- Without having done this, I could be wrong, but from your excerpt "You can think of the ephones with the numbers that were assigned to the ephone-dn's as FXS ports on the routers.", I would say then that all you have to do is create your dial-plan, and then define VOIP Dial-peers with the destination target being the IP address of the IP Phones. If it is that simple, then you will up and running in a heartbeat. Be sure and look at cisco's router to router (FXS to FXS) dial-peer samples to get an idea of your syntax. You may have to play around with voice quality settings though. Good luck Mark (Aspiring AVVID Engineer/Architect) :) -Original Message- From: Andrew Dorsett [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, November 20, 2002 8:07 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: VoIP Question AGAIN... [7:57747] Bruce - Actually I'm not missing any pieces. Check out this link on the CCO to see exactly what I'm trying to accomplish: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk652/tk701/technologies_configuration_e xample09186a00800ffdcc.shtml#background The router (3640,etc) utilizes the ITS feature set to act as the call manager for the network and create a small IP Key system without a few of the call manager features that I don't need in this case. And yes I want to use the 79xx phones behind the switch that I didn't mention is behind the router. I will use the FXO ports on the router to plug the incoming lines into. The page shows everything from how to do hold music to how to configure the phones XML interface. However it leaves out the PSTN setup section which is where I'm stuck at. I think I can do a session target to the ephone-dn but I'm not sure of the syntax. "Configuring the PSTN Connection on the Cisco ITS Router Assuming that the ITS router has voice interface cards, you will now want to configure those cards so that calls can be placed to and from the IP phones. This is not significantly different than other voice connections on a router. You can think of the ephones with the numbers that were assigned to the ephone-dn's as FXS ports on the routers." Re: pix vpn [7:57740]
Ciaron, You know, I've been impatiently waiting for the same feature. When I teach classes that are remote for Boson, we use a 3002 and a router. I need to set up a GRE tunnel and then encrypt this tunnel. And because this stuff typically goes through a firewall, I need a TCP VPN connection. It would be great if Cisco's routers supported this feature; then I could get read of the 3002 and 3005 and just use two routers as the endpoints of the connection. If anyone knows if/when Cisco has plans for adding this feature to their routers and PIXs, I'm sure quite a few people would be interested in this information. Cheers -- Richard A. RE: 802.1q trunking [7:57772]
Is this all 1 flat VLAN now ? If so, read below: If so , and you just want to migrate, I would assign a secondary address to the FE port on the Router that is a 10.x.x.x scheme that you want. This will allow you to have both active and not need to worry about what port that a PC is plugged into. Otherwise, you will be changing the IP of the PC then changing its port VLAN membership on the switch. The method that you are trying will work, but it's a more work then you need to do if your just migrating from one IP name space to the other. If you assign a secondary address to the router, all you will need to do is to change the IP of the PC's and reboot. If your running DHCP, change its scope so it hands out 10.x.x.x address's and as the current leases expire, they will get a new one. Once all the old address space is gone, just go into the router and type the ip address 10.x.x.x.x command without secondary on the end. This will move this IP to the primary address and remove the old address from the router. Tada, your done. If you want to use separate subnets on each floor, then you would need to use sub-interfaces which I am sure others will cover in detail. If not, I will jump back in. I would like to do this on a gradual basis. My building contains the following equipment: 7206VXR router that does internal routing. I have one FastEthernet port on this router. A VTP domain is set up between the 3 switches. It was suggested to me to put 3 subinterfaces on the fastethernet port on the router and then trunk them to the switch (or switches). I'm not quite sure of the best way to go about doing this. I've read numerous tac articles, but a little more guidance would be greatly appreciated. Re: VoIP Question AGAIN... [7:57747]
Bruce - Actually I'm not missing any pieces. Check out this link on the CCO to see exactly what I'm trying to accomplish: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk652/tk701/technologies_configuration_example09186a00800ffdcc.shtml#background The router (3640,etc) utilizes the ITS feature set to act as the call manager for the network and create a small IP Key system without a few of the call manager features that I don't need in this case. You can think of the ephones with the numbers that were assigned to the ephone-dn's as FXS ports on the routers." Andrew, You are asking how to set something up without all the pieces necessary to make it work. And you are describing developing a dialplan that does not adhere to common conventions. That part is okay, you can define how you route calls in-to and out-of your own voice network pretty much any way you want. The 3640 with an analog FXO is okay to act as a gateway to the PSTN. The same router with FXS VIC ALSO will allow you to connect and originate calls internally. However, you state you want to place "VOIP" phones on the network behind the 3640. What "VOIP" phones would those be? If you mean 79XX series IP Telephones from Cisco, you also need a CallManager Server to control those phones. As far as the dialing rules in this network, it is up to you what you use to direct calls out to the world. Using "9" to classify all telephone numbers that follow it as being sent to the PSTN is a convention not a rule. The only real rule is that you have to give the system the means to route a call based on what the User dials. AND, if you are handing the call off to the PSTN or any other telephone switch, you have to give that switch the call routing information (telephone number) that it needs to route the call. In coming calls are a whole different topic. Try reading one of the many VoX books that are now available. Hope this helps, Bruce Andrew Dorsett wrote: Second call for this one. I never received any answers to my question. I want to know how to setup the link between the VoIP phones and the FXO's. Basically a dialplan, but how do I route inbound calls from the PSTN to the VoIP phones? And how do I route outbound calls from the VoIP phones over the FXO to the PSTN? I would like to avoid a system that uses 9 to dial an outside line. I want to do direct dialing to the PSTN without any special steps. Thanks, Andrew On Thu, 14 Nov 2002, Andrew Dorsett wrote: Hey everyone, I'm playing with an idea. I want to get ahold of a 3640 with FXO's and interface it to the PSTN and connect to some VOIP phones on a network behind it. I have done all of my research on the CCO and have found how to configure everything for phone connection and FXO configuration. However I haven't found out how to configure dialplans to dial the outside world. I basically need one that would say "all 4 digit dialed calls are VoIP phones and all other numbers are outside PSTN phone numbers." And another question that I haven't found is how to link inbound calls from the PSTN to my VoIP phones. Say I have 555-1221 for one line and I want it as line 1 on my phones, and 555-1234 as the other line on my phones. I haven't found how to map the inbound calls to a VoIP extension. 555-1221 -- | || | || | 3640 ||SWITCH|-|IP Phone| 555-1234 -- | || | || My primary info source has been: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk652/tk701/technologies_configuration_example09186a00800ffdcc.shtml#ITS3660 Thanks, Andrew --- http://www.andrewsworld.net/ICQ: 2895251 Cisco Certified Network Associate "Learn from the mistakes of others. Thanx again. p.s. and if anyone knows of a link to www.cisco.com, that I can see the Ipsec throughput performance numbers for 3des on, especialy for the 800 series routers, please let me know.
