1601, dial-in server... [7:13285]

2001-07-22 Thread Justin

hey all :)
Im trying to configure my 1601, to recieve calls via async serial port, and
initiate a ppp connection, like an access server..
i can make it dial out and connect to my isp. etc, but i cant seem to get
it to do the opossite.
i've looked on cisco.com and im starting to think its not possible on these
type of routers ?
anyone done this ??

thanks :)
Justin

2000-05-25 Thread Justin

hey could someone help me please :) i've got my modem connected to serial port
in async mode and i connect to my isp,and its working fine but i just did debug dialer
before it
dialed, and it ses there is no matching chat script for the number im dialing
like it said its working ok, but i would like it to use my chat script i think
:P

also
while i did the debug dialer.. it came up with a message,
recieved incoming call from "my dial string number"
does that mean my isp has its equipment set to ring me back to make a
connection or does it mean something else :P ?

last thing :)
how do i shutdown the dialer, are there any ways to do it besides turning off
modem or a "shutdown" in the serial port ?

thanks before is my configuration regarding the chat script not found question
:)

Re: IP unnumbered [7:18250]

2001-09-02 Thread Justin

you might use it if you had say an access-server
e.g you got group-async 1 and group-async
the router wont let you do 'ip address 10.0.0.1 255.0.0.0" on both interfaces
so instead you would assign 10.0.0.1 to loopback 0
and then in group-async 1 & 2
ip unnumbered loopback 0
thus giving them both the same ip :)

speaking of ID... i've taken a couple of tests at different prometric
testing places in melbourne, australia,
and not one of them has asked for any ID. i havnt had to sign anything or

ya it is very dependant on the person i suppose... i wont get into my
prometric-phone trouble...
but att one of the testing sites, i told the secretary i was there. So she
went to setup the test.
45 minutes later she still isnt back i suspect something is wrong :P
so she comes back finaly "oh sorry, i set up the exam and went off, i
forgot you were here"
not to mention she didnt ask for id...
chimps are getting smart these days i hear? not to mention a chimp on

fail the exam :)

RE: Frame Relay - Lessons Learned...

2001-01-29 Thread Justin Menga

This is pretty common knowledge:

1. ALWAYS match your OSPF network types - it is not just related to
Hello/Dead timers, the protocol operates totally differently for each mode
(e.g. point-to-point - no DR).

You should know this stuff like the back of your hand. Study the way
adjacencies are formed on each of the network types

I too discovered this last night. I believe that part of the problem may be
in the absence of frame map statements, more specifically the lack of the
broadcast parameter, the LSAs are not getting propagated to the neighbors.
Any thoughts to this theory?

Subject: Frame Relay - Lessons Learned...

Well, =20
I hope buy now everyone has opened all their gifts and already =
know what it is they want for christmas next year.
In joy of the spirit I decided to work on some areas which I believe as =
mentioned by numerous member on list is of crucial importance in CCIE =
lab. In this spirit I've learned another lesson, which goes as =
follows...

In this lab scenario the goal was to connect 3 routers R1, R2, and R3 in =
the typical HUB and Spoke topology. In a partial=20
mesh all routers should be able to ping each other with out the use of =
the "frame-relay map" command with only sub-interfaces allowed in the =
HUB device.

Now, this is reasonably easy as this leaves 2 options to complete the =
required task. Configurations as follows=20
could get this done. The use of various sub-interfaces with the =
"frame-relay interface-dlci" command depending=20
on other lab specific requirements(i.e multiple nets/subnets) or the use =
of a multi-point sub-interface to support both=20
spoke(s) over one network address assignment. =20

I used 2 sub- interfaces to specify 2 networks. What I observed was, =
although I had a neighbor adjacency between
both spokes and the HUB(R1), the spokes was not learning the other =
network through OSPF. I could ping the=20
HUB(R1) from both spokes, but could not ping through to R3(spoke) and =
vise-versa. I know.. no ospf what do you expect..! =20
Another observation was from the Spoke devices R2 and R3 the HUB(R1) =
showed up as a BDR in full state.=20
As well from the HUB the both spokes(R2,R3) showed up as adjacent =
neighbors in FULL state. =20

Closer investigation showed that from the HUB both sub-interfaces were =
using ospf network type point-to -point, however=20
from the spokes(R2,R3) being physical interfaces and using the default =
of broadcast. Well, this really doesn't stand
as both of these network types use a 10 sec Hello timer and a 40 sec =
Dead timer.. right!

Wrong, apparently although the ospf network types hello/dead values =
matched this did not allow ospf to propagate the other networks to the =
spokes. What solved this was either changing the spokes ospf network =
type to p-t-p as to match the HUB, or=20
changing the HUB links to broadcast. When this was done the spokes both =
now knew of the other net work. =20

In doing some quick research Calsow's book makes mention of setting all =
interfaces to point-to-multipoint. He also=20
mentions the problems faced with ospf network type mis-matches. If one =
is not careful this could present a few problems and being not overly =
confident in my frame-relay skill-set would likely look to something in =
that part of the config for the answer to
my problem

Thoughts anyone...or is this common knowledge?

Nigel.

I sent this out yesterday, but never saw it come back from the group. This
is the second version of the configs I've posted, having corrected some of
the other problems.

I'm trying to get a new ISDN simulator to work in the in lab. It's an
Emutel Lite, and I seem to be close, but not quite there yet on the
configuration. I've attached both router configurations, the "show ISDN
status" and "show Int BRI 0" output, as well as what the "debug ISDN"
commands provide.

Any thoughts are welcome...

Re: OT: Star Wars

2001-03-06 Thread Justin Emilio

I couldn't agree more. But Jar Jar will unfortunately be in the next episode
and probably the last one too. Theforce.net has posted many rumors from
sources that are very accurate saying that Jar Jar will not be a huge part
in the movie as well as being more mature and not as stupid/annoying.

RE: how does traffic from CAT55 switch moule to Route switch module ( RSM)?

2000-12-09 Thread Justin Menga

access your RSM:

e.g. session 3

Once in, you create interfaces to each vlan via:

interface vlan 100
  no shut
  ip address . .

You have created a virtual interface into vlan 100. Of course the vlan must
be configured on the switch as well. You can repeat this config for each
vlan to let your RSM act as a "router on a stick".

Dear all,

1)I have a cat 55 switch which got 2 X 10/100BaseTX Ethernet module and 1 X
Route Switch Module (RSM), so, I have 48 ports on the switches module and
divided into 3 VLANs some of ports were set to VLAN 1, 2 3, and the RSM
module is connect thru our WAN router to world, and RSM, the layer 3 device
is used to route the traffic between VLANs but I don't know how does the
traffic from the switches module do to RSM module as there is no cable
connection or it do internally?

2)I found my RSM module is configured 3 VLANs inteface, 100.100.100.99,
100.100.200.99, 100.100.300.99, but I can't see there are phyiscal

RE: Still doesn't work: tough VPN question

2000-12-10 Thread Justin Menga

Hi,

Are you using NAT anywhere in the setup - NAT breaks some NetBIOS stuff,
particularly domain logons and NT trusts.

NAT meaning are you referencing the DC by a false IP address, or by it's
valid address.

If you are not using NAT, then forget about the IPSec, just think of it as a
router to router link. You will be attempting to talk to the DC using
internal addressing, so really all that is required on the remote end is
that the WINS server entries are configured correctly OR a manual LMHOSTS
entry.

Hello,

Thank you guys for the help. Unfortunately, I tried to
put LMHOST file, still doesn't work. We use WINS and I
can ping domain controller using name so I don't think
it's naming issue.

I used a sniffer captured some data, client is sending
logon request to domain controller but didn't get any
response. Looks like PIX blocks it. How do I open
it(port 137, 138, 139)?

Thanks in advance.

RE: last try: tough VPN question

2000-12-11 Thread Justin Menga

Hi,

THe only thing I can think of is that the original packet is being NAT'ed
before IPSec encapsulation. This breaks NetBT, as some of the NetBT
includes IP addresses within the NetBT packet. I have seen logons not work
over NAT.

You could try the following to exclude VPN traffic from being NAT'ed:

access-list EXCLUDE ip x.x.x.x m.m.m.m y.y.y.y m.m.m.m
nat (inside) 0 access-list EXCLUDE

Here x.x.x.x m.m.m.m is the local PIX internal network (e.g. 192.168.10.0
255.255.255.0) and y.y.y.y m.m.m.m is the remote NT server network.

Hello,

Let me re-describe the situation:

Central office 7100 router, site office PIX (NAT
overload 1 public ip address), IPSec tunnel is
establised, clients at site office can't logon NT
domain but can do everthing else.

Today, I replaced the PIX with a 3620 router (same
IPSec setup), everything works fine. Clients can logon
NT domain.

I think that proves 1)I don't have naming issue 2) PAT
works with IPSec. I don't understand why PIX wouldn't
work. Please see my PIX config.

Thanks in advance.

slow ping response to ethernet hosts but not serial interfaces

2000-09-21 Thread Justin Vo

Hi,

I'm having trouble of identify what's wrong when I'm pinging a host on a
small network. I'm getting an average of 150ms of response time. The WAN
link is 2MB microwave and not being utilised at this stage. Pinging the
serial interfaces give me average of 2ms only. Even when I'm pinging the
f0/0 of the router, I'm getting the same response as pinging a host on the
same network.

I already make sure fast switching is enable (default anyway) and the two
routers are 2620 and 3620 with very low utilisation.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

Thank you for the suggestion but it does not have any debug enable.

RE: personal firewall verification

2000-10-29 Thread Justin Menga

If you use a Checkpoint firewall, you can install the Checkpoint VPN client
and block Internet access to the VPN client whilst it has a connection to
the internal network. THis is called Desktop Policy and is configurable
from the firewall.

Hello,

My company is going to deploy VPN. Their concern is
that hackers can get into users PC and then from there
get into coporate network. They want to make sure all
VPN users connect to coporate network use personal
firewall (sonicwall or linksys). My question is: how
can I verify that users use or not use firewall?

Thanks in advance.

RE: 3640 terminal connections

2000-10-30 Thread Justin Menga

You need to configure reverse telnet:

First, you need to determine the line number for each port. To do this, use
show line command. Once you have a line number, add on 2000 to get the
reverse telnet port.

E.g. if line number = 32, then port = 2032

Use the ip hostcommand for each device you are
accessing. The best practice for the IP address is to create a loopback
interface and assign an IP address to it, as this interface is always up.

e.g.

int lo0
 ip address 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.255

ip host R2511 2032 1.1.1.1(this reverse telnets to host R2511 on line
32)
ip host R2522 2033 1.1.1.1(this reverse telnets to host R2522 on line
33)

Subject: 3640 terminal connections

I am currently working on establishing a terminal server configuration for
my 3640 router. my 3640 is configured with the following:

Slot 0: Async32A
Slot 1: Async32A
Slot 2: Ethernet0

With this configuration, I am looking to configure my system to allow a
telnet connection to be established to each on of my devices connected to my
async ports. I have a octopus cable that goes to several compaq servers.
These servers should be able to be accessed through a serial cable connected
to each.

Can anyone provide some insight into addressing this issue? Thanks a bunch
in advance!

unknown routing protocol ?

2000-11-10 Thread Justin Marcus

hello :)

i have a slight problem
ok.. im my 16xx router i was using ios 11.2 ip-only,
anyways i wanted to config bgp to play around with, so in the correct mode
i did a "router ?", and bgp was listed, then when i did "router bgp 1" (or
anyone AS) it said unknown routing protocol. then i tried it in 11.3 with
"bnr2sy56", anyways i did the same thing, checked to see if bgp was
listed, and it was so i did "router bgp 1" again, the same error came up
"unkown routing protocol", now it works fine in ip-only 12.0 and
upwards...

does anyone no what the problem could be ? or howto enable bgp on those
ios's..

thanks heaps :)

Justin..

Re: ISDN call rejected

2000-11-15 Thread Justin Vo

The process never get to ppp authentication hence a debug ppp authentication
does not show anything. Cisco suggested to removed the max-link 1 but yet
it's not help. Strange enough it works now. The only things I changed is the
isdn switch type from basic ts-013 to basic-net3 since Australia is using
Isdn switch type of Europe (which I think that's not the problem because I
tried to change that but it does not help) and I add the ppp encapsulation
and ppp authentication to BRI interface as well.

Now it works. I'm not 100% of the problem but it works now. Anyone can give
an explaination ?

Thanks again for all the suggestion.

a relativly simple way could be to use a program called
'autoexpect' its for *nix though :P (apologies if you said you were
running NT or something, didnt read original message thoroughly)
what it pretty much does is log commands you type in, and make them into a
script. basicaly you can do those same commands next time by just running
the script, thus saving time :P

IP NAT Issue [7:3073]

2001-05-03 Thread Justin Emilio

I am using a Cisco 2505 router which has a built in 8 port hub. This hub
acts as 1 ethernet interface and I would like to use NAT to allow a network
that is connected to the built in hub to be able to connect out to the
internet through another port on the hub using 1 globally routable address
with overloading. I tried using both "ip nat inside" and "ip nat outside" on
the ethernet interface, but you can only use one of those commands on an
interface. I played with different configurations yesterday and couldn't get
any to work correctly. Should I be able to accomplish this? If anyone could
help that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: IP NAT Issue [7:3073]

2001-05-03 Thread Justin Emilio

I still don't understand why I shouldn't be able to translate an address
from one interface and out the same interface. I use that interface as my
gateway for private addresses, so it will obviously will not be able to use
the hub to get out on the internet. It seems like a limitation from Cisco
that will not allow the "ip nat inside" and "ip nat outside" command to be
placed on one interface. If I am wrong and this logically cannot work please
fill me in. I just don't understand why I couldn't do that.

Load Balancing for Applications [7:8260]

2001-06-12 Thread Justin Emilio

I have a home lab that I use for studying and I work for a DSL company. I
have a cable modem connection that gets great download speeds (Like 3Mbps)
but has horrible latency. I love to play video games that require low ping
times. To take care of this my company gives me dsl for free, so I have
cable modem for downloading and other internet uses and DSL for video games.
Anyways, my question is this: how could I implement some sort of load
balancing feature that would allow me to play games (I know the ports they
use) over the DSL line, and everything else on the cable modem?

bandwidth reading [7:8301]

2001-06-12 Thread Justin Vo

Hi all,

When someone say an ISDN link of 128 Kbps, this is the total traffic of
Incoming + Outgoing traffic isn't it ?

I just need to verify because I think some of our IT staff are reading the
graph incorrectly. The graphs are showing incoming and outgoing on the same
graph (using MRTG).

Thanks
Justin Vo

Re: bandwidth reading [7:8301]

2001-06-13 Thread Justin Vo

Hi Brian,

Thank you for your response. The answer I'm seeking is that does WAN media
operates similar to a full duplex of LAN media or just a single stream of
traffic can travel at any one time on the link. Another word, when some one
say 64 Kbps bandwidth, it would mean that the maximum traffic can occuppy
the link is 64 Kbps regardless of incoming or outgoing traffic or 64 Kbps
incoming and 64 Kbps outgoing.

>From what you're saying, it will be 64 Kbps incoming and 64 outgoing right ?

Re: High output errors [7:8633]

hi,

You should set the switch port to a fix speed that the hub can take. If the
hub is only a 10Mb hub then set the switch port to 10Mb half duplex. This
will eliminate some potential problem.

Brian,

I've seen so many network engineers with NO experience in the Unix
arena. I am not trying

to start a flame war here. Moreover, I am not asking network engineers to
be an expert with

Unix. Just know enough so that you can get the job done. I work for an
ISP and I have

CCIEs come to me and ask me to troubleshoot Tacacs+ (our company runs
Tacacs on Linux

and BSD platforms) and add/delete Tacacs account and restart Tacacs
process. Come on

guys/gals, at this level, a CCIE should know a little bit about Unix
platforms, how to restart

a process, reboot the system and install the software (by the way, we
compile Tacacs from

the source code). That's why I really Juniper Operating System (JUNOS).
Juniper requires

users to be familiar with Unix Operating Systems because Juniper is
derived from BSD

Operating System. No wonder Juniper is kicking Cisco's ass in the
carrier space.

RE: SPAN question on 6509 [7:8959]

2001-06-18 Thread Brady Justin

He is right about the sniffer being connected a 100Mb port. And you are
also right about it only being around 120Mbps. What you also have to
remember is that if these are broadcast packets (which if they are, you have
a little bit of a problem), they are being sent out every port (100Mb X 48 X
number of cards), therefore filling up your backplane and maxing out your
network. If you have several 48 port cards then you are utilizing that
switch heavily. If all that is legitimate traffic, there is a card you can
buy to upgrade the backplane to 256Gbps. Happy hunting and I hope you find
the problem.

Re: CCIE Starter & Lab Equipment [7:37312]

2002-03-05 Thread Justin C

Danie,

I built my home lab entirely from Ebay. There are some good vendors on
there, but the phrase "buyer beware" always comes to mind. I always look at
the sellers feedback, not just for positive ratings but to see if they have
sold equipment in the dollar value I am purchasing. Look to see if the
seller has positive feedback on equipment in that price range. The sellers
I can recommend (based on my own purchases and those of people I personally
know) are:

networkhardwareresale - great packaging, good prices, quick shipment;
bluedesperateboy - good packaging, fair prices (little high, but top notch
equipment); ciscoware; www.whirled-routes.com; magi-tech; snootfull; lskok

If you look up their feedbacks, you will see the amount of business they do.
If you are after good deals, be patient about purchasing and watch for
good products at good-to-fair prices. It took me two months to build my
home lab (Catalyst 5000 w/ Sup 2, 2-2501, 2-2503, 1-2502, 1-2513, 1-4000M,
1-2620, 1-2522, 1-2511RJ, 2-2900 Cat switches, plus all serial/ethernet
cables) for around $9500. All of it from Ebay, and all of it worked when I
received it. Costly yes, but nothing beats continuous hands on experience
with the equipment for months (six so far) on end. Plus, I can configure
almost anything I find in the CCNP and CCIE books I have (save some Token
Ring and ATM of course), which is nice when you have questions about
technologies and want to experiment to learn more about them. Personally, I
will rent rack time to get at the 3900/3920 switches and ATM configurations.
Also, I have not purchased from them, but Optsys.net has some pretty good
deals on 2501 and 2503 router packages. I will be purchasing an ISDN
simulator from them later this month.

As for the Catalyst 5000 switch, you can substitute a Catalyst 2901 or a
Catalyst 2926T (the "T" means 10/100T connections on the supervisor module
versus the 10/100 Fiber connections on the 2926F). Search the archives for
additional information on rack recommendations AND Ebay sellers to steer
clear of as the topic gets brought up at least once a month.

Best of luck to you in your studies.

My apologies to the group for any perceived waste of bandwidth on this often
discussed topic. After reading about it for the past seven months, I just
wanted to drop my $.05 on the table.

Regards,

Justin Cluer

Dear All, I've recently started active study on CCIE and have limited
experience but CCNP knowledge on Cisco kit. I'm in the process of buying
what I need and I need some advice on where to start and would like to find
out how you guys started out. What do I need for my home lab? I've looked
at auctions on Ebay, is it alright to buy second-hand? Is there IOS upgrades
available free from Cisco? If any of you know a good link to a specific
equipment list I need I'd be very grateful, I've had a look on the Cisco
Routing and Switching Lab equipment list but they only had the following -
no real specifics:
2500 series routers
2600 series routers
3600 series routers
4000 and 4500 series routers
3900 series token ring switches
Catalyst 5000 series switches

I can only afford up to 3600 series routers, what can I do about the rest?

Thank you for your help and I think this is a great group.

Kind Regards,

Re: SOHO vpn making connection VERY VERY slow.- OFF TOPIC [7:37492]

2002-03-06 Thread Justin C

Jerry,

Check the code revisions on your Watchguard products. The SOHO units are
specified by Watchguard at 500Kbits/sec of 3DES throughput. See if
Watchguard support has anything to say with a specific question about that.
Sometimes Watchguard is really on the stick. Sometimes they aren't.

I will check my connection between my home (cable modem 384k-up/1900k-down)
and the main office (T1) for bandwdith and let you know what I get.

I would imagine that ISP hardware could be a limiting factor here, but I
could be wrong. I am curious to know myself, so I will search the archives
later tonight. In the mean time, someone from the group who is feeling a
little generous with their time may have some additional insight on this. A
few questions for the more knowledgeable out there:

Can ISP equipment have an impact on VPN throughput?
Could packet size impact throughput (500 byte versus 1500 byte)? This
question might be a good one for Watchguard as well.
Any other considerations? (nothing too lengthy, just a few quick answers
for further investigation later)

My thanks in advance your time with these questions.

Regards,

Justin

Hello All , I am having problems running over a " fast " satellite
connection. I do a speed test from the pc hooked to the satellite equipment
and the actual satellite connection is getting average 700k BUT as soon as a
slap on the ol watchgaurd vpn solution it and hook a computer to that the
speed drops to below a 56k I know this is not a cisco problem but watchgaurd
support is very lacking in my humble opinion and was hoping someone may have
had simular experience and could point me in right direction.

RE: Question on PIX 501 [7:38246]

2002-03-14 Thread Justin C

Mark,

My original question that I sent to the group somehow got lost. Ole was
kind enough to respond to a direct query regarding to some fun I am having
with installing a Pix (501) for the first time. My firewall background is
SonicWall and Watchguard, both are very simple in configuration and work
directly out of the box.

I was under the impression it was pretty much plug and play, so I decided to
test it by putting it between my PC and the rest of the LAN. However, after
the initial setup, the Pix passed no information through it. So I went to a
ping to start the troubleshooting. The curious (to me) issue was that from
the console or the PDM of the Pix I can ping network addresses on both sides
of the Pix. From the inside of the Pix, I cannot ping (or browse the web)
through the Pix. I cannot even ping the outside interface of the Pix from
the inside interface. The specific question is this ... is additional
configuration of the Pix required to permit access from the inside interface
to the outside interface and beyond?

To expand on the topic you and Ole are discussing, is the use of the
conduits (or access-lists) required for each and every type of service I
want to send from the inside to the outside? I have no problem researching
the commands to learn how it is done, I just want to make certain I am on
the right path.

Thanks,

Justin

Forgive me for not reading the book yet, as I've been quite busy too
... but, I have a question in regards to the config line you gave.

I've used the PDM so far to most of the configuration of my PIX, and it
creates access-lists rather than conduits. I know from others I've talked
with, that Cisco is moving from conduits to access-lists on the PIX
configs... this is the question

I configure to allow ICMP any(Outside) any(Inside) = Echo Reply
   ICMP any(Outside) any(Inside) = Time Exceeded
   ICMP any(Outside) any(Inside) = Unreachable

Does this do the same thing as what you were saying about "conduit permit
any any X"??

I think it does, but just want to make sure that I haven't opened up ICMP
completely with it being initiated from the outside.

Thanks!
Mark

Hi Justin,

When you ping, you use the ICMP protocol.

When A pings B, A sends ICMP echo-request (number 8) to B, and B sends ICMP
echo-reply (number 0) back to A.

The PIX does not allow ICMP traffic to come from the outside to the inside,
so to change that, you will need to open up for ICMP number 0 (echo-reply).

The command for that is:

conduit permit icmp any any 0

This is a good way to do it, because then you allow outside devices to reply
to your request, but they are not allowed to do a PING themself. If you want
PING to work both ways, simply use this command:

conduit permit icmp any any

Hth,

Ole

Ole,

I apologize in advance for yet another direct message.

DNS and Pix ... very wierd problem [7:40387]

2002-04-03 Thread Justin C

Group,

The Pix 501 is running the default NAT/PAT configuration. Through it, I can
check email using Outlook to talk to an Exchange Server, telnet and SSH to
devices, and browse the web provided I type in the ip address of the web
server. All requests for URL translation by a DNS server fail. The IP
configuration (addresses, gateways, DNS servers) are correct. The Pix is
direct to the cloud with only one PC behind it.

Using Debug Packet, I have confirmed that requests for DNS translations go
out and come back to the Pix (on the outside interface), but they do not
seem to make it back to the host that originated the request. The code is
6.1(1), and I have contacted TAC. With SSH, TAC has inspected the box and
cannot see a problem with the configuration. Nor can they explain why this
is occuring. Before sending it back to Cisco for a replacement, I thought I
would ask here to see if anyone has run across this.

There are no access-lists or conduit statements, but Cisco (the Pix
literature) and Cisco Press (Cisco Secure PIX Firewalls) say that they are
unnecessary for this very simple setup.

My thanks in advance for your time and input.

Regards,

Justin

Hi all.

What are some of the reasons why a person would choose a PIX solution
rather than a good router with the the right IOS for security?

From what I've read on Cisco's site, there does not seem to be the huge
gap between using a router as a firewall solution vs. using a PIX, as some
people make it sound.

One last thing...for the life of me, I can't find what "PIX" stands for!
Any help appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Hey gang,

Servers database became corrupt thus preventing messages from being sent
out. It has been fixed so if you do not see your posting, please resend. I
have shipped more memory to InFlow. Lon has agreed to install it for us.
This should help. So by the way, the server will be down for a little
while tomorrow :-)

The truth is we desperately need some better equipment. Currently we are
using a server I built for $500 dollars two years ago. I purchased a used
Dell Server but need to upgrade the RAID array and a few other things before
putting it online.

Take care,

Re: monitoring activity on watchgaurd firebox and soho [7:29499]

2001-12-18 Thread Justin C

Beth,

If you have a Firebox (not a SOHO), you can use the Host Watch feature of
the Watchguard Live Security System (LSS) to monitor all connections through
the Firebox live. It will display the source/destination IP address as well
as the destination port. Give the Firebox a minute to catch up on DNS
resolution, and it will resolve outside IP addresses to their names and
display them as well.

In addition to that, you can always log the activity to a Syslog server.
The Firebox/LSS system will allow you to log based on port activity as well.
This would allow you to log any activity going out the Firebox on ports
6699 (Napster) and 5050 (Yahoo Messenger). While you are including Yahoo
Messenger, you may want to look at Instant Messenger on port 5190 as well.

The next question you have to ask, is if there is activity, what if anything
will be done about it. That seems like a question best directed to your
companies management, so that it can be included in the corporate security
policy. Also, be mindful if these connections are going through any kind of
proxy server. You will want to understand the flow of this information
through your network so that you can present all available options to
management should they decide to curtail these programs.

Good luck,

Justin

Re: Anyone Higher? - FR Uptime [7:30920]

2002-01-04 Thread Justin C

Our main facility (Los Angeles) has a T1 FR with Pacbell (SBC). In the
seven months I have been running the the IT department, I have seen the T1
go down twice. Once was due to the re-routing of the phone lines that come
into the building. The building is 70 years old, and the lines used to come
in underground and now come in above ground. This was done in June, and I
can see how this would cause some grief. The second time was in November,
and SBC admitted the problem but gave no reasons. Service was unavailable
for one hour.

One of our remote sites (Cincinnati) had a 128K FR with Williams
Communications. This was installed before I was responsible for network.
Other than the initial startup problems (which I was told lasted about four
months), the line seemed to run flawlessly. The connection between the two
offices was run on the "private" SBC backbone ... I.E. - the Cincinnati
traffic to the Internet ran through our T1 line here LA, then back out the
same T1 line to the Internet. It was pretty ugly. Even worse than that,
the cost of the 128K FR from Williams was almost equal to the T1 line from
SBC. I switched this remote site to DSL from Cincinnati Bell, and connect
to the main site through a VPN. They get 560kB/s down and 350kB/s up. As
they have nothing that is mission critical and the company will never cough
out for VoIP, it is perfect for them. Over the course of six months, the
DSL service was unavailable once, and was restored within an hour. The
biggest delta is the price.

While I am on the subject, you may enjoy a good laugh. This company is
privately owned, and had a teletype until 1995. They only got rid of it
because Pacbell said it was no longer supported. Email was not implemented
until the Summer of 1999.

Justin

not seen any circuit being up for a long time without problems.

I believe that the longest I have seen a f.r. circuit being up is about a
little less the half a year, and one of our providers had an average of
downing one of our circuit every 1.5 months.

We have four circuits (three branch offices and one corp.) with a provider,
and all three branch offices has now been down once (at different dates) in
less than four months.

So, I am looking for a possitive story in the Frame Relay world. Who can
with a smile tell me about a frame relay connection that has been up for a
year or more - or would that be totally sci-fi???

I am getting SO frustrated and irritated that I have to deal with so
much trouble with "simple" WAN connections.

Thanks,

Ole

VPN3005 to VPN3002 Connection troubles [7:33255]

2002-01-25 Thread Justin Lofton

Hey gang,

I have a connection from a 3002 Hardware Client to a 3005 Concentrator. I
have configured many 3005s but this is my first 3002 connection. I set it
up as per CCOs configuration. The tunnel comes up but I can't see anything
on the 3005 network. Also PAT is configured on the 3002 and the internal
users can't see the Internet. Weird?!?

Can any one shine some light or have other CCO sample configs I don't know
about?

Thanks for your help!

if your ethernet0 is 10.0.0.1
and you make your serial0 have that unnumbered thingy
so both your serial and ethernet have 10.0.0.1 does that mean
the remote site your connecting to will have to have an address like
10.0.0.2 so its in the same network as your serial0 ?
