Hi all,
Iam having a 2511 router. IS it possible to configure other routers
from the access server, after configuring it,by connecting each async line
of the 2511 to each console port of the other routers? If so how?

I would appreciate if anyone can help.

Thanks in advance,

RE: a question about enable secret 5 abcd1234

What you are seeing is an MD5 hash of the clear text password. Unlike the
type "7" password there is no "easy" way to get the clear text password from
the hash. I believe (I may be wrong) that an MD5 hash can be brute forced
but it takes LOTS of processing power and time.

RE: Flame bait.

2000-11-14 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

My guess (probably not worth $0.02) not a whole lot more than someone
with a single discipline CCIE. The difference will be seen in this person's
ability to pick and choose their jobs.

Example: I bet that a company looking for a contractor to design a new
security infrastructure would look just as closely at a CCNP/CCDP/Security
as they would a CCIE without the security addendum. The "everything" CCIE
would get the best look of all in this case but I doubt that the $$$ would
be much different than what would be offered to either of the others were
they the best candidate for the job. The company budgets a certain number
of dollars for a given job and while they might budge a bit they are not
going to break the bank for someone who brings additional skills that do not
relate directly to the project.

Ladies and gents!

Just a thought. But I was curious as to the most vicious combination of
Cisco paper. It's no secret that a CCIE is by far the most sought after
cert on the planet. That being the case I'd be curious to know what kind of
position/compensation someone with CCIE/Design/RS/Security would have. If
in fact this person exists. Anyway, this is just a thought, feel free to

RE: Classes for CCNP

2000-11-10 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

I asked a similar question here a few months ago. I was told to take the
CIT course and I did. I am glad that I took this course as it really fit
well with what I have learned through experience. I have not taken the
other courses but in conversations with other CIT students who had I was
told that CIT really built on the core skills that they learned in the first
three classes. I have passed the Support (CIT) and Routing (BCSN)exams and
will take Remote Access next week. I can not speak about the Switching exam
as I have not started studying for it. Here is my take on this subject.

IF you are pretty green (not much hands on experience) I would recommend the
BSCN and BCMSN courses. They will cover in much greater detail the core
concepts that you will need for all four exams.

IF you work in a cisco routed and switched environment on a daily basis and
get lots of stick time on the equipment I would suggest taking whichever
course you feels addresses your weakest area and then the CIT course.

Good Luck,

Nathan

RE: 2511 Flash Memory Question

2000-10-24 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

Tom,
Try these steps, I think

Boot the router in boot mode.
Enable and enter configuration mode
Issue "no partition flash" (or "no flash partition" - I think that it was
the first one).
Write the config change to memory.
Reload the router (still in boot mode).

Once this has been done I think that you will see a single flash partition.

Greetings All

I have a 2511 with 4 MB of flash in it. I need to upgrade the IOS needs
7MB. I tried canabalizing another 2511 I had and adding it's 4MB to the 1st
routers 4MB making what I believed to be 8MB. But when I tried to tftp the
new image over I still got an error saying not enough memory, and yes I had
opted to erase the flash first. When I went and looked at the flash the
router saw it as two 4MB cards instead of 1 8MB.

What do I need to do to get the flash blended together to act as 1 8MB?

Question regarding IPSEC and PIX

2000-10-19 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

I have been looking for information regarding order of operations within a
PIX (5.1(2) code) when terminating an IPSEC tunnel and then filtering and
natting the untunneled packets. I have to assume that it goes something
like this:
Tunneled packet enters the outside interface and is unpacked
The new packet with its different properties is then handled as
mandated by the rule set
I have had little luck finding anything on CCO that spells this out in
detail and in a linear manner particularly the filtering and natting
processes. Any help will be appreciated greatly!
Thanks in advance,

RE: Erasing Flash

2000-10-10 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

The router is protecting itself by not allowing you to erase the IOS that it
it currently running. Change your config register to 0x2101 and reboot.
You will then be in boot mode (running the mini ios from the boot ROM) and
will be able to erase the flash.

RE: Advise....Should I purchase routers ? How do you study for an exam?

2000-10-09 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

I guess it depends on what you do in your work environment. If you work
with Cisco routers and switches during the course of your duties I would say
that you should be able to fill in the blanks through book study. If you do
not get to touch equipment at work you might want to buy a couple of older
(used) Cisco routers, possibly 2500 series. If you are familiar
(comfortable) with Ethernet look for routers with token ring interfaces and
get a token ring hub (you need to have some understanding of token ring
anyway, and the token ring stuff seems to be quite a bit cheaper given the
lighter demand). In my opinion a couple of cheap 250Xs with token ring and
BRI interfaces would work great for CCNP study (my guess is that you will
have to buy NT1s for the BRI interfaces). Just my .02.

HELP - OSPF question

2000-10-02 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

The ACRC Exam certification guide from Cisco press (ISBN 0735700753) states
on page 156 that a stub area "...will not accept external summary routes.
The LSAs blocked are types 3 and 4 (summary link LSAs that are generated by
the ABRs)." The paragraph then goes on to state that in a stub area the
only way that a router can see out of the AS is via a default route but that
the router can see all networks within the AS. It seems to me that a stub
area would accept the type 3 and 4 summary LSAs from the ABRs but that it
would not access the type 5 LSAs (external summary). Am I missing something
here?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Passed Support 2.0

2000-09-22 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

Thanks to the group for the study tips etc. I passed the Support 2.0 exam
yesterday (931). After taking some of the practice exams earlier in the
morning I thought that I had probably thrown my $100 away. Perhaps I got
lucky in the question selection but the level of detail required for this
exam was not as great as I had expected. Much of the exam is strait out of
the Cisco press books. I prepared by taking the CIT class from GN, reading
the exam cram book, and scanning the Cisco press book as a reference. In my
estimation I answered 50% of the questions from general knowledge, 30% from
portions of the Cisco press book that seemed to point to test questions, and
20% based on things that I learned in the class. Don't get me wrong, the
class was great and I learned a ton but the exam can not really simulate the
scenarios that are presented in the lab portion of the class and the test
can certainly be passed without taking the class. If I were to do this
again (and I am going to because I still need to pass foundation) I would
read the Cisco press book(s) twice or more and use other books for
clarification. Thanks again for the resource that this group/community
provides.

The Coriolis Exam Cram Books are out for the 640-50X tests. They do not
label them BSCN etc. The books are named Routing, Switching, Remote Access
and Support but they specify on the cover that they are written for the
640-50X exams. I have purchased them and am using them in conjunction with
the cisco press books for CCNP 1.0. I take the first test today so I have
no way to tell you how they compare to the exams as study guides.

The ISBNs for the books follow:
Routing 1576106330
Switching 1576106349
Remote Access 1576104370
Support 1576106810

The site http://www.bestbookbuys.com/ allows you to search multiple book
store sites for pricing etc. You provide the name isbn etc and it provides
a list of stores sorted by price.

RE: CCIE Questions...

2000-09-19 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

John,
Perhaps you have not grasped the idea that systematic violation of the NDAs
devalues the certs that we are all (yourself included - I assume) working to
earn. I for one, do not want the pool of CCNPs and CCIEs diluted by those
who are incapable of passing the exams without memorizing the answers to a
few specific questions. A significant part of the value of these certs
comes from the perception (justified or not) that more than memorization is
required to attain them.
Regards,

Nathan Miller

More on FECNs and BECNs

2000-09-18 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

I have received conflicting answers to this question from a number of
sources to include a Cisco Certified Instructor in a CIT course, so I am
posting the question here with hope that someone "out there" can clear this
up. I have been told that when a frame enters a router with the BECN or
FECN bit high is this an indicator that there is congestion on a port on a
frame switch that the frame has traversed (I don't question this). The
piece of the instructor's explanation that I have a problem with is that the
only frames that get the bit flipped are those that are part of a PVC that
is running outside its CIR. He stated that the traffic moving through the
same congested port on other PVCs (those running under CIR) will not be
tagged even though they are moving through a congested port. I thought that
every frame traversing the congested port gets the FECN or BECN bit flipped
(depending on direction). I have found support for this in a couple of
books, but I have seen nothing that says definitively that ALL frames
through the congested port get tagged.
Many thanks in advance!

Nathan Miller

RE: Decreasing # of CCIE's Worlwide

2000-09-08 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

I have heard that Cisco significantly discounts the proice of support
contracts to companies with current CCIEs. If this is true it is one reason
why keeping the cert current increases marketability.

Well, if it costs $1,000 to take the lab again, which involves hours and
hours of studying, and you go to a client and say, I'm CCIE and I let
my certifications lapse, but here's what I've been doing for the past X
number of years

Do you really need those 4 letters anymore with most companies with that
level of experience? I mean, if it is out of date, it hasn't really been
long enough to be REALLY out of date...

By definition a CCIE is the best when it comes to real world experience.

How hard is the CCIE Written

2000-09-07 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

I have heard that the CCIE written exam (only the written - not the lab) is
not significantly more difficult than the sum of the four CCNP exams and
that the bulk of the information needed to succeed in one is common to the
other. The Cisco web site seems to confirm this. If there are CCIEs or
CCIE candidates out there who completed CCNP first I would greatly
appreciate your thoughts on this.

Many Thanks,

Nathan

quick question - We're setting up a temp. ISDN connection and the powers
that be want a PERMANENT (not DDR) connection on a Cisco 2500 (ios 11.2)

I've got a BRI and Dialer setup (which also aren't working, but that's
another story) - is there a default - like Dialer idle-timeout 0 that will
keep an ISDN connection up in a permanent state for a few weeks?

I know it doesn't make sense, but they're paying for it, so no skin off my
nose.
