When are CCIP Course Books Coming out? [7:74073]

2003-08-17 Thread Mwalie W
Hello Members,

Just asking whether anyone out there knows when course books for Cisco's
CCIP certification are coming out, especially for BGP and QoS.

I hope to get a BGP one as a reference, because the course (and hence the
course book) covers more than what is available in Sam's Internet Routing
Architectures.

Thanks.

Hello,

One may also be aware that it is a lot easier to now fail this exam, because
the passing score is 776. With the exam that broad, one has to actually be
well prepared for this one:-)

Plus, there is plenty of BGP, IS-IS and OSPF.

New CIT - 642-831 [7:73591]

2003-08-14 Thread Mwalie W
Hello All,

The outline for the new CIT course is as follows:
http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/front.x/wwtraining/CELC/index.cgi?action=CourseDescCOURSE_ID=2815

Module 1 - Establishing a Baseline

Module 2 - Determining an effective troubleshooting strategy

Module 3 - Resolving Problems at the Physical and Data Link layers

Module 4 - Resolving Problems at the Network Layer

Module 5 - Resolving Problems at the Transport and Application Layers

What I would like to ask is whether one can tackle this exam well just
basing on the the old materials (CIT 640-606).

Thanks!

RE: BGP and QOS Beta exams [7:73599]

2003-08-08 Thread Mwalie W
Peter,

Yes, you will have to begin chasing VUE and Cisco.

For example, I did BGP Beta on May 30th 2003 and I got a letter about my
passing from Prometric around 20th June 2003. After a few days, it also
appeared in my Tracking System.

The same with BSCI Beta 643-801.

It could have something to do with your postal address.

So, check with VUE, then they should guide concerning how to approach Cisco
... because my experience shows that Cisco asks for a copy of the result of
a given exam, and this comes from Prometric/VUE.

Good Luck! You must be a very patient person:-) And this is also the reason
I do not like Beta exams now.

2003-08-08 Thread Mwalie W
Hello,

Knowledgenet courses are okay, but I feel they are by far expensive. You can
use the money to get equipment.

The material at knowledgenet (for the Cisco courses like BSCI) is exactly
what is in the Cisco course book that costs $60.00. The reason I like
knowledgenet is that being interactive, I can study even when tired at
night, just when reading a book is nearly impossible.

I think I have come to like knowledgenet; fortunately, I have not been
paying for the courses.

Re: Cisco BGP Exam [7:73516]

2003-08-06 Thread Mwalie W
Hello,

I did BGP beta and I found that Internet Routing Architectures does not
cover everything required on the exam, especially if one does not have
hands-on experience. This is the reason I suffered, despite passing the exam
(to my surprise).

You can also supplement with Cisco ISP Essentials (Cisco Press) as well as
Cisco's website. And, of course, John Stewart's book as mentioned. Internet
Routing Architectures was the main book, but I also found it difficult in
some cases. Cisco ISP Essentials is very nice, and make sure you absorb it
completely.

What I can say is this: If you absorb completely Internet Routing
Architectures and Cisco ISP Essentials and then make sure that you get
right every question that that you are able to get right, you will pass the
exam.

I think there is no single best book for this exam.

Good Luck

Dear Cisco Nuts,

Okay, they will ask some questions on desktop networking: broadcasts and
that kind of stuff. I think you have to read that chapter in the CID book

Otherwise, you should be fine with Cisco Internetwork Design (CID) course
book: know it inside out because everything is there, and it can confuse if
not covered thoroughly.

I did it twice, but should have done it once actually.

Hi Maia,

If you must do one quickly, start with Remote Access. With your CCNA, you
can do the Remote Access exam without much difficulty (the old version). Use
Cisco Press...Cisco Remote Access Exam Certification Guide. It should take
you about 1 month to get it doneyou can even prepare for the old
Switching exam should you like.

The new exams seem to be much broader in terms of course content, and Cisco
Press is the way to go.

The plan will continue to evolve; it is fun studying to become CCNP (I
think) and with your attitude, you will enjoy it.

RE: Cisco Training [7:71811]

2003-07-02 Thread Mwalie W
Hi,

You will succeed through self-study; I am now a CCDP through self-study and
it has taken me some time :)

I would say that those 5-day courses are far too expensive, especially now
that you have the equipment.

Unless you are in hurry to get the CCNP; if you are not, just study one
chapter per day. This is possible (one chapter per day), though for routing
(BSCI), it may take longer if you are completely new to those routing
protocols.

Honestly, there is no need to spend all the money on those 5-day courses,
according to me. I do not have any experience with networking and I have
steadily studied until I am now a CCDP, sucessfully doing 6 exams, though I
had to do Cisco Internetwork Design (CID 640-025) twice.

Also, when you buy your own materials, they remain with you after the tests.
Okay, self-study may be the hard way to acquire the knowledge, but by the
time you are ready for a test, you really feel you have got the
knowledgethis is the important thing to me.

Good Luck.

What I can say is that you be patient a littleI do not know how it is in

You have the right attitude towards the job market, and this is evident
because apart from your degree program, you have also taken the

Okay, whereas these certification programs may not give one experience, they
bring you much closer to understanding the kind of job you may have to be

Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 ISPs [7:71508]

Hi All,

This should be a simple one.

I have heard that we have Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 ISPs.I do assume we only
have Tier 1 and Tier 2 in the US, Europe and Asia (Japan, China).

In a third world country, can we have Tier 1 and Tier 2? Or we just have
Tier 3 ISPs which connect to Tier 1 and Tier 2 in the USA, etc?

Okay, I ask this question because I was reading an article in Kenya about a
local ISP there called UUNET-Kenya (www.uunet.co.ke) and they are saying
that they are a Tier 1 ISP. I did not think that that Kenyan ISP is Tier 1,
but I do know that its parent company (Worldcom?) is Tier 1.

Was it just marketing to the locals there??

Thanks for your answers

RE: Subinterfaces [7:71421]

2003-06-26 Thread Mwalie W
Hi,

I think your questions are quite in order and there is no reason to feel
that you are dragging it on

What is the purpose of encapsulation (data-link layer)? To enable
transportation of upper-layer data on the physical medium, right?

It may help in this particular case to look at, for example, the fields that
comprise the Frame Relay frameFlags, Address, data, FCS, Flags.

The Address field contains the DLCI, representing the connection between a
DTE and the Switchthis is a layer 2 address (DLCI)

So, the encapsulation should actually be on the physical interface, not the
software (sub)interface.

May be:)

Now, I can not see this test in my database (Certifications Tracking System).

Okay, from the report, the results in all the sections shows that it is

Hi,

Yes. I registered with Prometric and, as usual, I wrote my Cisco ID was on
the registration form.

Thanks.

Passed BGP Beta and Switching 640-604 [7:71115]

2003-06-23 Thread Mwalie W
Hi All,

Today, I have double joy :)

I today did Switching (640-604) well, getting 987/1000 to complete my quest
for CCDP.

Then when I reached my apartment, there was a letter from Cisco (well, from
Prometric) that I had passed BGP Beta with 827/1000, passing score 755. BGP
was such a challenging exam (to me).

Now, I will begin studying MPLS and QoS to become a CCIP.

I am indebted to a few members here, especially Priscilla Oppenehimer,
Howard Berkowitz, Cisco Nuts, Grant and many many others.

Later, I will ask for advice regarding what to do to become a network
consultant :)

2003-06-23 Thread Mwalie W
Grant,

Thanks for your suggestion, though I am not sure what the 350-001 exam is
all about - CCIE written?

Honestly, I doubt whether that is my goal.I will not be able to get the
necessary equipment to play with.

Also, in my country, I will be overqualified :)

That is correct: in some countries, being a CCIE means being overqualified.

In any case, I am actually already overqualified when it comes to the
company employment situation in my country; I can only work as a consultant
and/or Instructor :).

Thanks.

This is very real for some companies and/or jobs. So, those guys have a

Grant,

You are quite right - I think there is a mistake there; after all, the
answer is just written by someone, and why can it not be wrong?

See you soon - this is my last preparation day and I will e-mail you after
to tell you how it went :)

Hi Grant,

Thanks.

That is very useful because I was really getting mixed - just the state of
mind I should not be in as I prepare for BCMSN 640-604 next week.

That is very useful, believe me.

Cheers!

Hi Grant,

Congrats!

Once you have BSCI behind you as well as BCMSN (as you seem to), then Remote
Access will be easy (I think).

Congrats!

RE: BSCI 640-901 or 643-801??? [7:70658]

2003-06-15 Thread Mwalie W
Hi,

I took 643-801 recently and there are minor additions - like IPV6, RIPv2,
NAT and such like things. I also took 640-603 (BSCN) in September last year.

I would say: take 640-901 - unless you want to save some $75.00 for taking
the Beta.

Reason: you will know immediately the result and move on, rather than
waiting 8 to 12 weeks for the Beta result.

Hope this helps.

RE: BSCI 640-901 or 643-801??? [7:70658]

2003-06-15 Thread Mwalie W
Hi,

The new aspects of the exam (like IPv6, RIPv2, NAT, etc) seemed basic -
probably because I was well prepared.

The only reason you may want to do 640-901 has to do with waiting for more
than 8 weeks; should one fail, it means one has to re-study again. That does
not sound so good for me, considering that the other exam is of the same
level and you know the result and plan your new move there and then.

Good Luck; I guess in both exams, you have to know IS-IS, OSPF, BGP very
well - including how to configure them :)

Re: Cisco Beta exams [7:70659]

2003-06-15 Thread Mwalie W
Hi,

I agree.

I think Beta exams are just for testing errors in the exams - from the
comments we make. Like I had a lot of trouble with BGP Beta - because the
drag and drop mechanism was not good; you drag, but as you drop, it comes
out - I despised that aspect because I was meeting it very frequently.

Anyway, do the real exam when it is out.

TRUNKING MODES [7:70700]

2003-06-15 Thread Mwalie W
Hi All,

Here is a question, please.

Accidentally two switches are connected together that are in different
management domains. If both sides of the link have their trunking states set
to on, what will the link do?

I thought there will be no trunking, but the answer says they will trunk -
even with different management domains?

Thanks.

RE: BGP Help! [7:70618]

2003-06-13 Thread Mwalie W
Hi,

I have come across that Cisco statement before: I guess it means that one AS
does not influence the routing policies of another AS :)

In other words (hoping I am right), AS1 implements its own internal routing
policy, as will AS2 and AS1 will not dictate to AS2 how AS2 should route
AS1's traffic through AS2.

Honestly, I wish I could get clearer explanation from the members :)

Cisco's BGP Course is Okay [7:70038]

2003-06-03 Thread Mwalie W
Hi All,

This is just a comment arising after I read a paper in the current IEEE
Communications Magazine.

I was a little surprised. The paper is, of course, a refereed paper and was
written by three guys, one of them a PhD.

I was surprised because I could write the same paper just from the knowledge
I gained on BGP through self-study. I understood the paper in its entirety
without any struggle at all.

So, my main point is that we can get good knowledge through Cisco
Certifications, knowledge which can even help us attend conferences and
present very decent papers.

Good Luck.

Mwalie

BGP Beta Exam - Thorough! [7:69644]

2003-05-28 Thread Mwalie W
Hi All,

Today, I did BGP Beta towards CCIP.

A very thorough exam, with some bugs and grammatical mistakes here and there.

It is so thorough and long that if you are not well prepared, you will pass
with difficulty. No time to thinkeven a faster reader like me had
problems.

The first question took me about 10 minutes (should take about 1.5 minutes).
From then on, I knew that I was always going to struggle.

It is a nice exam to prepare for, full of diagrams and configurations! We
need such kind of exams for certifying competent professionals.

If I do not pass, I will gladly have the same experience again. Very nice
intellectual challenge, I thought!

To Cisco Nuts, Thanks for the hints!! I appreciate that so much.

Good Luck!
