ATM switch configuration. [7:75137]

2003-09-10 Thread Rajesh Kumar
Hi all,

Can somebody point me to the location where I can copy paste the base
ATM switch configuration to be used in the labs like Ipexpert? Since I
am not as familiar as FR switch, all I need is to have very basic
connectivity from ATM router having 1 or 2 PVCs.

Thanks,
Rajesh

Can router configured as host in IPv6 net? [7:73110]

2003-07-28 Thread Rajesh Kumar
Hello all,

Is it possible to configure a Cisco router as just a host in IPv6
network. Would that be equivalent having a Windows PC running IPv6
stack in the network coexisting with other routers?

Thanks,
Rajesh

If a router has its interfaces in Area 1 and Area 2 and no Area 0, is it

OSPF summarisation when to use? [7:72443]

2003-07-16 Thread Rajesh Kumar
Hello everybody,

Assume there is no expilicit question to summarise a particular subnet,
is it really necessary to include "area range" or "summary-address"
command in specific routers? In the practice labs we see the final goal
is to see all networks in all the routers. Even without the
summarisation commands I am able to see the routes in the routing
tables, but the solutions for the lab includes them as well.

Can somebody point me to any guidelines of when to use. Also if there
is a need to use, do we need to include "area range" command in all the
ABR's in the network?

I would appreciate any help in regard to this.

Thanks,
rajesh

Redis. classful to classless. [7:66905]

2003-04-04 Thread Rajesh Kumar
Hi all,

The scenario is this : A router with one of the interface running OSPF
and other interface running IGRP.

When redistributing, assuming OSPF carries networks for elsewhere a
combination of /24, /26 and /28 networks. When we want to redistribute
/26 and /28 networks to IGRP with a condition ( no static routes or
default routing is allowed ), what is another alternative to get these
routes into IGRP?

Thanks,
Rajesh

Hidden issues. [7:66565]

2003-03-31 Thread Rajesh Kumar
Hi all,

I am facing a situation like this :

1. 2 routers connected back to back via serial connections and
4 loopbacks configured on both of them. IGRP is running as IGP
protocol. Soon after I configure BGP on them and advertising the
loopback networks, I could see the BGP routes in the routing table of R1
for a while and they disappear after sometime. But if the IGP is chosen
to be a classless protocol like OSPF/ EIGRP then everything seems to be
OK.

Is there anything that needs to be taken care of under this
circumstances?

Thanks,
Rajesh

Routes across ISIS areas. [7:61433]

2003-01-20 Thread Rajesh Kumar
Hi all,

I have a scenario like this :

Area 1 Area 2

R1 R2

s2/0.1 s2/0.1

Both are point to point networks.

The configuration for R1 is

int s2/0.1 point-to-point
ip router isis

router isis
net 47.0001.0002.0003.0004.00

and for R2 is

int s2/0.1 point-to-point
ip router isis

router isis
net 47.0002.0001.0003.0004.00

=

The problem is that I am not able to see R1's routes in R2.

R1 has a couple of OSPF routes coming in from other routers - but never
gets passed on to R2.

Any experts comments?

Thanks,
Rajesh

Re: OSPF DEMAND-CIRCUIT, not stopping the link UPDOWN [7:60719]

2003-01-09 Thread Rajesh Kumar
I just found on this URL on the cisco's web site and as many of us suggested
the
following could be one of the reasons :

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/104/dcprob.html

On the bri interfaces

1. Encapsulation should be ppp and " no peer neighbor-route" should be
configured.
2. " ip ospf network point-point "or multipoint should be configured

and several more.

Rajesh

Virtual link question. [7:60452]

2003-01-06 Thread Rajesh Kumar
Hi all,

Basically, this question stems from Lab 1 of ccbootcamp.

1. R3 and R4 needs virtual link configured between them for R4 routes to
be seen in all the other routers.

I go to R3 and say " area 3 virtual-link " and in R4 " area 3
virtual-link 10.34.1.1" . For the virtual links to come up, atleast
R3 should be able to ping the lo1 of R4. But R4's routes ( including
the loopbacks ) will be propagated only when the OSPF's virtual link is
up and running.

Also in the lab, we are not supposed to have static routes unless
otherwise stated. - How is it possible to make the R4's routes appear in
R3. Any workaround?

Thanks,
Rajesh

Q on Lab2 ccbootcamp. [7:60245]

2003-01-03 Thread Rajesh Kumar
Hello everybody.

I am working on Lab 2 of ccbootcamp and am confused with the following.
Can somebody clarify on that please?

Item 2b says Configure R1's ethernet in OSPF area 1. .

Item 2i says Configure the router R1 with EIGRP and redistribute with
OSPF ( Here I thought I can only configure R1's s0.1 for EIGRP
and leave the Ethernet and S0.2 to OSPF. ).

Item 2j says Configure the router R1 so that it only listens to EIGRP
updates on Ethernet 0 and interface serial 0.2.

The network diagram points that Ethernet 0 of R1 is in Area 1 and EIGRP
domain surrounds it.

Where I am going wrong?

Thanks,
rajesh

Leaky bucket concept. [7:59841]

Hi all,

I am trying to understand the "leaky bucket concept" in Qos for 3550
platform. For some reason, it confuses me a lot. Can somebody point me
to an URL which explains in simpler terms?

Thanks,

Q in RIP. [7:57513]

2002-11-15 Thread Rajesh Kumar
Hi all,

In the practice labs at the end of the book of CCIE prac studies by Karl
Solie, I see a very common mention like the one below ( mostly I have
seen under RIP routing, sometimes it also comes in other Routing
protocol sections as well )

" Make sure that no other routes are redistributed into the backbone."
OR " Don not allow any routes from the lab network to be advertised onto
Backbone 1"

To be more specific - the lab is Darth Reid Section V under item # 4.

What exactly could be the configuration under this situations.

The only thing that I could think of is NOT to include "redistribute
ospf 1 " under RIP process. Is that all it needs or am I missing
something else?

Thanks,
Rajesh

Re: odd & even # IPs on an ACL [7:56551]

2002-10-30 Thread Rajesh Kumar
Take ex :

192.168.0.0/24 to 192.168.10.0/24 are the networks.

For filtering odd networks here is what the ACL will look like

192.168.1.0 and the WCM will be 0.0.254.255

For filtering even networks it will be 192.168.0.0 , WCM - 0.0.254.255.

Means that for ODD networks last bit of the third octet will always be 1

For the EVEN networks the last bit of the third octet will always be 0. So
you care
only that bit in the WCM.

PS : The chapter for ACL in CCIE Practical Studies by Karl Solie has an
example of this
and a good explanation.

Hope this helps.

Rajesh

Subinterface config. in CAT3550. [7:56174]

2002-10-23 Thread Rajesh Kumar
Hi all,

I am trying to configure a router on a stick configuration - with 26xx
series router's e0/0 port connected to fa0/1 port of CAT3550.

Router's E0 port is configured like this

int e0/1
no shu
no ip address

int e0/1.1
encap isl 20
ip address 192.168.20.1 255.255.255.0

int e0/1.2
encap isl 40
ip address 192.168.40.1 255.255.255.0

When I try to do the same thing on CAT 3550's fa0/1 port, I get an error
message like this :

" Configuring IP routing on LAN subinterface is only allowed if that
subinterface is configured as a part of IEEE 802.10 or dot1q or ISL
VLAN. "

But nowhere I find the command "encap isl " to insert this in
the subinterfaces.

Does anyone has anythoughts on this and how to overcome this?

Thanks,
Rajesh

Redistribution metrics. [7:55297]

2002-10-10 Thread Rajesh Kumar

Hi all,

Everytime I get confused with this metrics while redistribution :

The scenario is this :

1. Redist from OSPF to EIGRP.

router eigrp 1
redis ospf 1
default-metric 1544 100 255 1 1500

router ospf 1
redis eigrp 1 subnets
default-metric 25

What difference does it make when I say "default-metric 1 100 255 1
1550" instead of the above.

Does the metrics points to the destination interface ( metrics ) where
it is redistributed into OR it points where the routes are originated
from ( ethernet interface or serial int )?

Thanks,
Rajesh

Hi all,

I read somewhere about the following questions in OSPF and couldn't get

:

1. Whats is the max. inter area summarization that can be done in a

2 Using summarisation techniques how will you advertise the loopback
interfaces with its natural mask without changing the network type?

New CCIE written exam. [7:53005]

2002-09-10 Thread Rajesh Kumar

Hi all,

Took the new version of CCIE written exam. The exam consists of 180 min
and 150 questions. The passing score is 105. But my score was only 67.
:-(

Lot of questions in IS-IS, Mcast and QoS. Lot of scenario based
questions as well. Most of them were "choose the best answer" only a
few were "multiple choice questions" and they specify how many are the
best answers.

2 questions were on PVLANs, None in WLAN, couple of them in TR, Enet and
FDDI stuff.

Before taking the test, there is a small survey to be taken online.
One of the questions in the survey is you need to select the
technologies that you have worked on. I suspect most of the questions
are based on the technology that you selected. Time shouldn't be a
problem because you have more than a minute for a question You still
can revisit marked questions at the end of the test.

All the best for everybody who is right now preparing for this and if
you need more specifics about the exam, email me - I will try to answer
to the best I can that I have from my memory.

Thanks,
rajesh

2nd try : OSPF Q in CCIE prac. studies pg 786 [7:51369]

2002-08-14 Thread Rajesh Kumar

Hi all,

I was trying to setup this network in fig 12-9. I got stuck in one
particular route. I am not able to view the route 172.16.10.0/24 on the

router "peter" which is running RIP and got to see this route as
redistributed one.

The question is in which router do I need to give the "area range "
command in order to see this route appear on router "peter".

I tried several options of giving in the router "john" which is ABR -as
this "area 10 range 172.16.10.0 255.255.255.0", but this summarised
route is not advertised back to the same area for the ASBR router ( mark

) to redistribute to RIP.

Any workaround to overcome this?

PS : Sample output of "sh ip route" for router peter shows this route,
but my setup doesn't = So I am trying to get some idea of how to make
available this route.

Thanks,
Rajesh

As far as the CLI is concerned you DO NOT need to worry about that.
Absolutely there is

Bandwidth command!! [7:44055]

2002-05-13 Thread Rajesh Kumar

Hi all,

CCIE Practical studies - Vol I book - EIGRP chapter says that the
bandwidth command used in serial interfaces should be set to a value
equal to the remote port speed to which the serial interface is
connected to.

For ex :

RTR 1 -- RTR 2

1.544 Mbps64 Mbps

int
s0int s0
bandwidth 64
bandwidth 1544

My question is - Is it not going to affect the other routing protocols
like OSPF where we set the bandwidth decides the cost of the outgoing
interfaces.

Can somebody shed some light on this please?

Thanks,
Rajesh

2. Item 4 :Create an additional loopback on R2 with ip address
172.0.0.1/16 ( of course this was done !!! ) R1 and R1 should view this
new network as the gateway of last resort. Do not add any config.
statements in R1 or R4 to complete this step.

Ch 7 pg 518 in ccie practical studies - Karl [7:36393]

I am quoting here the second paragraph on Pg 518 of CCIE practical

"Because link-state protocols rely on the use of periodic hellos to

Having said link-state protocols and giving examples of distance vector

Re: Halabi's Internet Routing Architecture book [7:35165]

2002-02-12 Thread Rajesh Kumar

In addition to that, I would strongly recommend the use of this book :

1. BGP4 Config. guide and command reference book - William Parkhurst.

This book goes to each and every command of the BGP and examples are given
for better
understanding of the Cisco's CLI. Both of the books go hand in hand. You
can read
Hallabi's book first, then switch modes to read some commands then go back
to Hallabi
for advanced configurations. As a user of both, I recommend all people who
are going in
for CCIE lab to touch so very easily you can remember the commands and
little you face
problems in the lab.

Thanks
Rajesh

Configure R7 and R8 such that if any new
routers were added to the 150.50.4.0 subnet they could peer to R7 or R8
in AS200

Configure R7 and R8 as peers - This is done
too

I just wanted to clarify on the highlighted step. Can somebody explain

Difference in Distribute-list and Route-map in BGP. [7:34745]

2002-02-07 Thread Rajesh Kumar

Hi all,

When I was going thru the topics in BGP - distribute-list and
route-map, I was trying to find out the differences between the two and
where each of these commands would really be useful.

The following is the only difference that I could think of.

=
Distribute-lists can be used to filter incoming/outgoing route updates.

Route-maps can be used to filter incoming/outgoing route updates and
also modify BGP attributes.

==

I would like to hear your suggestions, if I am missing anything beyond
that.

Ipexpert lab 4 question. [7:32555]

2002-01-18 Thread Rajesh Kumar

Hi all,

I was going thru the Lab 4 of IPEXPERT notes - IGRP/EIGRP.

I couldn't follow the reason why on Router 4's serial interface "ip
split-horizon" is given.

I understand that on FR cloud "split-horizon" is disabled by default on
FR physical interfaces and enabled on FR sub interfaces. If thats the
case, why shouldn't we enable it on Routers R5 and R6 which are also on
FR cloud and also having physical interfaces.

One thing for sure, is if I remove this "ip split-horizon" config from
R4, I see the network 150.50.24.0 flapping - The output of "sh ip route"
in R2 and R4 says connected/derived from IGRP and after a while it says
"possibly down" network. So much so, if you configure ip split-horizon
back in R4 - these messages go back.

Would appreciate if somebody could share their piece of thoughts.

Thanks
Rajesh

Advertising loopback interfaces via IGRP. [7:32498]

2002-01-18 Thread Rajesh Kumar

Hi all,

The scenario is this :

R2R3---R4

R3 is a FR switch between 2 DTE devices R2 and R4.

R4 is having a loopback interface, ethernet interface and a serial
interface. I am running IGRP 2 on R4 on loopback and serial
interfaces. I have not included the ethernet interface in the config.

Assume, I have assigned the IP for the loopback as 200.0.0.4/32

The config is this :

router igrp 2
net 150.50.0.0
net 200.0.0.0
redis connected
default-metric 64 1000 255 1 1500

When I issued "sh ip route" in R4 : sometimes the loopback interface is
advertised as IGRP route properly and sometimes it shows "possibly down"
network.

I couldn't seem to get the timings of when it was up and when it is
going down.

Any insights in this please?

Thanks

You might also need / go thru the book - BGP configurtion and command
reference -
William Parkhurst. The book covers almost all the commands under BGP and
simple example
for all of those.

I think you should opt for Sniffer software from Network Associates.

The software supports Windows platforms and should be ideal for your

Re: BGP Extended Access-list [7:31212]

2002-01-07 Thread Rajesh Kumar

The BGP extended ACL works differently from the regular extended ACL. Here
is how it
goes.

In the access list that you gave as an example :

access-list 101 permit ip 10.6.144.48 0.0.0.8 255.255.255.240 0.0.0.8

a .10.6.144.48 is the source network
b. 0.0.0.8 is the wild card mask asssociated with the source network.
c. 255.255.255.240 is the subnet mask that is used for the network
10.6.144.48
d. 0.0.0.8 is the wild card mask just for the subnet mask 255.255.255.240

Note : Both meanings of c and d will be different for the regular ACLs.

Hope this helps.

The application for this type of ACL is to permit/deny all but one type of
subnet while
still denying/permitting other subnets in the entire class.

VLANs configured as PVLANs are done only when the VTP mode is transparent.
So the VTP
messages aren't carried or passed to the adjacent switch. You will have to
configure in
all the switches. By the way, which platform you are using and which
version of
software?

Books similar to BGP4 config guide frm Parkhurst. [7:26906]

2001-11-20 Thread Rajesh Kumar

Hi all,

I have been going thru the book - Cisco BGP 4 - command and
configuration handbook from William Parkhurst and personally feel that
book is very good - explaining each and every command options and
examples for that.

It is useful for me to practice each and every command for my exam. At
the same time, I am also thinking whether is there any other book
similar to this for other protocols like OSPF, EIGRP, IGRP/RIP. Of
course I wonder, why Parkhurst himself hasn't written similar books and
just only for BGP.

Have anybody come across a similar guide for these other protocols as
well.

Thanks for your time.

Re: Boot Reg [7:23561]

2001-10-19 Thread Rajesh Kumar

I probably see the potential cause would be the baud rate. ( just because
you see some
garbled messages )

Cisco routers by default has 2 bits allocated for baud rate. 2 bits make 4
combinations
viz, 1200, 4800, 9600 and 2400. Try these settings one by one on the
Hyperterm session
that you had connected the system and try. Let me know the outcome.

OSPF authentication question. [7:18813]

2001-09-06 Thread Rajesh Kumar

Hi all,

The scenario is this :

Three router pod in a triangular fashion connected via ethernet ports to
a switch in a common vlan.

router a
| e0
|
   router b -switch---router c
e0fa0/0

OSPF is running between ethernet interfaces in area 0. Normal OSPF
works fine and each router has entries about the other in
"sh ip ospf neighbor" output.

I was trying authentication commands. I started enabling authentication
in area 0 under router ospf config " area 0 auth mess-dig"
and in the interface e0 I gave " ip ospf mess-digest-key 1 md5 7 abc"

I gave the above commands in router b and router a - it was working
fine. they could exchange the OSPF information. When I gave the same
thing in router c - router c couldn't be seen in other routers.

I tried several times but in vain. The only difference between the
routers is router c has fastethernet and models are :

1. router b 4500
2. router a 2514
3 router c 2600

On enabling the command : debug ip ospf events on router c, I observed
Mismatch authentication keys but I used the same authentication key ,
number and the password.

Any insights would be highly appreciated.

thanks

Re: URGENT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [7:8061]

2001-06-11 Thread Rajesh Kumar

You can start the troubleshooting from the Physical layer onwards. Ensure
you use the
correct cables - crossover cable instead of back to back.
Then if that if fine, then check the datalink connections.
Then go higher up the stack, to see if you need to add anything in the
configuration.
If you are using T1 card and u want to use only 56k out of it, you might be
in need of
this configuration :

config t
controller T1 0/0
channel-group 0 timeslots 1
no shut

something like that.
let us know the outcome.

WIC - 2 A/S module for 3640 series router ! [7:5583]

2001-05-23 Thread Rajesh Kumar

Hi all,

I have a 3640 router and Ethernet module loaded in the system. The
router recognises as E0/0 and E0/1.

when I try to plug in my WIC - 2 A/S card, the system is not recognizing
the serial card. The same card is working in 26xx router. I went into
cisco site and found that the cards are interchangeable. The IOS
version is 12.0 in 3640 router.

Did anybody faced this problem earlier. Any insight?

Thanks
Rajesh
