PPTP and IPSEC support [7:74428]

2003-08-27 Thread James Gosnold
Dear all,

I'm looking for a DSL router for a remote office (827 or 837?) that will
support IPSEC and PPTP VPN's.

At Head office I have a Microsoft ISA Server which is easier to setup with
PPTP connections, however I would like to have a go at setting up an IPSEC
infrastructure so ideally a router that supported both would be a good one
to purchase.

I've found some other manufacturer's that offer this such as Netopia and
Zyxel but I would like a Cisco box if possible.

The software advisor isn't really helping me when searching for PPTP as a
feature, and I *think* I need the router to support PPTP in gateway mode for
a LAN to LAN VPN but that terminology doesn't seem to sit that well on the
Cisco site.

Any advice gratefully received, thanks, James.

PIX VPN Client Configuration - At my wit's end! [7:74363]

2003-08-26 Thread James Willard
Hi all,

Thanks in advance for reading this message. I am completely boggled on an
issue here that I have literally been trying to troubleshoot for some 12
hours now.

I'm trying to configure a PIX 515E for Cisco VPN Client connectivity.

Here are the relevant parts of my config:

:PIX Version 6.3(1)

Let's say the outside interface is 100.100.100.28. These are the networks:

100.100.100.28 255.255.255.240(outside)
192.168.1.0255.255.255.0 (inside)

10.0.1.0 255.255.255.0 (dmz)

I can connect with the client just fine, but neither end can ping the other.
Say the client machine gets the IP 192.168.2.100 from the pool, it cannot
ping anything in 192.168.1.x. Conversely, nothing in 192.168.1.x can ping
192.168.2.100. The VPN Client side shows packets being encrypted but none
decrypted. The IPSec SA on the PIX shows packets being encrypted and none
decrypted.

Also worth noting is that the VPN client status shows Transparent
Tunneling: Inactive on the status page while connecting, even though isakmp
nat-traversal is enabled. An ethereal capture shows the client sending ESP
packets to the PIX but none are coming back.

Please, if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them. This has been
driving me crazy!

Thanks,

James Willard

RE: Slightly OT: Corrupted Emails on POP Server [7:72397]

2003-07-16 Thread James Gosnold
John, I too would be interested to hear the thoughts of anyone knowledgable
on this. I just opened up your message after deleting the offending mail
from our ISP's POP server too!

One thing you can do to check out the offending mail in future is use a
utility to pull down the mail called 'pullmail'.

You can download it from these people:

http://www.swsoft.co.uk/index.asp?page=freesoftware

It runs a batch script so what you can do is start up a command prompt and
run the script, it then shows the process mail by mail so you can see where
it is bombing out and delete that mail only.

Seems to relate quite often to the senders address, not sure why but it does.

James.

Subject: We (Cisco mailing list) are moving ... [7:72060]

Hey Everyone,

We will be moving the mailing list function to a new server. If you are
currently receiving this list via e-mail, you will be affected. This
has been planned for some time now but we need to move faster then I
would like. I just received a bill from our co-location facility for
the GroupStudy service and let's just put it this way, in most locations
rent on a two bedroom apartment is less expensive. So we need to try
and reduce our bandwidth usage (an eventually find another co-location
facility).

It has been quite clear for some time now that the GroupStudy server
needs help. We are dropping an unacceptable number of messages (I
personally have had five in a row discarded) and the messages that make
it take a random amount of time to propagate. To fix this, I have
purchased a new server and bandwidth (at a lower cost facility). We
will be migrating to the new server in the next few days. Once the move
is complete we will cut over to the new server.

But wait it gets better .. We are dumping majordomo as our list
software! Our new software will allow you to change a number of
options. For example you will be able to suspend distribution of the
e-mails, receive e-mails in digest format, change your e-mail address,
etc.

You will receive a welcome message with your account information. The

message will contain your username/password, instructions on how to
login to the server, and instructions on how to unsubscribe. Please
save this e-mail for future reference. It is also a good idea to login
to the server and set your password to something more memorable then the
random password given.

If you stop receiving e-mails from the list after the change, please
send me an e-mail (after verifying it is not a problem at your end such
as misconfigured anti-spam software etc.).

Take care,

Paul Borghese

RE: Sprint Internet Backbone and VoIP? [7:70665]

2003-06-16 Thread James Willard
My company is using Sprint's Internet backbone for VoIP. We initially
started our VoIP project as VoFR several years back using their FR
network but migrated to IP when we were able to get a good deal on full
IP T1s to every office.

VoIP works pretty well across the backbone. Every office is no more than
2-5 hops away from each other. The problem with going across a backbone
is that you don't have end-to-end QoS and so we still experience some
voice dropouts at times. Something Sprint just started offering that
helped out a lot is their CoS option that for a $150 one-time setup fee
per site, they will apply a policy map to their gateway interface so
that as traffic crosses the slowest part of the link (the T1 between you
and Sprint), voice traffic will get priority. Of course, that's
something new they're offering and not all of their routers will support
that yet. We had to have a circuit moved from their Stockton to their
Anaheim POP because the router we were on in Stockton did not support
this yet.

We've played with a Sitara QosWorks box and got a lot better voice
quality than we ever did when we let the 3810s handle QoS, but again,
things still weren't perfect pin-drop quality. Anyway, Sprint is
pretty good about not letting their backbone get too congested before
building out, so the cause of problems is going to be traffic getting
jammed up on your T1 between yourself and Sprint and not the Sprint
backbone itself.

James

Hi all,

I have an issue on a 7200 where it appears that I am running out of memory
although none of the show outputs that I have seen tell me that. When I try
to issue the show run nothing happens, I get no output. If I try to copy
start run it gives me the following error:

I was thinking that perhaps this configuration is to large and it needs to
be compressed. Perhaps I need to use the command service compress-config
but not quite sure since all this is doing is compressing the NVRAM portion.
I dont think that that is where my problem is but I could be wrong, please
explain.

Could someone explain to me what causes this to occur and how to fix it
(besides a reboot).

Here is the output of the show version.

RE: Prolonged Batchlers Vs. CCNP ? [7:69483]

2003-06-01 Thread James Edwards
Hi,

I've been following this discussion about the Certs vs. a College Degree and
I'd like to just add something that people should really think hard about
before they choose between the two, and share some of my own observations
working in the current IT industry.

I don't know if everyone is aware of this, but the current trend in the U.S.
high-tech industry is the ongoing and increasing trend of the exportation
of IT jobs to Asia and India where workers will work for 10% of what we are
paid here in the U.S. This is a pure and simple business decision, and I
understand why companies are doing this, although the consequences to us
here in the U.S. who now work in the IT industry is not so comforting. Just
as most of the manufacturing jobs have left the U.S., the same thing is
going on for IT as well. Globalization is here to stay and there's really
not much we can do about this trend as corporations cross national borders
and their loyalty is not towards their workers, but toward their invenstors.

Competition for IT jobs is now fierce, and although not all IT jobs will
leave the U.S., I do not think we will see what happened in the 90's repeat
itself. In many ways, from what I've seen going on in the last couple of
years, in general what you know doesn't hold as much weight as who you know
in finding and keeping IT employment.

I am in the networking industry now, and without mentioning the company I
work for, which is a major player, we are still going through layoffs and
downsizing. I honestly do not know whether I will have a job from week to
week, and it isn't because my work skills are poor or lack the certs. Many
of my collegues have been laid off in the last two years, had far more
skills and certs than I had, and are sadly still out of work.

I frankly feel quite upset that the work I do is some of the most
challenging I've ever done and enjoy immensely most of the time, but the
hard facts regarding the health of the IT industry in this county seems to
indicate that I'm faced with another career change sooner rather than later.
I don't think many of us in the IT field can be certain we will have long
term careers anymore.

That being said, in my opinion, the College degree is a far more valuable
basis on which to build a career. Even if you get your B.S./B.A. degree in
one subject, you can build on it and get a Masters in another subject if you
find the industry you are in changing, or if you seek a career change at
some point. This is important to remember, because the average person in
today's world will end up changing careers many times in a life time as
opposed to working for one company like many of our fathers did.

One of the most important things to remember is that the degree you earn can
never be taken away -- Cisco Certs are valid for only a few years and if you
let them lapse you have to start all over again. That's not to say someone
in the IT field won't continue to grow, recertify or earn newer Certs at a
higher level, but those Certs will never make up for the fact that if the
job you are applying for requires a college degree - which many, many of the
better jobs do -- and if you don't have one, you will not even be considered
for the position, even when you have industry experience.

As a side note, many of us in the IT industry went into the industry with
Certs, but due to the reality of our jobs taking 60 - 70 hours of our time
each week, many of us have let our Certs lapse because there just is no time
left at the end of the week to devote to training. I would love to have the
opportunity to increase my skill set outside of what my job requires, but it
isn't realistic right now.

Anyway, my point in all this is to suggest to everyone that the best thing
we can do to help ourselves navigate through our lives and working careers
is to try and make choices that will provide us with the most options down
the road, and regardless of whether you agree with the system or not, the
college degree offers the most flexibility and a solid foundation in the
long run, while the Certs should be seen as finite, short run solution to
gaining the knowledge you need to do your job now.

My two cents...

I still seem to be unable to get across the central point. It does not
matter what is more potent or more reliable than the other. The point is
that neither should be either undervalued or overvalued by way of unfair
propaganda and preconceptions.

I have experienced that a college degree holder can also be as incompetent
and moronic as a non-holder, but I DO NOT go on a crusade to ridicule
college education. Nor do I discourage someone from EARNING a degree, and,
in fact, I completely agree with the idea that a bachelors degree should be
EARNED when it is most opportune: early

Robert/Nikolai, thanks for the suggestions, I think one of my problems with
going down that route will be that this telco (British Telecom) just hold
their hands up when you even say the word 'router' and say Nothing to do
with us mate, our end to end test shows total connectivity up to our cut-off
point.

A couple of questions. Should 'show cdp neighbours' show my router at the
other end of the leased line?

This is some output from 'debug ppp negotiation', not sure if it makes much
sense to anyone out there or is it just telling me that the LCP setup
requests are timing out?

RE: Am I over my head guys? [7:69746]

2003-05-29 Thread James Gosnold
I will be interested to see the answers of others to this too. My guess is
many will tell you to 'go for it'. I'm in a similar position in that I am
beginning to get the offer of interviews for senior(ish) roles and am a CCNP
with minimal 'real' experience so am a little nervous about being 'found
out' as a fraud.

Yet in my current position I felt exactly the same way when I joined this
company, I had just obtained my MCSE and was joining this company with 20
offices nationwide and I was nervous of being overwhelmed.

Within 2 months I was bored again.

Another question is did you 'lie' to secure the position? Because if you
didn't (or at least didn't stretch the truth too much) then you have nothing
to worry about, you will grow into the position as I'm sure your prospective
employers fell you will after interviewing you.

The insecurities you are voicing sound only natural but life has losers,
winners, and those that just muddle on in mediocrity. Now I'm not saying
there is anything dramatically wrong with mediocrity if you are the
'comfortable' type but I think the winners in life have a 'go for it'
mentality and the rest of us, well we just don't.

I need to apply a little more of this logic to myself as well!!

2003-05-28 Thread James Gosnold
Dear all,

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. Unfortunately when this line
went down I lost connectivity (because my company are a bunch of
tight-fisted *7^%$£ who rejected my suggestion of getting an ISDN card for
the 1721 to act as back-up in the event of the leased line dropping) to the
remote site and wasn't able to check the remote router.

I drove there this morning and couldn't even ping the router, so consoled
into it, and got a screen full of:

Which I assume is the routers own little way of telling me that it has a
serious problem. I can't even send a 'break' or Ctrl + Brk to access the rom

Thanks!

Leased line/1721 problem [7:69573]

2003-05-27 Thread James Gosnold
Dear all,

I have something of a problem I hoped someone might offer some advice on.

We have a 1721 router at each end of a 128k leased line. The line went down
this morning, red alarm light on the CSU, router showed as Serial Interface
Up, Line protocol down. Ok fair enough, reported the fault, telco claimed to
repair the fault.

Alarm light on CSU is no longer red but 'show interface serial0' still shows
Interface Up, Line protocol down. I've power-cycled the routers with no joy.
Engineers from the telco have actually come on site and performed an end to
end test and are telling me it's fine.

Looking at the advice offered here by Cisco:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps221/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a008007cd3d.html#xtocid8
they tell me that the problem could be: The local or remote router, a problem with
the leased line or a problem with the CSU/DSU. Great thanks, that's helpful!!

Can anybody offer any suggestions on what might have gone wrong? It seems
strange to me that a pair of routers that worked perfectly fine for 8 months
have developed a fault at exactly the same time as the leased line did? How
can I prove to the telco that it is their problem?

The config of these routers is really simple by the way, 1 x Ethernet
Interface, 1 x Serial (WIC) interface, static route, encapsulation ppp, no
chap/pap, that's about it!

Thanks, James.

Dave,

If I press the 'loopback' button on the DSU itself then the router
recognises this and shows Interface up, line protocol down (looped).

Strange thing I noticed is that if I chance encapsulation to HDLC and press
the local loopback button on the DSU I get Interface up, line protocol up
(looped).

Yes you are quite right, good to finish off these threads by confirming what
the solution to my problem actually was!

It was the 'logging monitor debug' global config command that made the debug
output start coming through to my telnet session.

Still don't really understand why as I don't have to on the Cisco 3000

Show PPP mulitlink says there are no active bundles.

So, not anywhere near enough debug output AND this also shows how 2 x B
channels are coming up, BRI0:1 seems to call and then BRI0:2 seems to
receive a call.

I don't understand why this is happening, the led's confirm there are 2

that.

It's frustrating really, I'm going over ISDN technologies for my CCNP exams
at the moment, you think you understand it and then the only 2 real-life
Cisco ISDN routers I have to look after don't seem to back up what I've
learned!

As far as I can tell the only line of output included is the IPCP line that
I wouldn't normally get!

Yet in my study guide there should be lines and lines of output showing all
the challenge/response and other various LCP info.

Is it something to do with the 801 IOS?

Debug display to VTY [7:66762]

2003-04-03 Thread James Gosnold
Um, probably a silly one for you all.

I have a 1721 router at either end of a leased line. I telnet into the
router and:

Router#debug serial int
Serial network interface debugging is on
Router#terminal monitor

And nothing. Shouldn't I get some debug messages here, keep alives and such
between the CSU and my router? It's a live connection and the line works, as
far as I knew this was all I needed to enter to view debug output from a
telnet session? In fact I don't appear to be getting debug output for
anything so I'm missing something silly here but I thought 'terminal
monitor' was sufficient?

Regards, James.

Confused over NAT [7:65926]

2003-03-21 Thread James Gosnold
Dear all,

Just having a slight problem getting my head around NAT regarding the
example configurations in the study guides I have.

access-list 1 permit 10.0.0.1 0.0.0.255 (defines list of addresses)

ip nat pool mynatpool 222.2.2.1 222.2.2.254 netmask 255.255.255.0 (defines
pool of inside global addresses NAT can replace the SA with)
ip nat inside source list 1 pool mynatpool (applies the addresses laid out
in the access-list as inside addresses and tells router to replace SA from
mynatpool)

int eth0
ip address 10.0.0.1 255.255.255.0
ip nat inside (tells NAT that this is where inside addresses come from)

int ser0
ip address 133.4.4.1 255.255.255.0
ip nat outside

So here is my confusion:

If the Ser0 interface is the WAN address (133.4.4.1) and it replaces the
inside local address with a SA from mynatpool (222.2.2.1 - 222.2.2.254) then
how will the packet get back to the WAN interface? I thought that NAT would
replace the inside local address with the address of the WAN interface, not
a group of different public ip addresses? How will the packet get back if
the SA is from the range 222.2.2.1 - 254 and yet the IP address of the WAN
interface is clearly not from this range?

Confused from London

Regards, James.

Modular QoS CLI [7:65074]

I am not sure how I should word my access-list or the police statements

so that I can stop these two subnets from saturating our bandwidth (6 MB) to
the Internet.
I want to limit traffic coming in and going out.

Question about custom queuing [7:64516]

2003-03-05 Thread James Gosnold
Just going through the Cisco Press book in preperation for the CCNP remote
access exam, one thing cropped up on the section about custom queuing that
confused me.

The book refers to Queue 0 which is the system queue and what traffic is
serviced by this queue. One thing stuck out to me, namely 'Spanning Tree
Keepalives'. Now I thought Spanning Tree was a Layer 2 technology designed
to prevent loops on bridges and switches and therefore wouldn't cross a
router anyway? Anybody care to shed any light?

Thanks, James.

Dave,

Satellite is not DSL and DSL is not satellite. I think that was a typo. :)

I have a Direcway Satellite System and the ONLY WAY I got the VPN to work is

1. Not launching the VPN from the computer that is directly connected to the
satellite rcvr/trans box, because it does not work!!!

2. Loaded Windows XP and bridged the USB and the NIC

3. Configured the NIC with an IP address and mask

4. Installed a switch, you can use a hub, and connected up the computer

5. Connected my laptop to the switch

6. Configured the NIC on my laptop to be on the same network as the computer
and
used it as your gateway

Good luck,

RE: Voice degradation problem in Cisco VoIP network [7:63823]

2003-02-25 Thread James Willard
Regardless of bandwidth, the voice packets need to be given a higher
priority than the rest of the traffic. Voice is extremely time
sensitive, and jitter will occur if there's a one-way trip time of
around 200ms.

One thing to consider is whether or not you're truly using VoIP (which
is VoIPoFR in your case), or VoFR. They're similar, but still quite
different. If you're truly running VoIPoFR, the following is a link that
guides you through configuring QoS and improving voice quality:

Hi,

I am getting voice degradation problem b/w our two sites. Both of these
2 sites are connected using Framerelay with a very good bandwidth.
Routers on both sides are 2600 Series with VoIP cards. Calls from one
PBX are forwarded to my 2600 router and then it will transmit the VoIP
packets to next 2600 Series which will get it back to the destination.

The problem is the voice quality which is really terrible. Can you
please kindly let me know what are the factors that I should work over
now.

I am new to Cisco Ip Telephony. So please let me know the basic points
or factors on which I should base my research now. I will do my hardwork
to resolve it if you guys can give me the basic points to work on.

I will really appreciate your co-operation.

Thanks alot in advance.

RE: flapping of trunk ports (trunk non-trunk) [7:62951]

2003-02-14 Thread Walker, James - Is
I have seen this problem before.

Basically you have a layer 1 problem thus, your fiber.

Some possible problems to look at:

1. Is your fiber longer than IEEE standard?
With GBIC-SX, 550m for multi-mode
With GBIC-LH, 300m for multi-mode
With GBIC-LH with modal cable, 550m for multi-mode
With GBIC-LH, 5K for single mode

My guess is you are using MM with SX GBICs and you have patch panels in the
middle of you run and you are also using fiber patch cords. Look for loose
or bad ends, dust lint between your patches, and/or even a bad run.

Hope this helps.

Jim

 Hi all,

Is there anyone who have suggestion for this problem:

in my catalyst 6500 I have a lot of message like this,
even 60 for day:

 Switch_1 (enable) 04/21/1998,03:15:40:DTP-5:Port 1/1 has
become non-trunk

 Switch_1 (enable) 04/21/1998,03:15:41:DTP-5:Port 1/1 has
become trunk

 I specify that:

 1) both of the ends of this link are in trunk on mode
(no auto, no
 desirable)
 2) The fiber seems OK, indeed I have actived the UDLD in
aggressive mode for
this link and the stase is still: bidirectional
 3) both of the ends of this link have dot1q
encapsulation

I have read that a valid workaroud is to migrate from the
on mode to
nonegotiate mode, but I don't want that this just hide
the problem,
 without solving it.

 Any suggestion?

 Thanks

 Luca

 Hi All,
I have very simple question, Can we use duplicate ips on serial interfaces
among them seleves although we cannot use duplicate ip on serial with
 Ethernet(lan interface) or loopback interface.

 My topology is like this

Client router server router(connected back to back)
   2 interfaces 2 inetrfaces

these routers connected back to back

 configuration
 int serial 0/0
 encap hdlc
 ip address 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.0

 int serial 0/1
 ip address 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
 encap hdlc

now if all the two interfaces of serial even if given duplicate ip among
themselves works fine. no error from cli .interfaces are up
and i am able to ping remote side.

 The ques is that

 1) Lan interface also was in different subnet but serial interface
doesnot accept that ips as duplicate or of loopback

2)What Implication such have on my design ,any limitation it has

Does this type of design can be used,

This is small thing is confusing me about ip.

 Thanx in advance

RE: Broadcast Packet [7:60738]

2003-01-09 Thread James Willard
Well first of all, how is the machine's networking configured? If your
network is supposed to have a /24 netmask (255.255.255.0) but you set it
to /25 (255.255.255.128) on that one machine, that would explain why
that machine thinks 10.0.3.127 is the correct broadcast address. What
netmask does that machine have?

Subject: Broadcast Packet [7:60738]

I have a small network where users have been complaining of slowness. I
decided to run sniffer and was really confused about a machine running
on ip address 10.0.3.10 sending a packet to a non-existing ip address
which is 10.0.3.127. I understand that broadcast will be sent to all
the hosts in the network only to existing ip addresses, but don't
understand why the broadcast is going to 10.0.3.127. It doesn't effect
the machine, but
ofcourse its taking the bandwidth on the ethernet wire. Thanks,

SNMP Status: notPresent(6) [7:60633]

2003-01-08 Thread James Willard
Hi all,

I have a 3662 router with four NM-1E2W modules. In each of those modules
is a WIC-1DSU integrated T1 CSU/DSU module, thus giving me Serial 1/0,
2/0, 3/0, and 4/0. All four of those T1s are up and operational, but I
have a SNMP management web page that's not showing them as being up
because SNMP is showing:

interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifDescr.1 = Serial1/0
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifDescr.2 = Serial2/0
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifDescr.3 = Serial3/0
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifDescr.4 = Serial4/0
..
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifOperStatus.1 = notPresent(6)
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifOperStatus.2 = notPresent(6)
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifOperStatus.3 = notPresent(6)
interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifOperStatus.4 = notPresent(6)

I can't figure out why their status would be notPresent when it should
be up. I have a 3640 with the same integrated T1 modules that shows
up for the serial ports. Does anybody know what might be wrong?

Thanks,

James Willard

RE: SNMP Status: notPresent(6) [7:60633]

2003-01-08 Thread James Willard
Actually, that is a snmpwalk from linux. I should have mentioned that.
Snmpwalk shows notPresent for those particular serial ports, and up
for other similar hardware on different routers. The IOS release is
12.2.13, so perhaps it's just an unlucky release :). I'll check with the
TAC too, but I was wondering if this was just a configuration issue
somehow.

Thanks,

Have you tried directly a snmpwalk from a linux? but I don't think you
have a problem with the monitoring a station because is working fine
with the other router. It sounds like a software problem, try to check
in TAC what bugs your version has and keep us informed

RE: O/T more campus design issues [7:60136]

2003-01-02 Thread James Willard
Priscilla,

You'll need to either have a domain controller on each segment or set
the ip helper-address x.x.x.x on the DC-less interface on the router
that's routing the two segments. In other words, if ethernet0 is on
subnet 1 without a DC, and ethernet1 is on subnet 2 with a DC, place the
command on ethernet0. NetBIOS will attempt to resolve names by
broadcast, and the helper address will turn that broadcast into a
unicast towards the IP of the DC you specify in the config. Let me know
how that works.

You all remember my very simple campus network re-design that I've been
helping out with? It sure has been keeping me humble. ;-)

So we upgraded the single subnet to two subnets and two VLANs.

Everything is working OK except for Windows networking. The PCs on the
new subnet can't find a domain controller for authentication.

So, you can feel free to yell at me for not gathering more information
on the symptoms, but the client hasn't told me much. ;-) But does this
ring a bell with anyone? Are there standard recommendations on how to
handle this in a subnetted VLANed internetwork.

I'm not too well informed on Windows networking. My co-author wrote that
chapter in my troubleshooting book.

Thank-you so much!

Priscilla

Jim, Based upon 12.1 IOS...

See CCO for docs on how to copy a replacement image onto the router..
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios121/121cgcr/
fun_c/fcprt2/fcd203.htm

You obviously have local access to the device, as assumed by the output
you have posted; from the console session, check the boot parameters
with a SHOW BOOTVAR. If you are sure the flash memory is not damaged,
then I would format the flash, and then tftp a new copy of the IOS image
onto it.

See CCO for information on setting the boot variable.

Yes, you can refer back to the case studies for all the questions.

You will lose average of 3 min. per question as you have to refer back to

After spending over an hour on case studies (hint hint), my head was aching

RE: OT finding station trying to become MasterBrowser [7:58701]

2002-12-06 Thread James Heistand
If it is a switched network, flood the IP in question after hours and
look at the switches for the port with all the traffic. If there are no
switches, then you will have to narrow it down to an individual hub and
then look at that group of workstaions. I'm sure there is a more
technical answer to this.

Subject: OT finding station trying to become MasterBrowser [7:58701]

I don't think there's any answer to this, but I thought I would check.
How can I find the physical location of a system if I know the
following:

NetBIOS name, IP address, MAC Address, and the Domain it is attached
too.

I have a system that is trying to become the Master Browser and I've
discovered all of the above information. The problem is, it's a large
flat network, so the IP address comes from a huge pool and doesn't help
identify a network segment. The NetBIOS name isn't helpful and the
vendor code in the MAC address is shared by almost all the systems.

Any utilities that you know of that could help find this station?

It's a city-wide school system and driving around from school to school
isn't practical, although it is a rather small city... :-)

Any info would be great. Thanks.

Priscilla

Passed BSCI 640-901 [7:58019]

2002-11-25 Thread James Gosnold
Dear all,

I passed BSCI 640-901 on Saturday with a score of 767/1000. I'm not overly
pleased with the score or how I performed but my preparation wasn't the best
in the fortnight leading up to the exam and I felt awful on the day of the
exam (heavy cold). Also had Prometric mess me around (again) re-scheduling
my exam e.t.c (may cover that on another thread).

I would also that I did 'pass the exam' more than learn the technologies
really well which is not ideal, as I said I was going quite well but the
couple of weeks leading up to the exam gave me some problems, work e.t.c but
I suppose a pass is a pass. Hopefully the next 3 exams will go a little more
smoothly, taking a break now until January having gone from zero knowledge
about Cisco technologies to CCNA to passing the first CCNP exam in little
over 4 months I think I've done ok and am a bit tired!

As for the exam itself I would say it is quite tricky, I used both the Sybex
and Cisco Press study guides although these were for the old Routing exam.
Read the questions properly, not feeling great I caught myself nearly
clicking 'Next' on a couple of occasions when I had clearly given the
incorrect answer having not read the question properly, this scared me as I
came to the end of the exam as I was wondering how many times I had done
this without noticing.

I was surprised the way the questions came in groups, all the EIGRP, BGP,
OSPF, RIP and other questions all came in bunches, basically once you get a
BGP question you will be getting 10 of them in a row which is not how I
remember the CCNA exam. I received 4 questions on IS-IS and for this I had
only read the text you can download from the Cisco site AND I only managed
to read this the day before and scored 75% on that section so the text must
be pretty good.

I'm sure the usual process of elimination technique served me well on the
exam too, you may not know the answer for sure but of the 4 choices you can
certainly eliminate 2 of the answers and possibly a 3rd therefore leaving
you with a Sherlock Holmes style conclusion When all the impossible answers
have been eliminated the only one remaining, no matter how implausible, must
be the truth!

Also received one sim which I'm pretty sure I got wrong although I can't
really say why or how as this would give a question away which I am not
allowed to do. Just know how to configure and setup OSPF very well!!!

Thanks to those of you who have answered questions I've had in the last few
weeks and in fact all of you who participate in this forum which is a great
help to those trying to further our professional education.

Regards, James.

RE: cisco router as DHCP server [7:58049]

2002-11-25 Thread James Willard
A quick search on Cisco.com's main page for IOS DHCP server reveals:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps1830/products_feature_
guide09186a008008743b.html

(Hopefully the list didn't eat the link as it often does, and watch the
line wrap..)

Before asking such a simple question, it's best to attempt to find the
answer on your own. It will build your own problem solving skills and
you might learn quite a bit more in the process... Just my $0.02

The network consist of 1 server, 1 switch, ans 10 workstations.

RE: Weird MC3810-VCM6 error [7:57916]

2002-11-22 Thread James Willard
This is just a hunch, but could you possibly have a high performance VCM
in a non-V3 MC3810 (i.e., MC3810 or MC3810-V)? It will say on the back
of the chassis what type it is. Only the V3 model supports the high
performance VCM, so using one in a non-V3 might cause that error...

Hi group.
I'd like to know if anyone else has seen this strange error in MC3810
with VCM6. Basically, if I load an IOS that has no Voice feature, the
card is detected as. 1 6-DSP(slot2) Voice Compression Module(v01.K0) and
the router boots fine. If I load any image with Voice, the card is
detected as. 1 6-DSP(slot2) High Performance Compression Module(v01.K0)
and the router loops with this error.

RE: TFTP error message [7:57752]

2002-11-19 Thread James Willard
Well, that's basically how TFTP works on Unix-style systems. You have to
first create the file (i.e., 'touch cisco-confg'), then give everyone
write permissions to it (i.e., 'chmod 666 cisco-confg') before it can be
written by the TFTP server. As far as I know, there's no way to
circumvent that using the default tftp server - at least not according
to the man pages. It may be possible to find a third-party TFTP server
that will, or modify the source to one and compile your own if it's a
significant problem.

a passing score of 776/1000, are all CCNP exams the same?

RE: MC3810 - VoIP Requirements [7:57426]

2002-11-14 Thread James Willard
The MC3810 requires 64MB of RAM to run a VoIP feature set. You'll also
almost certainly need 16MB of flash as well. To support the 64MB of RAM,
you'll have to also get an updated BootROM. Those are free from Cisco's
1-800 line - part number BOOT-381V=. And of course, once you have all of
that, you'll also need to get a voice-enabled image (something with a
v5 in it). Also, the 3810 needs some sort of hardware to support your
VoIP needs. This includes a DSP module and some type of voice interface,
either digital (T1 or E1), or analog (EM, FXS, or FXO).

It's a lot to digest, but I hope it helps :).

Hello All,

I just purchased a 3810 to practice some Voice labs. I was hoping

The 3810 I'm getting has 32 MB of RAM - Is this enough to run the 3810

the 3810 to support VoIP ?

Thanks in advance!

NIC Number

NIC Network Number

Network Boundary (In terms of summarization at the network boundary)

Probably the silliest question you've had on here but my head can't take
