So is that how people without experience do it? Just keep failing the ccie written exam until you've memorized all the questions or get lucky? You must be single, or rich, or both. My wife has a fit when I spent $125 on a exam I am well prepared for, let alone spend $300 on the written. And my employer reimburses for the exam. I guess now I know why my employer will only pay for an exam twice. Try picking up a book and learning something, then you could pass the exam on the first try. I just passed MCSE/SD and even though it was free, I felt her pain. Yeah I hear you brother. Our company reimburses successful tests and I've just bombed MPLS twice. Every time I bomb, the wife gets to go on a shopping spree worth $AUD190 to balance the equation. heheh...you now know the difference between dating and marriage! Where I work, we have a trade agreement with a testing facility, so I get cisco boots and tests for free. Not only do I not have to pay first then get reimbursed. But even though I'm missing work, I still get my 40 hours paycheck when I'm at the boot. Sounds like a win/win situation, right? Wrong, my wife complains because I have to sign an agreement that says I won't get the cert and then quit. She think they should shell out 10k for it all and that I should just be able to leave the next day. Dating and married ? :) I have been dating for 11 years now, yes .. with the same girl :) Would seem like a marriage dont you think ? BUt i guess it's the same everywhere, that you have to sign a paper that you don't leave after getting a certificate. They mostly wanna kaap you a year or more, depends on the contract. Leave within that period off time ? Bring out the cash and start paying for the cost they had for putting you through certification. She's obsessed with money. My wife is also psychic. I was out to lunch a few weeks back at a sandwich shop with a bunch of guys from the office. I had just sat down to eat and my wife calls on the cell phone and started yelling at me for spending money at lunch. I hadn't even begun to eat my sandwich. My wife also doesn't like to front money for my employer, they should prepay for an exam (or other expenses) on the company credit card. I really don't mind. I've been in worse situations. At a previous job I traveled A LOT, and it took forever to get my employer to cut an expense check. Trying to finish the discussion I would say: I believe that the core of discussion should be: some people are much more intersted to get the certification instead to learn to get experience and increase the skills. They went to a "bootcamp" pay $7000 to get CCNP in 11 days or 11000 for CCIE in 15 days.Do believe that they can learn enough to be a CCIE in 15 days? I don't think so. It's sad. There was(fortunatily) a "bootcamp" CCNP guy on my team that uses a web browser to check DNS resolution. He doesn't know about "nslookup" and have no idea how to configure OSPF,BGP,Frame Relay,etc. I hope that some day Cisco implements a new exam methodology to check the real candidate knowledge. But is geting better the exams 640-603, 605 and 606 are much better than prior 640-50x. But I hope that Cisco do the same to 350-001. I have implemented a pre-selection test on my company to prevent against the "certification guys" . She doesn't like that I have to shell out the money first even though I get re-imbursed. She thinks my money is HER money and has nothing to do with the company. I don't think the boot's about learning the science, though. I understand the science, but I wanted to know what specific things that I would need to work on for the test. I think boots have their place. I found, however, that if I didn't understand the science, I wouldn't have passed the tests with or without the boot. Cisco is very good at constructing their tests in a way that doesn't test trivia, but rather tests your ability to apply the knowledge to real situations. Well, almost real, anway. my exp is quite same, but even pity... First time, I got 85, then for the secondary, I felt quite better, but only got 103, 2 points missed. I can't remeber the last time I got to play golf. With carpal tunnel and work and sleep and studying theres not much time for golf. I though I was going to play golf on vacation a few months ago. Beutiful course in the caribbean, even saved my lunch money for a whole week so I could play a round, but my wife wanted me to spend time with her instead. You are right about this John!
When my wife was my girlfriend, she never complained about Cert testing or
buying equipment. I was making $70,000 and could not afford to get
married yet.
When my wife was my fiancee, she started to complain about the certs. I
worked 2 part time jobs in addition to my full time job to pay for lab
equipment, books, airplane tickets, a PIX 515 and 2621, both used. I was
making $85,000 and hated my job came home at 10 pm-did weekends too.
I passed the CSS1, CCNP, and CISSP. Wage is now $120,000 and I am the #1
engineer in my company working on wireless network design, policies, and
security. I am relaxed and come home at 7 pm no weekends and I pay for
everything.
My wife now fights with me when I want to buy aironet access points and
cards. I have lost this fight totally. She has nearly stopped my Amazon
buying, although she doesn't know about the $1000 I just did :-), If I
even mention that I am taking a Cisco test, forget love for a week. I
figure since I will have to fly to Belgium for the CCIE security, no love
for a month. And get this, if I hadn't invested my money like I did,
Marriage would have been impossible financially. Now she wants to quit
her job and have a kid yet she is stopping me from investing in IT with
training/books/devices...etc and she thinks I should be able to earn
$150-200,000 a year within 3 years! (Holy Delusions of Grandeur!) I have
no idea how I am going to finance next years' changes. How can I possibly
make more money without investing in my education be it cert or not cert?
Certs are really not that important, I need all the training I can get.
Education is necessary to supplement on the job experiences.
What is it with these people If only I could be a Cisco Certified

heheh...you now know the difference between dating and marriage! Where I
work, we have a trade agreement with a testing facility, so I get cisco
boots and tests for free. Not only do I not have to pay first then get
reimbursed. But even though I'm missing work, I still get my 40 hours
paycheck when I'm at the boot. Sounds like a win/win situation, right?
Wrong, my wife complains because I have to sign an agreement that says I
won't get the cert and then quit. She think they should shell out 10k for
it
all and that I should just be able to leave the next day.

Guys, If you do suffer from CTS, a good exercise and also cheap I might add, is taking two elastic bands, relatively 'tough' and putting them around your fingers and thumbs and then using your fingers to expand the elastic bands. Do this when you have nothing to 'do' in front of the monitor, and you'll help alleviate if not reduce the effects of CTS. I started doing this, and I can now open a packet of sweets without cringing in pain! Hi all, Last words about this topic: I have the solution for all of your problems. Find yourself a partner with the same interests :) I'm studying with my boyfriend for the certifications and we buy ourself a lab, we never had a discussion about the money. We just have to buy one set of books and also do different courses :) And if we both pass the exam we go to a movie or to a restaurant because we spare some money. Just me 2 cents, Paula = Ing.
