Heard there's a new requirement between the CCIE written and lab. One now
has to sing the following song on a street corner on
Tasman Drive. Passing score is 740.

Definitely not. And it is really necessary to study the topics in this book
using other books too.

I do not have the answer for the Boson test.

If you allow me, I would like to put one more question in this subject:

- Does anyone could say if after November 4th there are not (really not)
questions about Token Ring and IPX?

Without breaking the NDA, would some also comment on the following:

- does the Cisco CCIE RS Exam Certification guide cover all the topics in

- would the Boson tests still be recommended
- In a nutshell what materials could be useful for the exam beside CCO ?

Hello, Has anyone noticed the new CCIE Lab policy on this Cisco's new
jazzy web-site? They have stated that: Candidates must attempt the CCIE
Lab exam within one year of passing the CCIE Qualification exam. It was
set to 18 months as of last week. I had planned to schedule my lab for
the last day of the 18 month period, just looking for any open slots
anywhere. My question is: What happens to candidates like me that have
not scheduled and it's been over a year since I took my written exam? Am
I pretty much scr@!$...?? If so, this is bad, real bad!! Can any one ask
Cisco if this applies to candidates after Oct. 5th or to everyone else??
Anyone
else have any other ideas?? Thank you. Sincerely.

Re: New CCIE written [7:52717]

2002-09-05 Thread Dennis Laganiere

If you take a quick look in the group archives at www.groupstudy.com you'll
find several months worth of comments about it, but basically they dropped a
few older technologies, added a bunch of new ones, upped the number of
questions, and ratcheted up the level of the questions. It's much harder,
but I think it's more relevant and does a better job of getting you ready
for the lab.

I wrote a free study guide for the exam last month that is posted at
www.cramsession.com, and I have a bunch of free documents I put together at
www.laganiere.net that you might find useful. I hope that helps...

Hi all,
I actually sat for the beta of this exam and failed by one percent The
exam was a monster BUT it was very good and very well written. I have read
this CCIE Study guide during Networkers and it is kinda overview of all key
topics, period! No one book should and can cover this exam fully for a time
being. The only solution is to STUDY STUDY and STUDY. That what i summarized
when i sat for this exam. The only shortcut is if somebody break the NDA and
submit all questions to u and u go there and pass it. The questions are from
large variety of techs and NEW techologies plus in great depth. Like u
should know IP QoS and Multicasting around the same level as u were
preparing for CCIP. Also I passed the old wriiten yesterday with 78% but I
studied for only one night (Dennis book) plus i am no cisco guru @ all. This
simply tells u the difference between the two exams. I went through the
Cisco press book but its OK as a review. The best place is CCO for the new
beast. TRUST ME!! Consult all the links thoroughly which r given in the blue
print and u MIGHT survive.

I know that CCxx Productions will have their new guide out in about a month.
Other than that, I don't know if there are other guides that are available
yet. I spoke with Dennis about a two weeks ago and he told me that he was
updating his Boson exam. I'm not sure if it is done yet.

Right now, your best bet is to print out the blueprint and start going
through each topic. You'll need to know most of it when you take the lab
anyway!

RE: New CCIE Written is here. Be afraid, be very [7:49615]

2002-07-27 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G

Well, Cisco wrote me back and they said that any CCIE Written 350-001 exams
taken on August 7th or after will be the new exam, regardless of when you
registered. So, if any of you who registered for the exam before August 7th
to take the exam after August 7th thinking that you were going to take the
current exam, you better re-schedule, just to be safe.

Regarding re-scheduling, remember that you can't retake an exam unless a
minimum of 72 hours (3 days) has passed. So, if you want to give yourself a
second chance if you flunk it the first time, make sure you re-schedule at
least three or more days before the August 7th deadline so you can schedule
your second chance before the new exam takes over!

Re: New CCIE Written is here. He afraid, be very afraid... [7:49715]

2002-07-25 Thread Gaz

I think a CCIE candidate should have some knowledge of the older stuff. The
knowledge needed isn't too deep at all. It's always good to have at least a
little knowledge of the more obscure subjects.
We;re doing a large TR migration at the moment, and it's not the only one
we've seen recently.

Hopefully the exam is a little harder. I think it was only intended in the
past to weed out the absolute no hopers before they block up lab slots, not
to be added to the signature blocks of blaggers as a qualification in its
self.

Although even if it's no harder, as long as people realise that it's not a
qualification, just a basic test to prove you might be worthy of starting
the long path to CCIE.

My two penneth.

report. I think they check most solutions, but not all! Also, they need to
give more feedback about the lab result, because you always learn from
your
 mistakes.

The lab was not too bad and I finished +- 1 hour early. I was the last one
to do the lab in South Africa this year, so I just squeezed in my
 certification before 2002.

Good luck to the people pursuing their CCIE certification, you'll need it!

2001-12-19 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

Congratulations Jacques,

Unfortunately, I think there's a good reason for the lack of feedback on
your score, because just like the results from a normal Cisco test, you only
get how many percent you did correct in each objective.

If they gave a more detailed feedback, telling you what you did wrong, and
what you did right, they would have to show more about the question or
scenario that you were examined in, and some people would not follow the NDA
but distribute this info to others who are pursuing the cert.

This is sad but necessary.

Anyway(s), again congratulations, and good luck with your security lab.

HI Group,

Completed my CCIE lab yesterday and now proud owner of CCIE number 8545. Now
for the Security lab. Thanks to the group and people that help me achieve my
goal.

I'm still a tad skeptic about the new automated marking they do on the labs;
I would have thought that I had scored more than I received on the score

Re: New CCIE Lab!!??!!! [7:12926]

2001-07-21 Thread Jason Roysdon

I was at LA Networkers this year in the CCIE Power Session, which had 2-3
proctors speaking. The gist of what I got regarding moving to a one-day lab
was to cut the fluffy CCNA-level stuff (ip addressing, etc.) and use some
sort of automation to move it along. Between that, and a longer day (I
don't recall how long, 10 or 12 hour day), it was expected to have the same
content, just less time wasting stuff.

I think this makes sense in general, but I'd still like to see it stay a
two-day format and just add more content. If it was really a matter of the
lines to get into the lab, they could just add more labs and locations.

One example of how things had already been simplified (some time back):
you're not required to configure your terminal server, where-as in the past
you were.

Basically, you need to know your stuff cold, because you'll be jumping
straight into it, and you're also going to need to be able to get very
familiar, very fast, with different scenarios. Nuke your home lab often and
force yourself to move cables around and use completely new addressing.
Don't get comfortable like you may be with your work network.

Fortunately, those of us that consult already have the advantage there.
Just about weekly, and even daily at times, I walk into a new customer
network I've never seen (or saw for two days six months ago and have terse
notes) and am expected to troubleshoot or install new gear. Of course, my
toes get a workout.

PS As a side note, I hear Halifax has the best passing rate. Folks book
there just to have a slight edge over SJO or RTP. Of course, with that
rumor floating around, I can see Cisco toughening up there ;-)

Are you missing the point that the lab with still be very tough? The only
issue is meeting the customer demand for rack time for testing. Cisco
cannot do this in a two day format and much of the two day stuff was
overhead. I personally think one day will be tougher.

Perhaps -- you may be correct -- however, it is also possible that there are
other justifiable reasons for the change and that the restructuring will be
as arduous and thorough as the original lab.

My read on what they are saying -- is that many of the fundamental tasks
(static routes etc) we should have mastered (or at least familiarized
ourselves with) during the CCNA/CCNP. However, I would be that while those
tasks will no longer be graded -- you would still need a mastery of those
basics to be able to proceed with the tasks required of a one-day lab
(Hopefully!!!). Certainly the complexities of the more advanced tasks will
assume a strong understanding of the basics. But we'll see!!!

I dont think anyone should say anything about the new lab until they have
experienced it. And if you are unfortunate enough to be able to compare both
the go ahead. I dont think CISCO is going to in anyway harm the program.

Well, the sad story is:

ISP-DIAL-CCIE retired
SNA-CCIE retired
WAN-Switching CCIE retired
Design-CCIE "decommissioned due to redesign"
New SP-CCIE just myth and vaporware so far
Security-CCIE no glimpse so far

Leaves:

RS-CCIE up and running ;-)
or maybe the nice new Juniper certifications!

Gernot

But what would you do with a Juniper cert?

Re: New CCIE Tracks

2001-03-07 Thread Erick B.

C'mon... get real. If one has the skillset to get a
JNPR cert they are knowledgable and good most likely.
Same for CCIE. Then again, it also depends on ones
attitude and what they'll work on and not work on.

Certifications *help* open doors but they don't
necessarily get you jobs. You still have to prove you
know your stuff. People who know their stuff can get
jobs almost anywhere based on their skillset and
history. They have a good reputation (ie: they get the
job done, done right, don't feed you some BS story,
etc).

Whats wrong with working for a ISP? I can understand
if it were some small Ma and Pa shop but if it was say
Level3 would you say yuck? I don't think so. Look at
the opportunitys you have at larger ISPs (new
equipment, multi-vendor, always changing, etc). I
would hate working in an all-Cisco shop. Thats yucky
to me. No exposure to other gear.

And whats so yucky about working at Juniper? Smart,
sharp, intelligent, nice people there. I know - I've
been there. You'll be working hard... but you do this
stuff because you ENJOY it right??? or do you do it
for a fat paycheck and little work? You can tell what
category people fall into fairly quickly.

Sorry for ranting...

Erick

Re: New CCIE

2000-05-29 Thread Joe Martin

I have a method that I used for the lab. Mostly developed by Bruce Caslow
and specified in his book. Here's how I start things out. This is all
generic information that I used for all my prep work. None of this material
is specific to the CCIE lab.

1-Read the entire lab. Think of all the issues involved with the protocols
and the topology.
2-Write down specific info in a list regarding IP addressing and interfaces
and summarization.
3-Draw a REALLY nice drawing of the network. Leave plenty of room to write
in addressing info.
4-Label the drawing with all the interface number.
5-Use different colored pencils for different routing and routed protocols
6-Fill in all the IPs from the list you created.
7-Then fill in the rest of the IPs from the allowed block.
8-As you read the exam, look to see if they specify summarizing so that you
create an IP scheme that can be summarized.
look at each router and write down the type/IOS version/IOS name
9-Create a script in notepad with all the common commands that you want on
each router and paste this onto each one. Put the command "hostname " last
so you can just type in the name of your router and your finished.
10-Next, put the IP addressing on all of the routers. As you do this do
whats necesary to turn up the interfaces. Frame Relay/mapping, clock rates,
ISDN/ppp/username/dialer-list.
11-After doing this on each router, go thru and ping each interface, local
and neighbor. Make sure they are all reachable. Doing this now keeps you
from wondering if you have a layer 1,2,3 problem and not a routing problem
that may show up in the steps to come. Remember to that many multipoint
interface types don't allow you to ping your local interface without some
extra programming. Also remember spoke to spoke reachability in partially
meshed NBMA networks.
12-After doing this, start the main portion of the lab.
13-Try to save access lists to the end. Remember what access lists will do
to your network. It can block DLSW, or routing protocols or AURP appletalk
tunnels, etc...
14-Try to get done early enough that you can reload your routers and make
sure everything comes up OK. Remember that a reload could change your
router ID for OSPF and mess up your virtual tunnels. But, by IPing all of
your routers before appying routing protocols will help avert these types of
problems.

THINK, THINK, THINK.

Other tips:
IPX ROUTING X.X.X where X=your router number. Ex. Router 1 will become
IPX ROUTING 0001.0001.0001
This tip makes it easy for frame relay mapping, ISDN mapping and IPX
ping testing.
APPLETALK CABLERANGE X-X X.Y where Y=router number.
This also makes if easy for frame relay mapping, ISDN mapping and
apple ping testing

January of this year I did my Voice access specialization. In February
I
passed the CCIE written. I've been hitting my engineering lab at
  work ever
since. I did 4 hours a nite every day of the week

This is excellent advice, and virtually identical to the method I found
successful when I passed last week in Halifax..

It is unfortunate Bruce Caslow is not on this list to see how well his
methodology is helping people get through the CCIE lab..

generic information that I used for all my prep work.

AALL
RIHHTT!

Way to go, Joe

So they were unable to bushwhack you after all! I gather the key here is to
work hard, read a lot, try a bunch of things in the practice labs, and of
course offer advice and good counsel on occasion here in Groupstudy.

I know your life is about to get extremely interesting. But I sure hope you
still visit once in a while.

Take care. And don't be walking too much higher than four feet off the
ground.

See you in Orlando?!
