I also pledge a keg of fine ale if we get at least 16 boats to show up again.

 My suggestions:
 Date:
Fri. Sept 13th thru Sunday Sept 15

I'm gonna throw out suggestions for a spot:
 1. Great Salt Pond, Block Island, RI. I am reasonably sure that the boat
 basin
will give us a group discount on slips as after Labor Day it slows to a
 crawl on
Block Isl. Plus, the mooring field is pretty empty so anyone who wanted a
mooring could stay right in front of The Oar. The food and drinks at The Oar
are very reasonable and very good. There are BBQ grills and tables at the
 end
of the dock for public use. We could have a pot luck BBQ one day?

 2. Milford Landing, Milford, CT. Milford Landing is the town dock in
 Milford.
They have 40 transient slips that are a short walk from a vibrant little
 town.
They have an off season rate ($2.25ft/floating docks I think) No shortage of
bars, restaurants and the like. Farther down the sound for the Westerners
 but
not out of reach for some of us coming from back East.

If I could pick a spot it would be Block Island, but I know that for some
 it's a
galaxy far, far away... ooops that was Star Wars reference :(

Did I mention the keg of fine ale?

I made a wheel cover last year. My total cost was less than $50. I bought
left over leather, cut strips to size and then took it to a shoe maker to
glue together the strips and run his sewing machine along the edges to make
holes. Boatleather has a great video showing how to sew it on. With a 54
inch wheel recall that I calculated I put in about 750 stitches. Many, many
hours watching TV and sewing.

I now want to make leather spreader patches with the left over leather.
Does anyone have an idea how to make template?

I would share the result of our partial sole refinish project. Most of the
sole on Alera looked great, except for one section at the bottom of the
steps down into the main cabin. Lynn pulled that section and did most of
the work, including the selection of the Deft Polyurethane Semi Gloss
finish. Lynn has always handled the bright work on Jubilee (our former 72

looks like it will match up with the existing finish perfectly.

For my part I am in the process of putting a sweet Boatleather cover, with
padding, on the 48 Edson wheel. In cold weather the bare metal would just
leach the heat from my fingers, so this will be a welcome upgrade. I rigged
a bicycle stand to hold the wheel so I can do it in the house. It is a
tedious job, and I'm about 1/2 done so far. I plan on finishing it up
during the big game today.

I think it would depend on the facility and the location.

Here in New York City, winter storage runs from October to May.

I would imagine in Florida it's probably more like December to February. And in
Canada, it's probably something like August to June :-)

I'd have to read my actual contract to know how our yard handles this. But, in
practice, it doesn't seem to matter much. I've always had a winter storage
contract and the yard has always treated it as meaning from the time you haul
out to the time you launch. I've launched and hauled at many different times

I left the boat in the yard all summer, or maybe if I wanted to launch in May

Re: Stus-List STORAGE CONTRACTS

2013-02-04 Thread Gary Nylander
Our yard just has a per square foot charge for 'on the hard' storage and a
fixed fee for the 'season' in the water. You go in and out when you are ready
and so are they. I have had in the water storage in the winter (once with mast
up and twice under a roof with mast down). Go in sometime in mid to late April
and out in November. The racing season starts the first week of May and ends up
in late October. We used to have to pull the mast for storage on the hard, but
about five years ago, they dropped that. This year it came out in late November
and was shrink wrapped - we will take the cover off in April, do the bottom and
touch up the Poly Glow and launch when they get the three boats that are in our
way done.

Here an update on our current winter projects. Nothing like what Harry is
doing with Mirage, but baby steps... ;)

 Partial Sole Refinish.

After the extended discussions of everything from Varnish to cows, I
though I would share the result of our partial sole refinish project. Most
of the sole on Alera looked great, except for one section at the bottom of
the steps down into the main cabin. Lynn pulled that section and did most
of the work, including the selection of the Deft Polyurethane Semi Gloss
finish. Lynn has always handled the bright work on Jubilee (our former 72
MK1). And is now started to work her magic on Alera. We did 4 coats and it
looks like it will match up with the existing finish perfectly.

For my part I am in the process of putting a sweet Boatleather cover, with
padding, on the 48 Edson wheel. In cold weather the bare metal would just
leach the heat from my fingers, so this will be a welcome upgrade. I
rigged a bicycle stand to hold the wheel so I can do it in the house. It
is a tedious job, and I'm about 1/2 done so far. I plan on finishing it up
 during the big game today.

I had it done to mine, in a color to match the hull, for about $250 plus

the NC sun (no cover).
Not as traditional as the leather but a lot easier on me!

Also the local UPS store let me ship it without having it wrapped--which was a
real time saver with a 54 inch wheel. The company wraps it in cardboard for the

Re: Stus-List Winter Projects - What's that smell

2013-02-04 Thread Martin DeYoung
On Saturday as I entered Calypso's winter cover to resume work on some wet core
repairs I exclaimed What's that smell.

It appears a local otter had defecated on Calypso's deck since my or the
co-owner's last visit (3 to 5 days). The feces had dried into a tar like
substance that took 30 minutes of soak and cleaning with Simple Green to
remove. The boat cover which can act as a green house nicely concentrated the
smell.

If this keeps up I may lobby for a short open season on otters at Shilshole Bay
Marina.

Winter project progress continues, now in new epoxy/balsa core phase. For
wheel covering I also went with the gray Boatleather covering. The wheel cover
has been in place for almost 10 years and holding up well. Calypso has a
Sunbrella cover for the wheel and binnacle (including chartplotter display and
instrument pods) to reduce weather damage.

Re: Stus-List Border Crossing From US to Canada

2013-02-04 Thread Colin Kilgour
I`ve found that clearing into Canada (as a Canadian) is generally a
straightforward phone call to CAN-PASS and then once in a while, they`ll
tell you to stay on board while an officer comes to inspect. They would
also store my family and boat details in their system, so I wouldn`t have
to recite 5 sets of passport details every time.

Clearing into the US is a real mixed bag. I`ve done it on two of the
Great Lakes, Newport, USVI, and PR and it`s a different process in each
place. And, you can research the protocols all you want in advance, but
when you get to places that are more than 10 miles from Alexandria VA (or
wherever CBP is located), they have no idea and don`t care what might be
shown on cbp.gov.

Traveling from Tortola BVI to St. John USVI to Fajardo PR last December, I
had to clear customs and immigration in both St John and Fajardo and was
also inspected on board in Fajardo. This despite the fact that Bojangles
has a valid US cruising license (which allows it to move between US ports
without inspection) and my wife and I both have NEXUS cards - which,
according to CBP.gov - allows us to travel between USVI and PR as Local
Boaters (who don`t have to report).

So, imagine my surprise when I get quarantined on my boat for about 2 hours
waiting for CBP to arrive. Then when they do, they ask me to fill out all
the same damn forms I had filled out the day before in St. John. So I do
it... and then... I want my pound of flesh from the poor agent, asking her
to explain all the nuances of the NEXUS / Trusted Traveler Program and how
it's any different from if I didn't have it...

At the end of the day, the poor agent was clearly flummoxed (and
apologetic). It seems that these great programs get designed at head
office and then the rollout gets bollocksed up.

(That said, using NEXUS at airports... is awesome!)

And lastly - the easiest US port to clear in? Newport RI... Took me about 2
minutes after a 5 day trip from Bermuda. No forms, no videophones, just a
guy on the dock who looked briefly at our passports (not even boat papers)
and decided that we were OK.

to recite 5 sets of passport details every time.

So, imagine my surprise when I get quarantined on my boat for about 2
hours waiting for CBP to arrive. Then when they do, they ask me to fill
out all the same damn forms I had filled out the day before in St. John.
So I do it... and then... I want my pound of flesh from the poor agent,
asking her to explain all the nuances of the NEXUS / Trusted Traveler
Program and how it's any different from if I didn't have it...

Took me about
2 minutes after a 5 day trip from Bermuda. No forms, no videophones, just
a guy on the dock who looked briefly at our passports (not even boat
papers) and decided that we were OK.

Partial Sole Refinish.

After the extended discussions of everything from Varnish to cows, I though
I would share the result of our partial sole refinish project. Most of the
sole on Alera looked great, except for one section at the bottom of the
steps down into the main cabin. Lynn pulled that section and did most of
the work, including the selection of the Deft Polyurethane Semi Gloss
finish. Lynn has always handled the bright work on Jubilee (our former 72

I rigged
a bicycle stand to hold the wheel so I can do it in the house. It is a
tedious job, and I'm about 1/2 done so far. I plan on finishing it up
during the big game today.

women, horses, and money... So here's an excerpt from a great song:

He was an old-time cowboy,
don't you understand
his eyes were sharp as razor blades his face was leather tan
his toes were pointed inward from a-hangin' on a horse
he was an old philosopher, of course.

He was so thin i swear you could have used him for a whip
he had to drink a beer to keep his britches on his hips
i knew i had to ask him about the mysteries of life

he spit between his boots
and he replied

it's faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, and more money

Martin,

In the future you might try the cleaning product, Awesome which can be
purchase at the dollar store or dollar tree, one or both I'm not sure.
My wife swears by this stuff. Most recently I had the back of a Nikon
N90 which had a rubberized coating that became very sticky to touch.
I attempted to remove the coating rubbing with rag soaked in acetone
with no success. Moving ahead several years I mentioned
the situation to my bride who took the camera back and disappeared for
10 minutes only to return with the coating gone.
She cleans everything with the stuff. The only restriction is, do not
clean glass, it will etch glass. Will it work on Otter crap
better than Simple Green we don't know but it might. There is that west
coast air to considered.

Re: Stus-List Winter Projects

2013-02-04 Thread Rick Brass
You can buy leather at about any good fabric store that offers upholstery
material. You can get scrap pieces at upholstery shops, belt makers, some
shoe repair shops.

There is not much worth watching on TV, which is precisely thy sewing a
cover on your wheel while sitting in front of the TV is such a good winter
project. I did mine a few years ago, and I'd guess 750 or so stitches took
three or four evenings.

As far as the cost, watch on Ebay and you will see elk hide kits at pretty
reasonable prices - far less than you'd pay for anew kit from Edson. I think
I bought my kit from someone who never got around to sewing it on his wheel,
and it only cost $25 or $30. I think I still have a foot or two of left over
3 wide elk hide on the boat. I thought about putting a cover on the shift
lever, but bought a spare on Ebay and put a thick coat of epoxy and varnish
on the wood instead (another good winter project).

I would think a plastic boot would be the best template.

I now want to make leather spreader patches with the left over leather.

Lakes, Newport, USVI, and PR and it`s a different process in each place. And,
you can research the protocols all you want in advance, but when you get to
places that are more than 10 miles from Alexandria VA (or wherever CBP is
located), they have no idea and don`t care what might be shown on cbp.gov.

Traveling from Tortola BVI to St. John USVI to Fajardo PR last December, I had
to clear customs and immigration in both St John and Fajardo and was also
inspected on board in Fajardo. This despite the fact that Bojangles has a
valid US cruising license (which allows it to move between US ports without
inspection) and my wife and I both have NEXUS cards - which, according to
CBP.gov - allows us to travel between USVI and PR as Local Boaters (who don`t
have to report).

So, imagine my surprise when I get quarantined on my boat for about 2 hours
waiting for CBP to arrive. Then when they do, they ask me to fill out all the
same damn forms I had filled out the day before in St. John. So I do it...
and then... I want my pound of flesh from the poor agent, asking her to explain
all the nuances of the NEXUS / Trusted Traveler Program and how it's any
different from if I didn't have it...

At the end of the day, the poor agent was clearly flummoxed (and apologetic).
It seems that these great programs get designed at head office and then the
rollout gets bollocksed up.

(That said, using NEXUS at airports... is awesome!)

And lastly - the easiest US port to clear in? Newport RI... Took me about 2
minutes after a 5 day trip from Bermuda. No forms, no videophones, just a guy
on the dock who looked briefly at our passports (not even boat papers) and
decided that we were OK.

Cheers,
Colin

Re: Stus-List STORAGE CONTRACTS

2013-02-04 Thread Rick Brass
I think you're right, Edd. When I was in Philly, we hauled out between
October 1st and 15th, and splashed starting after tax day. I have friends
from Maine who haul in September and splash for Memorial Day.

In North Carolina, we normally only haul every few years for a bottom job. A
typical haul out deal is haul, pressure wash, block, store for 2 weeks, and
launch for $x per foot. Longer term storage is month to month, with some
boats stored because it is less than slip rent, and some stored for long
term projects. The yard I use charges $7.50/ft for 1 2 week haul, and $6/ft
for monthly storage.

Now we do have a sort of a Haul out season here, but it is July to
November. Lots of boats come north from the Caribbean and points on the
East Coast in order to get above N36 degrees for hurricane season. I presume
there is a market for Hurricane Season haul outs further south as well.

It is with a bit of sadness that I put the for sale sign on Diversion. As one

Martin,

In the future you might try the cleaning product, Awesome which can be
purchase at the dollar store or dollar tree, one or both I'm not sure.
My wife swears by this stuff. Most recently I had the back of a Nikon N90
which had a rubberized coating that became very sticky to touch.
I attempted to remove the coating rubbing with rag soaked in acetone with no
success. Moving ahead several years I mentioned
the situation to my bride who took the camera back and disappeared for 10
minutes only to return with the coating gone.
She cleans everything with the stuff. The only restriction  is, do not clean
glass, it will etch glass. Will it work on Otter crap
better than Simple Green we don't know but it might. There is that west coast
air to considered.
