It's not only good karma, it's the way they do business. We bought in bulk
and managed to provide the museum with over $1k in revenue. I don't
begrudge a cent of that, even though I did bargain them down from full
price. ; )

facing extinction if the Federal Government doesn't change its mind and
hangs on to this historic piece of waterfront property, or if they don't
work more closely with the City of Kingston to help them acquire the land.
Otherwise it will be sold to private developers who will evict the Museum

Yes, please write your MPs, especially the Conservative ones. This is

Stus-List Wobble in stanchion bases on LF38

2015-01-19 Thread Robert Boyer via CnC-List
There are a total of 6 lifeline stanchions that seem to have undersized backing
plates on my LF38. The backing plates in these locations are actually two
1-inch by 2-inch aluminum plates. I have designed much heavier backing plates
and installed the first one. However, I've found out that the undersized
backing plates are only part of the wobble problem. The other part of the
problem is simply slop between the stanchion post and the hole in the stanchion
base.

I've thought about using a thickened epoxy on the inside of the stanchion base
and using an appropriate barrier on the stanchion post to prevent the epoxy
from adhering to the stainless steel stanchion post. It might also be possible
to use something like PTFE tape on the stanchion post to remove the slop.

My question is .. Has anyone on the list done this or something similar to get
rid of the wobble in the lifeline stanchions?

That might have been me. I spent an ungodly amount of time and money
trying to match the stain during my 'U-shaped Galley project'

http://www.wbryant.com/StellaBoat/Projects/galley/u_shape/usblues.htm

Later on, I just said the heck with it and took good teak or veneer and
put many coats of Minwax interior varnish on it. For a year or two it
didn't match, but it's odd how interior varnish ages. I honestly can't
tell the difference between the varnish work I did ten years ago and the
original 35 year old finish. The stuff I got all fussy about doesn't
match.

Just varnish it and go sailing.

2015-01-19 Thread Jim Watts via CnC-List
How much room is involved to fix the wobble? Microns or millimeters? If a
reasonable size, you could use a pourable urethane instead of epoxy, which
would be brittle. Something with a durometer of 50-60 would be pretty rigid
but still give some shock bounce. Check Smooth-on.com for more info on
miracle plastic stuff.

Re: Stus-List Teak stain?

2015-01-19 Thread Jim Watts via CnC-List
Well, I stained the steps and they look pretty good. A little darker than
the original, but nice tone. In future, I would go with half the amount of
Provincial, so 1:4:4. I think it will look fine in the boat and I don't
care if it matches because the woodwork in the boat is all over the place
already.

The stuff I got all fussy about doesn't match.

Just varnish it and go sailing.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for letting everyone know about this. As you might know, I serve on
the Board of Trustees of the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston,
and I was the co-curator of the New Age of Sail exhibit at the Museum last
year, one of the high points of which was inducting George Cuthbertson and
Bruce Kirby into the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame. Your attached piece by
Mr. Granatstein is quite accurate. The Marine Museum is facing extinction
if the Federal Government doesn't change its mind and hangs on to this
historic piece of waterfront property, or if they don't work more closely
with the City of Kingston to help them acquire the land. Otherwise it will
be sold to private developers who will evict the Museum to build more
condos. The Museum does not have enough money to finance a relocation,
even if a suitable location was available.

Yes, please write your MPs, especially the Conservative ones. This is very
serious stuff. The Museum holds the entire CC Collection of drawings, as
well as drawings from German and Milne, and many other prominent Canadian
Naval Architects and shipbuilders.

Re: Stus-List Torqing keel bolts

2015-01-19 Thread Dave Godwin via CnC-List
Burt,

I’m not sure what model CC you have but the bolts on my 37’ are two sizes,
with the smaller one (keel bolt) directly under the mast. I’m fairly certain
that two different torque values may be called for. I haven’t even measured
them yet but tomorrow I start building a cradle/support in advance of lifting
the hull off of the keel (and removing the rudder) prior to moving the the hull
into the shed for painting. I won’t be tightening the keel until sometime next
late spring but would be interested in what you find when re-torqueing yours if
you drop the keel.

Jake Brodersen (CC 35 MKIII) on the list has done this and he may be a good
source of info. I’ve seen the pictures of his keel and the forward bolt is
extremely long. Very, very long...

Good luck.

to be sure that 350 foot-pounds is the correct adjustment. Also, all my keel
bolts appear to be the same approximate size – very large. The nuts look like
one and three quarter inch or larger. There is one, however forward of the
mast step that is way smaller. Maybe three quarter inch. Not sure if that is
a keel bolt. It doesn’t look like one. It almost looks like it could be a
ground point but there are no bonding connections to it. It lines up over the
forward most part of the keel right in the center of the bottom of the hull.

Stus-List Fresh water flush of engine

2015-01-19 Thread Al Serrato via CnC-List
I have a 1981 '34 with a Yanmar 3GMD engine with seawater cooling. A mechanic
recommended that I install a t-valve for the raw water intake so I can flush
the engine with fresh water occasionally. The engine appears to be in good
condition and runs well in the two years I have owned the boat but I suspect
that it is the original, making it 33 years old.

While this makes sense, I'm wondering whether it's necessary at this point,
given the age of the engine. in other words, is the damage already do
Everything? Also, I'm wondering what the long term effect of seawater cooling
is and what failures or problems result from the seawater over long periods of
time. What is the likely useful life of a marine Yanmar diesel?

Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

Re: Stus-List Fresh water flush of engine

2015-01-19 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Salt can precipitate and plug coolant passages along with other gunk so a
good chemical cleaning might be in order from time to time. You could
probably get an idea how bad things are the next time you replace zincs or
check the thermostat. I've heard of using vinegar. Prestone and Peak make
products using sodium citrate (IIRC). Chemical cleaning is kinda risky but
so is a blown head gasket or warped heat because of blocked coolant
channels.

Walmart, Lowes and Home Depot all have the D shape EPDM gasket material
in their weatherstripping area. I think the brands are either Frost King
or MD Products (#01025).

Here's the Walmart link:

I use it on Touche's old aluminum frame ports. It works.

I've done a few deck peels. I use a vibrating saw to cut the skin. Cuts
a nice thin line. Makes replacing the peeled skin easier.

Remove all the bad core but leave a ledge of the original core around the
cut. This will make it easy to get the right elevation when you replace
the skin.

Re: Stus-List Torqing keel bolts

2015-01-19 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
The 3/4 inch one is still a keel bolt, and a ground point. The keel is
thinner there and probably has a sloping leading edge so that bolt is
smaller as there is less keel for it to be buried in.

You really do need to know the diameter of your keel bolts to answer the
question about torque value.

My boat has a total of 8 keel bolts, but in 4 different diameters, the
diameter depending on their location in the keel. The largest are even
larger that those on the torque chart, the smallest is 3/4.

The chart of keel bolt torques in on the CC Photo Album site at:

Re: Stus-List Torqing keel bolts

2015-01-19 Thread Martin DeYoung via CnC-List
Burt,

Your boat is listed as being built in 1974. Calypso is a 1970 build at
Bruckmann's custom yard so maybe a similar keel attachment philosophy.

Calypso has many very large keel bolt/nut combos. And several smaller (shaft
and nut) keel bolt combos. It also has a grounding/bonding bolt for a large
AWG wire between the mast and the mast step which is also connected to the keel.

The smaller keel bolts are often to either side of a larger keel bolt.
Calypso's keel is made up of an iron keel with a lead shoe that makes up more
than ½ of the underwater area. Combined keel weight is over 9,000lbs. Back in
1999 we cut out the lead/fairing material covering most of the large keel bolt
lower ends to inspect them for corrosion. The keel bolt ends were L or J
shaped and in very good condition. Some of the smaller bolts had the look of
being added after sailing trials to tighten up the connection of keel and
hull. Calypso is hull #1 of the 43 series and was rumored to be built in a bit
of a hurry to make the 1971 SORC in which it won its class. After the 71' SORC
the boat has been raced/sailed hard every year on the east coast, great lakes,
and now in the PNW with no significant keel issues.

Hopefully another cnc-lister has a hull similar to yours and is able to give
more definitive information.

That said, if I had the boat bucks, I'd love to own the new 30. What a hoot it

Re: Stus-List Port light Gaskets Material

2015-01-19 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
MD Products EPDM gaskets have lasted more than 12 years on either of my boats.
At Lowes it is something like $16 for a big roll - at least 25 feet.

The spline that house on the outside of the lens and holds it into the frame is
available from any glass shop that repairs aluminum storm doors. The spline is
about 50 cents a foot,

My boat has spent the last few off-seasons on the hard in Mexico. Last time
I was there one of the kids knocked one of the windows and it feel off. I
realized that all of the ports were in similar shape. The gaskets had
basically turned to dust in the Mexican heat.

I am up in Canada now but heading back down to the boat in a couple of
weeks. I boarded up one of the windows and brought the plastic window with
me to get it replaced. I measured the others.

Before I left the boat I read about replacing the gaskets. In the post
someone had linked to a supplier that produces the material for the gaskets
for the port lights, but I can't seem to find it now. If anyone could point
me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

Stus-List Dockage and fuel in Charleston

2015-01-19 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I'm helping to move a boat south today an am in the Georgetown, Sc area at the
moment. The owner is thinking about leaving the boat between Georgetown and
Hilton Head for about two weeks because of personal business.

Can anyone on the list identify an inexpensive location for dockage, and a good
source for diesel fuel?

We last filled the tanks in NN at $2.35 a gallon ($3.99 at the Charleston
Municipal Marina). Weekly dockage in Charleston seems to be around $13 per
foot. Ouch!

Suggestions greatly appreciated.

Re: Stus-List replacing balsa core

2015-01-19 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Yeah - not sure what they are referring to. I looked at the source for that
one page and absolutely nothing there. Suspect it is the domain and not my
pages that are at issue. Since many people have the local cable provider as
their internet provider and since website hosting is free to cable subscribers
and since all are users.eastling.ca/~username (the username is each
individual's site) I suspect that one bad page puts all sites hosted on that
provider on blacklist. Had same thing with sympatico email addresses here a
couple years ago and spam filters

Will look more closely at the files later

Is a pain - especially since these are static pages
