Stus-List Wobble in stanchion bases on LF38
There are a total of 6 lifeline stanchions that seem to have undersized backing plates on my LF38. The backing plates in these locations are actually two 1-inch by 2-inch aluminum plates. I have designed much heavier backing plates and installed the first one. However, I've found out that the undersized backing plates are only part of the wobble problem. The other part of the problem is simply slop between the stanchion post and the hole in the stanchion base. I've thought about using a thickened epoxy on the inside of the stanchion base and using an appropriate barrier on the stanchion post to prevent the epoxy from adhering to the stainless steel stanchion post. It might also be possible to use something like PTFE tape on the stanchion post to remove the slop. My question is .. Has anyone on the list done this or something similar to get rid of the wobble in the lifeline stanchions? Re: Stus-List Wobble in stanchion bases on LF38
How much room is involved to fix the wobble? Microns or millimeters? If a reasonable size, you could use a pourable urethane instead of epoxy, which would be brittle. Something with a durometer of 50-60 would be pretty rigid but still give some shock bounce. Check Smooth-on.com for more info on miracle plastic stuff. Re: Stus-List Torqing keel bolts
Burt, I’m not sure what model CC you have but the bolts on my 37’ are two sizes, with the smaller one (keel bolt) directly under the mast. I’m fairly certain that two different torque values may be called for. I haven’t even measured them yet but tomorrow I start building a cradle/support in advance of lifting the hull off of the keel (and removing the rudder) prior to moving the the hull into the shed for painting. I won’t be tightening the keel until sometime next late spring but would be interested in what you find when re-torqueing yours if you drop the keel. Jake Brodersen (CC 35 MKIII) on the list has done this and he may be a good source of info. I’ve seen the pictures of his keel and the forward bolt is extremely long. Very, very long... Good luck. Sorry for any duplication. I am in the process of procuring a three quarter drive torque wrench and sockets big enough to re-torque my keel bolts. Before I do this I just want to be sure that 350 foot-pounds is the correct adjustment. Also, all my keel bolts appear to be the same approximate size – very large. The nuts look like one and three quarter inch or larger. There is one, however forward of the mast step that is way smaller. Maybe three quarter inch. Not sure if that is a keel bolt. It doesn’t look like one. It almost looks like it could be a ground point but there are no bonding connections to it. It lines up over the forward most part of the keel right in the center of the bottom of the hull. ___ This List is provided by the CC Photo Album. Stus-List Fresh water flush of engine
I have a 1981 '34 with a Yanmar 3GMD engine with seawater cooling. A mechanic recommended that I install a t-valve for the raw water intake so I can flush the engine with fresh water occasionally. The engine appears to be in good condition and runs well in the two years I have owned the boat but I suspect that it is the original, making it 33 years old. While this makes sense, I'm wondering whether it's necessary at this point, given the age of the engine. in other words, is the damage already do Everything? Also, I'm wondering what the long term effect of seawater cooling is and what failures or problems result from the seawater over long periods of time. What is the likely useful life of a marine Yanmar diesel? Thanks for any advice or suggestions. Al Serrato Fidelity 1981 C C 34 San Francisco Bay ___ This List is provided by the CC Photo Album. Re: Stus-List Fresh water flush of engine
Salt can precipitate and plug coolant passages along with other gunk so a good chemical cleaning might be in order from time to time. You could probably get an idea how bad things are the next time you replace zincs or check the thermostat. I've heard of using vinegar. Prestone and Peak make products using sodium citrate (IIRC). Chemical cleaning is kinda risky but so is a blown head gasket or warped heat because of blocked coolant channels. I've done a few deck peels. I use a vibrating saw to cut the skin. Cuts a nice thin line. Makes replacing the peeled skin easier. Remove all the bad core but leave a ledge of the original core around the cut. This will make it easy to get the right elevation when you replace the skin. Dennis C. Re: Stus-List Torqing keel bolts
The 3/4 inch one is still a keel bolt, and a ground point. The keel is thinner there and probably has a sloping leading edge so that bolt is smaller as there is less keel for it to be buried in. You really do need to know the diameter of your keel bolts to answer the question about torque value. My boat has a total of 8 keel bolts, but in 4 different diameters, the diameter depending on their location in the keel. The largest are even larger that those on the torque chart, the smallest is 3/4. The chart of keel bolt torques in on the CC Photo Album site at: http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/doityourself/torquebolts/torquebolts.htm Ken H. Re: Stus-List Torqing keel bolts
Burt, Your boat is listed as being built in 1974. Calypso is a 1970 build at Bruckmann's custom yard so maybe a similar keel attachment philosophy. Calypso has many very large keel bolt/nut combos. And several smaller (shaft and nut) keel bolt combos. It also has a grounding/bonding bolt for a large AWG wire between the mast and the mast step which is also connected to the keel. The smaller keel bolts are often to either side of a larger keel bolt. Calypso's keel is made up of an iron keel with a lead shoe that makes up more than ½ of the underwater area. Combined keel weight is over 9,000lbs. Back in 1999 we cut out the lead/fairing material covering most of the large keel bolt lower ends to inspect them for corrosion. The keel bolt ends were L or J shaped and in very good condition. Some of the smaller bolts had the look of being added after sailing trials to tighten up the connection of keel and hull. Calypso is hull #1 of the 43 series and was rumored to be built in a bit of a hurry to make the 1971 SORC in which it won its class. After the 71' SORC the boat has been raced/sailed hard every year on the east coast, great lakes, and now in the PNW with no significant keel issues. Hopefully another cnc-lister has a hull similar to yours and is able to give more definitive information. Re: Stus-List CC 30 one design
My old 30-1 can do 6 in 15kt of wind. That's half and I pid a lot less than half of what the new 30 costs. That said, if I had the boat bucks, I'd love to own the new 30. What a hoot it would be to race it! I'd gladly stay in the nearby microtel instead of onboard. MD Products EPDM gaskets have lasted more than 12 years on either of my boats. At Lowes it is something like $16 for a big roll - at least 25 feet. Yeah - not sure what they are referring to. I looked at the source for that one page and absolutely nothing there. Suspect it is the domain and not my pages that are at issue. Since many people have the local cable provider as their internet provider and since website hosting is free to cable subscribers and since all are users.eastling.ca/~username (the username is each individual's site) I suspect that one bad page puts all sites hosted on that provider on blacklist.
