Re: Stus-List Water Tanks - now source for Kracor Tanks

2017-09-20 Thread bushmark4--- via CnC-List

I used their chart and found the tank which was identical to my existing tank
and called them; they quoted a price and I sent them a check; the tank arrived
via UPS in about 3-4 weeks;

I see that I did not specifically say it, but I called the 800 number listed in
the Kracor Catalog on Tuesday morning, and was told that they only manufacture
tanks for boat builders and that they had no dealer network. They suggested
that I call the manufacturer of my boat and order the tanks through them.

Not having an aftermarket sales network or providing support to owners of
existing product just seems so unbelievable that I had to ask the list if
anyone has actually ordered from Kracor.

Maybe they have two divisions and I am calling the wrong one? The Google search
sent me to something like Kracor Rotomolding Inc. And that is where I found the
catalog referenced below and got the phone number.

Richard, when you bought your replacement tank, how did you place the order?

Long story short: both of the water tanks on my 38 have cracks in the water
fill fitting. The tanks are mold number 5060, and model number 75330 (which I
presume indicates the location of the vent, fill, and drain fittings.

The cracks radiate out from the threaded fitting. The Kracor catalog says the
fitting is a 1 ½” straight thread, but my old tanks appear to be tapered pipe
thread. Maybe a product change over the past 40 years, but I used Forespar
elbows with straight thread when I replumbed the boat a couple of years ago.

I am exploring plastic welding to repair the fittings, but I’m not real hopeful
it will work. So today I called Kracor to explore buying two new tanks.

Kracor tells me they only do manufacturing of tanks for boat manufacturers,
suggested I call the manufacturer of my boat. No retail sales to individuals. I
explained that C was no longer in business, and asked if they could send me
to a dealer anywhere on the east coast. Was told they have no dealer network.

Help!

There have been a number of recommendations to buy a Kracor tank over the
years. Has anyone actually bought one? And if you have, where did you purchase
the tank?

Re: Stus-List Winter storage of mast

2017-09-20 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
The mast for my C 30 MK I is about 43’ and weighs probably 200+ pounds. Two
guys can lift it (when it’s horizontal) but not for very long and they can’t
move it very far.

When I bought the boat and moved it to my lake, we built some cradles for the
mast to lay above the deck and cabin top, on centerline, with the weight off
the pulpits (slightly visible at
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-NqAxQ6JxFTb294M1Z6N0UtV0U
).

Last offseason I pulled the mast out and laid it along the boat trailer’s frame
rail and a stack of blocks by the trailer’s tongue, in the boatyard. I moved
it there on a separate long flatbed trailer, and my crew and I lifted it off
the flatbed and laid it on the blocks.

This spring the flatbed wasn’t available, so we built some 2x4 trestles off the
starboard side of the boat trailer, U-bolted to the bunk supports, and
transported mast and boat to the gin pole at the same time. I have a 38’
trailer so we were able to do that with minimal overhang on each end.

This coming offseason I’ll pull the mast again, and transport it the same way
to the boatyard, and probably put it on blocks so it’s out of the way for hull
painting. Drainage is a good idea.

Cheers,
Randy Stafford

I too have a canister horn but I am having the mast refit this winter and
have already asked the yard to start specing out a howler and horn (I

Not a funny question. A horn handy to your reach could save you from a nasty

uncomfortable putting that much weight on the pulpits. Build a wooden
cradle that sits on the boat and braces off the toe rail. Probably need 4
or 5. Your mast is probably going to be close to 60' length so be careful
how much extends out the front and back. If you have no mast work to do
you'll probably be able to safely store it and the furler at the boat yard.

How are you getting the boat home?

Re: Stus-List Winter storage of mast

2017-09-20 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
Peter,

I am not sure about the pulpits, but many people store masts on the boat. I
would support it separately (i.e. on some supports, where the mast can be more
securely attached) and use a middle support, as well (somewhere around the
spreaders, probably resting on the mast step, unless your mast is keel stepped).

You may also want to raise it above the deck, so that you have access to the
cabin (and the cockpit) during the winter.

If you have a winter cover that does not use the mast as support, you may want
to take it off the boat and support it on three sawhorses.

Make sure that you support the furler properly, especially the drum, as the
furler is longer than the mast (again, unless you have a keel stepped mast). I
use a length of a 2x3 that goes into the mast and extends about 1 m, to which i
tie the furler drum.

Hello all

I have a c 40 1983 w roller furler harken and I am wondering if anyone
brings their mast home on the pulpits for storage or is that not recommended

I have so much work to do on the boat for the winter I would prefer having it
at the house.

Thanks

Stus-List Fuel Tank Replacement

2017-09-20 Thread robert via CnC-List

John:

Timely and relevant information from my perspective. My fuel tank is a
33 year old aluminum and it has a dedicated fuel return fitting. I
looked at the Moeller plastic fuel tanks and decided against it, not for
the fire safety reason (actually didn't know and/or think about it now
that you bring it up). The fittings on the Moeller are all quite
different from my existing tank.

I called a 'machine shop' here and discussed the fuel tankthey will
clean, inspect, pressure test, repair, etc. if a repair is needed and
can be done. Failing that, they will make me a new tank to the
identical dimensions and fittings of my existing tank for approx. $400.
Whether it is the existing tank or new tank, they recommend putting a
'plastic or similar material' liner on the bottom of the tank where it
sits on the wooden platform to protect the tank from corrosion.

Either way, I like the idea that when I reinstall a fuel tank, it will
fit, but more importantly, if it turns out to be a new tank, I will not
have to adapt the fittings (horizontal infill, fuel line to engine, fuel
return fitting, etc.) It may cost more than a new plastic tank,
however, extra cost is worth the ease of installation for me.

This list is great..really helpful when you don't know, and in this
case, helpful to confirm your decision(s) were the right one(s) after
the fact.

with an attendant impact on a survey if the boat is sold. He
recommends only a new metal tank that can withstand a fire in the
engine compartment without melting and spilling fuel. The plastic
tanks are good for more open applications and should be used in a
sailboat only if the tank area is separated / isolated from the engine
area. Further, the Moeller does not have a dedicated fuel return
fitting which is required for diesels so the only alternative is to
“tee” into the vent line a less than ideal solution.

On another note, on inspection to remove the tank on a 34 appears to
be a really tight fit around the engine and water heater. Has any 34
owner actually removed their tank and care to share any tidbits of
advice??

John,
On the fuel return, Moeller does have a fuel level sending unit that is an
option if you need a fuel return. It has a built in fuel return and is drop in
replacement for standard fuel sending unit. I am not affiliated with Moeller.

John,
Moeller tanks meet all USCG regs and ABYC, and more. Fire retardency is in
the specs. Hose and hose clamps are also a place to be careful, as hose
ratings vary widely and wrong hose can take you out of compliance quickly.
I am not an expert, but having done some research before recently(in
progress) replacing my metal tank with a Moeller and using only A1 rated hose
for all lines including vent, I am comfortable that I am in full compliance and
am safe

And if you have, where did you purchase
the tank?
