Stus-List Re: Hull painting

2023-08-22 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
Hi Richard, 1st, I'm sorry for the ordeal you're going through.  I had a similar episode a few years ago.  I haven't heard anything about iron but, awlgrip is repairable.  Certain colors are more difficult to blend but, I've never heard anyone say awgrip couldn't be repaired.  There is also awlcraft 2000 which is supposed to be easier to repair.  When I had Rum Runner painted we went with awgrip on the top sides and awlcraft 2000 for the deck and mast.  I was very happy with the results. As far as color, flag blue is always stunning.  We went with stars and stripes blue on Rum Runner.  It's a beautiful color but, it's one that's hard to blend.  However, there were some repairs done to that and, it wasn't that bad to my eye.  Awlgrip is a really tough finish.  I'm not sure if I'd go for something else given awlgrip's history and reputation.  UNLESS, there was a huge cost savings in the product and they could point me to happy customers with the iron.Best of luck! DannyOn Aug 22, 2023 12:51 AM, Richard Bush via CnC-List wrote:Hi all, we are in the midst of trying to repair  damages to our hull (1985 C 37 CB) which stemmed from another boat parting its dock line in a storm and laying against our hull for 2+ hours, tearing the paint and gelcoat from the waterline to the rub rail. It's a long tale of woe, however, we are nearing the part of our project where painting the hull topsides is being discussed.  The boat was painted with Awlgrip about 10 years ago (prior to our ownership), and that finish has held up well. Also, because of the paint being 10 years old, it has been "strongly recommended" that the entire hull be repainted, rather than the damaged area only, with which we agree. I "assumed" that we would go back with the same Awlgrip product, however, the repair people have suggested that Imron would be a better product because scratches and dings can be repaired more easily.  They advised that the old Awlgrip would be sanded off and the a base coat and clear coating over the color coat.  Does anyone on the list have any experience with Imron paints (marine, of course); or Imron vs Awlgrip: Another qualifier is that our area (Ohio River) is not a big boating community and there are few boating repair facilities here; (getting the boat to the repair facility is a whole other story all by itself!) One last point, is, color; our hull is the C factory white, don;t know the name, but its an off-white almost cream color; we are thinking of going back with flag blue or navy blue; any thoughts here are welcome as well. As always, thank you and let me know if you have any questions!Richard1985 C 37 CB; Ohio River, Mile 584;Richard N. Stus-List Re: To sell or not to sell

2023-03-27 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
You can always list it and see what happens.   If it didn't sell in a predetermined period of time, have it shipped.   If you know a broker, they could run comps on sold boats for you.  That way you'll have a better idea of your boat's worth.   I think the updates and upgrades certainty make your boat more appealing but, probably doesn't add too much to the price.   Good luck! DannyOn Mar 27, 2023 6:05 PM, Thomas Perison via CnC-List wrote:Greetings all -

Stus-List Re: Boats to avoid; formerly- Boatless again

2023-02-23 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
I'm not sure there is much research that went into this comment. Most of the
boats you listed have been around for decades and some are amazingly designed
and of high quality construction. I think Andy was talking more about the
triangular shaped, (in plan) modern boats that are almost catamaran-like.
These boats are, lightweight, flat bottomed boats, with a hard chine on each
side, In essence, creating 2 hulls, one for each tack. However, the interior
vary, Moody's interior are very traditional, with plenty of wood, curved
corners and plenty of hand holds. The older Hylas, oyster, Holland boats, I'm
looking at are pretty traditional. One is even designed by Sparkman and
Stevens. This will be our 4th sail boat, hence, our 4th shopping experience,
and one thing I can say with certainty, is there are plenty of surprises in
boat shopping. You simply can't make these sweeping generalizations with any
degree of certainty. There are some beautifully fitted out Bavaria's from the
late 90s early 2000s. The boat shows simply can't be a real gauge of the used
boat market. Hell, Catalina actually produced an amazingly well build 38
footer that was designed by Sparkman and Stevens with plywood cored decks and
solid fiberglass hull. Making an argument as to why you're hanging onto your
boat is great. But to dismiss quality brans, wholesale like that, is just not
helpful banter. Thanks for the input, though. Danny

what to avoid, he said..."... Im just not a fan of that ilk. Plus the

Andy, thank you, thank you; I have long felt that way, and it is nice to hear

That is a major reason I have held on to my C 37; boats that can provide
what it provides are going to cost 10 times what I have in my boat and don't

Stus-List Boatless again

2023-02-22 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
Hi guys, So, We sold Rum Runner IV and we're going to start the process for our
next boat.I'm not really sure who said that selling a boat is typically a happy
day for a boater. This is our 3rd sailboat sold, and we've been sad to see
each of them go.We'd been discussing going to something a bit more modern, with
more room. So, as the boat was in really great condition, I thought I would
list it and see if anyone was interested. I've bee eyeing center cockpit
designs. Some of our desired features are,about 45 - 50 feet,at least a sugar
scoop transom if not walk thru, larger cockpit (as most of our time, on board,
is spent there)lighter, brighter interior,a good sized head with separate
showera nice master suite with an island berth Anyway, if anyone knows of any
vessels we might want to check out, let me know! DannyPlease show your appreciation for this list and the Photo Album site and help

Got a question for the shallow water sailors like those in Chesapeake Bay.

I'm thinking whether to buy TowBoatUS for peace of mind this coming season.  I've owned my boat for twenty years and though I do run aground a few times each year, I always get off faily easily by backing out or spinning the keel free.    My batteries are older and I might need a jump start after anchoring out.  I keep a jumpstarter aboard for that situation and can easily check the charge.

Are there any benefits I am missing that the membership provides?  TowBoatUS requires thirty days before benefits are effective, so February looks a good time to join if I do.

Kind of a side note to this.  An owner of the company he works for bought a completely renovated Hinkley 60 in Florida.  He left Florida in it to bring it back to New England and it sank 100 miles off shore.   Insurance said he shouldn't have been more that 40 miles of shore and they aren't covering the loss.   I saw the listing for the boat and the coat guard coverage of the rescue.  The boat listed fur just under $1,000,000!They are fighting it.   As was already stated, read the policy (and replace your standing rigging!).DannyOn Jan 3, 2023 10:32 AM, Joel Aronson via CnC-List wrote:Happy New Year!I've been looking for insurance to cover our boat in the Caribbean and Med.READ THE POLICY BEFORE YOU BUY!I got what I thought was a good quote through a British broker until I read that the value of the mast decreased by 5% per year - i.e. a 20 year old mast was not insured.  JoelRule One Hylas 49Former owner The Office C 35/3

I had the fish shaped zinc and found the wire corrodes and breaks
off right above the zinc.

For the past 10+ years have been getting shaft zincs from Boatzincs.com which
are milspec. They are more expensive than other sources for zincs, but after
getting some pink fire of de-zincification on an old prop
switched to Boat Zincs. They also seem to last longer than the cheaper ones
from Defender [from China] or WM.

https://www.boatzincs.com/hanging_anode_zinc.htmlAlso more expensive, but
considerably less than a new prop

Just make certain whatever you clip a hanging zinc to is well grounded to the
boat.

The companionway on my Tartan is similar in the way the hatch slides into a
hood. But mine is made of fiberglass. What I did add was an acrylic tape for
the hatch to slide on. I'ts working great and holding up well after 2 seasons.
I got it on Amazon and it was a recommendation from Tim Jacket over at Tartan.
It appears to be out of stock on Amazon, unfortunately. But this is what I
used. Maybe you could find some elsewhere.

Good day all.I must be looking for things to do because I'm pondering how I
might improve the companionway hatch. The acrylic is crazed and requires
replacement, and I've also noticed some of the turtle (fiberglass
cover/housing) screws had loosened. I've disassembled it, and documented it
on the blog, follow the link below. There's a bit of dirt under there but
everything appears to be in good shape.
I've detected no issues however I do wonder if it ought to have drainage holes
other than into the cockpit.
It appears to have had some sealant (butyl?) installed between the turtle and
coachroof, however it was certainly not sealed. Perhaps it should not be
sealed to the cabin top at all?
Though there is no indication of water ingress, I will drill out, epoxy-fill,
and redrill the mounting holes.
The teak rails and stop block appear to be in excellent shape.
The exposed teak is in good shape however it is subject to weathering and is
not easy to remove for maintenance.
Has anyone else gone down this rabbit hole, and if so what improvements are
worth making? Thanks, Dave33-2

Touche's slip is on Bayou Castine on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain.
Fairly tropical most of the year. Monday I went for a nice sail on the lake.
Well, nice if you don't count the biting flies and love bugs. If you don't
know about love bugs, Google them. They're disgusting creatures whose only
natural enemies are Kenworths and Peterbilts. They occur in spring and late
summer. Just out of my slip I saw a 5-7 foot alligator then another about 8-9
feet. The bayou has developed a prolific growth of water weeds. As I came to
a tight spot in the bayou, the weeds forced Touche' and a Catalina 34 to pass
close aboard in a narrow section of the bayou. When I returned to the slip, the
weather was deteriorating and I wanted to get Touche' tied up before the storm
hit. Oh, crap! A large island of weeds had drifted across the entrance to
Touche's slip. I tried to back up to it, grab it with a boat hook and move it
out of the way. No luck. The storm was approaching fast so I just powered
into the slip bow first pushing the weeds in with me. The island of weeds
wrapped around the bow and keel. I normally back in. The dock lines worked
and Touche' was safely tied up when the storm hit. It was raining hard and I
was reluctant to get wet to retrieve the shore power cord to fire up the air
conditioning. All that was missing was for The Rock to show up in his Jungle
Cruise costume. During the storm, I sweated and pondered how to clear the
weeds. Fortunately, the storm killed any wind. I backed out of the slip,
motored around to the far side of my pier, tied Touche's stern to the pier and
used the propwash to blow the weeds out of the slip and into the bayou. I
could then pull back around the pier and back into the slip normally. The
harbormaster said he'd contacted Wildlife and Fisheries to come spray the
weeds. Estimated 2-3 weeks. What joy! Here's pictures:

Why not just get a solar panel and some AGM batteries? Lithium requires new charger, AGM profile for charging is often available on legacy chargers.

I've switched to awlwood.  It does not have the same yellowing tendency as varnish and it looks really great!   You can hot coat it after the primer is cured.  It is very expensive, however. DannyOn Jun 18, 2022 2:09 PM, Matthew via CnC-List wrote:Listers: I know this topic has been covered before, so please forgive my ignorance.  Although I don’t ordinarily varnish my interior teak ply, I plan to do so around the companionway to protect against water.  I’ll likely use a satin finish.  What type/brand of varnish would you recommend? I went there a few years ago. I was looking to replace my 6 Hatches. I was
able to get a bigger discount directly from Lewmar because of the large order.
So, going there could be beneficial from a negotiation standpoint. It is
always mobbed though. I'm not sure if current events will have any impact on
how they handle consumer traffic within the building. I did enjoy myself
whenever I've gone there. It's kind of like a boat show without the boats
(well, there is always the inflatables!)

Thanks John. Any sense on the level of discount, or is it by item?

In past events it seemed a 10% off most everything, in store and online, other
than the special sale items they had in different areas. Bottom paint is the
biggest ticket item on my list.

All,

For the local sale they do seem to have some decent discounts that should carry
over the online sale next week.

My suggestion is, if you have an online account, put things in your basket now
or at least know what the $$ is for your items before the sale and then see how
much the pricing changes when the sale starts on the 27th. Good luck!

Stus-List Re: bottom wash

2021-09-30 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
I was just about to ask that very question. If cleaning in the water would be
as good or better than power washing. My bottom paint is laid up in 3 coats.
two coats of blue and the final coat in black. This allows me to simply touch
up the bottom rather than building up the coats as many do. Well, a couple of
years ago, I got an over zealous power wash guy that took the entire 3rd coat
off. He must have like seeing it turn blue or something... So I was wondering
if I might just get it cleaned by a diver before haul out

The only time I have ever skipped pressure washing upon haul out was this last
time. I only skipped it because the diver had just cleaned it and it was an
unscheduled haul out to repair hurricane damage. Was getting bottom paint and
my painter said it would be good enough without the power wash.--

running the bilge pump all week. I put the panels back up and I'm getting the
voltage out of them but the victron is not charging the batteries.  Would this
be an indication that the batteries charge has gotten too low and that the

Dave,

It's a DIY job for many. Just depends on your level of confidence. It's
fairly straightforward. The broken strand(s) may be at a sharp turn.

Here's the link to Touche's complete steering system rebuild and upgrade.
You might find some wisdom and/or encouragement in there.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/115qLR3c13N2THCRpsOF-7UGGJBweFXfd/view?usp=sharing

I found a broken strand. I also removed the pedestal. However, I removed
it to paint it. For your situation, you shouldn't have to remove the
pedestal.

Hey Edd--I love the boat you are selling--unfortunately when I bought my 36
XL/kcb a new 37/40 kcb was out of my financial reach!! Mine is a slightly
smaller version of the 37/40 and has a very similar centerboard arrangement.
Since I do mostly club racing in the relatively thin NC sounds/rivers, I would
never consider glassing in the board(maybe if I stopped racing) although I know
of others with C who have done this for the reasons you mention. I also
agree that since both boats have a massive cb trunk (mine is about 4700 lbs),
it sails pretty well with the board (~925 lbs) up or even glassed in. OTOH,
when I put my board down from 4.5 ft to 7.25 ft, she straightens right up and
sails to weather at least 5 degrees closer to the wind--and if I and the crew
are on our game, we are very seldom beaten to the weather mark in most breezes
above 8 knots by any boat in our size/PHRF handicap range. Downwind, kite or
not, we grind the board up (not easy or quick) and with decent spinnaker work
or just flying a genoa with a whisker pole, again we are seldom passed
(although we don't gain much either!). As you know, the cb trunk is both
massive in length, weight and width so it adds significant wetted surface
compared to a skinny (and deep) fin keel. I agree that there is some
drag/turbulence from the cb slot but both our boards have an elliptical shape
so that no matter how far the board is extended, it fully 'fills' the slot--as
opposed to many cb boats with more or less rectangular boards that do not fill
the slot with the board as the cb is dropped. Since I haul her yearly for new
bottom paint, and have the cb pennant replaced at ~5 year intervals, my added
expense with the board is minimal. However, the yard must always do the board
painting while it is hanging in travel lift--they have an aversion to having
the board fully down, and the boat very high on jack stands! And most yards do
not like to dig a hole so that the board can be extended either! Good luck with
your next boat! Charlie NelsonWater Phantom1995 C 36 XL/kcb

Joel, We sealed the board in and glassed the bottom, so shes the
worlds only shoal-draft model. 4.9 feet of draft and we saw no change
in performance. In fact, without the slot and drag, the boat actually sailed
faster in anything under 10 knots of breeze and the same up to the 15-knot
range. And, no headache of thousands of dollars of maintenance every several
years (board maintenance requires a haul-out and time in the travel lift.) See:

If you really want to restore the board, any competent yard could do it. But,
seriously, she sails better with it sealed in. All the best, Edd Edd M.

Hi guys! Thanks for the replies!

I have not tried openCPN. where do I find that?

I'm not sure of the exact model but out has the 3g capability. It's 11 inches
and probably 7 years old - ish.

I'm in the boat now and left it at home so I can't check. I will look further
into when I get back.

Taking my boat back to home port, in mattapoisett, after nearly 2 years on the
hard in Barrington, RI

She looks stunning!

Stus-List Re: Question??

2021-06-15 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
I know! that's ridiculous! If this is true, why would anyone want a Yanmar
engine? He should have contacted Tartan directly. I've had so much help from
them over the last 5 years owning my Tartan 40 and it's 36 years old. I can't
imagine that they would not have had a reasonable solution for him. Maybe a
connection to a local Mech that would have taken on the repair? They've
actually helped a situation when the local yard was doing their best chicken
little impression saying "this is NEVER going to work, it will jeopardize your
safety..." Tartan stepped in and cooled all heads. They wrote a letter on
company letterhead to confirm that not only was the condition safe but they had
numerous boat out on the water with the exact same setup and were still using
the same setup on new boats! Sometimes, I think, locally, all the guys in the
trade know each other and they all speak to one another and they all back each
other up. I've been on the receiving end of that situation too. You have to
go outside your local environment for a true 2nd opinion. I'm lucky enough to
have a company still in business and more than willing to keep their older
boats up of to snuff! I would imagine with such a new model, they'd have been
more than willing to help out. The last thing they want is that type of story
getting out that their putting in engines that can't be repaired... Or, maybe
your friend just didn't want to wait for a repair and the engine swap was
faster? I bet he could still reach out to tartan and get that thing fixed
right up. Worst case scenario, he could ship it to them and have it repaired
by them. Imagine having a spare engine laying around for a swap out if another
repair is needed (if they are identical). I know a guy with a Viking 33 that
has a completely rebuilt and pristine atomic 4 in his garage for that very
purpose! He says he can swap out the engine and dial it in within a day. Danny

There are 68 Kanzaki transmissions listed on eBay right now. Perhaps one will
work. There are also sites that sell used and rebuilt trannies. I find it
hard to believe he needs a new tranny AND engine. --

That's a great deal, but mine are 3.5" x 7/16" wide. A guy at our club has
found me some in nylon that should work. Not as good as Delrin, but they should
do. Acetal/Delrin material is crazy expensive around here... was going to be

Stus-List Re: Even More Atomic 4 Troubles

2021-04-13 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
Hi Lee, To my ear, the 2nd video is a normal sounding A4. They sound like a
sewing machines. The first time I heard mine run, I had the same reaction. The
first video, sounds like a normal A4 but there seem to be some kind of movement
of some kind. My first thought was that it was in gear and the prop was
spinning maybe. However, as someone mentioned, that could have been a loose or
aging engine mount. I didn't notice any engine movement though. The coils on
the A4 can be a bit delicate and crack when they over heat. That could also be
the source of difficult starting. Especially, if it started easier cold and
got more difficult when it was warmed up. I kept a spare coil, spare carb and
spare fuel pump on board because these were always causing me trouble. Well,
not the fuel pump really but, I figured it was good insurance. I would try to
swap out the coil if I had an overheat. As has been mentioned, these are very
durable engines and don't die easily. Danny

3 things you need for an internal combustion engine to run.
SparkCompressionFuel. Check for spark at the plugsUsually , when I had trouble
with my atomic 4, on my previous boat, it was usually the carburetor.  I had 3
and kept 1 rebuilt on board, 1 at home either awaiting rebuild or rebuilt, and
would swap them out.  The ethanol fuel would screw the carb up constantly...I
also had a nagging problem with the wiring harnessAnother issue was making sure
the timing was good but, it would usually fire even if it was off a little.  Do
you have the mechanical fuel pump or the electric?  Has it been converted to
electronic ignition?  Thanks, Danny

Stus-List Re: water tanks interconnected, or not?

2021-03-24 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
Hi Peter, Something is preventing the free flow of water from one of the tanks.
It could be; - a clog in the hose from the tank to the tee, - maybe a valve,
somewhere in that line that is closed, - it could be the vent is plugged solid,
creating a vacuum. Which does not allow the water to flow. Given that there is
very little head pressure to overcome the vacuum, it wouldn't necessarily take
too much of a plug on either side to stop the water flow. Danny

My 38 also has a tank under the port and starboard settees. Each of the tanks
has a shutoff valve at the outlet. The two drain hoses meet at a T under the
floorboards, and from this T is the line to the pressure pump.

Curiously, there is also a shutoff valve on each side of the T. I could see no
good purpose for the second shutoff in each supply line (unless it was there to
stop all the water from leaking out through a broken line), so I left them in
place when I replaced the hoses a while back.

Maybe you have an arrangement like this one?

I have a 30gal water tank under both settees. The valves for each are set to
open flow. However, the pump seems to draw only from the starboard side.
Id assumed that with both valves open, the tanks would equalize, but the
stbd tank empties and the pump goes dry, while the port tank remains full. Can
someone venture to whats going on? Ive read this 2015 discussion,
but the OP then was interested in disconnecting the two tanks. Ill do
some exploring tomorrow to see what might be preventing the tanks from
equalizing. Ideas are welcome.

Stus-List Mast Base Blocks

2021-03-19 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
Hello Again, So, I'm considering replacing all the blocks for the mast base. I
currently have 3 for halyards, 1 for mainsheet, 1 for boom furling line and 1
for center board. I'm was considering Schafer stainless because they look great
but, I'm now thinking, some kind of plastics would be better for when they fall
against the new paint. I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations about
brands, quality vs cost, etc... All my existing blocks are pretty old and I'm
sure, aren't as friction free as they should be. I've kept the old deck
organizers and I'm planning on replacing the sheaves. I've got the new mast
sheaves on the way. I ordered them From Zephyrworks. I may have them do the
deck organizer Sheaves too. He said he could rebuild any block too. I think
I'm going to have him rebuild the 1 Schaefer exit block I needs to be replaced.

I had already done all of my standing rigging and having the same done to my

as, one of them had a crack. 36 year old aluminum, I figured it was best to
replace rather than repair. I may do the upper spreaders next year. I Already
went with hella spreader lights, they have a red or white light option, and the
Lunasea tricolor/strobe/anchor for top of the mast. The final light,
masthead/deck, Its looking like I'll go with the Marine beam! Thanks Josh! Danny

The yard used awlgrip 2000, pearl gray if I recall correctly. Stripped all
hardware and wiring, welded shut vestigial holes, ground them flat and then
primed and painted. Re-wired, refitted, replaced all rod rigging. Here is the

project.https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=1eSqX7wZP1r77hD84wDmGAQSI0Tqbn9xm
I pretty sure the next question is going to be "how much?" ~1k for each rod
and hardware. I have 4 shrouds on each side plus head and back. 10 total ~3k
for the paint job alone All said and done it came to roughly 20k Josh Muckley

Stus-List Re: Precision Sails

2021-03-16 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
I got my headsail From Precision. I'm very happy with the communication and
work that they did. In fact, I brought my sail in for storage and inspection
to the Quantum Loft near by and he even said it was well built sail. He
wanted to trash it but as we opened up on the loft floor he kept point to the
good work they did and in the end said "it's a nice sail" I would go with them
again if they gave me a good price. Although, I got a nice quote from Neil
Pryde on my main, they're only abut an hour away. Turned out I didn't need a
new main. My existing sail is a Neil Pryde so, I sent it to him to have a look
and he sent it back repaired saying I would get another 5 to 7 years out of it
no problem. His price to replace was nearly half what Quantum wanted for the
same specifications. I think part of that was that he still had the pattern
from when he built the first one so, there was no design time involved. But
still, half? I went back to quantum and he tried to say that the sail would be
inferior and he'd like to see the quote to compare. So, I sent him the quote
and he never responded. Which is sad seeing I'd given him nearly all my
business over the years. with the exception of the Precision sail. Danny

Dont put a battery up there. That is a lot of weight in the wrong place

Stus-List Re: Deck painting

2021-02-26 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
On mine, they took the gelcoat texture right down. They said it was the only
way to guarantee good adhesion. The deck was painted during the POs tenure by
roll and tip method and they tried to just scotch pad it, prime and finish but,
you could see where the paint was lifting in the lows of the non skid areas.
It wasn't bad, you could just see the primer in those areas and they were small
and uniform. So, the non skid just appeared to be a different shade of white.
Eventually, the whole paintjob was failing. I'd say it lasted 10 to 12 years
though. Of course, the downside is that it made the next paintjob (this one) a
lot more difficult...

This brings up a question I've been wondering about: How does one effectively
sand non-skid portions of the deck? I can't see how the sandpaper would get
into the stipled surface. Or is there an alternative to sandpaper that I'm not
aware of?I can scrub with soapy water and power wash, but it seems like sanding
would only knock the tops off the non-skid. What gives the "bite" for the
paint to hold in the depressed parts?RonWild CheriC 30-1STL On Friday,

Hi Bob, I just had my decks painted this year.  They painted each part
separately.   Stripped and sanded everything down.  Then masked off the non
skid areas to prime and finish the smooth areas before masking off the newly
finished areas and addressing the non skid. I think they felt adhesion would be
better for each area to have a good base to prime and then the finish to go
right on the primer.  I'm  sure cost was part of it too.  Why pay for a
finished coat you'd just have to sand, again, and paint over anyway?  Good
paint ain't cheap and the extra labor to sand a nice new fished paint job is
not very efficient. Thanks, Danny

threads where people chronicled their rebuild in their basement! I would

I'd like to share something most of you know but some may not and it's
something I learned the hard way.  Before hoisting sails for the first time
this season, check that all your blocks and deck organizer sheaves turn
properly and the sail tracks are clean.   Use a finger to check that the sheave
turns freely in each block.  Things work easier if everything actually works,
and if you do this the sails will thank you.

Earlier I reported that I raise the mainsail on my 36 ft saiboat by hand.
Well I couldn't do that when I first got my boat and needed to use a winch on
halyards.  My sailing friends told me that was normal and winches were always
necessary to hoist such large  sails.  My mainsail weighs only 55 to 60 pounds,
so I thought they might be wrong.  Later, I spent some time checking all of the
mast base halyard blocks and freeing a few frozen sheaves in the deck
organizer, I found I could raise the mainsail by hand very easily.  These
sheaves are deceptive when frozen and allow a halyard to pass unimpeded
initially when there is no load, but once the strain comes on, if they are
frozen, the halyard becomes bar taught and the job requires a winch.  I also
learned from reading the winch catalog that the largest loads; the genoa and
main halyards work best if reeved along the most direct path to the right side
of a winch drum.  So now I pick the clutch directly in line with the right side
of the Starboard winch drum for my main halyard.  All my winch drums turn
clockwise.  My genoa halyard is reeved through the clutch directly in line with
the right side of the Port winch drum.   I run the spinnaker halyards through
the outermost clutches and all the other lines have lower loads so can be run
as you like.  And I label the clutches.

I also hoist the Genoa by hand onto the furler and because I clean the foil
grooves and spray the sail tabbing with MackLube, it goes up pretty easily.
The lube also allows easy adjustment of the halyard tension when shaping the
sail while sailing.  I usually pick a lightwind day and extend the genoa
halyard so I can wrap the tail round the winch drum and lead it to the bow
where I feed the sail into the groove as I pull the halyard.  I can clear any
snags as they develop and the sail goes up happy and quick.

So clean and lube your winches and the clutches too.

Mark your halyards so you can repeat proper settings.

These things make operating the boat so much easier.

   Sorry for the long rant.

John and MaryAnn, You've got Neil Pryde Sails In CT. I think Stratford. Great
loft! Bob actually talked me out of buying a new sail and re-stitched mine.
Said "you're good for another 8 or 9 years with this sail. They also priced a
new sail with identical specs to Quantum at about 60% of the cost. This might
have been because he still had the design file from the 1st sail though. I had
bought most of my sails from Thurston. I told him about NP price and at first
he went on about the quality. So, I told him it might be because they still
had the design all done and said, "Let me send you the quote." He said, that
would be good to know to compare the 2. I never heard from him again... I met
Bob, at a boat show. He spent time chatting with us there about our sail. He
remembered my boat from the PO's work and said. I can't believe that sail
needs replacing. He was right. Its 3 years later and the sail is still
great!! I'd give them a call! Danny

+1 on the Doyle choice. Our Doyle loft in Dartmouth, MA just went under after
over 40 years in the biz which is leaving a big hole in the local sailing
community. Yes weve got both North and Quantum if you want to go to
Bristol or Portsmouth, RI, but there was nothing better than dropping off a
spinnaker that you managed to rip on Wednesday night beer can race and
theyd have it for you to pick up on Saturday morning before the weekend
regatta.
Keep it local if you can and although were sailors and cheap by nature
(the wind is free and everything else should be too, right?) the local loft
cant stay in business if they are being asked to price match an Asian
made product offered by a big conglomerate company. Just my .02

I would go with Doyle. Nothing beats having a local sailmaker to come out and
measure and adjust after the sails are on you may need to have a
spreader patch moved, add tell tales, whatever. Local is best.

Totally agree - it is a great upgrade. I installed one 8 years ago, and
reviewed it for Good Old Boat magazine. Easy to install, and I'm totally happy
with it 8 years later. I like that the plug has a double positive lock into
the socket - the side tabs engage first, and then when you lower the outlet
cover back down it locks it again. Nice fat blades on the connections.

Stus-List Re: Painting topside(less non-skid)

2020-10-09 Thread Danny Haughey
The Viking 33 we used to own had the top sides rolled and tipped before I
bought it.  It would pass a 5 ft test.  While we owned the boat I had the yard
paint the boot stripes and they came out beautiful rolled and tipped!  Again,
wouod pass the 5 ft test. David Rische rolled and tipped his boot stripes a
couple of seasons ago and they came out great too!   That was a bright white
against a dark blue hull. The deck on our current boat was rolled and tipped
with a 2 part paint about 8 years before i bought it and it passed a 2 ft test!
Looked really great.  In fact a very seasoned sailor came aboard with his wife
and the wife commented how good the decks looked.   The husband said, "it's a
tartan they're just that great, they stay looking good."  I then had to tell
him that they were painted.   However, that paint job is now failing.   It
started to lift and peel off after about 12 or 13 years.   I've had the whole
thing stripped, prepped and sprayed with awlgrip 2000.  This was because the
decks took some abrasion damage due to a neighboring boat breaking of its
mooring during a storm,  hitting my boat, hooking my anchor with its bow rail
and paying out 100 ft of chain across the deck.  I'm in an insurance battle...
do not use geico marine insurance. I think it's really about the prep and
getting your technique down.   If you have the time and the patience, it can be
beautiful right up close. Thanks, Danny

Stus-List Re: Potential "Next" Boat - Keel Issue ?'s

2020-09-28 Thread Danny Haughey
I had a smile like that on my Viking 33. I had the yard patch it up, when they
blasted all the old paint off, and it never reappeared during my ownership of 5
years. The repair was not at all expensive as I recall. You'd still do well
with a good survey if you really wanted to buy the boat. Are there any signs of
a grounding/? Were you able to check the bilge? This is a pretty common
occurrence I believe.

Subject: Stus-List Potential "Next" Boat - Keel Issue ?'s
Date: Mon, 28 Sep 2020 16:47:35 -0400

I looked at a boat yesterday that seemed like a good contender for a
next boat, right up until just prior to leaving I looked more
closely at the keel and found something that does not look particularly good.
I am hoping for some sage advice from the list, as in a) walk away, or b) might
be repaired, and if so what would be entailed and is it worth it. This would
have to be on the current owners tab, or a very hefty discount in the
price.

I tried to attach low res pics but that exceeded the list max message size, so
here is a link I hope works:
https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNHJ22k8kS3ukfBzXz67enViRMDw3GAOASwiS49uupKViTIDFeNzLj1LE_pav81Yw?key=QkR1X0FXWlgyclBzY1JYcUtIckRJRGh3dzIyMURR

The keel has a fairly significant crack extending at least 18 aft from
the leading edge. [The bottom was recently painted and I did not try to follow
it further aft.] That gap [in the attached photos] is at least 3/8 on
the horizontal axis and about on the vertical. The trailing
edge has some cracks which are not overly visible, again due to the bottom
paint. Unfortunately I did not look closely at / around the keel bolts, nor do
I have any internal photos, as I noticed this after the boat was closed up.
The boat is 4 hours away so getting more photos is not feasible.

To my untrained eye it appears there was a hard grounding and the keel almost
seems to have shifted aft in addition to down, based on the angle of the line
from the fairing of the hull down to the leading edge of the keel. But there
does not appear to be any movement aft at the trailing edge, though possibly it
was punched up. This does not appear to be along the sump / keel joint as the
crack is angled upwards and is not horizontal. The owner claims there have
been no hard groundings when asked directly, only a handful of soft groundings,
predominantly in sand, but I have read even that can do damage. The boat was
recently under contract and surveyed and that buyer decided against going
forward. The reasons given by the broker did not include any mention of
damage revealed during the survey. I do not have a copy of that buyers survey.

Any thoughts on what would need to be done to remedy this, or am I better off
to move on and keep looking? Should the keel be dropped and the keel bolts
examined? Or would there be other, less intrusive / expensive fixes which
would be sufficient and safe? I realize it is difficult to really determine
the best repair without physically examining the boat but any advice on what
likely would be required is appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

Hi everyone,

Just wondering about the my interior teak maintenance. The picture below shows what it looks like now. I tried to use paper towel, teak cleaner, teak oil, did not change a thing. Should I use scrubber or I am not on the right track? The yellow color seems
to be from something that "grow" from the wood.

I just had an overheating issue on my A4. Last year I had the Moyer inline
water alarm purchased and put it on to find the flow was significantly
reduced. I didn't like that so I removed it. This year, put the boat in
water, opened seacock valve for cooling and this weekend after many days out
already and numerous hours on the motor, the valve seemed to close after an
hour of straight motoring. It appears the valve closed on its own. Not
sure how long its been slowing closing itself but I'm sure nothing could
have inadvertently closed it, I'm sure of it. I suspect the last bit of
movement went the fastest once it hit the almost horizontal position. The
handle is very smooth and easy to close and I suspect the vibration from the
engine dropped the handle to perpendicular position of the valve. I will be
putting the alarm back on in short order. I also put a small tie around the
handle to keep it vertical. Still very odd as this has never happened
before.

I have not tried the "Bed it" brand recommended by others, but I will when I
find some. The stuff sold by Westmarine is useable but not the same quality as
that used on our boats originally. Forget about the Homedepot stuff, tried that
as well.

I left a roll of butyl tape in the boat in a cupboard under the side deck and
the heat from the sun melted it so that it does not release from the paper.
Makes it a PITA to use when that happens. Store it in a more or less cool
place.

Hi Charles, Mine was a grossly simplified description of the repair.  I was
just trying to nudge a recollection.  The repair, as far as I recall, was very
well done, I may be mistaken about the replacement of the anti skid section and
they may have just used the area as a boundary.  My memory isn't what it used

   Hi Danny,

The deck repair you describe sounds very weak since they omitted some very
important steps.     Slapping the old deck skin down without doing the proper
bonding will last for a while, but it does not reproduce the strength of the
original deck and will very likely open up after some foot traffic flexes the
deck a little.

You need to grind a 12:1 bevel around the joint to bond the skins back
together.  The bevel gets "over filled" with layers of glass cloth.  That gets
ground flush and then fairing and sanding and fairing and sanding and fairing
and sanding and finally the painting steps, with sanding between coats, to
protect the epoxy from UVs.  As the fiberglass guy told me,  "There are many
steps and you can't skip a step."

is bare bones though -- mostly narrative and none of the illustrated
charts that are common in other cruising guides I've seen.   There are
lots of places along the NS coast to drop the hook but if you need
fuel and supplies (gas in my case as I still have the original Atomic
4 in my C) the options are limited between Halifax and St Peters.
In fact, even Mahone bay, where I thought for sure there would be
fuel, only had diesel at the gas dock so we had to ferry fuel in jerry
cans from gas station using the dinghy -- all part of the fun!
Luckily the winds were very cooperative so we didn't really need much
fuel.

New Sails...

Hello,

I am sure we have been there and done that, but please indulge me…

Going through the process of shopping for new sails.   Not a small budget item
for a 40.   Know the arguments of local vs. national vs. offshore.   Cruising
with offshore racing and cruising with occasional beer can.   Main and 125%.
Leaning toward high quality Dacron cross-cut as they are easier to repair
and I do not want to get into the laminates.   Blew a big budget on those years
ago

Specific questions are regarding cloth choices generally and specifically as C
& C  have tall skinny mains (especially the 40).  What has been your
experiences with the differing sail lofts?  I am getting prices with 50% swings
and that
is a bit mind-boggling as I am getting information that many sails are built
in the same lofts overseas and re-branded.  I am sure that is an
over-simplification, but there it is.   Difficult to compare pricing with the
cloth specs being a foreign language
 to me.

Thanks in advance.

but I have a rebuilt A4 coming from a person who rebuilds these as a hobby.  He
has a very good reputation for the quality of work.I have been persuaded by two
sailing buddies (both of who race Cal 40's) that this isn't too difficult a job
and they will help me do the replacement.  I am looking for any tips and
gotcha's that this venerable group can provide me before I get started. One
major issue I can see is how to lift the engine off the mounts when the engine
is under the cockpit.  My engine builder who has done this a few times (but
can't any more due to his age) suggested I slide a 6x4 under the engine then
use a 2x4 as a pivot and raise the engine by having someone stand on the 6X4.
Then once free of the mounts, gently slide it back into the saloon and lift it
out through the companionway.  Has anyone tried this?I have lots of able-bodied
helpers to help me so manpower won't be a problem.  I am going to do all this
at the dock, so no crane to help with the lift.  And while the engine is out,
I'll remove the fuel tank and clean it out.  I'm sure there's crud at the
bottom.I'll document the experience for the benefit of others and share it once
it's done.-- Ian Matthew"Siento el Viento"  C 29-1San Francisco Bay

Ok, so I'm pretty set in the Mantus 55lb anchor but have decided against
stainless.  It just doesn't seem worth the added boat buck. Does anyone have
any insight on the Mantua bow roller?  My roller got twisted up in the mishap
and I need to replace it.  I'm wondering if it makes sense to go with a roller
designed for the anchor? Also, I missed west marine's 15 percent of on
thanksgiving but they're offering 10 percent tomorrow and that beats the deal
on the Mantus site.  Go figure...Thanks, Danny

I was going to go with a rocna at first but really thought the break down
feature would be nice on a heavy anchor. The charts call for a 55lb anchor for
my boat but, my boat falls just over the length limit and is right at the
weight limit for a 45lb anchor.  I thought it might be safer to go bigger but
the reality is that I'm years away from any lengthy cruising and might even
trade to a bit bigger boat for that...However, the cost difference isn't that
big of a deal between the 45 and 55...Thanks, Danny

Re: Stus-List Boat Selling Tips

2019-10-20 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
Jake, Have you gotten any calls at all? If not then your add and/or photos are
not working.   Was your broker able to give you a sold boats comparison of C
like yours?   That week help you know if your pricing is reasonable. If you are
getting calls and showings then, there is something with the boat. Do you have
maintenance records?  When's the last time the rig was serviced/replaced.  How
old are the sails, life lines, cushions, head hoses  etc...  clean clean clean.
Does it have that gross old boat smell?  Scrub the bilge.  That really helps.
If the boat needs sails & standing rigging you should adjust your price too
allow for those or do it yourself and out that in the ad.  I replaced sails and
standing rigging on a Viking 33 and the cost was almost $6k.  I certainly take
all this into considering when I've been boat shopping.  So many people defer
defer defer and then expect high market value. My Viking was clean had new
everything, including a new engine and I got high market value in 6 weeks on
the market. I sold it myself.  I listed everywhere.  SailboatOwners,
sailboatlistings, sailboatdata, Craigslist, anywhere i could find.  I paid some
for preferred listings.   Take pictures that will show as much of the whole
interior spaces as possible.   Close ups of the range and locker ands head do
nothing to paint an overall picture.  Some brokers use fish eye lenses, don't
do that. Those photos are awful. I can't stress enough that a clean oder free
boat is essential.  Keep the boat looking as though you just left not like
you've walked away from a foreclosure.  Take everything off and leave only the
bare essentials and well organised.  Then, a potential buyer will think, "the
person who owned this boat was very particular"  So it's either amazing
condition or great pricing that will attract a buyer.  Thanks, Danny

have yet to have a single buyer interested enough to even come take a look at
it.  The boat is well equipped for racing and cruising and comes with a ton of

it take to sell a boat these days?  Any suggestions would be

2019-10-17 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
Well, I just heard from Peter Costa... another boat, right next to me,
Panache, broke free of its mooring and slammed into my boat...
Apparently, his bow pulpit grabbed my anchor and ran off with it,
slamming into another boat.  pulled the anchor and rode, beat the hell
out on my pulpit, bent up my stanchions, and scratched the hell out of
my new paint job...  He said my boat is safe on its mooring at the
moment but it's still too rough out there to deal with the anchor which,
is still connected to the boat by the rode but pulled pretty far away
from it...   He said I'm in for ANOTHER new paint job!

Re: Stus-List cockpit cup holders

2019-09-30 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
we use robocup holders and are very happy with them.  they are a heavy
spring loaded clamp on style and can clamp on a stanchion, or the
binnacle guard, or any other verticle 1-1/2 inch or less. They never
fall off accidentally and we remove them after every sail.  Kind of like
the instrument covers routine.  The instrument covers come off and go in
the space where we store the robocups which then go out in the cockpit
and vice versa.   they are like $20 each but our first one is probably 7
years old and still works perfectly.  I guess the only downside is that
the mounting orientation is fixed but, that has never been an issue for
us as we mount them on the binnacle guard.

funny thing was, I kept eying one in the ships store at our last
marina.  They had just one, clamped to a shelving rack.  Finally I said,
I'll have that!  They all started laughing and making fun of me...
"what the hell are you gunna do with that?!"  they said... We loved them
so much a bought 2 more and I may buy another one to have 4.  There are
2 cup-holders per robocup so we have 6 cup holders now and may have 2
more soon

Are you referring to Salem, OR, or Salem, MA? If Salem, OR. I can
recommend Alison Mazon (503) 358-6983 or Joe Derie (503) 953-4008.
I've used both of them, and they are excellent, reliable surveyors.
They're both in Portland, but that's only about thirty-five miles from
Salem.

Re: Stus-List To The Cleaner

2019-07-04 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
This is exactly why I hate letting people work on my boat...The fact is that,
had you tried polishing yourself, you may have had similar results.  However,
you might have stopped after the first one...It really was just a matter of
time before those parts started looking like that...  I think for your own
better mental health,  you could come to an agreement with the guy to not have
to pay and see if he'll pay to fix the Dodger.  Bring it somewhere reputable
and send the guy the bill.   If the glass wasn't perfect to begin with, maybe
you could split the cost because you're ending up with better than you had.  If
your glass was perfect then he should foot the whole bill.  In the end try not
to get to angry.  Just work with guy and allow him the opportunity to make it
right.  I've been through 3 much bigger ordeals than this on 2 different boats.
My advice is, don't take it personally and just try to fix the issue with as
little pain as possible and put it behind you as soon as possible.  You'll be
much happier in the end and enjoy your boat much more!  Keep in mind, this guy
didn't want this situation as much as you didn't.  Stay calm and try not to be
angry with him (this is your biggest hurdle! ) and see where he goes with it.
One ordeal I had was the yard picked my boat up from the prop shaft and lied to
management about it.  Management sided with their guys and came up with all
kinds of reasons why my strut broke and why my prop was vibrating mercilessly
under power, and none of those reasons could be their fault.  So, I addressed
all their theories one at a time, calmly and never losing my cool.  None of
their theories solved the issue and in the end they had ri admit they did it at
haul out.  The owner of the yard apologized and covered all the cost of chasing
things down, fixed my boat put me back in and I had wonderful season.  It cost
me about 6 weeks though.  It was the first year I was in before memorial day
and with all that I was back in just before the 4 th of July.  I shook hands
with the owner professed no hard feelings and gained a really nice relationship
with the owner afterwards. The second issue was way worse, same story though.
The yard screwed up, would not own it made up lots of fantasy scenarios as to
why it couldn't be their fault.  I had it fixed, during the repairs, their
mistake was revealed without doubt.  Boat got fixed, gained some good
relationships along they way and I'm now happy and only feel sorry for the
jackass that couldn't behave like a gentleman or a professional, and had a huge
spotlight shined on his failings in the process.  That guy never apologized or
anything but had to eat crow to not only his regional manager but the three
vice president of the north east division after all the shit he talked about me
"just trying to get something for nothing!"  Sorry for the long
blathering...Thanks, Danny

and Archives Hey all, I am looking for info on holding tanks.  I need to
replace mine asI suspect its very old and is now cracking (fortunately on the
top side fornow).  The crazing lines in the hard plastic are turning to cracks.
I'mlooking for suppliers - maybe even in Canada.  The tank is a
triangularshaped under the V-berth.  I know we've discussed them before and I'd
loveto look back at the old archive threads but there are over 160 month
toindividually walk through.  Side questions - Is there an easier way tosearch
all of that, maybe a single search button I'm missing? Knowing thatwould likely
lower the traffic around here.Paul Hood'81 C 34 - Georgian
