Wisdom aside (perhaps literally), I went with a fancy Planus push-button model
that received high ratings from Practical Sailor a few years ago. A little
pricey, but the ladies like the ease of operation. I haven’t figured out what
I’ll do if the unit malfunctions while at sea, but fortunately this hasn’t
happened (four years and counting). It requires a remarkably large electric
service line as it draws something like 60 amps for a split second when you
push the button. It is mounted on the same platform that came with the boat,
which does not provide a lot of space (but is much better than the 34).

I think that the “common wisdom” is that Raritan PHII is the way to go, but it
might be more pricey.

Listers,

I’m looking to replace my Jabsco manual electric-conversion head on my C 37+
to a better electric one. While Jabsco makes a “Lite” version which has the
same mounting holes and same connections as the one I’m replacing, I’d like to
consider other manufacturers as well.

Has anyone done this? How did you mount it to the floor? There is no access
underneath there. Any insights welcome to help me save costs and avoid a,
pardon the pun, crappy job.

All the best,

On the new boat I have a new Jabsco Twist and Lock manual head going in

be set up to flush with either fresh or--when offshore--salt water. These
came well recommended by a pal who's an expert in that field.

serviceability is a key element to Jabscos being used. It is one aspect of

Edd,
More than likely its hollow under the head platform. What I have done on
several boats is to tap the fiberglass for a 1/4-20 thread. I always prefer to
tap instead using a coarse threaded sheet metal or wood type screw. Holds
better with much less gelcoat chipping. I have used the Jabsco "Quiet Flush"
heads with no problems for 10 years now.

Re: Stus-List Head Replacement

2018-03-16 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
I love my vacu-flush - that is, at least as much as an individual could
love a biological wasts receptical. The PO installed it so I can't tell
you much about the challenges of installation. What I CAN tell you is that
each flush is ~1 pint of fresh water meaning that the ~20 gallon holding
tank is good for ~150 flushes.

Many people live by the mantra that if it didn't come out of you then it
doesn't go in the head. I've never had to follow that guidance and I've
never, ever had the head become clogged. I've had conventional toilets
become clogged more often than the one on my boat though I'm not sure
feminine hygiene products would make it. It flushes with water from your
freshwater tank so it does increase freshwater usage but the trade off is
that the head doesn't smell and you can go considerably longer between
pump-outs. If you exceed 3 miles from shore I believe you can pump
overboard which is why the PO also installed a masserator pump. My y-valve
no longer exists - just a thru-hull valve for the masserator pump
discharge. There is a good amount of argument regarding the need to
restrain the handle but it seems the answer lies in the fact that 2 actions
are required to discharge overboard. Open the valve AND operate the
masserator pump switch. I've been voluntarily and unvoluntarily inspected
with no issue noted regarding the lack of a restraint on my thru-hull.

Stus-List Head Replacement Mounting

2017-04-17 Thread ALAN BERGEN via CnC-List
I replaced the Jabsco toilet in my boat, a few years ago, with a
"household" size toilet. I made a platform out of Baltic Birch, covered
with fiberglass and epoxy, that let me mount the toilet out a little so the
toilet lid would stay open when raised. By extending the mounting
location, I was able to keep the pump on the same side as before. I used
lag bolts for mounting.

Just grabbed the Jabsco in the box at West Marine. Manual pump type. I
recalled some on the list saying (naybe you) that the pump rebuild was a pain
and though the PO included that kit we decided to get a new pump unit. That
unit didn't fit the head so we got the whole shebang.

I didn't know how thick the wood was so I used 2 lags. One inch makes more
sense since the wood is 3/4. But there's plenty of space and I didn't punch a
hole in anything that I can tell.

 Bev and Bob,

We just did this on our 35/3 last weekend. We originally got a replacement
Jabsco pump to put on the existing bowl - it was supposed to fit all years
 models.

It didn't. Four bolt attachment to a three bolt connection. Blah!

So we simply got an entire new Jabsco from West.

Two of the existing mounting bolts (I believe they were hanger bolts)
broke off when taking off the old head. The new base did not fit over the
 previous ones.

So then we did what you did and tried to find access from underneath for
threaded bolts. Not available. Talked to a guy I know with a 35/1. It
turned out to be simple deal: There is solid wood infer the fiberglass
there. The answer is to use SS lag screws and washers. You need four. We
used 5/16 x 2. West Marine. Just screw them through the glass into the
 wood.

I cut the two old hangar bolts off with a hack saw (try not to saw the
surrounding glass - this is the hardest part - a grinder would have been
better). Set the new base on and marked two holes in front. Take it off
and drill a smaller hole as you would for a wood screw. The fiberglass
layer must be bored out to the diameter of the screw (5/16) or it will
start cracking. So do that just at the top of the holes.

Set the head in place and ratchet down the front two until it can't wiggle
and mark the rear ones. Remove, repeat the drilling and don't forget the
washers and a thin bead if silicone sealant under the base.

Worked like a charm for us newbies.

Should be able to use SS lag screws.  Most boats have a nice piece of plywood
there.  Drill the hole and you'll see.

Plan to replace CW with a Jabsco Twist and Lock.   What suggestions do listers
have for bolting this in place. There does not seem to be any access under the
platform the current head is on. Toggle bolts have been suggested.  Or
creating an inspection port for placement of nuts/washers.  Is there anything
under there I need to worry about damaging?  Thanks.

Re: Stus-List head replacement

2013-08-02 Thread Ron Kaye
Bev and Bob,

We just did this on our 35/3 last weekend. We originally got a replacement
Jabsco pump to put on the existing bowl - it was supposed to fit all years
models.

It didn't. Four bolt attachment to a three bolt connection. Blah!

So we simply got an entire new Jabsco from West.

Two of the existing mounting bolts (I believe they were hanger bolts) broke
off when taking off the old head. The new base did not fit over the previous
ones.

So then we did what you did and tried to find access from underneath for
threaded bolts. Not available. Talked to a guy I know with a 35/1. It turned
out to be simple deal: There is solid wood infer the fiberglass there. The
answer is to use SS lag screws and washers. You need four. We used 5/16 x
2. West Marine. Just screw them through the glass into the wood.

I cut the two old hangar bolts off with a hack saw (try not to saw the
surrounding glass - this is the hardest part - a grinder would have been
better). Set the new base on and marked two holes in front. Take it off and
drill a smaller hole as you would for a wood screw. The fiberglass layer must
be bored out to the diameter of the screw (5/16) or it will start cracking. So
do that just at the top of the holes.

Set the head in place and ratchet down the front two until it can't wiggle and
mark the rear ones. Remove, repeat the drilling and don't forget the washers
and a thin bead if silicone sealant under the base.

Worked like a charm for us newbies.

This is what you want, I posed the exact same question to the list about an
year ago:

http://www.fastenal.com/web/products/details/50845;jsessionid=FQksR7cCxNy14LM8jtQX5DcnjQvnM7HBcByYlRprGmQf2dBlQLw3!-1266547739!1014929580

On my 32 there were 4 bolts for the original head that didn't line up with
the twist lock that I was replacing it with. I think I reused one of the
original posts and drilled three holes. There was indeed plywood, but only
under one side IIRC. So I used the snaptoggles anyway.

I think the suggestion to go ahead and drill the holes is sound. I would a
really small bit to see what's in there. If you've got wood, go for some
large thread screws, if not, go for the snaptoggles.

I just installed a jabsco compact lock twist head and the original studs
did not line up. I used stainless steel snaptoggles. There is marine ply
under that fibreglass but not everywhere, I can't remember the exact
details now. The snaptoggles were the perfect solution, they hold very well
and you don't need access behind the anchor. Check it out.

Hi John,

I did it last September. Replaced the 1988 Wilcox with a Jabsco household
bowl. On my 38-3, there is no bolt under the toilet floor. It is solid wood
under the fiberglass, and those fasteners are wood screw studs with a round
head nuts.

I had to switch the pump mechanism to the left because the hole where the
hose come from the bilge was to close to the head output and I could not
properly shape the hoses.

I was able to reuse two of the four screw holes.

Hope it helps,

John,

Instead of rebuilding the head, investigate replacing the entire pump assembly
and the joker valve.  If the bowl is in good shape and you can find the correct
pump assembly, this might be a very viable option.

If you choose to replace the head, I suspect stainless hex head lag screws will
be your best option for bolting it down.  Most heads are simply screwed down.
If indeed it is a bolt and nut underneath configuration, then look at toggler
snaptoggles.  http://www.fastenal.com/web/products/detail.ex?sku=50845
