Re: Stus-List Tool(s) Recommendation for Battery Cable

If Edd’s going to pre-run and cut/crimp as he goes then I would think the
hammer crimp wouldn’t work for him.

In the thriving metropolis of New York, are there any tool rental places that
have them? Craigslist for a used one?

If you use the hammer crimp I suggested make sure you have a good "anvil". I
have always had the luxury of being able to take mine home and hammer them on
the concrete garage floor. The "V" shaped cradle and striker compress the lug
pretty evenly from 3 sides. While hitting it I can hear and feel a discernable
change when the lug is fully crimped. IMO This type of hammer crimp is
different/better (and cheaper) than the ancor dimple crimper (which can use a
hammer). The dimples in any size crimp connection are said to unevenly
compress and hold the strands of wire. The dimple can also cut the strands.

The FTZ crimper with the rotating dies is basically a less-expensive version of
the Greenlee I’ve got. Definitely the ticket for reliable crimps, so long as
you use good lugs.

Right. Up in the SF Bay I bought big wires at Sven's just because they

That said, I have one of those cheap Ancor crimpers. I don't use a
hammer. I use vice grips, and slowly work it down. It ain't perfect,
but all of those crimps have held up perfectly for many years. Of
course the crimp was sealed with the heavy clear adhesive lined heat

I’m well aware that yellow is the new black, but I don’t think the majority of
the cable manufacturers got that memo.

I’ll never confuse the AC hot lead with the DC ground. I keep my AC wires
insulated and away from my DC. When my AC wires are exposed, it’s only for a
few inches and very close to their white and green counterparts.

Edd,

You probably could find a marine electrician on City Island to do the crimps
for short $ after you measure the runs you need, mark the spools with tape,
and bring the wire spools, lugs and shrink wrap tubes to him. That way you
could get "good" cuts and crimps from a "good" crimper without shelling out
the $700 Denis mentioned.

He is getting $ for very little time on his part, and you are getting top
quality cuts and crimps without investing capital.

Re: Stus-List Tool(s) Recommendation for Battery Cable

2015-03-25 Thread Frederick G Street via CnC-List
The Greenlee compound-action crimper is the one I’ve got; the one that normally
goes for about $700. And I will only use that for high-current cabling; the
hammer-type crimpers don’t do near as good a job. Any small resistance in a
high-current cable will produce an incredible amount of heat, so the crimps are
extremely important to have right.

Also, only use the top-notch seamless tinned lugs with closed ends; they cost a
lot, but are worth it. And heat-shrink the lugs after crimping.

Yup ... those hydraulic crimpers don’t get much traction from Maine Sail in the

By the way I was looking at some terminal lugs at my local NAPA distributor the

if NAPA in the US carries these or not.

Luckily I have a nephew and brother-in-law who are electricians, with a lot of

Hopefully...

West Marine in Solomons, MD was well intentioned by suggesting that I use
their crimper. I looked at it and found that it was a nicropress swaging
tool. I tried one crimp and much to my disappointment it made huge mess of
the lug. If you find a loaner tool just make sure that it is the correct
tool. The hammer crimp is many times better.

For a more appropriate crimp you could try something like this. Its only
$20-25 dollars more. Since I already have the other crimper I won't be
buying this one but if I was in your shoes I would spend the extra cash.

I have big electricians crimpers. They look like bolt cutters. Electric
supply houses have them.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a tool (or tools) for cutting and
for crimping terminals onto #6 and/or #4 battery cable?
