[cobirds] Rosy-Finch Winter Distribution
Down here in the "lowlands" (Golden) Black Rosy-Finches seem to be numerous this year and Brown-capped Rosy-Finches scarce. On the other hand Park County has plenty of Brown-caps and few Blacks. A quick rough check of eBird Rosy-Finch records for 2021 shows the following: 55th Place in Golden (also labeled El Diente) 1/27 Gray-crowned 290, Black 15, BCRF 1 Mesa Meadows Golden 1/26 GCRF 61, Black *70*, BCRF 3 But in Park County (Middle Park) Brown Caps are predominant. Como 1/24 GCRF 8, Black 2, BCRF 32 Al Gulch Road (Jefferson) 1/9 GCRF 18, Black 5, BCRF *400!* The Lambs (Fairplay) 1/8 GCRF 1, Black 1, BCRF 75 I love these birds and am intrigued by the fact that at least this winter, the Brown Caps, almost Colorado endemics, are staying closer to their summer homes above timberline in the Colorado Rockies, whereas those that have come from Idaho and Montana (Blacks) and the Gray Crowns from British Colombia as far as Alaska seem to prefer lower altitudes in the Front Range. Blacks seem to be unusually numerous this year. Is (has) anyone studied the distribution of these scarce birds? How about a citizen science project to survey their numbers at certain feeder locations once a week during the winter. (CFO?) Isn't Scott Rashid banding them in Estes Park? Why do they come some years (like to Red Rocks and Ira Sanders' place in Golden) and then show up at a different location the next year? Where do they roost at night in the winter? Ira suggested that they need rocky cliffs like North Table Mountain for night roosts. [cobirds] Chatfield Horse Stables Off Limits
Several of us were approached by the State Park Police this morning and informed that they do not want non-horse people wandering around inside the stable/corral area. We are free to use the parking lot (where the Golden-crowned Sparrow has appeared) or to approach the rabbit brush area on the east from the road. [cobirds] Why Female Red-winged Blackbirds only?
I have as many as 50 or more Red-winged Blackbirds swarming my feeders every morning. Why are they all females? Males do not look like females in winter do they? This means they must spend the winter in different places. If so, what is the rationale for that? I cannot think of any other species that segregates by gender in winter. [cobirds] Chatfield is a zoo! (Jefferson/Douglas)
Today, Saturday the 11th, I thought I would check out the shorebirds reported at Chatfield SP. I knew it was not the best day or the best time (11:30 AM) but was not prepared for two lines of cars from the highway to the gate house even with two people working outside to sell admissions. Nor was I prepared for chock full parking lots from the swim beach all the way around to the Plum Creek area. Nor for thousands of half naked people swarming the whole reservoir (even paddle boards below the Herony Overlook; I thought that was out of bounds for boating) and every water edge including the Marina sandspit and near the Plum Creek Delta. We gave up and left to find the Black Phoebe at Wingate Park (did!) and found that all entrants were being turned away by 12:30. I hope this is a temporary anomaly caused by hot weather and COVID cabin fever or the birds will have no place to hide. The only good thing that can be said is that the State Parks system must have taken in tens of thousands of dollars in admission fees today. [cobirds] How about "Colorado Birding Forum"
Wow. It seems that the CoBirds RBA has caught the virus and died. RIP. It was a great run and sincere thanks to Joyce and all who did it for so many years! I like the suggestion that it continue as a forum for discussing Colorado birds and neat birding experiences. We are already doing that. Dave Leatherman and Ted Floyd would continue to contribute their birding adventures and keen insights. Any of us could do that. We could discuss topics like "Where has Tucker Gulch been all my life? Why was it so hot this year?" SWA access problems etc. Bryan Guarante's wind condition alerts. It would not prohibit discussion of rare birds like Fork-tailed Flycatchers or the Pterodactyl that Ira Sanders photographed flying over his house. But the primary reporting of rare birds would fall to eBird. More emphasis on bird watching than bird listing. Who would sponsor it? CFO? DFO? Both jointly? We would need a referee or referees and some basic rules. Bob Shade Lakewood Colorado -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Sage Thrashers at Chatfield (Douglas)
Micki and I went to see if there were any snow fallout migrants and found two dozen bluebirds of both species, robins, but little else until we found six Sage Thrashers at the Model Airplane parking lot. And then five first of year Turkey Vultures. And then over 100 elk grazing in the area south of the stables. And a brand new Bald Eagle nest in the cottonwoods between the road and the stables. Hardly any birds on the rising waters. Bob Shade Lakewood -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Addenbrooke Park "Trumpeter Swans" are DECOYS! (Jefferson)
They had me fooled for about 20 minutes. They are perfectly done, including thick necks and perfect big black bills. But I was alarmed when I noticed an aluminum cable attached to one, and then realized that the "male" in the lead and the "female" (head demurely bowed) were always very close together. Three pairs in three different parts of what is really a small pond. And then come to think of it, they always held exactly the same posture. And why were not all six together? I shot up a whole roll of film☺ getting "excellent" close-ups. It is a cautionary tale for us birders who have all had the experience of "knowing" exactly what we are seeing and being oblivious to some obvious clues to the contrary. Why? 1. An elaborate (and expensive) hoax to fool us twitchers? 2. An attempt to attract the real thing? 3. An elaborate decoration by park officials who have money to burn? You should go just to see how good these fakes are! Bob Shade Lakewood -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Warren Lake Gulls
Steve Kingswood and I found seven species of gulls at the west end of Warren Lake: RBGU, Iceland (Thayer's), California, Herring, Glaucous immature, Lesser Black-backed, and what we thought was an immature Glaucous-winged. It was the same size as the Glaucous but the bird seemed too dark. Hybrid? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Jeffco Snow Bunting
was seen again at 4:30 PM Friday by half a dozen observers in thickly falling snow (of course, it's a *snow* bunting!). The location is east of the coordinates reported by Myron Gerhart, about 100 yards west of I 70 viewed from the bike path along Clear Creek. Park in the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt parking lot just east of Youngfield and walk west along the bike path under I 70. The bird was seen on the water's edge of a 15 yard long narrow peninsula projecting diagonally into the creek from the south side. Four of us saw a Long-billed Curlew in the mudflats at the Platte River delta this morning about 11:00 AM. [cobirds] Woodpecker on our hummingbird feeder (Jefferson)
We seldom see woodpeckers in our yard let alone on our hummingbird feeder! I was thinking, "What is this bird thinking?" then I realized that woodpeckers have long tongues and could lap up the sugar water that way. My first impression was "Hairy" but did not get the binocs on the backlighted bird and now wonder if it was a sapsucker. Anyone else seen the like? [cobirds] Water levels and shorebird conditions on the plains, Washington, Morgan, and Weld Counties
Steve Kingswood and I just visited Prewitt and several other sites. The water is high at the Prewitt Inlet but we saw Baird's, Least, Semipalmated, Wilson's Phalarope, and one Stilt SP. Over 300 Franklin's Gulls resting on a sandbar in cool breezy weather. Close views. The playa at State 71 and JJ in Morgan County had about a dozen Baird's SP in the drying up slough on the south side. Weld CR 59 just south of US 34 had high water, duck weed and algae thick on every shore and few birds except for flocks of Cinnamon/Blue-winged Teals. Loloff Pond had high water but the little bit of shore on the north end had half a dozen Wilson's Phalarope, 3 Greater Yellowlegs, and Baird's SP and 2 Black-winged Stilts. Lower Latham was almost dried up on the south side with no ducks but about 70 Baird's and Least SP in the shallow water that was left. Cattle released in south side mud and rampaging through while we were there. The marsh on the north side is dry. BeeBee Draw pond much smaller and the area dry. [cobirds] American Redstarts at Audubon Discovery Center (Jefferson)
Not rare but very localized breeders in Colorado. Bob and Claire Knapp and I found at least three singing males (three heard, two seen, one photographed) between the bird banding area and the Platte River. Listen for a Yellow Warbler song that doesn't sound right. Redstarts have a great deal of variation in their song and as one wise birder in Illinois once told me, 'Listen to the voice, not what the field guide says they say." The trails are squishy. [cobirds] Lewis WP Stony Pass Road (Jefferson)
This afternoon Micki and I were able to find a pair of Lewis's Woodpecker and their nesthole in the Hayden Burn. Coming from the south (Cheesman Reservoir) on Stony Pass Road there are two roads going off to the left, first to Goose Creek Road, and the second Flying G Ranch. The LEWP were in the "V" between the ranch road and a climbing twisting Stony Pass Road among half a dozen dead Ponderosa Pine snags. If you don't see them, just wait; they are there. Also spotted a Red-headed Woodpecker flying in similar pines toward the ranch but did not check for others. Also found the Three-toed WP reported on June 9 by Dave Cameron at State 67 and Rampart Range Road. From the public toilet, walk in 10 yards on the dirt bike trail and immediately right on a fainter trail. Go some 200 yards along the ridge and notice an area of dead trees and aspens in a steep "bowl" on the right. I finally found it on the east side of the gravel pit pond just south of the parking lot at about 3:00 PM. Clear Creek Valley Park is a new location for me. It is bordered on the south side by I 76 and is kind of tricky to locate. 58th and Tennyson on the east side of Tennyson. Also 10 avocet, one willet, half a dozen Spotted Sandpipers, an assortment of Anatidae, and about 25 grounded Cliff Swallows on a very cold day (38). And one wet bedraggled fox on the I 76 side. [cobirds] Rusty Blackbirds still at First Creek and E. 56th Ave Denver County
Thanks to Peter Gent's excellent directions on 1/27 Micki and I found the Rusty Blackbirds, two males and a females. They were skulking in reeds and cattails but we were able to see them by climbing the bank of what looks to be like preliminary construction for a new bridge and looking down on them. Great site fidelity! I was surprised to see no rusty color whatsoever; both genders were in complete breeding plumage. [cobirds] Musings on Tyrants (no new sightings)
Now that there is a lull in rare bird reports, perhaps there is room for reflecting on my good fortune with the genus Tyrannus in the last few months. All flycatchers in North America are Tyrannidae but only the kingbirds are in the genus Tyrannus. Micki and I and many of you enjoyed the exciting Tyrannus savana (Fork-tailed Flycatcher) about Oct 22 at Prince Lake #2 in Boulder County (didn't know it was a Tyrannus until then). Then there was the Tyrannus melancholicus (Tropical Kingbird) near the S. Platte Reservoir about Oct 5. For me personally Cassins' Kingbird (T. vociferans) was a new yard bird (#102) on Sep 21, and the original tyrant T. Tyrannus (Eastern Kingbird) was a new yardbird (#101) on Aug 20. Just lacking Scissor-tailed Flycatcher (T. forficatus). I assume from the CFO state list that the Fork-tailed will be Colorado #503? Tyrannus trivia from Sibley (I) on pages 334 and 335: "Each Tyrannus species builds a stick nest in the outer branches of a tree." "All species in the genus Tyrannus have an orange or red median crown-stripe usually concealed by the dark crown feathers; the stripe is brightest in adult male and exposed only during displays." Didn't know either trivium! They are "tyrants" who do not tolerate other species (especially larger species like crows) but I did see an Eastern and a Western Kingbird peacefully co-existing in the same bush at Flagler Wildlife Area last May. Farewell all Tyrannidae until next spring. Maybe I can add Couch's Kingbird to my ABA list one of these years! seen again several times today Sep 22 at Tina Jones' property in Bow Mar (back yard) by several observers. [cobirds] Hooded Warbler at Welchester Tree Grant Park (Jefferson)
was seen again at 8:40 AM. A beautiful male. It responded to playback chips of this species. In the thickets over and near the stream on the trail close to the stream (north side) close to the upstream bridge. I was able to point out the location to four other birders; for one of whom it was a life bird, and for another Colorado #399. [cobirds] Piping Plover still at Prewitt Reservoir (Washington County)
Steve Kingswood and I spent a couple hours at Prewitt today. It seems like the height of fall migration for shorebirds (16 species) with an estimated 150 Stilt Sandpipers and 3 Pectoral Sandpipers. The Piping Plover was on the dry sand close to the first area you see in the southwest end north side. It does not have orange on the bill in basic plumage but the very light color and yellow legs make the ID certain. Black Terns everywhere. The northern shore of Jackson Reservoir has a 100 yards of shoreline exposed with fewer numbers than at Prewitt, mostly Baird's, Least, and 6 Perctoral Sandpipers. No Buff-breasted. [cobirds] Black Rail at Lower Latham (Weld)
The bird was heard by Steve Kingswood, a Mr. Haycraft, and myself singing the ki ki ki d call persistently on the south side. It is 150 yards east of the oil/gas facility on the south side, and about 50 yards east of a wire fence that comes in from the south. A single playback seemed to attract it as it moved closer and closer but never in sight. Time: 7:45 to 8:15. Sora also heard as well as the usual assortment of marsh birds. A state bird for Steve and second time for me. Bob Shade Lakewood -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Lark Sparrow (Jefferson)
I spotted a Lark Sparrow near my back yard this morning (3/13) on the edge of the Hayden Green Mountain Park. I did not think much of it until I checked eBird and see that this is an unusually early record. Also a Lincoln's Sparrow was at my feeders two days last week but this is not so unusual. [cobirds] Ross's Goose (Jefferson)
Hine Lake Robert A. Easton Regional Park. I was looking for the White-fronted Goose which I could not find at either this location or Johnson Reservoir in Clement Park, but settled for one Ross's Goose grazing with a flock of Cackling south of Hine Lake. This location is new to me. The south entrance is on Coal Mine Road a half mile west of Simms on the north side. A nice assortment of Anseridae, including some 40 Redheads. Johnson had about 400 Shovelers. Bob Shade Lakewood -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Coors Ponds security (Jefferson) No RNGR or LTDU
I too was questioned by Coors Company security. I was standing outside the fence (of course!) on the west side scoping the lake for Red-necked Grebe and Long-tailed Duck and *found neither*. Two drake Red-breasted Mergansers and four Ruddy Ducks. I had only been there fifteen minutes or less when the security truck stopped. She was nice enough but I was informed that this is private property and that Coors does not want people taking photographs. I assured her that all I had were binoculars and scope (thinking "Don't you know the difference?"). All birds were way too far away for the camera and lens in my car anyway. So two points: 1. If you go there best not to have a camera in view. 2. Is it legal to prevent photography of private land that is visible from public property? Does Coors Security really have jurisdiction over people on public property or are they just trying to intimidate us? What are they worried about? That some ISIS ninjas will blow up the pond? [cobirds] Standley Snowy Owl in the 'burbs today (Jefferson)
I saw it at 9809 W. 99th Ave on the chimney. This was my fourth attempt. A most amazing coincidence. Micki and I had just finished lunch with her brother and sister and spouses at Baker Square in Belmar, Lakewood. None of them birders. At 1:50 John got a call from his sister informing him that the owl is perched on a chimney two doors from her house. Sure enough 12 miles and 30 minutes later there it was in bright hot sunshine on said chimney. We hastened to the south shore parking area at Simms and 86th Parkway where we tried yesterday and informed Ray Sperger and several others. I hope they saw it. Why this bird likes this residential environment is a mystery to me. Bob Shade Lakewood -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Belmar 3 warblers YES
As of today Dec 19 about 8:00 AM I saw all three species, Yellow-throated, Prairie, and Audubon's on the west side of the pond along with four BC chickadees and a junco. The difference between yesterday early afternoon and this morning was striking, nothing versus mixed flock frenzy. So come early! Access: From Wadsworth turn east on Center at Panera Bread. After crossing Vance park on Center walk south in between 620 and 640. Work your way to the pond southeast of where you entered. The birds were in the morning sunshine on the west side of the pond. [cobirds] Sprague's Pipit pair Pawnee Birding Trail (Weld)
Steve Kingswood and I spotted a pair of SPPI at the first crossroads on the official birding route north of Crow Valley Campground. The road dips down to the intersection; a creaky windmill is in the southeast quadrant. The pipits were feeding with six cowbirds in the southwest quadrant. Maybe not "chasable" but worth checking if you are up there. A state bird for Steve. Also 101 Lark Buntings won the competition with Horned Larks who mustered only 78 even counting distant tweets. And 23 McCown's Longspurs, most of which were in the western section of the trail. Also a pair of Grasshopper Sparrows. They always puzzle me at first. Nothing remarkable at Crow Valley Campground except one Chimney Swift flying low with the swallows over the first pond on the north. Also a silent Red-eyed Vireo behind the picnic tables and pavilion. The creek is still swift and deep. Loloff Pond was brim-full and nearly empty of waterfowl except for one Black Tern and one Black Swan, looking very lonely. [cobirds] Indigo Bunting Lair o the Bear Park Jefferson County
After hearing and confirming visually my first Black-headed Grosbeak song of the season (2) I thought I heard my first Lazuli Bunting song of the season. Wrong! It was a male Indigo in the top of a tree (typical) in a grove of trees between the northwest corner of the parking lot and the highway. Territorial? Are INBU pushing west into LABU country? I saw over two dozen Painted Buntings in Texas in the second week of May and got to learn their song. They were in every location I birded between Fort Worth and Austin. I finally got #599 (Black-capped Vireo) and #600 (Golden-cheeked Warbler) for my ABA list. ☺ I was almost too late (May 8). If you go, mid- April is better. Also FOS pair of Plumbeous Vireo at the pullout halfway down the canyon where one can view the Golden Eagle nest. No sign of the eagles, either adults or young. By the way, there was a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak in my yard very briefly yesterday. Another eastern species that is not so rare here. [cobirds] Snowstorm fallout at Chatfield 4/30 (Jefferson/Douglas) and mystery sparrow
My friend Greg and I sneaked in two hours cruising Chatfield State Park yesterday afternoon. Many birds were on wet grass and on snow free roadsides. Most numerous were dozens of Western Bluebirds followed by Western Meadowlark, Vesper Sparrow, Mountain Bluebird, and Chipping Sparrow. One Savannah Sparrow. A dozen or more out of place White-throated Swifts foraging over the first gravel pond on the right just before Kingfisher Bridge. A soaring immature Golden Eagle in the same location. Two perched Swainson's Hawks, not common in Chatfield. NOW for my *mystery sparrow*. *I would appreciate ID help on this one*. It seems to be an Ammodramus sparrow because of a complete eyeing, stout bill and flat forehead and pink legs. I am guessing Grasshopper Sparrow but the richness of chestnut on the face does not fit any GRSP I have ever seen or can find in the field guides. You can see three photos on WRShade3flickr. [cobirds] Attempted Break-in by Spotted Towhee (Jefferson)
Within the last week the female of the resident Spotted Towhee in my back yard has been trying to get into my house. Twice she was fluttering against the glass next to my walk out French door opposite the small jungle of flowers there for the winter. Maybe she likes flowers? Saw her image in the windows? Isn't that what males do? This morning she was fluttering against the front door and the window beside it. Even saw her on the brass (lever type) door handle but she wasn't strong enough to open it. [cobirds] Prairie Falcon back at Red Rocks (Jefferson)
Yesterday the 22nd, after scattering seed at the Trading Post, I checked Cave Rock where the Prairie Falcons nest every year and sure enough found one (seemed large like a female) perched on a likely nesting ledge. [cobirds] Ominous sign in Allenspark (Boulder County)
The ominous sign was a ReMax "For Sale" sign in front of the Fawn Brook Inn. The owner drove up while we were there today and I thanked him for feeding the birds, especially Rosy Finches all these years. But of course this will be the end of the Rosy Finches and Evening Grosbeaks (I saw 28 there once in bright sunlight) unless the new owners happen to be bird feeders. Anybody out there want to buy it? By the way he mentioned that it is now way too warm for Rosies. He said they do not come at all unless it is *below 30 degrees*. Indeed in mid afternoon at 38 degrees the place was almost bird-less. Sadly, Bob Shade, Lakewood -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Trumpeter Swan still at Chatfield
in the middle of a hole in the ice in the second gravel pond upstream on the Platte river. Indeed, as Joe Roller said, it is a shorter walk from Rampart Range Road where it intersects the Highline Canal. You can scope it from the canal walkway but to get close (and the bird does not show any signs of alarm at close approach) you have to walk around the big property with the white fence and down the hill to the pond. [cobirds] Boulder Creek Worm-eating Warbler still there (State Bird!)
as of 10:30 this morning, the 9th. Directions: Go south on Folsom from Arapahoe. Just before Folsom crosses the creek, turn right and park in the public portion of the dirt parking lot. Walk west and cross the second bridge (the first bridge is closed) to the south side of the creek. Go down the concrete steps and walk about 30 yards. There is a very large dead cottonwood log on the right. Search the area on the left side of the trail. [cobirds] Large numbers of Cedar Waxwings, W Wood Pewee (Arapahoe)
This morning Micki and I found 20-25 Western Wood Pewees and about 100 Cedar Waxwings zooming around at the south end of Hudson Gardens in Littleton, the latter taking advantage of the many berry bearing trees in this beautiful park. We also saw Peregrine Falcon, Barn Owl, Great Horned Owl, and Red-tailed Hawk but could not count them because they were tethered to a Hawk Quest volunteer for a special photo shoot. Hudson Gardens is on the west side of Santa Fe Drive at the second traffic light south of Bowles. Admission is free. [cobirds] Re: Latham Egret
Have you considered the possibility of Egretta garzetta, the Little Egret of Eurasia? To me the excellent photographs are like this species at every point. See Sibley (older version) p. 89. [cobirds] Dry Creek White-eyed Vireo NO
I could not find any sign of the vireo between 10:00 and 11:00 AM today. Glenn Walbek stopped by and said he had not seen it much earlier in the morning and did not see the Little Blue Heron reported at Belmar. I want to thank Christian Nunes (did hear and catch a glimpse of the Grace's Warbler about noon 6/3) and Joe Roller for their detailed precise directions to these unlisted/lesser known sites. A great model for all of us when reporting rare birds. My rule is If the place is not mentioned in the County locations of the CFO site, give detailed directions. [cobirds] No Belmar Worm-eating Warbler
The warbler was undetected at the described site on the south side of the wedding pond (really the old Boathouse Pond) this morning between 6:05 and 6:20. [cobirds] Blue-winged Warbler and R B Grosbeaks (2) at Welchester Lakewood Jefferson Co.
I found the reported Blue-winged Warbler this morning at about 8:15 singing across the eastern boundary of Welchester Tree Grant Park in Lakewood (8th Ave) and called it in for a good look. It was a three note buzz, not the two note I am used to in the East. State bird only one mile from my home! While watching a singing Rose-breasted Grosbeak near the stream and east of the wooden bridge, spotted another male with a pale pink breast patch - a first spring bird. I've seen three RBGR this spring and only one Black-headed Grosbeak. Bob Shade Lakewood -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Northern Waterthrush at Belmar Park, Jefferson County
A Northern Waterthrush betrayed its presence by singing. A Belmar first for me! Location: The pond in front of the ornamental steps, north side under the willows. Also: A flock of 20 Clay-colored Sparrows in one location, actually seemed more numerous of the other Spizellas, Chipping and Brewer's. [cobirds] PAINTED REDSTART still at Crow Valley 5/1 4:30 PM
A great find!! Directions: Janie Osterbuhr (CSU student) alerted me that it kept returning to a group of half a dozen trees beside the barbed wire fence in the northwest corner. A path along the fence goes between the trees. Larry Modesitt showed up and found it in the group of trees in the stream (beyond the fence) a little further north. After about 20 minutes it returned to the grove describe above. A young man by the name of Nate (?) More also found a Black-throated Gray Warbler across the stream in a large tree on a straight line south from the pavilion. Someone had reported a Black-throated Blue but we could not find it in a brief search. The water depth in the creek is amazing! My mid calf length Wellies were not really enough. [cobirds] Red Rocks (Jefferson County) Fox Sparrow, GC Sparrow, Peregrines
The DFO trip to Red Rocks and Bear Creek Lake Park turned up the Golden-crowned Sparrow and the Fox Sparrow (Slate-colored subsp.) at the trading post feeders. [cobirds] Aurora Gull Watch? (Arapahoe)
We (DFO trip seven participants) were frustrated trying to ID the many hundreds of gulls at Aurora yesterday. The ice near the buildings on the west side is frozen and the birds now congregate in inaccessible flocks on ice ledges a good half mile to the east. So if the Slaty-backed is still there we missed it. Even with the best scopes and even in the best of light. What to do? 1. Wait until the ice melts 2. Stand on the dam and count the birds as they fly out in the morning or return at mid-day or afternoon. They commute to the landfill a few miles north (also inaccessible). Like a hawk watch only a gull watch. They fly low overhead. You can photograph them and identify them later. Unfortunately I am leaving town for a week. So let me know how it worked. You will also see: thousands of white-cheeked geese and two species of white geese. On country roads east and north: (raptor cruising) half a dozen Ferruginous Hawks and three or four Rough-legged Hawks. One beautiful dark morph FEHA on a power line tower just east of the reservoir entrance. Bob Shade -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Mystery mother Goldeneye and ducklings at Echo Lake Clear Creek County
On a DFO trip today to the Mount Evans area, eight of us saw and studied at very close range a female Goldeneye and five cute little ducklings. The bill was entirely dull orange (not yellow). The forehead slope was that of the Common Goldeneye, not the more nearly perpendicular slope of the Barrow's. I think Barrow's bred on Echo Lake last year. So is this female goldeneye a hybrid COGO X BAGO? See photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/wrshade3/ Please give me your expert opinions. Other highlights: 8 Red Crossbills at a meadow clearing on Squaw Pass Road seen at very close range on the ground. 4 Brown-capped Rosy Finches at Summit Lake within ten minutes. Strategy: Walk to the far west end of the lake to where the Mount Evans trail starts to ascend. Set your timer on one hour and just wait. This has worked three years in a row in July. Two small Mountain Goat kids delighted us all. We saw no Rufous Hummers at Echo Lake Lodge but after supper at home in Lakewood we had a Colorado hummingbird slam, including Rufous and Calliope for the first time! [cobirds] Rose-breasted Grosbeak at my water feature! (Lakewood, Jefferson)
A first year male showed up briefly at about 8:30 AM along with an unusual number of other birds at my little waterfall (yard bird #84). I had never seen this plumage before; the first year male is well illustrated in the Nat Geo Field Guide. The irony is that I have yet to see the commoner species, the Black-headed, yet this year. [cobirds] No Little Egret at Belmar (Jefferson)
I ran into Jim Schmoker and his wife at Belmar, and I joined them in studying a small white heron, but alas, it looked like a perfect Snowy Egret to us. No head plumes, just the usual fluffy crest. Bright yellow lores and yellow feet, all black legs. No feeding activity observed. At about 11:00 AM the bird suddenly flew off to the west and joined another small white heron. Both flew north and out of sight. Bob Shade, Lakewood -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Rusty Blackbirds continue on South Platte (Adams)
On a second attempt I did find five Rusty Blackbirds today at the east end of the bike/pedestrian bridge just north of I 76 on the South Platte River. They were viewed foraging in the dead leaves on the bank just south of the end of the bridge. They were very skittish and flushed to the pond northeast of the end of the bridge and then flushed again to the north end of same pond (officially Engineer Lake). There were also four Red-breasted Mergansers on the water works reservoir to the west of the bike path between I 270 and I 76. Three Bald Eagles and one very light Red-tailed Hawk which seemed to be an immature Krider's. No sign of the previously seen pelican. How can you tell a newbie birder? He tries to oil the rusty blackbirds. Bob Shade (Lakewood) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Redpolls at my feeder (Jefferson County)

[cobirds] Brambling at Bear Creek a male!
A number of us were there at the carefully described site at BCLP between 2:00 and 3:30 PM and getting photos in excellent backlighting. Joey Kellner mentioned that he thought it is a male and after comparing my photos with a number of field guides, including a Birds of Britain and North-West Europe, I conclude that it is indeed a male. Sibley shows the difference between male and female most clearly. See my photos at Flickr WRShade3 as well as Glenn Walbek's. 1. The orange breast meets strongly in the middle. 2. Sibley shows only the male having white lores which agrees with my head on photo. 3. The black and gray head pattern is more strongly marked in the male, again visible in the photos. I have seen this bird in the winter in the mountains in Japan at feeders a number of times but it was a real thrill to see it in my home county! It sometimes forms enormous flocks in Eurasia. The size and body shape reminds me of Rosy Finches. It should be a stayer! Bob Shade -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] NO Hermit Warbler at Last Chance on 10/10 AM
There were two Hermits but neither of them was a warbler on a cold, cloudy, breezy morning. Three birders searched for three hours but came up with only one Wilson's Warbler, a sprinkling of immature White-crowned Sparrows, and the immature Sora. All else cleared out! Don't waste your gas. I have a gripe. Why does the Colorado Birding List page switch me now to the ABA site? It used to be my home page and because of the switch I missed the news of the Hermit Warbler because I do not always go through to search for the Colorado list. [cobirds] RFI on Goldeneye family at Echo Lake
On a DFO field trip to Mount Evans yesterday July 26, we observed a family (presumably mother and six half grown downy young) of Goldeneyes for some time. The adult seemed to be in eclipse plumage:all *black* bill, brown head, sooty black rest of body except for a small white wing patch. I conclude this must be a family of Barrow's Goldeneye for the following reasons: Common Goldeneye do not normally breed in Colorado the nearest site on my field guide range maps seems to the Yellowstone area of Wyoming (Is this correct?) 2. The bill had no yellow, but did seem to be small. 3. The forehead did seem to me to be more perpendicular than the COGO. None of my books show these species in eclipse plumage. Nor do they show the downy young though I assume they are indistinguishable from COGO young. Someone mentioned this family had already been reported (where?) Did I miss something? Any confirmations for ID? For example seeing this bird earlier in the year with normal plumage). [cobirds] Yes, Rosy-Finches at Red Rocks (Jeffco) today
There were about 50 Rosy-Finches of all three species at Red Rocks this morning between 8:00 and 9:25. If you do not see them at first at the feeders check the cliffs to the south. I sat on a camp stool about fifteen feet in front of the large lower feeding area and was able to get eye-level photos of Rosies on the jagged wall ten feet to my left. Magnificent! They are not shy! Thanks to Mike Henwood who put out a bucket of seed at 6:00 AM! The Golden-crowned Sparrow put in a brief appearance. Also one White-winged Junco and three Pine Siskins and two first of year American Goldfinches. You only need the last ten pages of your Sibley's for all these finches. Brown-caps were not numerous and I am becoming aware that the distinction with Gray-crowned is a bit more subtle than I thought. Finally, at about 3:00 PM, with superb back lighting and clear calm conditions, saw the immature (1st year) bird flying around with its unique wing pattern near the southern end. [cobirds] Harris's Sparrow Estes Park YMCA (Larimer)
A single Harris's Sparrow showed up while we were watching quite lively activity at the YMCA feeders in Estes Park. I always stop to check out this place whenever I visit Estes Park. Drive 2.1 miles on highway 66 from the point on US 36 (just before RMNP entrance) and turn right and up the hill into the YMCA of the Rockies property. After leveling out take the dirt road right that that descends slightly in what looks like a driveway into a private home on the northern edge of the property. Park and walk down the road and you will notice six benches set up to watch the feeders below and to your left. Just sit quietly and watch the show. [cobirds] Red-necked Phalaropes at Prewitt, Washington County
My friend Steve Kingswood and I were scoping a flock of some 100 Stilt Sandpipers at the extreme southwest corner of Prewitt Reservoir today and noticed a few phalaropes which I assumed to be Wilson's because they had some buff and reddish on the back. But Steve was not satisfied that they were Wilson's. Later after a desultory and fruitless search for the Black-billed Cuckoo and warblers, we checked them out again, this time much closer and with the sun to our backs, and concluded that these were seven juvenile Red-necked Phalaropes. By this time of year, Wilson's would be very pale gray and white with no black patch in the eye and ear area. My shorebird ID skills are mediocre so I ask that any one out there this week check them out. One of the mysteries of migration is how first year juvies can find their way with no help from their parents. [cobirds] A better viewing location for the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron in Greeley, Weld County. Chimney Swift.
Bob Spencer and I went to Glenmere Park in Greeley to check out the YCNH today. We watched from about 11:00 to 1:00 from a much less obstructed vantage point on the west end of the pond. Find the culvert draining into the pond in the SW corner. To the left is a low row of willows. Stand to the left of that. Notice the Wood Duck nest box, currently being used by starlings. Go 12-15 feet to the left of that, pan up to about 3/5 the height of the nearest willow tree and you will see the bird incubating. Nearby a Black-crowned Night-Heron stood guard, presumably the mate. I first saw this bird June 10 at 5:00 PM standing in plain sight on the big fallen trunk on the north side of the island. After all it is a *night* heron and will be more active morning and evening. The incubation period according to The Birder's Handbook is 21-25 days. If the eggs do not hatch by July 4 (anybody know when the bird started incubation?) it may be because they are infertile. No sign of the Little Blue Heron reported here. An unexpected bonus for me was a single Chimney Swift which circled the pond overhead for some five minutes on two different visits. A Colorado first for me. Bob Shade, Lakewood -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] American Redstart Jefferson County
I heard a strange song this morning in the open space behind our new residence on Green Mountain. Then a small bird chased a Yellow Warbler (itself a first time yard bird) into the tree in our back yard and posed in plain sight singing the same repertoire. It was a female type (most likely a first year male but no hint of black) American Redstart! Please do not try to chase it as it is gone now. [cobirds] Savannah Sparrow, Meyer's Ranch Jefferson County
Yes, not that rare a bird for a rare bird alert but I do not see them that often and maybe some of you may want it for a year bird. And this one is singing on territory so it is chaseable. It took me awhile to realize the correct ID as the yellow lore spot was very faint. Go up US 285. Just past Windy Point and before Conifer is the Meyer's Ranch exit. The trailhead parking is on the south side and the bird hangs out in the marshy meadow south of the trailhead. Also a very fearless male Broad-tailed Hummingbird refused to give up its perch-post at the exit to the trails even though my wife put her finger within six inches of it. A profusion of wildflowers there this time of year. Bob Shade -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Crow Valley, Pawnee Grasslands additions (Weld Co.)
My friend Steve Kingswood and Steve's third grade daughter Ruthi birded Crow Valley today from 7:30 AM and found in addition to what has already been reported for May 31 a Nashville Warbler and a nice male MacGillivray's Warbler. Steve saw his first Colorado Ovenbird. We did not see these warblers until we walked the trail along the fence *eastward* from behind the picnic area. Also an immature Broad-winged Hawk soaring over the prairie at the north end of the campground. We found almost as many species at Norma's Grove (just east of the intersection of county roads 57 and 100) including nice looks at a Northern Waterthrush and a male Chestnut-sided Warbler. The biggest surprise was a male Orchard Oriole on a barbed wire fence at the 57/100 corner. We counted ourselves lucky to see a Red-headed Woodpecker on the north end of Crow Valley Campground but ended up with a total of* four* for the day, all in different locations (Norma's Grove, 57 and 104, and on the west side of CR 77 just north of the ranger (?) station. Birders spotted (almost as interesting as birds) included Dave Leatherman ten feet from a dozing Common Nighthawk and Warren Finch (very glad to see him out and about). Who is this Norma? I want to thank her personally! Does it seem to you that there have been an unusual number of eastern warblers this year on the Rare Bird Alert? It might be a good project for someone to come up with a total tally. I don't recall so many Bay-breasteds in the six years I have been checking CoBirds. [cobirds] Broad-winged Hawk, Jefferson County
I found an immature Broad-winged Hawk at Welchester Tree Grant Park on 8th Ave in Lakewood this morning. It flushed in the area south of the stream and west of the main entrance path and perched about 25 yards away so I could get a good look at it. Also one McGillivray's Warbler and one Dusky Flycatcher (calling). Belmar Park yielded a Sora calling in the marsh. Bizzarre location department. While checking for the Peregrine Falcons at Ship Rock (saw none this time) a Northern Harrier circled Ship Rock and, apparently finding a thermal, soared aloft. No doubt a migrator. One Green-tailed Towhee at the feeders otherwise nothing there of note. Canyon Wrens singing. One of the finest singers in the West. Western Tanagers are on the move with three males at the south entrance. Bob Shade -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Eastern Phoebe at Chatfield, Douglas County, Peregrine
Yes, an Eastern Phoebe at the bridge across Plum Creek near the Plum Creek Delta parking lot. It popped right out to check the song of its species on the Nat Geo app on my new iPod Touch. (Don't worry I shut it off immediately.) Also a Peregrine Falcon in the marshland south of the old nature center (under water) parking lot. 14 White-faced Ibis and a dozen Franklin Gulls on the sand spit. Check them out with me on Wed AM DFO trip tomorrow April 20. 7:00 AM at the swim beach parking lot.
