Re: [CGUYS] A Multigenerational Look at the iPad
To be fair there are a few surface' platforms out there but not many. Has anyone ever seen one in use? Yeah, on TV shows and in movies, thanks to CGI and animation. Steve Well, it's not quite THAT bad. They do exist, and they are in use. I know that some hotels use them (Sheraton is one). They're also in some Hard Rock Cafes and (I've heard) in Disneyland. MSNBC used one during its election coverage. And, of course, MS uses them in its own retail stores. I've seen them (and used them) myself many times, although not in the wild, only at MS events. If you have $12,500 that you're tired of carrying around, you can buy one today for yourself. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] A Multigenerational Look at the iPad
The second market of aging baby boomers and the greatest generation may be even more significant in that it is mostly untapped. This market has been largely bypassed by the information age. The majority is off the grid and many are computer phobic. The PC or smart phone is not intuitive to them I have to say that I think they are on the mark with this assessment. My husband is fairly computer illiteratehe has a macbook and an iMac but I had to set them up for him and have to answer daily questions on how to accomplish what to me are obvious things. His cell phone is as old as he is (67)g and he really wants to get rid of it because he doesn't need it. But ever since the announcement of the iPad he has bombarded me with questions about it and what it will do (for him). He is a readerwith books lining the walls and every other surface of his officeand is huge on newspapers but is sick of having to throw them out because of the waste. He does crossword puzzles all the time.so for him, the big iTouch is perfect. He couldn't manipulate or see to read on the small version so the big one is the answer. This is the first time Ive ever had to compete with him for first rights to a tech toy! I want an iPad too! Yes the local DMV uses touch screens for their Drivers tests, and one of the Big Orthopedic clinics uses windows touch screen laptops for their staff, medical records. Stewart Rev, I think the question was about surface platforms, which are different from simple touchscreens. They're typically big, expensive tables with touch-sensitive screens that cover most of the surface. At some point they'll be sensitive to more stuff, e.g., you'll be able to just put your camera anywhere on the surface, and the system will recognize what it is be able to do useful things like downloading the pix. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Hardware is different than software. until a piece of hardware hits the retail shelves it is not real, as it can be tweaked played with etc. Software is similar but usually they soak the ground with betas etc. MS is working with phone manufacturers to make sure they meet certain hardware minimums that MS wants. Already they are talking a 1 Ghz processor within the phone. Until the phone meets software we will just have to see. Last night I saw the first ads for the Ipad. Lots of Ad space, but not a real look at it. Until it hits the shelves (it has already been delayed) we wont know real world reviews of it. Lets be honest here. If MS announced a spectacular new piece of hardware/software and did not let you feel it and touch itl, you would cry that it is vapor ware until it actually hit the shelves. I wont go that far with the Ipad. It is not reality until it is in the hands of the consumers and the reviewers (not prototypes, but real actual live Ipads) I already saw where the CEO of ATT was saying most folks do not want to pay for an extra 3G service plan. So he did not expect a huge number of those to be sold. Kind of a strange comment to me. Stewart At 07:06 PM 3/8/2010, you wrote: Until it hits retail shelves it does not exist. We have only seen Jobs handle it and some after time playing. Same with Windows 7 phone. On April 3 we will see the whole story when it hits the shelves. [CGUYS] A Multigenerational Look at the iPad
http://www.internetevolution.com/author.asp?doc_id=188456f_src=ieupdate One of the big attractions of the iPod was that it was immediately obvious how to work it. Other MP3 players can still leave one scratching ones head over how to operate them. This article predicts a similar huge market for Apple... The second market of aging baby boomers and the greatest generation may be even more significant in that it is mostly untapped. This market has been largely bypassed by the information age. The majority is off the grid and many are computer phobic. The PC or smart phone is not intuitive to them. The iPad doesn’t feel like a computer. It feels like a tool, such as a TV remote control. It turns on at the touch of a button. It doesn’t take forever to turn on, or require esoteric knowledge or a manual. It’s easy to operate. You don’t need a mouse. The screen is large enough for aging eyes (vs. small screens of smart phones). And users can get 3G continuous Internet access. The iPad for this market introduces online banking, iTunes (music, TV episodes, movies, etc.), YouTube, Facebook, Google, Bing, Hulu, Flickr, and the Web in general easily. And grandparents will finally be able to see pictures and videos of their grandkids instantly while directly communicating with them via email or chat. Apple is tapping a huge greenfield market. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
