If memory serves me correctly the board itself was $495. I
got it straight from advantech. ( You do have to add memory
I'm running 128M).

I am running SNF on it ( running the 2.2.17secure kernel
from the 7.2 distro). SNF gave me some flexibilty that the
'hardware' solutions couldn't.

I meant it compiled, but now I remember why i am not using it. It froze
in the middle of all the demo clips I tried. I gave up and actually
forgot about it.

Concerning your other message, it's already been reported. The two gcc
versions don't go well together.

I think the problem lies herein:

$ rpm -qvl gcc-cpp-2.96
lrwxrwxrwx1 rootroot   12 Nov  9 00:44 /lib/cpp -> /usr/bin/cpp
-rwxr-xr-x1 rootroot0 Nov 9 00:44 /usr/bin/cpp

[brian@pc brian]$ ls -l /lib/cpp
lrwxrwxrwx1 root root   25 Nov 10 00:54 /lib/cpp ->
/etc/alternatives/lib_cpp*

The rpm has a link for /lib/cpp (to /usr/bin/cpp) even though it is
reset using the "alternatives" hook. If both packages used
alternatives and at least one of them "versioned" their files
(/usr/bin/cpp3.0 for instance) having 2.96 and 3.0 (and 2.95 once I
build the SRPM!) installed in parallel should be "RPMable" at least.

Thots?

I "built" it with 2.96. It has a display problem with SDL, MPEG1 and
non-accelerated hardware though. That is what they are blaming on
2.96.

I was going to try 3.0 even though the Mplayer folks don't like it
either. They also claim that 2.95 builds faster code than 2.96 or
3.0.

Ok, granted, this one looks alright. But, then again, we're running
Linux and not FreeBSD... =)

I still really think the idea of any ansi/ascii stuff prior to the
login is just plain ugly and unprofessional. I would much rather see
stats on the system (ie. use linux_logo to produce a nice display of
uptime, bogomips, load average, CPU/RAM info, etc.).

[Cooker] where can I get a gcc 2.95 for Cooker?

2001-11-12 Thread Brian J. Murrell

I am starting to get into a finger pointing excercise because I have
some troubles with Mplayer. When I ask them about them, they blame
gcc 2.96.

I need to try to compile with 2.95 so that either a) I can determine
that gcc 2.96 is the problem and file a bug-report, or b) determine
that gcc 2.96 is NOT the problem and push it back to the Mplayer
folks.

So where can I get a gcc 2.95 for Cooker? SRPM would be fine -- I
will build it on recent Cooker if I have to.

Thanx,

Ugh. Please, no.

I had enough ANSI art when I ran my BBS for many years... since I
terminated it a year and a half ago, I would really like to progress
beyond ANSI art. Come up with a complete hires framebuffer login with
good graphics and people will be more pleased than with some cheezy
ansi junk.

My $0.02CAN, but I think linux_logo is cool *without* the logos. Good
tool, logos suck. And considering you can only do so much with ANSI,
let's just spare ourselves the pain of looking at a variety of ugly
login screens.

As I have read in LKML, after the latest 'release' of devfs, it was still
broken. So the mantainer (see the state of the beast...) finally decided
to drop the current implementation and start feeding Linus-Alan a new
fully reworked devfs (that is supposed to have not locking-race problems).
But the problem is that the patches are leakin' in pieces to the list,
I have not seen a full patch...so wait until it is complete. I'm
sure Juan is tracking the list.

Description :

unclutter is a program which runs permanently in the background of an
X11 session. It checks on the X11 pointer (cursor) position every few
seconds, and when it finds it has not moved (and no buttons are
pressed on the mouse, and the cursor is not in the root window) it
creates a small sub-window as a child of the window the cursor is in.
The new window installs a cursor of size 1x1 but a mask of all 0, ie
an invisible cursor. This allows you to see all the text in an xterm
or xedit, for example. The human factors crowd would agree it should
make things less distracting.

[Cooker] scannerdrake updated - partially worked

2001-11-12 Thread Robert Fox

I have a Mustek 1200CU USB scanner. I was able to find a different
sane-backends package on the internet and get it to work with cooker
previously.

After a fresh install of Cooker (from last week) - I downloaded the new
drakxtools and tried scannerdrake.

It found the device and said it configured it. I now have a scanner icon
on the KDE desktop which says: XSane /dev/usb/scanner0

but when I click on it, xsane complains and says "failed to open
device: /dev/usb/scanner0 - Invalid argument.

Checkinglsmod - scanner module is loaded and there is a device under
/dev/usb/scanner0

But I cannot access the scanner.

according to http://snapscan.sourceforge.net/ it is the same pb as agfa usb
one. you need a firmware update from your windows driver. thus i cant support
it out of box. you need to do the firmware update. but it will work (normaly)
if you do the firmware. you do not need anything more.
Btw, cat you send me the output of "cat /proc/bus/usb/devices" ?
For the firmware pb, please call Acer and ask them to release the spec of

BUT, there is NO support (for the moment, working on it asap) :

install the memtest rpm package. If you are using lilo, you'll
find the memtest entry at lilo boot. select that entry and
you'll go in the memtest.

To build a bootable floppy with memtest, copy the memtest.bin
file you find in /boot to your floppy, using:

dd if=/boot/memtest.bin of=/dev/fd0

and then boot that floppy.

That's all.

Hmmm..., the easiest way would be to make a boot disk and replace the kernel
with this file, remove any initrd and look into "lilo -r" (man lilo), or
maybe "man syslinux".

This is really, really bad. I suspected it would work better with redhat... I
wonder if Mandrake only tries to aim at the home user market?

Regarding kudzu, have you tried to skip all kudzu stuff while booting and run
it after the machine has booted?

[Cooker] cooker on compaq

2001-11-12 Thread sven

Hi all,

Just finished trying the RedHat 7.2. Well, believe it or not, absolutly no
problem even when booting from the CD (unlike cooker for which we need to
boot with the network.img). The disks and mouse get detected without any
problem, and the installation seems to want to go on.

BTW, once ML 8.1 or cooker is installed on the Compaq, the machine hangs
while detecting new hardware. Changing the kudzu safe option to yes in
kudzu.conf (so that the serial ports don't get probed) solves it all. There
definitly is a problem with the serial ports probing.

[Cooker] ifup-ipx

2001-11-12 Thread Olivier Thauvin

I'm looking for on my Mandrake 8.1 for initscript that set up the ipx
protocol on network device. I' ve found on /etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifup
this line

[root@andromede network-scripts]# grep -i ipx *
ifup:if [ "${IPX}" = yes ]; then
ifup:   /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-ipx ${DEVICE}

but the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-ipx script does not exist, on my
8.1, it is in initscript package on an 8.0.
And this script does not appear on cooker package.

Is it a bug ? How can i start the ipx network ?

I don't see the point. if you do rpm -ivh
kernel-source.whateveryouwant.rpm, you can install several kernel-source
package side by side but :
+ /usr/src/linux will point to only one
+ kernel-headers will overlap previous so in fact you can only have one
kernel-header at the same time. Unless we use the same idea.

I will try to fix such things by allowing creating medium by only using the
first CD, this will be simpler for Mandrake Installation CD used.

I want to build a network appliance with SNF. A company call Lanner has a
few SBC that look interesting. Two I'm interested in have 3 RJ-45 ports.
One of them uses the Geode family and the other uses Intel's 815E chipset.
