Is there really any good reason to continue to ship this? Seems that
there is a movement away from using this. sendmail no longer requires
it for TLSSTART suppor (looks like the Mandrake package doesn't require
sfio for sendmail).

Incidentally on the version issues. I believe 1999 is being used
because like 2002. Not sure about 2002. At least Claus on his webpage
says 2000 shouldn't be used:
http://www.sendmail.org/~ca/email/tlscomp.html

Basically it looks to me like the only thing using it is postgresql and
honestly I don't know anything about postgres. But if postgresql
doesn't really need it. Rebuilding without it and moving sfio to
contrib would drop 237k out of main. Not much but something that might
be better used for something else.

But then again postgresql might need it or there might be a really good
reason to continue shipping this in main. I'm just not sure what it is.

root has pretty much access to everything, maybe it's trying to access
something else (not inside your $HOME) that you don't have access to ..

If you do think that it is a file permission problem, try doing strace
on it, then grep the output for EACCES (permission denied). A quick strace

This seemed to be the cause of my nautilus problems from last week.
copying the .rpmnew file (with the desktop: libdesktop.so line) seems to

You just want to set the tasklist's minimum width to the full size it
can be in your panel, then it will always be that size and the buttons
(you call them rectangles) for programs will dynamically resize to fill
the whole space - the same behaviour as Gnome 1.4. So for my 1024 width

why there is no such package in cooker :)

Because it's damn hard to figure out how to do it... How to make apache1

I think that should be possible and I'll probably try it because I have to
create a fresh mod_php for apache2 anyway. The only problem is:

if we compile a php which can be used for mod_php for apache2, we have to
compile the whole php with code which is marked as experimental. But this
should not be a problem for Cooker - as long as it stabilizes before the
package should be in a stable distribution

I simply need to run Configuration-Gnome-Advanced-Gtk+ Theme

NOTE: I _do_not_ have to actually select a theme. Just simply running
the theme selector restores my previous font and theme selection. I
can Close the Theme Selector and all is fine.

it would be nice to have these preferences restored when the desktop

The latest version of webmin is not accepting logins and will loop, though it

would webmin be affected by the broken PAM support with openssh3.4 in the perl

How we have integrated brltty support in a custom tomsrtbt distribution.
http://www.culte.org/projets/biglux/marco/bigletom_en.shtml
It was an easy task as we just wanted a dedicated floppy.

Integrating brltty is essentially a choice of keyboard on a special device,
the difficult part beeing that that choice must be easy for a blind person
which by definition does have the help of his braille keyboard at that time.

We have access to a VisioBraille tablet for tests.

Cooker PPC Radeon PCI

2002-07-17 Thread MC

Hi,

I recently installed Mandrake 8.2 on my BW G3 (feat. a Radeon PCI)

Everything went fine during startup in text mode.
But, when the KDE login screen is supposed to appear, all I get is an error
screen.

I'v tried both Xpmac and Xfree 4.2.6 at the end of the install process, but
the result is the same.

Xfree reports the following errors:

(EE) RADEON (0) : CANNOT READ V_BIOS (5)
(EE) RADEON (0) : [AGP] AGP NOT AVAILABLE (bwahaha!)
(EE) RADEON (0) : [DRM] failed to remove DRM signal handler
DRIUnlock called when not locked

What can I do to get that Radeon working?
I can run KDE after replacing the Radeon card by the old R128 and changing
Xfree's setup, but it's a little bit annoying to do so...

Thanks,

Martin

PS: By the way, will mandrake ever support (acard) ATA-133 PCI cards ? Since
that kind of card is quite common, it would be appreciated to get it
supported by Mdk ...

Well some Radeon cards work quite fine. The radeon based tiBook that Phil
lent me worked quite well, and I updated the installer to support
graphical install on it.

Some things to look at:

See if the agpgart module is being loaded. If not try loading it manually
via modprobe. If that helps, make an entry in /etc/modules.

Try disabling DRI in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Unfortunately, until video card manufacturers feel shipping Linux/X
drivers with their cards (PPC versions too), we'll always be playing
catchup.

PS: By the way, will mandrake ever support (acard) ATA-133 PCI cards ? Since
that kind of card is quite common, it would be appreciated to get it
 supported by Mdk ...

Thanks Ben for covering this one :)

rpm -e or urpme XFree86-Xpmac (just in case)
urpmi XFree86-Xpmac

This should change the symlink to allow Xpmac to run.

What video card in this machine?

I haven't run into too many people that want a dialup connection brought
up at boot, but you should be able to alter the scripts in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts to run that command, or add it in
/etc/rc.local to have it run at boot, if that's your desire. I know kppp
has that as an option, as well as the normal /etc/ppp/options, for text
based dialup initiation. (that might be something to look at too - man
pppd - see defaultroute)

I've used XFdrake and now I can't open X11 cause I get only a black

me too, after more than 3 completes re-installs of mdk-cooker.

I can't try other configurations cause any time I test it I get the
black screen
and I've to reset via hardware (and the filesystem isn't happy ;)..

for me ctrl+alt=backspace works in order to reboot cleanly now.
but you have also to wait enough time...

So I would like to go back and use Xpmac again, but .. how do I have to
do it ?

that's easy :

put the right cdrom

and then type as root :

urpmi XFree86-Xpamc

i do have something the like. kppp isn't working (pppd time out) however a :

ifup/ifdown ppp0

works well, again as root...

I'm not sure that's what he wanted however the internet startup script
is designed to do just that. Bring up a dialup connection at startup.
Unfortunately I seem to recall it's pretty buggy.

weird kde3 problem -- won't launch anything

2002-07-17 Thread isaac

hi,

ok, i broke my kde3...

anybody know what causes this one? i get something similar trying to
launch any kde app or kde itself.

korganizer: relocation error: /usr/lib/libDCOP.so.4: undefined symbol:
_ZN14QPtrCollection7newItemEPv

A little history...
This was an 8.2 setup, with the kde3 from contribs working fine. Then I
thought it would be real clever to update the C libs and try out the
newer kde3 and some Cooker goodies like Mozilla 1.0. Bad Idea. Now I can
only use gdm and Gnome (no kdm). Argh.

Anyway, I can't easily re-install because my internal CD drive is dead,
and I can't boot off my external USB CD. Too bad, that would be much
easier than trying to fix this mess.

Also FYI, I'm able to boot a ramdisk and get to the installer, but it
won't recognize the USB CD drive (only the dead internal one), so I can
only do a network install of Cooker, which fails anyway, because it
can't download the packages for some reason. Is there a better way I'm
missing?

Any help would be appreciated, I urgently need some things from kmail.

here is a listing of relevant packages that are installed.

# rpm -qa | grep -e qt -e kde -e arts | sort

Yes, and I know better, too. I thought maybe it would be OK this time. Ha.

Shouldn't you just downgrade your glibc and attached packages to solce
the problem (did you ?) ?
And you could compile the cooker packages you want from cooker on your
 8.2.

But won't that break a lot of the cooker packages I installed? (I
upgraded a bunch, but how many actually need the newer glibc?)

Xpmac and french keyboard

2002-07-17 Thread Yvon Thoraval

Im following the :

Swiss-German keyboard layout for LinuxPPC http://www.lka.ch/linux/
de_CH-kbd/

giving this advise for Xpmac :
-
--
File: /usr/X11/bin/startx
Explanation:This is the script that starts X windows; the original needs
to be modified to use the non-US configuration files.
Do this only if you use Xpmac! Xfree86 uses /etc/X11/XF86Config = 4a
Change the line that starts with Xinit to read:
Changes:

Xinit $clientargs -- /usr/bin/X11/X -kbdtype de_CH(extended) $serverargs
-
--

I've found startx in /usr/X11R6/bin

with no line starting with Xinit however this is at the beinning :

userclientrc=$HOME/.xinitrc
userserverrc=$HOME/.xserverrc
sysclientrc=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
sysserverrc=/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc
defaultclientargs=
defaultserverargs=
clientargs=
serverargs=

may i add th full path of my french keyboard (/usr/lib/X11/xkb/keymap/
macintosh/fr_new) as clientargs giving :

clientargs=/usr/lib/X11/xkb/keymap/macintosh/fr_new

also, apart from that point, their is no xserverrc in /etc/X11/xinit

is that only due to the use of Xpmac ?

ok, it's back. I think. Haven't tried rebooting yet. But downgrading seems to
have worked.

For the archives:

Cooker: don't use it on a machine (or perhaps partition) your life depends on.
Seriously, just don't even go there. I was warned and did it anyway. Now I
know. Just Don't.

Thanks everybody for the tip to downgrade glibc.
