[Cooker] BETA 1 installation problems
Other problems I had. 1) Gnome toolbar was empty (I do not know is this a bug) a) I made quite small install where I only selected GNOME not KDE, multimedia, officetools, etc. b) reboot and logged in c) Gnome toolbar is totally empty. (I needed to start there all applets starting from the GNOME-menu) I do not know is this bug, but at least I thought in the beginning that installation has failed somehow. 2) Harddrake does not start a) Fresh install b) harddrake is in the configuration menus but does not start 3) Mandrake install does not regognize JFS-volumes which are formatted in the OS/2. a) I created and formatted 2 partition to JFS in the OS/2. Partitions where /dev/hdb5 /dev/hdb6 b) I started Mandrake installation and tried to install Mandrake to /dev/hdb5 c) Mandrake installation does not recognize the type /dev/hdb5 and /dev/hdb6 to JFS-partition (formatted to that in the OS/2) d) I needed to re-change the type of /dev/hdb5 (where I wanted to install Mandrake) to JFS again and format that during the linux-install. e) FAT and FAT32 partitions where automatically mounted under /mnt/... but /dev/hdb6 was not. (which is JFS partition formatted in the OS/2) f) With command mount -t jfs /dev/hdb6 /mnt/os2jfs I was able to mount this drive. So there were two problems, steps c) f)It would be nice if Mandrake could do step f) during the install automatically in a same way that it handles FAT-drives. 4) Gnome dictionary applet hanged totally a) I was not connected to the network b) I wrote some text to the dictionary applet and pressed enter... c) Total hang, after one minute I got some empty error-message boxes and I was able to kill the applet. It's nice to have up to date libraries but removing old ones isn't a good idea for commercial applications : for example, opera 6.0 needs qt2 and Websphere Studio Application Developper (WSAD) needs libstdc++2.10. These apps will be made gcc 3.x compliant very soon by their respective vendors since both Mandrake and RedHat are migrating to 3.x. I think it's important for 9.0 to not break compatibility with this type of application. It will and Mandrake will not be the only distro suffering from this in the short term. Just put off upgrading until the comercial vendors offer compliant products. This is not Mandrake's fault, rather it is because of gcc. Irritating, yes, needed, yes. Greetings, Jaco

[Cooker] 9.0 Beta 1: Autostart app for Windows
Here are the problems: 1. When I insert CD1 into my CD drive under Windows XP the Mandrake Autostart application starts. The first thing that is wrong is that It says Linux Mandrake 8.2 in the title bar but it should say Linux Mandrake 9.0. 2. The window has no button in the taskbar. And if you switch to another window it is difficult to switch back to Autostart. 3. When you click on Quick install guide or Linux-Mandrake tutorial (it should ne Linux Mandrake tutorial in my opinion, same as the title of window) it always lunches Internet Explorer. Even if I set Mozilla or Opera to be default browser on my system. So Autostart should lunch the default system browser and not only IE. 4. Autostart looks very arhaic. Like apps vere in the days of Windows 3.xx. What about updating it to look more modern? That's it for now. Will install it and test it more. -- Live long and prosper!

[Cooker] VIA-Rhine timeout problems
Not a bug in mandrake specifically, more a bug in the linux kernel. The default via-rhine driver in the 2.4 kernel has problems resetting the chip on the VIA-Rhine VT6120 and the VT86C100A during a TXAbort. This causes the chip to stall any time load is placed on the network, and the machine has to be powered down to reset it(tried unloading and loading the via-rhine module but this didnt work). Anyway a patch was posted to the kernel mailing list, I tried the patch and it worked perfectly for me, and other people have reported good results with it. [Cooker] Installation report
Hi, Here's my installation report. NFS network installation failed everytime, usually right after all packages were installed. Looked like a bad crash (stacks, cpy registers, more of a kernel crash). The server was a Mandrake 8.1 box. This may be the almighty NFS ghost though. After switching to local scsi hd disk, the installation was troublefree. Swedish locale, no problem. Had to handle a problem with Cisco vpnclient sourcecode (3rd party software, kernel module) that worked because gcc 2.96 was very forgiving and gcc 3.1 is not :) Will tell Cisco. Gnome 2: The terminal seems like 7 bit ascii from a swedish point of view. National characters å, ä, ö translates to e, d, v on output. The remaining gnome tools seems to get the characters right though. Who put the main menu up north and why isn't the placement easily configurable? It is still not obvious how to connect mime types and file extensions to applications... Back to KDE in a hurry :) KDE 3: Keeps displaying the first time wizard so I can setup KDE over and over :) fam (File Activity Monitor) is being an *ss. If you watch a file as it's being downloaded from mozilla in konqueror, CPU load will be high and the icon will flicker wildly. This is even more fun if you download the file onto the kde desktop. fam will create a file lock on /mnt/cdrom (if it's explored) and make it hard to unmount the cd sometimes. Visit /mnt with a bootfloppy in the drive and it will start ticking, reading the floppy. It will continue to do this forever even if you exit konqueror. fam? Don't know, but it is annoying after a while :) I've seen stuff like this on MDK8.2 as well, I think it started with the KDE3 packages I installed. Re: [Cooker] My 9.0 Beta Report
I had the same thing happen yesterday, when cdrecord reported not finding any CD/RW devices on my system. I found out by looking at the output from 'lsmod' that the ide-scsi modules wasn't loaded. I was able to use 'modprobe ide-scsi' to load it manually, Similar problem with my Creative Audigy sound card. The module wasn't being loaded at boot time, causing kde's sound demon to complain at login. I was able to load the module using 'modprobe audigy' which fixed it and got sound working again. Also, regarding the sound settings, there were 2 entries in the modules.conf file like this: alias sound emu10k1 alias sound-slot-0 audigy which was causing the emu10k1 driver version 0.19 to be loaded twice and the 0.17 driver to be loaded once, resulting in 3 audio drivers loaded when only one is needed. It looks like just having 'alias sound-slot-0 audigy' is sufficient to get the driver loaded just once. Re: [Cooker] 9.0 beta1
kpersonalizer should only run the first time you log in to the system after an install and remember your choices for subsequent log-ins. It isn't doing that. Instead, every time you log in, it runs again, as if this were the first time. I have even tried faking the .kde3/share/config/kpersonalizer .rc file by creating a FirstLogin=false entry under [General], as was suggested here a few weeks back, but that didn't help. The new .rc file gets overwritten with a blank one, and kpersonalizer still runs every time. A quick workaround is to click quit and then choose Quit and revert to keep your current settings without having to run through the whole setup again and again. - Original Message - From: Frederic Crozat [EMAIL PROTECTED] Newsgroups: liste.cooker To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, July 24, 2002 6:11 AM Subject: Re: [Cooker] 9.0 beta1 On Wed, 24 Jul 2002 14:01:32 +0200, Peter Ruskin wrote: That damned kpersonalizer still runs every time - it's a real switchoff. no response to nautilus on command line. had to [ctrl-alt-bksace] to get out of gnome. The install process listed the amount of space = my / partition. There was nothing indicating that it would use the other partitions in fstab (such as /usr) 3. It did modify /etc/fstab -- it changed my /dosd mount point to /mnt/windows. 4. when I pressed the cancel button, during the package install process -- it did nothing. I would expect it to stop at the point the user told it to cancel. I don't mean the install all together, just the package installation. Let me know how I can be of futher assistance. Nasa

Always wanted to get into perl, anyway. So I will put some messages into it like, you know, You are here and Here's the array:. I mean, install should work, list_modules has the mods, install_steps_i wants them and modules should go ahead. Unfortunately, I, err..., wiped my mirror in an extremely improbable incident related to sudo. Thanks to backups it'll be back in 2 hrs when the updates have come in again. - Mark

I am not on my PC) and then go back to give me the same options once again. I had to push past and exit install. Which may be the reason for my failed boot. since this code is being changed for beta2, it will hopefully be fixed :)

Re: [Cooker] mouse weirdness (dubble clicking)
Am I really the only one with this issue? It's driving me crazy... Stefan Since a number of weeks my mouse is dubbleclicking when I do a single click. It seems that it puts a click every time the switch of the button changes state: unpressed -- pressed=click pressed -- unpressed=click while I would expect: unpressed -- pressed= pressed -- unpressed=click It's esspecially noticeable when I try to restore a window from the taskbar (in icewm), the window apears and then disapears with the same mouseclick. With mozilla's tabbed browsing, when deleting one tab, two are deleted, the equivalent of clicking the X twice. Are there more people that have this problem? with kind regards, Stefan van der Eijk PS: Mouse in question os a Logitech iFeel Mouseman, connected to USB, mousedrake: USB|Wheel.

I hear that the AMD cpus sometimes behave badly with the Intel Pentium paging scheme, but works well with the old 386 scheme. That's only some models of the Athlon. but never any crashing like you are experiencing. (Somtimes for other reasons, but it's cooker, so I don't complain much... ;^) ) 8.2 does the same thing on a lot of people's machines, well, only when you use the crappy Mandrake kernel. Use your own and it's fine. I'm disappointed to hear a Cooker user is still experiencing it. __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Health - Feel better, live better http://health.yahoo.com
