[Cooker] BETA 1 installation problems

2002-07-24 Thread mika . laitio

Other problems I had.
1) Gnome toolbar was empty (I do not know is this a bug)
  a) I made quite small install where I only selected GNOME not KDE,
multimedia, officetools, etc.
  b) reboot and logged in
  c) Gnome toolbar is totally empty. (I needed to start there all
applets starting from the GNOME-menu)
I do not know is this bug, but at least I thought in the beginning
that installation has failed somehow.

2) Harddrake does not start
  a) Fresh install
  b) harddrake is in the configuration menus but does not start

3) Mandrake install does not regognize JFS-volumes which are formatted in
the OS/2.
  a) I created and formatted 2 partition to JFS in the OS/2. Partitions
where
/dev/hdb5
/dev/hdb6
  b) I started Mandrake installation and tried to install Mandrake to
/dev/hdb5
  c) Mandrake installation does not recognize the type /dev/hdb5 and
/dev/hdb6 to JFS-partition (formatted to that in the OS/2)
  d) I needed to re-change the type of /dev/hdb5 (where I wanted to
install Mandrake) to JFS again and format that during the linux-install.
  e) FAT and FAT32 partitions where automatically mounted under
/mnt/... but /dev/hdb6 was not. (which is JFS partition formatted in the
OS/2)
  f) With command mount -t jfs /dev/hdb6 /mnt/os2jfs I was able to
mount this drive.

So there were two problems, steps
c)
f)It would be nice if Mandrake could do step f) during the
install automatically in a same way that it handles FAT-drives.

4) Gnome dictionary applet hanged totally
  a) I was not connected to the network
  b) I wrote some text to the dictionary applet and pressed enter...
  c) Total hang, after one minute I got some empty error-message boxes
and I was able to kill the applet.

  Hi.

Would you mind adding the soft links below to this package, because when
I configure and compile php from source it has a hard time to find the
  libs. Thanks in advance.

 Hmm, why in /usr/lib?

ld knows about /lib by defualt, doesn't it?

Damn... It seems that it was enough to pass:

LIBS=-lttf -lfreetype -lpng -ljpeg -lz -lnsl -lreadline -lhistory -lncurses

when configuring and building the php-4.3.0-dev bransch, otherwise it
couldn't find the libs unless those softlinks were in-place.

It's nice to have up to date libraries but removing old ones

 libstdc++2.10.

They will break even if the compatibility libraries are there. (C++ ABI
issues). These apps will be made gcc 3.x compliant very soon by their
respective vendors since both Mandrake and RedHat are migrating to 3.x.

I think it's important for 9.0 to not break compatibility with this
 type of application.

It will and Mandrake will not be the only distro suffering from this in
the short term. Just put off upgrading until the comercial vendors offer
compliant products. This is not Mandrake's fault, rather it is because
of gcc. Irritating, yes, needed, yes.

[Cooker] 9.0 Beta 1: Autostart app for Windows

2002-07-24 Thread Jure Repinc

Here are the problems:

1.
When I insert CD1 into my CD drive under Windows XP the Mandrake
Autostart application starts. The first thing that is wrong is that It
says Linux Mandrake 8.2 in the title bar but it should say Linux
Mandrake 9.0.

2.
The window has no button in the taskbar. And if you switch to another
window it is difficult to switch back to Autostart.

3.
When you click on Quick install guide or Linux-Mandrake tutorial (it
should ne Linux Mandrake tutorial in my opinion, same as the title of
window) it always lunches Internet Explorer. Even if I set Mozilla or
Opera to be default browser on my system. So Autostart should lunch the
default system browser and not only IE.

4.
Autostart looks very arhaic. Like apps vere in the days of Windows 3.xx.
What about updating it to look more modern?

That's it for now. Will install it and test it more.

[Cooker] VIA-Rhine timeout problems

2002-07-24 Thread O'Riordan, Kevin

Not a bug in mandrake specifically, more a bug in the linux kernel. The
default via-rhine driver in the 2.4 kernel has problems resetting the chip
on the VIA-Rhine VT6120 and the VT86C100A during a TXAbort. This causes the
chip to stall any time load is placed on the network, and the machine has to
be powered down to reset it(tried unloading and loading the via-rhine module
but this didn’t work). Anyway a patch was posted to the kernel mailing list,
I tried the patch and it worked perfectly for me, and other people have
reported good results with it. Any chance of it being included in the
Mandrake kernel for 9.0?

I've attached the patch btw.

[Cooker] Installation report

2002-07-24 Thread Johan Ferner

Hi,

Here's my installation report.
NFS network installation failed everytime, usually right after all
packages were installed.
Looked like a bad crash (stacks, cpy registers, more of a kernel crash).
The server was a Mandrake 8.1 box. This may be the almighty NFS ghost
though.
After switching to local scsi hd disk, the installation was troublefree.
Swedish locale, no problem.
Had to handle a problem with Cisco vpnclient sourcecode (3rd party
software, kernel module)
that worked because gcc 2.96 was very forgiving and gcc 3.1 is not :)
Will tell Cisco.

Gnome 2:
The terminal seems like 7 bit ascii from a swedish point of view.
National characters å, ä, ö translates to e, d, v on output. The
remaining gnome tools seems
to get the characters right though.

Who put the main menu up north and why isn't the placement easily
configurable?
It is still not obvious how to connect mime types and file extensions to
applications...
Back to KDE in a hurry :)

KDE 3:
Keeps displaying the first time wizard so I can setup KDE over and over :)

fam (File Activity Monitor) is being an *ss. If you watch a file as it's
being downloaded
from mozilla in konqueror, CPU load will be high and the icon will
flicker wildly. This is
even more fun if you download the file onto the kde desktop.
fam will create a file lock on /mnt/cdrom (if it's explored) and make it
hard to unmount the
cd sometimes.
Visit /mnt with a bootfloppy in the drive and it will start ticking,
reading the floppy.
It will continue to do this forever even if you exit konqueror.
fam? Don't know, but it is annoying after a while :)
I've seen stuff like this on MDK8.2 as well, I think it started with the
KDE3 packages I
installed.

Konqueror with integrated terminal window: Complains about a font (13)

I had the same thing happen yesterday, when cdrecord reported not finding
any CD/RW devices on my system. I found out by looking at the output from
'lsmod' that the ide-scsi modules wasn't loaded. I was able to use
'modprobe ide-scsi' to load it manually,

Similar problem with my Creative Audigy sound card. The module wasn't
being loaded at boot time, causing kde's sound demon to complain at
login. I was able to load the module using 'modprobe audigy' which fixed
it and got sound working again.

Also, regarding the sound settings, there were 2 entries in the modules.conf
file like this:

alias sound emu10k1
alias sound-slot-0 audigy

which was causing the emu10k1 driver version 0.19 to be loaded twice and
the 0.17 driver to be loaded once, resulting in 3 audio drivers loaded when
only one is needed. It looks like just having 'alias sound-slot-0 audigy'
is
sufficient to get the driver loaded just once.

I'm still trying to figure out why my burner is not detected. With my
limited perl knowledge this is rather hard. Please bear with me if my
assuptions and/or conclusions are obviously wrong.

Maybe the burner isn't found because I do HD installs?

I see that in detect_devices.pm /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info is used. Well,
that doesn't exist when I install cooker. In fact, there's no cdrom
related module loaded.

Doing some comparative work with 8.2 I see that the above cdrom/info
appears right after setupSCSI where the cdrom modules get loaded. In
cooker, these modules are not loaded (at least on my box).

8.2 - install_steps_interactive.pm sub setupSCSI ...
modules::load_ide()
9.0 - install_steps_interactive.pm sub setupSCSI ...
modules::load_category('disk/cdrom')

any ideas what might be cause that the cdrom modules don't get loaded?

Re: [Cooker] 9.0 beta1

2002-07-24 Thread Max Bernard [mbernard]

kpersonalizer should only run the first time you log in to the system after
an
install and remember your choices for subsequent log-ins. It isn't doing
that.
Instead, every time you log in, it runs again, as if this were the first
time.

I have even tried faking the .kde3/share/config/kpersonalizer .rc file by
creating a FirstLogin=false entry under [General], as was suggested here
a few weeks back, but that didn't help. The new .rc file gets overwritten
with a blank one, and kpersonalizer still runs every time.

A quick workaround is to click quit and then choose Quit and revert to
keep your current settings without having to run through the whole setup
again and again.

The cursor will not move in the second window, and you cannot type anything.
If you close the 1st window, then you can move the cursor and edit the 2nd file.

I use nedit-5.3-1mdk.i586.rpm since today, but the bug was already existing in the
pre-5.3 versions.

My cooker version was 100% updated 2 days ago (July 22th).

And I have something that may be related to the bug, maybe not. When I launch nedit, I

XmFontListCreate() is an obsolete function!

I do not have this problem on Solaris (sparc, 2.6) with nedit-5.3.

[Cooker] installation disk has not options for mount points

2002-07-24 Thread Nathan A. Smith

Hi,

I sent an earlier message about this problem, but I have lost it and
talking on the cooker channel was told that pixel replied. So I am
restating the problem and answering his questions:

1. The install process at no time presented or offered to present mount
points for configuration or what it was using. I tried both normal and
expert.

2. The install process listed the amount of space = my / partition.
There was nothing indicating that it would use the other partitions in
fstab (such as /usr)

3. It did modify /etc/fstab -- it changed my /dosd mount point to
/mnt/windows.

4. when I pressed the cancel button, during the package install process
-- it did nothing. I would expect it to stop at the point the user told
it to cancel. I don't mean the install all together, just the package
installation.

Let me know how I can be of futher assistance.

[Cooker] Mandrake 9.0 Beta 1

2002-07-24 Thread David Bolin

Installation Problems:

Other than the previously noted problem with the install disk not being
recognized and having to select cdrom to get it started again I have run into
the following problems:

Boot Config:
During the boot configuration I was asked to insert Disk 1. Once I did this
it hit the cdrom and then asked me once again to insert the Installation Disk
1. I then tried each of the disks to make sure that the message was messed
up, but it would except none of the disks. I finally had to cancel. The
Boot configuration went on from that point and I was able to see what was
going into lilo and accept it. (Side note, not sure if it is related to this
error or the next one but once I rebooted I was able to see lilo and select
how I wanted to boot. When linux tried to boot I was rewarded by the kernel
panic message. Unable to mount vfs)

XConfiguration:
Stuck in a constant loop while offering me the choice between 3.3.6 : 4.2.? :
or 3.3.6 Experimental. None of the options would get me out of the loop. I
would select one and then it would give me an error message (sorry I don't
have it with me right now. I am not on my PC) and then go back to give me the
same options once again. I had to push past and exit install. Which may be
the reason for my failed boot.

Here is a brief view of my system components

Thought so too. Now I'm sitting here with O'Reilly and struggle my way
through. Always wanted to get into perl, anyway. So I will put some
messages into it like, you know, You are here and Here's the array:.
I mean, install should work, list_modules has the mods, install_steps_i
wants them and modules should go ahead.

Unfortunately, I, err..., wiped my mirror in an extremely improbable

Re: [Cooker] mouse weirdness (dubble clicking)

2002-07-24 Thread Stefan van der Eijk

Am I really the only one with this issue?

It's driving me crazy...

Stefan

Since a number of weeks my mouse is dubbleclicking when I do a single
click. It seems that it puts a click every time the switch of the
 button changes state:

 unpressed -- pressed=click
 pressed -- unpressed=click

 while I would expect:

 unpressed -- pressed= pressed -- unpressed=click

It's esspecially noticeable when I try to restore a window from the
taskbar (in icewm), the window apears and then disapears with the same
mouseclick. With mozilla's tabbed browsing, when deleting one tab, two
are deleted, the equivalent of clicking the X twice.

Are there more people that have this problem?

 with kind regards,

 Stefan van der Eijk

PS: Mouse in question os a Logitech iFeel Mouseman, connected to USB,
 mousedrake: USB|Wheel.

8.2 does the same thing on a lot of people's machines,
well, only when you use the crappy Mandrake kernel.
Use your own and it's fine. I'm disappointed to hear
a Cooker user is still experiencing it.
