Re: [Cooker-firewall] disk space needed for mnf?

2002-10-14 Thread Florin

You can install the firewall on a 500 Mb but then you should eventually
reconfigure the rotates because otherwise the system will soon become
unusable with a lack of free space error messages ...

The logs take much space after a while ... so that's why you have to
redefine the log rotates ...

cheers,

bascule [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

i'm afraid i'm still not being clear, i'm not asking how much space mnf takes
up, or how much it will use after being installed, but, how much is necessary
in order to install it in the first place, as i have said before, despite
having 1gb over two equal disks and only 200mb actually filled, an upgrade of
snf using cooker failed due to 'lack of space', clearly the upgrade process
required far more space on my disks than i was actually going to choose
packages for, i'm trying to ascertain the smallest disk i need to install mnf
on, i'm aware that post-install space is used up by urpmi and var, that is
why i currently have /var on a separate disk, however since mnf is only
taking up 200mb of space i would like to remove one of the disks for
something else and put /var on a smaller partition, if mnf won't install on
one 500mb disk, or future upgrades via a cooker upgrade or just using urpmi
will still fail then i can't, because i'll need to have the spare space even
if i'm not using it so that i can keep the system uptodate,
perhaps i'm the only one who had an 'out of space' error trying to upgrade
from cooker and that is causing the confusion,
when i refer to (s)mnf i mean selecting snf-en only and letting the install
continue from there, nothing that is not provided by that,

If you lack disk space :
  - turn OFF the IDS ;
  - turn OFF the proxy server ;
  - do not log packets (default policies log the rejected packets) ;

[Cooker] Xft hack

Hi,

I remember that someone from MDK team wants to start upgrading freetype
libs and look into font issues.

Perhaps this could come in handy:

From screenshots it looks VERY good!

Re: [Cooker] Xft hack

2002-10-14 Thread Ibukun Olumuyiwa

It does look a lot better than the present freetype. Other than the fact
that small font sizes tend to look a bit fuzzier than they should be, this
is a lot nicer and more uniform-looking than the present Xft, IMO. Hope it
makes it into CVS. :) I'm using it now on my machine and Konqueror looks
even better than before :)

Yup. I just made a _TEST_ rpm that uses the patch build against current

That's what I also did and what I recommend to everone using Mandrake 9.0.

Yes, supermount is knackered (f*cked) in 9.0. Hopefully we will soon have a new kernel
rpm with the offending patches removed/fixed.

You can use autofs to cahieve a similar effect, but the default 60 second timeout is
too long, also pressing the eject button does not work unless autofs has already
unmounted the media.

 Any ideas?

 Thanks,

brocken on my computer. Attached yo will find the report of the KDE
   Crash Manager:

I also get kmix crashing (latest cooker) when I try to run it.
(Before anybody asks, SOUND in general is working fine in the KDE
3.1beta -- arts works fine, system notifications, window sounds,
  everything. Just not kmix).

The backtrace from the KDE Crash Handler says:

  0x40ec3739 in wait4 () from /lib/i686/libc.so.6
  #0 0x40ec3739 in wait4 () from /lib/i686/libc.so.6

  #3  0x4039a532 in KCrash::defaultCrashHandler(int) (sig=6) at
  kcrash.cpp:235

I do get a bit more info if I run it from the command line (from
  stdout):

kmix: Number of drivers : 2
  kmix: Mixer_ALSA::openMixer - Enter
kmix: ERROR: kmix: Mixer cannot be found.
Please check that the soundcard is installed and that
  the soundcard driver is loaded.
  kmix:
kmix: ERROR: kmix:You do not have permission to access the mixer
device. Please check your operating systems manual to allow the
  access. kmix: control.c:224: snd_ctl_card_info: Assertion `ctl
info' failed. ERROR: KUniqueApplication: DCOP communication error!

The no permission error for the mixer obviously is wrong:

 I would try `chmod g+rw /dev/sound/*`

This would be possible solution, but as ROOT I get the same error
message. And I'm the owner of the /dev/sound/* devices. So I have had
the right permissions. Other MIX tools like aumix are working without
any problem.

[Cooker] The bug of Canon-backends of SANE with Canocsan300by ISA SCSI

2002-10-14 Thread Till Kamppeter

I have made available debug-enabled Mandrake packages of SANE now:

sane-1.0.8-6mdk.src.rpm
libsane1-1.0.8-6mdk.i586.rpm
libsane1-devel-1.0.8-6mdk.i586.rpm
sane-backends-1.0.8-6mdk.i586.rpm
sane-frontends-1.0.8-2mdk.src.rpm
sane-frontends-1.0.8-2mdk.i586.rpm

Connor, and everyone else having a Canoscan connected with an ISA SCSI
controller, please test doing the following steps:

Please download them from http://www.linuxprinting.org/till/tmp/
(immediately) or from a Cooker mirror (probably tomorrow) and put them
all in one directory. Then upgrade with

rpm -Fvh *sane*1.0.8-[26]mdk.i586.rpm

After having done so, configure your scanner and do

scanimage -T

This will probably produce a file named core or core.XXX with XXX
being an integer number (it must be the last entry of ls -ltr core*).
Run the command

gdb -c core.XXX

where you replace core.XXX by the name of your core file. Now you will
have a (gdb) prompt. Type backtrace and press Enter. Then type
quit and press Enter.

If you don have gdb on your system, install it with urpmi gdb.

Send us all the screen output of both scanimage -T and gdb. Try also
other things and send us screen output of the program called and of gdb.

If you have another RPMish distro than Mandrake, try to rebuild the RPMs
for your distro:

rpm --rebuild sane-1.0.8-6mdk.src.rpm
rpm --rebuild sane-frontends-1.0.8-2mdk.src.rpm

Perhaps you must install a package named rpm-build or rpm-rebuild
for that. You also need C compiler, Perl, and make on your machine. If
more packages are needed you will get appropriate screen messages. Then
proceed as shown above.

Please use Reply All in your mail program when replying to this, so
that all people who got this mail also will get your answer.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

 Till Kamppeter wrote:

That's no problem:

Uninstall the SANE backends with

   rpm -e --nodeps sane-backends

Install checkinstall:

   urpmi checkinstall

If this does not work, add a mirror carrying the contrib packages to
your rpmdrake/urpmi sources and try again.

Get sane-backends-1.0.9pre1 or better the current CVS when the CVS
server is back again (Use this version because I plan to package SANE
1.0.9 for Mandrake 9.0, especially because I made the Epson Perfection
1260 running together with the maintainer of the plustek backend). Add
your code which you havn't checked in yet and use checkinstall instead
of make install to make it easier to de-install this SANE version and
cleanly install anotherone.

Do not run scannerdrake any more now, and if you have a multi-function
device from HP also do not run printerdrake. These programs try to
install the old packages again (and will choke due to the conflicts with
the SANE RPM which checkinstall has installed).

The xsane provided by Mandrake Linux works also with SANE 1.0.9. If the
scanimage and xscanimage do not work, switch to
sane-frontends-1.0.9pre1 the same way as with the sane-backends-1.0.9pre1.

 Till,

am I right that you are Mandrake's maintainer for Sane?

If you are, here are a few requests/comments:

According to the backtrace information posted by Henning on the mailing
list, the segfault occurs somewhere in the sanei_scsi library.
Unfortunately, the debug symbols seem to be removed from the binaries in
the Mandrake rpm files, so we don't get very precise information about
the location of the segfault. WHat Mitsuru and I would like to know is
where exactly the segfault happens. So it would be best, if we and the
users who have the Canoscan 300 and the other hardware, for which the
segfault occurs, could get the regular Sane files from Mandrake 8.0 --
but _with_ debug symbols, and also the source files, if Mandrake applied
some patches to them. Using the most recent sources from Sane's CVS
server could result in different behaviour.

[Cooker] Better thinkpad support for Mandrake

2002-10-14 Thread Buchan Milne

I have an IBM thinkpad, and I had problems getting everything to work
under Mandrake 9.0.

It turns out the biggest problem was pcmcia using irq3, preventing me
from using the serial port (irq 4 was used by IR port IIRC). I don't
know if there's any way this can be fixed without unnecessarily
reserving irq3.

Then, there are some kernel modules (thinkpad), and some utils (tpctl)
which allow you to enable/disable hardware, and a tool for also
auto-throttling the CPU based on load level (to conserve power, the CPU
is underclocked when not busy). All these tools require the thinkpad
kernel modules.

Would it be possible to have the thinkpad kernel modules in the Mandrake
kernel? Or should I maintain my own RPMs of those for the moment (like
NVidia drivers)?

Files:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/tpctl/
(thinkpad=kernel modules, tpctl=user space tools).

If these can go in, I can also take a look at
http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/tpb/

I don't know if this is the answer, but I found that in the archives:

Subject: Re: [Cooker] Galeon/Mozilla/Anti-aliased text
From: Frederic Crozat [EMAIL PROTECTED]

...
Hmm... By the way, is there a way to turn AA off for Mozilla/GTK?

In /usr/lib/mozilla-1.1b/defaults/pref/unix.js
replace
pref(font.FreeType2.enable, true);
with
pref(font.FreeType2.enable, false);

Hope this will do,

Is this experience over? It was nice to have a nearly real-time

[Cooker] Looking for a solution

2002-10-14 Thread Lonnie Borntreger

I've looked high and low, but cannot find an opensource solution for a
work situation.

I'm running Cooker at work. They have the corporate standard instant
messenger setup of MS Exchange Messaging. The .NET Messaging client for
Windows can be obtained with that protocol. I've found a ton of
opensource IM clients that can do MSN messaging, but none that can do MS
Exchange Messaging. (I've even managed to get .NET Messenger installed
under CrossOver Office, but it won't run.)

Does anyone out there know of a Linux client (or gAIM/Jabber plug-in)
that works with MS Exchange Messaging? I don't even care if it's
current. I'll have some co-workers (also on Linux), help me update it
to a modern environment like cooker.

We're trying to keep from being forced onto Windows just for an IM
standard.

[Cooker] Mandrake/Kernel/GCC?

2002-10-14 Thread crazy mand

This is the first time in my linux experience with a
frozen linux box in an official released version.

I tried to show my little bro how to build a
linux-from-scratch box using Mandrake 9.0.
Supprisingly enough, during the step of building gcc
3.2, it froze producibly. I downloaded and installed
a vanilla 2.4.19 but it didn't help. I also installed
gcc 2.9.6 instead of default gcc 3.2, but that didn't
help either.

Has anyone encountered the same problem?

My box is Abit KG-7, 1.4GHz, 512 RDRAM.

Thanks!

There should be no connection at all between ethernet and filesystems. I
suspect that the problem would be with SuperMount, if your floppy is giving
you grief.

The command adds the journal to the filesystem as a hidden file without
