Boot to init 3 and then use startx or Xtart.
Now when you log out of X you will be dropped back to init 3.

I have run into the same situation and though it does happen with other
cards it is more problematic with ATI.
For some reason if you boot to init 5 and then logout, shutting down dm
fails and thus the black screen and apparent lock-up.
Bypassing dm eliminates the problem.

Yes, but these are now 'old' driver Not the new 4349 drivers.

The only rpms available for the 4349 are on the nvidia ftp dl page and
are for SuSE only.
But even these, as well as the gz, are the last such pkgs that nvidia
will offer.
All future releases will be offered only in .run format.

[Cooker] Status of Java in Konqueror?

I notice that sites with Java applets on them show me a nice box

install of Mandrake for over a year, is this an artifact of long,
slow upgrade path? Or, is Java still broken in Konqueror?

Be nice if there was a thumb nail index so that you could preview the
themes.
Maybe you could steal the sample shots from kde-look.org

I really like the gold theme.
It is 3d, shadowed and animated.

For any who are not already aware hdlist2 is not in sync but he pkg is
on the mirrors and can be dled and installed manually.

For an upgrade installation the nv driver is used and IIRC XF86conf-4 so
reflects that But Load 'glx' is not removed from the module section and
it is this which causes X to fail.

Since the nvidia drivers are only supplied through either the club or in
the powerpack and are in no form supported by Mandrake but offered only
because of user request it should be the users responsibility to make
any adjust which are necessitated by the usage of said drivers.

And I am not just blowing smoke at others, I have 2 systems with nvidia
cards and use their drivers on both.

As I noted in my response to bugzilla the drivers are not the same.

audigy=emu10k2 and is "supposed" to work with audigy cards and all
SBLive cards.
Unfortunately there are times it does not work with SBLive.
The problems seems not to be card specific but is a combination of the
card and the actual hardware configuration of the system.

The emu10k1 driver works only for SBLive not for audigy cards.

Hi Clive,
There is a workaround posted in the bugzilla entry
[Bug 1471]. It solved the problem for me. The bug is very
long, so below I have included the snippet with the work-
around:

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-02-23 20:24 ---
While a bugfix is made, there is a way to manually correct this bug. You have to
copy the files kfmclient.desktop, kfmclient_dir.desktop, kfmclient_html.desktop
and kfmclient_war.desktop from /usr/share/applnk/System/ to your
~/.kde/share/applnk-mdk/ directory. This will fix the annoying dialog pop-up.

I hope this can help those for whom the problem persists.
My guess is that it occurs on systematically upgraded
systems, but not on clean installs. (I have not done a
complete install in over one year...)

Unless I have missed an announcement somewhere within the last day or so
you can not have DRI with the Rage/Radeon Unless the drm module is

And the Only rational and safe manner in which to install the 'new' -13
kernel is to boot to an old kernel
rpm -e kernel-source kernel-doc kernel-2.4.21.0.13mdk-1-1mdk
and then install the 'new' -13 kernel pkgs.

How is the DrakX going to handle this if the user has the 'old' -13
kernel and the user is running the 9.1 installation as an upgrade?

That is true.
But if you check other specs which use png sources you will find that in
most they remain as png.
A bzip2 png will require nearly 50% more space than the png itself.

Bug 1307 was filed by me. It still exists and is different from 1160.
It exists with XFree86-4.3-2mdk and kernel-2.4.21.0.13mdk. It is the
same as bugs 2741 and 2043. Its status should not be changed without
fixing the problem with DRI and radeon.

[Cooker] dup-invalid bugs

2003-03-10 Thread Charles A Edwards
bugs #1160, 1307, 1026, 3099, and 3126 and all submitted by the same
individual and and all variations on the same.
Dri and radeon.
These are not valid bugs in that he is running current XFree but an
older kernel which provides an old drm mod.

Could someone change the status on the above to closed/invalid.

Also bug #3035 xfce is invalid and its status should also be changed to
closed/invalid

Thanks

Using auto-select just updated both XFree and ati.2

Just installed on a system with a Radeon 32MB DDR.
DRI is enabled and working but appears to be sub-par to that achieved
if using the default XFree driver.
Tested only with glxgears so this is by no means scientific.

As this is an experimental pkg it might be wise to note that when this
pkg is installed the current /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers is renamed
to drivers_old and a 'new' /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers is created
which contains Only the ati2 drivers.

But Newbles are the ones who are going to have no idea what to do.
I thought one of the plans was to get more people to use and support
Mandrake.
If they can install another distro;be it RH, SuSE, hell even Evil Linux;
and there LAN can connect to the NET out of the box why should they want
to use Mandrake and have to find out how to fix it.

Are you using fixed or dynamic IP?

As happens I do know what causes the problem on my system.
/etc/resolv.conf is an empty file
If edited and 'nameserver 192.168.0.1' is added Net access works.
The same is accomplished by installing and running dhcpcd.

To me the benefit of using dhcpcd is that I only need 1 pkg not the 4
installed by Network set-up/drakconnect.
Dhcpcd is also all that was Required and installed in previous Mandrake
installations for this set-up.

It makes no difference.
All are still installed on my machine, but none other than dhcpcd is
needed.

I can remove the others and still access the Net and test drakconnect
with each release of drakxtools to see if any fix has been applied.
But irregardless of what other pkgs it installs as long as I have dhcpcd
installed and running I can access the Net.

Drakconnect does not work with this type set-up, I stated so in my orig
post and in previous as well as bugzilla reports, testing is the Only
reason I would run it again.

[Cooker] RC2 and Networking

2003-03-04 Thread Charles A Edwards
Same problem exist in RC2 as in RC1 and all Betas

Home LAN
6 systems, 5 connecting to internet though gateway system via dhcp with
each system needing a static IP.

During clean RC installation/Networking, either automatic or if manually
configured during Summary, all hardware component are detected and
properly configured and the pkgs dhcp-common, dhcp-client, and tmdns
are installed.

The problem is that this Does Not properly set-up this type system.
Once the new install is booted even though everything appears in order
and drakconnect even tells you that your network is properly configured
No Internet connection is possible.

/etc/sysconfig/network
NETWORK=yes

/etc/host
127.0.0.1localhost

You can start editing files galore if you aren't a Newbie, and even have
a clue as to what files to even look for, or if you are a Newbie and
this your first taste of Linux you could and might just say fuck-it and
boot back to Windows where everything works.

The solution is really quite simple.
For this type of network connection you do not need dhcp-common.
You do not need dhcp-client.
You do not need tmdns.

You Need dhcpd.
Once installed you need only run
# dhcpcd -d
the system will be assigned a static IP address, in my case it is
192.168.0.6 for machine #6 on the chain.
On subsequent boots dhcpcd will be auto started during boot.

/etc/sysconfig/network and /etc/host will not be changed but a new
config file will be present /etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.info

[EMAIL PROTECTED] charles]$ cat /etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.info

If the network configuration, this also applies to the stand alone
drakconnect, is not going to be fixed to resolve this issue could there
not at the least be an errata posted that addresses it.

Even adding to skip list does not prevent the requirement.

I looked at the spec (had to dl the src.rpm to get it)
Other than the 12 I could see nothing that would cause urpmi to think it
Had to be installed.

I have jackit installed on 2 systems and on both jackit-realtime was
added to skip.list and Not installed.
On a 3rd system Without jackit installed --auto-select still requires 1

Why is this 0.12mdk rather than 0.11mdk as is current kernel?
With it set as 0.12mdk, unless it is added to skip list, --auto-select

It does this already. Before the bug is reported, there is nothing to

[Cooker] Freeze or not to freeze

2003-02-25 Thread Charles A Edwards

I thought we were in a version freeze except in the case of bug-fixes.

Yet today we have new versions of vte, links, and bluefish.
Are there special circumstances which apply to the above named pkgs?

I know the %changelog say "new release" but is not going from
bluefish-0.8-2mdk to bluefish-0.9-1mdk considered a version change?

I am not objecting to these upgrades being included just trying to
discern why it is allowable for them but not for others such as
xfce-3.8.18

Hi,
I have done some more investigation on the vim package, and
there is something strange going on with it, or possibly with RPM.
Some expert intervention is needed I think...

# rpm -ivh --force vim-common-6.1-36mdk.i586.rpm

So, I use "rpm -Vp" on the package file to see if something is wrong:

You should able to upload with same release, it will replace existing
devel and .src rpms and add the base rpm, that is if your upload
permissions will allow it.
Otherwise you will have to upload with %release = %release++

Another note, on which I have already posted, is that if dhcp is
selected then dhcp-client and dhcp-server are installed regardless of
the connection type or the hardware detected.
In the case of LANs and also with some cable/dsl modems/routers dhcpcd
is needed and Not the server/client pkgs.
This same bug/problem has hampered all 3 9.1 betas as well as the RC1
and also is still done in this manner with current drakconnect as
provided by drakxtools-9.1-4mdk.

I rebuilt the src.rpms for both pygnome-1.4.4-2 and pygtk2.0-1.99.15.

The BuildRequires for pygtk2.0-1.99.15 needs to be libglade2.0_0-devel
libgtkglarea2.0-devel rather than just the generic devel pkg.

All resulting rpms installed without complaint or conflict.
Installed eroaster-2.1.0-6 and glimmer also without complaint.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] SPECS]$ eroaster

Tried rebuilding eroaster-2.1.0-6 to see if that would create the correct assoc but
receive the same error when launching the app.
Looks like it's patch time and that's not my dept.

hackeroaster performs without problem with both pygnome-1.4.4-2 and pygtk2.0-1.99.15
installed, made a bak of my mail folder.

Had gramps installed on 1 system and when auto-select updated it , it

[Cooker] eroaster-2.1.0-6mdk

2003-02-20 Thread Charles A Edwards
eroaster-2.1.0-6mdk is no longer a viable rpm.
Due to gnome-python and pygtk2 current rpm can no longer be installed
and existing installation will give either python or bonobo errors.
Current src will rebuild and install but program will give bonobo error.

the eroaster 2.2.0 snapshot available from
ftp://eclipt.uni-klu.ac.at/pub/projects/eroaster/snapshots/

will build, install, launch and most importantly work.

The BuildRequires need to be changed to include new gnome-python and
pygtk2 and exclude the old.
Requires needs to include gnome-python-bonobo and to exclude the
old.

If/when this is again rebuilt the src now contains an icon so Source3

I added the following to my spec and changed the menu entry

mkdir -p $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/usr/share/pixmaps/xcdroast/

[Cooker] RC1 and dhcp problems SOLVED!!!

2003-02-19 Thread Charles A Edwards
My system are networked and all connect to the net via DHCP through a
windows box, short story but don't ask.

All systems on my home LAN, but 1 use, Linskys' nics and tulip driver.
The system I use to test the betas and today the RC1 has, with each,
been unable to connect to the Internet.
eth0 loads at boot and drakconnect gives no error during configuration
but if I use mcc and choose connect, am told connection failed and to
check my configuration using mcc, thats a lot of help.

I checked /etc/host files, changed host names, IP address, used
linuxconf and Nothing worked.

It finally dawned on me this afternoon, while beating on RC1 what the
problem is.
At installation during network set-up, or even afterwards using
drakconnect, if connection type LAN DHCP is selected then dhcp-client
and dhcp-server are installed, which is totally WRONG.
dhcpcd should be installed
^

Once I removed dhcp-server and client and manually installed dhcpcd and
started the daemon I was quickly and effortlessly connect to the
Net.

This resolution may also apply to the bug reports in regard to dhcp and
D-Link cards.

01 January 2003: X-CD-Roast 0.98alpha13 released!

This release fixes the multisession and on-the-fly writing bugs
introduced with 0.98alpha12. Sorry about that.

See the changelog for a complete list of changes.
-
CHANGELOG for X-CD-Roast 0.98alpha13

01.02.03:

don't display warnings about symbolic cdrtools links when nonroot-mode
is disabled. warn user who tries to remaster an ISO-file instead of
using the write-tracks menu. fix to read all the stderr output of
cdrecord

31.12.02:

clean up debug output that contained backspaces.
rollback new child processing code completely - fixes the multisession
problems. rewrite handler for failed ProDVD-key checks.

Changelog is to long to list but if interested it can be found on site.

The current mdk pkg was rebuilt 8/19/02 but was last updated
4/25/02

Not that it will make any difference but the RH rc, and in its time the

Seems sad to me that Mandrake will ship with Old versions of 2 popular

The problem at ATI is they have released bi drivers Only for the
8500 ->up.
I have 2 original Radeons, not some of the cheap ass crap they trying to
pass off as such now, and since 7.2 other than the short period of time
recently when drm was not in the kernel pkg I have had no
performance problem from either card.

I also have 2 nvidia cards, a g2 and a g3 and i use the bi drivers,
which can be fun sometimes when the kernel is updated almost daily,
finally moved the g3 to a 9.0 system.

$ for $ and feature for feature the most stable and dependable cards I
have are the ATI Xpert2000 with rage 128, and again the orig 128 not
the 128 Pro that they are using now.

The only way I see Nvidia considering open sourcing there drivers for
linux would be for the PC gaming industry to make a Serious entry into
the linux market.

I think we should sync with the official spec and then add any working
patches.

I am using 4.6.0 with no patches and have not noted any detrimental or
'strange' behavior, granted I do not use it that often since I normally
work in X with emelfm but I do use it exclusively if working from the
console.

A further note on patchs is that RH has drop all with either the
comment'upstream' or for the most 'no longer works for 4.6.0, need to
evaluate'

mem=nopentium is not a 'magic bullet' that will fix all video problems
in linux.
It only works to address a memory paging error that can occur on AMD
systems using AGP.
What this paging error can cause are completely random X lock-ups.
This problem is not limited to systems with ATI cards but can occur with
Any AGP vid card using hw 3d accel.
I use this append on all my systems some with ATI cards and others with
nvidia.

If the X server will not initiate successfully with dri enabled Then
This Is Not a Problem That men=nopentium Will Have Any Effect Upon.
It is a problem between the 7500 and the drm module.
Though this module is included in the latest mdk kernels it is written
and provided by Gatos Not by mandrakesoft.

I personally like ATI.
I have 2 radeons and 3 Xpert2000 (rage128) but the radeon7500 is a
problematic card and, again, in my opinion a crappy card that was
marketed to compete in the GeForce2 pricerange at the expense of the
quality of the chip-set used.

I an using current cooker on 2 systems, #1 with radeon 64mb ddr and #2
32mb ddr.
Both systems have been running with dri enabled since drm module was
added to kernel.
I have suffered No lockups.

I am I am guessing that you have an AMD cpu, if so add 'mem=nopentium'
to your lilo append and your lock-ups should cease.
