[Cooker] [important for 9.1] software coherency/strategy
Hello, I have noted that on a standard install (with gnome, kde, multimedia, desktop, internet ) there is : - 3 complete Office suites - 5/6 (or more) IRC/messenging client - 1 seti watcher (Ksetiwatch) - no Video Editor/DV cam utils (linuxvideostudio, dvgrab for exemple) - no Multimedia center (as MMboX, Freevo) - I have the feeling that Mandrake can do everything but don't show it ! I'm not sure that the end user prefer have 6 or more IRC/messenging clients and can't sync his DV cam or use a multimedia center (for exemple) than have 2 or 3 IRC/messenging clients and can do everything he want with his machine with a std install. I think a more feature based software strategy could be better, no ? I'm contributor of some packages in contribs : Motion, MMboX (member of dev team), atitvout, boson,...) Contribs repository isn't clearly mentionned to end-user, I have the feeling that only cookers and advanced Mdk users use it :( Can we discuss about software strategy ? I like the Mdk, it's the best OS, but it can be better for the end user simply. Thanks, Florent

What about the gimp, who does not fit very well with all kde apps ? I didn't ask to choose between KDE Gnome (I like both ;). On the other hand, 6 IM client is a lot. [Cooker] [qa] software map
packages mainteners sometimes moves, some packages (in contribs) are orphelans, abandonned. Mdk team cookers, what do you think about a software map, visible on Mdk web site in dev menu, with these infos : - main / contribs - category - last version - a link to software web site - a link to spec file in cvs - active maintener(s) of each package with email in order to join them (bug, new version,...) It could be greet for packages quality, no ? Florent

Gtk library is lighter than qt and, works in all environments, and all Mdk's tools are already in Perl-Gtk, I agree with Mdk to keep Gtk ! Gtk apps can be embeded in KDE control center, there is no matter. Gtk might be lighter than Qt, but if a user has no Gtk-based software, config tools in Gtk are going to be more load for that user than if they were Qt. The flip side of that is also true though, which is why having both options would be ideal. Given limited developer resources though, it would seem logical to me to design for the toolkit of the default desktop. Many major softwares (as Gimp) are in Gtk. Your case (no gtk apps) is too specific. Please don't apply your case to all users. If a user want a minimal system with X or a system with Gnome, windowmaker, flubox, E, do you think he want qt libraries ? I think no. 2 frontends to develop and maintain ? I don't think Mdk team will have the time and it's just a little design issue in config tool. I don't think that is important at this time. As far as embedding the Gtk apps in KDE control center, it's cool that you can do it, but how is it going to look? Fonctionnalities : top Ease of use : top Coherence : top Look : so so but it's not the more important for config tool. And it'll not look so bad. And, if they do that, you'll can navigate in control center (both kde gnome) without a mouse, a feature that MCC don't have at this time. I was not aware of that. Do people actually use KDE and Gnome without a mouse, though? And if user just have misconfigured his mouse ? And if kde have tool in is control center that gnome one haven't ? And for others environments ? In those cases, obviously Mandrake will want to fill in the gap. Most of the folks not using KDE or Gnome probably don't need config tools, but if they do, perhaps Webmin would be a good choice, since it's environment-neutral. They don't want config tools ??? I don't think they'll be agree. They'll consider that as a regression ! I want MCC on my fluxbox desktop ! Which ones ? I don't see. Take the exemple of Drakxres who works better and have many more fonctionnalities than kxconfig. To each his own, I guess. I think kxconfig is just fine, and I don't see any major missing functionality in it. Because Xdrakres have a better ease of use, use Mdk hardware detection libraries / have a better Mdk stuff integration. And I just saw that kxconfig have a bug - he detect my keyboard with US layout. I'm in french layout (I agree, it's not related). Oh, while we're on the topic, I'll state my opinion that linuxconf was the biggest piece of crap I have ever tried to use to configure a system, and I Hmm, I take it by your lack of argument here that you're not a linuxconf fan either? :) MCC is greet for others environment than Gnome KDE. If Mdk team is agree, tests can be done (it's not long/hard to integrate Mdk tools in KDE control center. For Gnome control center, I don't know, I hope it's the same).

[Cooker] [not urgent] - controls centers reflexion
KDE control center have more and more fonctionnalities each days (X configuration with kxconfig, lilo configuration, camera configuration, keyboard layout, power control, hardware infos, network config,...). A day, we'll have 2 control centers in KDE environment, not 100% interoperables/compatibles (they will not configure thinks as same). kxconfig doesn't configure display as drakXres for exemple. It's a little bad for usability to have 2 controls center (confusions,...) What can be do (now or in future) : - lets things as this, it works mostly, it's not top for usability but it's not bad / 2 or more control centers, that's greet, the user will choose he's prefered one in his prefered environment. - delete tools as kxconfig in KDEcontrolcenter- KDE control center configure only KDE things. MCC control center will configure all others things. - modify tools for entire compatibility/interoperability (if they don't)- good luck ;). - replace tools as kxconfig, lilo config in kde control center by Mdk's one - Mdk's tools integration in KDE control center. MCC'll be keept (if user is in another environment or if he want to use it because he prefer it)- the configuration center icon in launch bar launch KDE control center in kde (kdecontrol center will be the default control center in kde), MCC in another desktop environment. It's my prefered issue (I like MCC but it could be better for usability- all configuration in the same control center in KDE, the top for usability and it's always the same tools who are used in each environments (Mdk's ones)). Thanks to have read all ;) Florent

They are TV cards in user view. all i want to know is if they support chanell selection ? no scantv with actual driver (see : http://www.emuit.com/webcam.html for more info). My only concern is that all TV cards will be handle by drakxtv that : - configure it if it need to be configured (bttv cards for exemple) - display a messagebox that the card is autoconfigured (usbvision cards for exemple) - display a messagebox that the card isn't supported yet / the driver is in alpha step (and display the link of project web page for info) / have a proprietary driver (and display the link of driver web page for info) Sorry if it wasn't clear before ;) from what you wrote, i understand these usb devices are not tv tuners but just are more similar to webcam than to tv tuners. It's not easy. These cards have a TV tuner (Philips SAA711x for info), the windows driver scan it but the linux one is in progress. drakxtv point was to configure bttv cards since when i arrived at mandrakesoft, tv cards where hard to configure at : - kernel side : bttv didn't autoconfigure most tv cards at that time - user side : xawtv had no wizard to write a configuration file (even no scantv at that time) yes, you do greet works, I don't says the opposite ! obviously, there's no problems on kernel side with usb devices. what is left is user space applications. if these cards are not tv tuners, aka they don't support v4l ioctl to select frequencies, but only enable apps to grab images, there's nothing to do. Just inform the user that he's TV card is handled. from what you wrote, it seems they don't support these ioctl. so why do you want a wrapper to display bogus messages box (we've nothing to configure but i just want to say you 'nice day') instead of just running xawtv, which is just what we currently do. i can accept your changes regarding harddrake::date *IF* these usb pets don't have the right class (can you provide me the info displayed by harddrake?) It wasn't my intention. Sorry if you have consider this thread as spam, I'll try to be more carefull in future. obviously, if your usb devices are just webcams that've nothing to configure or that need to be configuring, then your mails sayging drakxtv is buggy are just plain lies. Sorry/Désolé si tu l'as mal pris Don't formalize on it. a free software world doesn't meen free insults regarding quality of softwares. I don't want to insult somebody and I think didn't insulted one. I develop GPL softwares too. And I repeat your software is quality (I only use Mdk at home). That's normal that software have bugs. I don't blame you, I only focuses on little problems, don't formalize please. if they're just webcam, then there's no point in offering to configure them in drakxtv since we cannot do anything. webcam're managed through devfsd/hotplug/dynamic and appears automatically on desktop. kwintv is broken). They are TV cards in user view. if they're just webcam, then there's no point in offering to configure them in drakxtv since we cannot do anything. webcam're managed through devfsd/hotplug/dynamic and appears automatically on desktop. kwintv is broken).

So, i reformule my question : - Is an entire cooker system (libraries devel packages) is needed to use rpm-rebuilder ? -In use rpm-rebuilder ask me for password (I use it with a simple user account). Why ? Thanks for answers, it's a long process ! Florent Maybe you need to setup sudo to enable use of urpmi as normal user... Take a look to the script. Ok, thx. I have asked Mdk's team for entire procedure. Build Mdk for i686 is (very) long and I don't have time to find solutions ach each step if a procedure exists and it exists - Mdk team use it for the main distro. So I re-ask : Can I have the entire procedure to build the distro for i686 from Mdk team please ? Thanks, Florent And ? I have asked for the procedure a week ago with no response. Re: [Cooker] is there a problem with glibc 2.3.1 ?

Is there a reason (time, stability) ? What is your reason for asking for it so often ? You really need it ? yes, for performance improvments. It's a upgrade of a major Linux library. RedHat have it and C applications, as KDE, are faster, it's a known thing. Florent -- EXCEPTIONNEL! Tiscali lance les forfaits Internet Illimités, à partir de 15,95EUR / mois. To answer the question in the title, yes there are problems with glibc 2.3.1. It can break a lot of stuff already built against previous versions. What can it break ? Florent -- EXCEPTIONNEL! [Cooker] mandrake tools bugs / features request / suggestions
Hello, I have noted some points in Mandrake tools : === Drakconf : Suggestions : - automatic installation should be in system section (not starting related). I think that all starting/démarrage section's icons should be moved to system section. === Drakxtv : feature request : - Drakxtv doesn't handle USB TV cards. === Drakconnect : bugs : - drakconnect notice that I have an internal winmodem (I haven't one, see my lspcidrake output bellow). - My Alcatel Speedtouch USB is detected, the ADSL option is enabled (nice) but in ADSL choice, it's pppoe that is enabled by default (must be Alcatel Speedtouch USB - detected). - a gateway and DNS server adresses are required (obligatory) at network card configuration. Why is it obligatory ? question / feature request : - If I have an internet connection with a non-listed modem, is it handled by drakconnect (who seem to set the default route) ? Can a choice Other, manually configured at ppp0 be added in ADSL configuration ? - what are the news about ECI ADSL modems status ? === rpmdrake : bugs : - the add source window have a very little design problem : the title must be Ajout d'une source/Add a source (actually : Editer une source/Edit a source) who is writed in the window - it'll can be deleted (- 1 line in the gui). Not very important ;) features request : - please add a contribs option as the updates source (security updates) model (list). Contribs is a big source of software but isn't proposed to the user :( - more verbose if an urpmi source cannot be added - cannot connect to server or sythesis.hdlist.cz/hdlist.cz isn't at specified location. === Harddrake : - I have already posted some bugs/notes about it (displays all cpu flags, keyboard main memory infos). === Thanks to take a look to these notes, Florent
